Trail Magic #1

California Sunshine

Rate this book
Two thousand six hundred and sixty four miles.

The Pacific Crest Trail is a big endeavor. But after the way my year started, it might be just what I need. So I’ll take five months alone on a trail. Five months to clear my head and figure out my life. It’ll be good for me.

At least, that’s what I keep telling myself.

That is, until I meet Nova on the morning I start my trip. He’s sunshine and smiles and everything I shouldn’t want to get involved with right now. But he’s asked me to join him and his friends as they also hike the trail. And I can’t seem to say no to that idea.

Bats is the strong, tall, silent type. Yet there’s a depth behind that stoic façade I wouldn’t mind getting to know better. Because every time he looks at me, he makes me feel like I’m the key to their entire trip.

Grinder is the kind of guy I’d like to spend the next five months avoiding. He’s all growls and threats, and clearly doesn’t want me with them. And he’s been quick to tell me just that at every chance. So why do I feel pulled towards him?

It's only five months with three hot guys on the trip of a lifetime.

What could go wrong?

------

California Sunshine is a slow burning contemporary reverse harem romance set along the Pacific Crest Trail. Determined to put her ex behind her, "Belle" joins "Nova", "Bats", and "Grinder" as they set out on the five-month trek from the Mexican border to British Columbia. It’s full of laughs, coffee, cheeseburgers, and chances for a young woman to figure out who she is and what she wants.

Chris enjoys good food, steamy books, and long walks in the forest with his wife. Or the beach. Or parks. Okay, he enjoys long walks just about everywhere, and has since he was a kid. The world around us is simply incredible, and there’s so much to see beyond what you can see outside the car window.

He also loves telling stories. When his two cats aren’t trying to add to his manuscript, that is. A lifetime player of tabletop and role-playing games, he’s always been the one to step forward to run the game, weaving a story for his friends to enjoy. Writing has been something he’s always considered. It just took finding the right story to get him started.

Like a good trail, he doesn’t know where this journey will take him, but he’s going to enjoy the trip.

I was lucky to win an ARC for this book! It is a contemporary, med burn, slow build RH with characters in their early twenties. It is a very unique story set on the trail across the USA all the way to Canada. The story is about self growth, about finding your path when you were forced to reconsider where you are going. The FMC is a slightly nerdy girl, coming from a bad break up. She meets the guys early on and decides to travel with them. Their is attention to detail besides the main plotlines without diving into extensive and long-winded descriptions. It's littered with tidbits about nature and history, but in easy dosages with enough time devoted to the emerging connections between the main characters. Their backsstories remain somewhat superficial but that can be explained by the 'leave life behind at the trail' mindset. Otherwise a great and light story. Looking very forward to the next book as then the more complex relationships will need to be sorted ;)

There is no bully, no school setting, no mafia, not dark, no TW. It's multi POV.

Dnf @ 18%/ 5 chapters

Could I keep reading? Probably, but I’m not into it. It’s a lot of taking photos and pissing off Grinder, but I’m not really picking up a story? I know that doesn’t make sense…
I’m also not a huge fan of the characters. I feel bad for Grinder who wants to hike a certain way and his friends are instead obsessed with a random girl and are going slower, BUT he is also an asshole. I wish they could have talked out a compromise. Although we don’t even get a scene showing Belle officially joining the hiking group. How did Grinder agree to it? I really don’t think he did.
Soooo eh idk like I said, I could have kept reading, but I’m worried I’ll just dislike it even more.

Color me surprised

I really didn't think the reviews for this book where being honest. After all how good can a romance hiking book be? It was great and I am not ready to wait for the next one. Plus I had no idea it was written by a man until I got to the end where it talks about the author. So color me pleasantly surprised

Actual rating of 4.5

After a terrible star to the year, Belle is taking a chance and following a dream. She's going to hike 2,664 miles along the PCT and give herself the time and space she needs to clear her head and figure out what she wants from life. Until on first morning at the start of the trail, she meets Nova; good looking, kind, smiley sunshine, Nova, who asks her to join him and his two friends - Bats and Grinder - on the trail. She knows that she shouldn't, but how can she say no? Bats is the strong silent type, while Grinder is like an angry storm cloud that Belle would rather avoid than hike a five month long trail with, but maybe some company along the way won't be such a bad thing after all...after all, it's only five months, hiking alone with three hot guys...what could go wrong?

Can I just say, this book really surprised me. I knew I was going to enjoy it, it just gave me that vibe, but I didn't realise how much I was going to enjoy it! This was an absolute page turner for me, and I can't wait to continue with the series!

This story is told mostly from Belle's point of view, with a smattering of chapters thrown in from the guys points of view throughout. I felt that this was a very character driven story, which I love, and it did not disappoint. The setting for the story is the Pacific Crest Trail which can be done in sections or straight through, our story follows those who are planning a straight through hike, all the way to Canada. We first meet Belle when she's a complete mess after she's left her boyfriend, she throws herself into planning for the hike of a lifetime, even though she was meant to be going with said boyfriend, she's determined to still do it, and on her own. What I loved is that there's not this huge section where she's preparing every little thing, instead we get a brief snippet then before we know it, she's at the beginning of the trail. I loved this because the story didn't get weighed down with all the minute details, yet still gave enough that we had the full picture. It stuck with the important things and I felt that this really worked for the story.

I absolutely adored the characters. I really loved Belle's character from the moment we meet her. She's heartbroken, but she's determined and I felt that she was such a strong character who was just trying her best to work through a crappy hand she'd been dealt and move on. She is a very real character and I felt like I was walking beside her along the trail. She's someone I'd want to be friends with, honestly. I love that she's a science nerd. I loved the characters of the guys as well. They had such distinct personalities and voices and I loved how different they all were to each other. Nova gave me mad Labrador vibes with his sunshine personality and his smiles, while Bats was the silent type, yet became sweet and endearing in a heart beat. Grinder took me a little bit more to warm up to, but it's because he was putting up this prickly exterior which I felt really worked for the story. I loved that there was more to this than meets the eye when it came to each character and their reason for taking on this hike. The relationships between all of the characters were so well written and felt really organic, which I loved. There was no instalove here, it was four people getting to know each other in such an intimate setting, was there initial attraction? Of course, but once again, it felt so real and I am here for it! I loved how the relationships developed over the story naturally, and I especially love the character growth, especially that of Grinder. I just really loved these characters.

The setting for the story was so wonderfully described without getting bogged down in unnecessary details, it felt like I was walking the trail right along side Belle and Co. There's a particularly touching scene that is my favourite so far that involves the guys and some rocks (IYKNK). The trek is not finished in this opening instalment, and I'm really glad about it. I love that it looks like we'll get to enjoy the story told against the backdrop of the trail for a good chunk of it. I'm so excited for the next instalment in this series. I think one thing that really drew me to this book was because the setting reminded me of another story I read a couple of years ago, it's called Petra's Ghost by C.S. O'Cinneide, don't get me wrong, the stories are completely different, but that story is also told against the back drop of a hiking trail - The Camino de Santiago - and I feel like this was a big part of what piqued my interest for this story. I really enjoyed the hiking setting and this book did not disappoint.

All in all, this is a fantastic story of four people coming together over their need to heal and work out what they really want out of life, while they grow into someone new. There is a budding romance told against the stunning backdrop of the PCT, and characters that really step right off the page. I highly recommend this book and I cannot wait to continue the series (I'm really hoping the guys catch up with Bryce, that would be a cherry on top of an amazing story).

Four people, all in need to put real life behind themselves for a while, together on a life-altering hike.

Lizzy, nickname Belle, was supposed to hike the Pacific Crest Trail with her boyfriend. All her plans involved a five month long couples trip, right up until the moment she catches him in the act with another woman. Refusing to back down from a hike she had been looking forward to for a very long time, Belle decides to go on this hike alone and discover het true self, the person she is and wants to be. Faith seems to have a different plan though, as she meets Nova, Bats and Grinder; three friends who invite her to come along on their hike (at least... Nova invites her).

This RH debut from Chris Mor was a true delight and a very pleasant surprise. Whenever I read a contemporary story it needs to have that little extra to make it into a five star read and this book absolutely had that for me. I loved how recognizable these characters are; these are regular young people, all in their early twenties, dealing with becoming adults, losing a dream and finding their new path in life. The story is beautifully balanced, it never felt too emotional and I often had a big smile on my face while reading. This entire story felt so pure and real it was like watching real people hiking and finding love along the way.

I absolutely recommend everyone to give this book a chance; I'm really looking forward to the next part.

Read this book!

Generally, I don't recommend book 1 in a series until I read the other books. However, the other books aren't relased yet. (Insert sad face). That being said...

I love the characters! That's my number one issue when reading a book. I've got to like the main and supporting characters.

Next, the storyline and setting. Wow! Just wow. It's unique and I can't wait to see where the author takes the series.

Last, this book is definitely a HFN. No cliffhanger. It ends with a high note but leaves you with wanting more.

I read this book through KU. I'll buy the book once the others are released and if they are just as good as this one, and if the series ends on a high note as book one did.

Well done by this brand new author!

I loved it! I thought it was a refreshing story. A story of 4 different people running or searching for something. We get to see Belle grow and find her own strengths. We have angst and a bit of steam. I would consider this a slow burn, but I felt it fit the storyline perfectly. The relationships between Belle and the guys felt genuine and not rushed. I love that we got multiple POVs. It gives us a good insight on how the guys are thinking or feeling. I think this was a great start to a new series! I can't wait for book 2!

This was a great debut. I've never read anything with hiking as the setting, and all the different terms and places mentioned were fun to learn about. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. There is some angry tension between Belle and Grinder for a good chunk of the book, but it adds to the plot. Nova and Belle hit it off right away, with lots of seggsy buildup in between. Bats is adorable. His go with the flow attitude makes him my favorite, but I also love how he knows how to put his foot down when he feels strongly about something. I'll be happy to read the next book when it is released, as this is definitely something new and fresh to read about!

4.5 stars, for sure

This was a great start to a series. Highly recommend!

I just starting hiking last year. Red Rock in Vegas is extraordinary. And while I don't think I could hike the PCT, I loved hearing about the sights and scenery. Mor was able to showcase what the group was seeing/experiencing without feeling like I was getting bogged down in it.

Wow! This book was so well written it was like I was out on the trail with them going through the day to day adventures. I loved the daily chapters that immersed you in the story and how they all slowly went from strangers to acquaintances to friends. I loved the trail names and distance they put between themselves and their trail persona but how outside factors keep creeping to to make them all start to think about life outside the trail. I love that its a slow burn because the plot is just so good as you cheer for them all to figure out the future. Bring on the next trail section ASAP!

This book was quite different to the ones I usually read, I had seen comments about it on facebook and felt intrigued by the plot. I was delighted I did decide to try this book as I really enjoyed it. The book not only takes us through the rites of passage adventures of Belle, Nova, Grinder and Bats. There is great attention to detail in the book and descriptions of the Pacific Crest trail which were really interesting and enhanced the story rather than detracted from it. Chris Mor certainly has a skill with words that felt you were sucked in with the journey of Belle and her hiking buddies. I look forward to the next book in the series to follow the adventure further. I recommend this book highly

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

This book caught my eye because of the thru hiking theme. I was interested in learning more about trail hiking and reading a romance at the same time. Unfortunately I felt like I went in with the wrong expectations. This book is about the romance first and the trail hiking is mostly the setting and context.

I really wanted to learn more about the trail hiking while enjoying a good story, but unfortunately this book didn't deal as much with the actual hiking as I would've liked. The trail hiking is an important part of the story, but not in the way I had expected. The trail hiking mostly shapes the journey and where they are going, but the scenes with most detail are the character interactions. The hiking scenes are often summarized and I felt that the hiking was more the backdrop and setting. I wanted to really feel like I was on the trail and being able to visualize everything. I did feel the author did his research well, there are lots of mentions of specific places they camp and where they go to get their resupply boxes and such. I just would've liked more descriptions of the actual hiking and experiencing more what it's like to do such a big hike.

The second issue I had with this book is that I had expected the character journeys to be a bit deeper/ more of the focus. With the premise of how Elizabeth needs this trail to figure out her life and how someone she trusted had betrayed her I had expected more focus on her mental journey and her figuring things out. This is definitely part of the book, but not as much as I had expected. The book actually feels quite light and fun. There are scenes that dive deeper and especially later on in the book we get to learn why the three guys are on the trail and see Elizabeth share her story, but I had expected this to be more the focus.

The third thing that bothered me was Grinder, the grumpy guy of the three. He was being rude to Elizabeth for a big part of the book. It's clear that this is more his issue than Elizabeth's issue, but it bothered me and I didn't like how grumpy and rude he was all the time. When we find out his story it makes a bit more sense, but even then I felt like he was ruining the trail for the others with his constant pressure to walk more and his grumpy and rude attitude. This is also a bit of a personal pet peeve of mine with how he kept trying to rush everyone and get them to hurry up, it just didn't sit well with me.

While this book didn't quite hit the mark for me, there were still plenty of things I did enjoy. Like I mentioned before the book had a lighthearted vibe which was fun. I also liked how the three guys all have a very different personality. Nova is the sunshine guy with how happy and optimistic he is, Bats is the more strong and quiet type, while Grinder is the grumpy one. Their personalities also go a lot deeper than that and I liked learning more about them. They have their own personality from the start, but learning more about them as the story progressed deepened their personalities and made them feel more real. I liked how Elizabeth was an interesting main character and also has multiple facets to her personality and I liked the way she forms a different bond with each of the guys.

While I would've liked to see more of the hiking, I liked the trail hiking as setting for this book. I thought it felt different from a lot of contemporary romances as they're constantly on the move, staying in different places and so far away from home. It made for an interesting set up and I liked the bits I learned about trail hiking.

The romance is a medium/ slow burn and I liked how Elizabeth got to know the guys before things heat up. In this book she only gets romantically involved with one guy, but the basis for a potential romance is build with the others. I am curious to see how this turns into a reverse harem. I liked how Elizabeth and the guy she gets romantically involved with spend time getting to know each other before things heat up. I also thought it was realistic how Elizabeth needed some time before she was ready for that. The actual steam felt a bit too much and over the top and I skimmed those scenes, but that's mostly my personal preference. Besides Elizabeth's point of view there are also some chapters from the guys points of views now and them, which helps to get a better idea of them and how they see things. I thought it worked well here and added to the story.

To summarize: California Sunshine is a lighthearted reverse harem romance story set against the backdrop of trail hiking. I went in with not quite the right expectations and was a bit disappointed there wasn't more about the actual hiking, the scenery and hiking didn't really come alive to me and made it hard to visualize things. I also had expected there to be more focus on the characters journeys and figuring out what they want from life, while this is definitely in the book, it's not as big part as I had expected. The three guys all have their own personalities and I thought the author really made sure they felt different and also that there was more to them than we see at first. I didn't find Nova as interesting and I didn't like how grumpy and rude Grinder was for a big part of the book. I thought Bats was the most interesting one of the three, but the other guys do get more interesting as the story progresses and we learn more about them. I liked how we get a few chapters from the guys perspectives too. Elizabeth was an interesting main character and I liked her determination to complete this hike, she also felt real with how she still struggled with something that happens to her before she goes in a hike. I appreciated how the romance is a bit of a medium/ slow burn where she gets to know the guys first before things heat up.

Take a hike!

California Sunshine is a slow-burn contemporary RH with a bit of trail magic mixed in.
Chris Mor’s @chrismorauthor debut novel is fun and refreshingly full of laughs and all the feels. With the vivid detail, you feel like you are on the trail along with Belle, Nova, Bats, and Grinder. Fun side note…check out the Conqueror Virtual Challenge of the Pacific Crest Trail to hike along with them.

California Sunshine will have you wanting to pack your things and head out on the PCT to experience some trail magic of your own. Who knows, maybe you will find a great group of guys to hike with. ;) Why choose?

I found this book as I was looking to meet the following very specific challenge criteria
A 2 word title
No P in the title
A place in the title
Has the words cabin, sport and hammock in the text
The cover had to have somewhere you could sleep, something made of wood and something you could be allergic to on it.

This book was the only one I found out of hundreds I had searched by borrowing them on KU to search for the words in text. The previous weeks I didn’t really enjoy the books I found for the challenge but this one I actually really enjoyed. I was slightly annoyed that it continues into the next book but there was no shocking cliffhanger so it made it slightly better.

I thought I was going to be reading about someone going on a hiking trail but this is a romance found on the trail after a breakup and about a group of friends about to embark on the adult world of work and spending the time before that doing something they love.

First time author Chris Mor sends us on a hiking adventure with Belle (Lizzy) off on her own after a break up. She connects with a group of long time friends at the start of the trail journey. The story is not only a physical trek, but a emotional self-discovery journey for each of them individually and together. I love how they are growing. I enjoyed this book because I actually learned a bunch about the PCT trail and could just imagine the scenery and journey. The characters felt real. I’m invested in this crew. It’s a slow burn, so she’s technically only physically involved with one of the guys by the end of the book, its obvious that the other 2 aren’t far behind. Even though its slow burn, there are some steamy parts, let me tell you! This book was a nice breather between other angsty dark bully book. I can’t wait to see what else lies ahead for this crew! If you’re a fan of Willow Hadley or Addison Arrowdell’s book Road Trip, this has a similar feel.

I don't even know where to begin with this review! This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was hooked from the beginning of the book and couldn't put it down.

It's about 4 people trying to find a little peace in their lives, along with finding themselves before getting thrown into adulthood. This book was very well written and made me feel like I was part of the journey. It made me want to go travel miles and miles to find the nearest hiking trail.

This is a slow burn RH where they start off as strangers and slowly become friends. Normally I am not a huge fan of slow burn RH's but the plot of the book was so good I couldn't help but flip to the next page to find out what was going to happen.

I would/have recommended everyone to read this book or any book Chris Mor publishes in the future. I can't wait for the next part of this story!

Breath of fresh air!

This book is truly one of a kind and absolute magic! The FMC Belle is sweet and relatable. The guys are all different, but mesh so well together that their friendship makes sense and there is a wonderful balance. When Belle joins them, you can just feel the chemistry leap off the page as she discovers not only herself, but friendship and romance. You truly feel that you are making this journey with her. Another fantastic aspect of this book is the trail itself! I felt as if I was actually there and would swear I could feel a breeze as I read! The description of the trail was that vivid! Chris Mor is a wonderful new author who really has a way with words and leaves you wanting more!

I have been lucky to be one of the few selected to read this fabulous debut book as Chris was writing it. Chris was put here on earth to weave a story. The author has a passion for hiking and the beauty of the pct and we see it in this book. Belle, Nova, Grinder, and Bats come alive on the pages. It is as if you are watching a movie or you are actually on the pct with this group of young hikers.

Don't let the cover fool you. There is plenty of steamy scenes throughout the trail. :).

Please note: this is book one of a series. This series is a reverse Harem series however book one is mf.

I liked it!

I really enjoyed the journey so far. I’m not a hiker but I enjoyed reading about it. The characters are interesting. Each guy is unique and memorable. Belle is brave and smart and strong enough to keep up with the guys. I really liked that she is her own person. I don’t know about in their real world, but on the trail they all seem to treat each other as equals. I am concerned about how this will evolve into RH. The foundation is there though. Over all a great start to a series. I definitely want to see what happens next.

Beautiful

Slow burn RH.
This book took me by surprise. Beautiful written with great character development that makes you fall in love with each and everyone (except Bryce). I loved the easiness of which the friendships grow and the simplicity of it all when no big drama is happening with every turn of the page. I cannot wait to read more and look forward to whats to come throughout this series. Also I am now searching up all I can about the PCT

Very original

I really enjoyed this book. I can honestly say I have never read a RH book where the main characters were hikers. That was a very original plot idea. Especially, having a highly educated geek girl who hikes as the FMC. I'm a science geek so really loved having a character I could relate to. I can appreciate the slow burn aspect as well. I hope their relationships develops more in the next book. Along with the characters encountering some specific danger/challenges that will require them to rely on each other to help solve. All in all it was a very enjoyable read.

I LOVED this book. It follows "Belle" as she sets out on a journey with three strangers she meets at the beginning of the trail. Chris Mor did an amazing job making the characters relatable and providing enough details to make the reader feel as though they are right there with the group. This book is a slow burn with lots of laughs along the way. I can't wait for book two so we can see how all of these relationships unfold!

New author for me. A 4++ stars book. A slow burn RH that takes place while hiking the Pacific trail that goes to Canada. Well written, brings back memories of places I hiked as a teen. I honestly like the characters and storyline. Will eagerly be awaiting the next book.

Wild Meets Love

I got recommended this book from a group and I am so glad I read it. The story captured me from the first page! It’s a slow-burn, but seeing the relationship form along the trail is magical. I’m anxiously awaiting the next leg of the journey, to see how Bella and The Boys work their way on their journey! Awesome debut novel sir!

If you want something light and fun, this is it. It's beautifully written, beautifully paced, and I'm in love with every character in this book. This book was so much fun. The writing was great and made me feel as if I was on the walk with the group. I loved following along with Bella and the Guys- Nova, Batts and Grinder on the first part of their adventure. There were some very funny parts in this book mostly involving a coffee bet and a glitter bomb. Definitely made me laugh out loud. There was also some Drama in the books and some Sexy times as well. I am looking forward to the next book in this series!!

I loved this book. The writing was great, the story was amazing and the characters were very likeable! The only reason it didn’t get 5 stars from me, is because I’m not sure how the author is going to progress the relationship (s) ? It’s very slow. Hopefully, the next book will knock my socks off!
