As we pick up the story from the last book, the crew has gotten the Heart of Encelasus enclosed in the key...but before that happened, a bolt of lightning from the Heart hit Fai Chang, Peter's father, putting him into a state of unconsciousness that hasn't varied. Just before the motley crew escaped Enceledus, one of the Chinese crewmembers passed on the aliens' hypersensitivity to sonic weaponry, allowing the ships still trying to escape it to cobble together a sonic cannon that disabled the alien ship. Now, there is a new US Space Corps ship and a Chinese ship that has been taken over by its prisoners - the Indian cell crew and a few Yanks. They've had some casualties but managed to take over the ship, and huddling on the bridge were the civilian Chinese engineers who ended up helping them. In charge of this group is Hellcat. In charge of the new USSC arrival is a familiar figure from a previous book, now the captain of her ship, Capt. Sanz. As usual, the enlisted ranks with experience know a lot more than the officers might wish they knew, and among them, Hellcat is the one who knows far more than any officer thinks they should.
Meanwhile, the escapees from Enceledus, which is now a dust cloud, are heading for Titan, where the Chinese have an abandoned space station - or so they hope.
The space ship that has attacked belongs to a race called the Greater Geaa, multicolored aliens with a major superiority complex. There were 3 worlds of the Lesser Geaa, of whom Muul and Goii, her captain, are representatives. They were created to serve the Greater Geaa and are indoctrinated since birth that their lives can have no higher meaning or purpose. Yet Muul has always questioned this, esp. when her world full of Lesser Geaa was simply destroyed - no evacuation, nothing natural caused it. It was the will of the Broodmother of the Greater Geaa and so it happened. But the desire for independence v. slavery seems to have been implanted on the many worlds the Plantarians sowed, from Earth onwards.
And it is the Plantarians Ming's motley group eventually meets, after they meet the Zhuque, a Chinese-created artificial yet living lifeform. They're rather a variant on the pterodactyl, from what I can tease out pf the description. One of the first thing Ming's group finds are actually the eggs in a lab left turned on. Some of the babies are dead, but those that are alive, the group sees reunited with the older birds.
The group brings the Plantarians up to speed. The new aliens (to the crew, anyway) are concerned with the Greater Geaa's handling of some things. As a planet, they have not only devoped mass egomania, but power hunger that is expressed by conquest or elimination. They realize that Fai's condition, unlike Vasco's arm, is going to take more than a Star-Trek style medical tricorder to fix - they'll have to take him to the Ygge, which they do. Finally, he wakens up, having learned he may still look outwardly like one, but he is no longer human. He has a job to do that only he can manage. Peter's first few moments with his dad are a disappointment to the young man, who has done all he can to keep his father safe and feels like he has gotten the brush-off. Meanwhile, the 2 ships above Titan are being fixed and equipped in case of another alien attack.
Down on Earth, Avery Mills, discoverer of an odd artifact deep in the Marianas Trench, has been contacted by someone who advises him he needs to get to safety. He is being watched by a small man who seems symbiotically attached to his phone. They're approached by the people who are really lookng for Avery. The man tags along; it turns out he is the press secretary of the US. Meanwhile, they fly off in a private plane that has a unique defense system reminiscent of an anime series. They end up in a huge family reunion that includes VIPs from half the globe at least. This is where you learn more about the item Avery discovered. The onus put on their generation. The price of failure. The nature of the fight over millennia.
Meanwhile, the power and conquest hungry Greater Geaa has decided to attack the varied ships of Earth that have gathered looking for the ultimate weapon. Some of those on the Chinese and American ships remember the disintegration of the Russian ship. They got lucky in their ability to defeat what was a Lesser Geaa ship. Muul advises getting the captains or their reps from the various ships all there so she can tell them what they're really facing. All of them evacuate Titan, which is the first place their disintegration weapon - which is actually more complex than it sounds - is aimed, just as the Photosynthian ship lands. Peter and Lowell dig it out of the dust. Fai does as the Ygge has told him to do. Peter and Lowell and the Photosynthians hold off the Broodmother, her lackey, and her pilot so the Greater Geaa can't get the key before Fai completes whatever task the Ygge has given him, with Peter's help. There is a united battle of Earth against the Greater Geaa. At one point, Titan has 3 unusual visitors with a request for the Photosynthians. One of Lowell's friends has a weird plan for retiring...if he gets that far.
Who wins this melee space battke? What happens when the Americans follow Sargon's descendants into the sea? And why is it that they manage to kill off one of my 2 absolute favorite characters? Wasn't there someone else that could have been picked off? I really liked those 2 and now, one has died in battle.
While things basically seem to resolve themselves in a lot of ways, for good or ill, there is a 4th book to be released, "Awakened (Saturn's Legacy Book 4)," available for preorder apparently, though I think it will be a while before it shows up in our libraries.

It was always something, wasn’t it? Sometimes it felt like God, or these stupid plant aliens, or whoever was ultimately in charge of the universe had it in for him.

Just as with the transition from book 1 to 2, we start off immediately from the last scenes of "Cascade", making "Saturn's Legacy" much more of an extended tome overall than many of the truly separate-able trilogies you see on similar bookshelves! But no worries, things immediately ratchet up even more than before and everything rapidly evolves into what can only be considered pure wack-a-doodle territory. And yes, again, we are treated to a wide variety of locations and even some new personalities in this book which I found to be really positive across the board!

It is a strange thing… to meet your gods and discover that they do not approve of the world you have built.

James seems to have enjoyed himself quite a bit here, almost seeming to mix such classics as "Close Encounters" with "Mars Attacks!" (Slim Whitman fans rejoice!) and even a dash of the original "Stargate" along the way. If you're so inclined, you may even argue there's some "Little Shop of Horrors" thrown in for good measure! And that's not even mentioning the entire "Jack Reacher", "Iron Man" or "Mission Impossible" elements (or maybe even one of those mysterious Tom Hanks movies I never saw) that crop up! Again, though, I can only underline that it all gets wild and then some!

…here he was, riding a janky pterodactyl into battle against an alien superpower.

This time the mix of characters, species and alliances is equally just plain out there! Despite their unfortunate name, the Photosynthians wind up being a very unique and clever part of the lore of this Universe. And naturally, the weirdness that the various humans bring to the show - not to mention even the man-made lifeforms (or remade lifeforms?) - continues to offer some interesting conflict and even cooperation along the way. As for the Greys - or I guess we have to refer to them now as the Gêaan - well, the mix of castes and motivations and even just plain good vs. evil that comes from that part of things is very cool in its own way, too!

Lowell closed eyes and took a steadying breath. Of course all aliens were nerds. Why hadn’t he assumed that from the beginning?

I've said it before and certainly there is nothing in this episode to change my opinion, but James is certainly a more-than-capable author. The prose, vocabulary and editing are all top-notch and I definitely want to check out more of his titles. And the pacing in this final (?) installment is just as smooth as pushing a hot knife through warm butter (hint: a very smooth thing indeed). In fact, the only - not complaint, no - but uncertainty I really had in overall was I felt like the author could never really decide whether he wanted this to be more funny vs. more serious or harder in terms of action, even brutal in many ways when you look at the, sorry, The Truth of all things considered!

Interspecies collusion is heartwarming…

I mean, there were some
(a) really brutal scenes that had a teeny tiny bit of levity in them (akin to the adventures from writers like Nicholas Sansbury Smith, Anthony Melichiorri and RC. Bruno);
(b) other scenes with almost no levity but really complex situations with a fascinating, almost "classic scifi" flow ("Old Man's War" from John Scalzi springs to mind);
(c) and even some scenes that were almost silly in contrast where the author didn't hold back in terms of humor. Which isn't bad at all because in many ways it's what drove forward these parts anyway (to this I would implore you to please check out the wildly under-rated "Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse" series by Jim C. Hines that concludes later this year and is easily one of the best all-around series I've read in this regard EVER!).

Three enemy factions and two civilians walk into a spacecraft…there was a punchline in there somewhere…

But where does the flow James' "Saturn's Legacy" fit with all that in mind? I would tend to say somewhere between (a) and (b) … but then again maybe I just need to stop trying to force it into a definition? It's just that I felt sometimes it - the humor I mean - should have been more "defined" (ie HEY THIS PART IS FUNNY!). But then again, although arguably perhaps not consistent, it still worked. Maybe it just missed the mark a little on occasion … or more likely, I just didn't catch it like I should have. I don't know, maybe I'm just droning on here … and no, that's not a pun about the Tiān Zhuānjiā weapons. Dang it, now I'm doing it, too (HEY, THAT PART WAS FUNNY!).

Choosing sides among the offspring of our various worlds is a complex moral conundrum…

ANYWAY… truth be told, this a minor nit to pick at best! Bottom-line is I enjoyed this book - and the entire series - thoroughly. And this thrilling, often even gut-wrenchingly emotional ending was just what the sentient, life-giving houseplant ordered! In terms of rating the series, well, I found to be greater than the sum of its parts, which is a great sign for a multi-book offer! I don't regret for a moment picking it out a few weeks back at all! Definitely on my "I would recommend!" list for sure!

Detective Soldier Ancient Aliens comes to a close.... or does it (more on that later in the review)

I was reaching a lull in my back catalog when I discovered this series and Joshua James himself. It was a Facebook targeted ad; it worked apparently. I have rated all three of these books at 3 stars indicating that I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. Much like book 2 this one picks up right where we left our heroes; on the way to Titan (another great choice for a Sollan set sci-fi book by the way). With no where left to go and not sure what to do with the powered up key to Enceledus we get thrown right back into the action as our heroes bumble toward their next quest marker. This time pursued by the High Council of the Greater Geaan species and meeting with the progenitors of all life in the universe, the Photosynthians. Honestly it would be hard for me to delineate the major differences between these three novels. Each of them have startingly similar story beats. This one cuts to the chase much quicker and does set up some interesting mythology to further what we have learned already.

I will give credit where it is due I thought the Photosynthians were very interesting. The Geaan species felt like something familiar but the Photosynthians felt like something new entirely. They felt very fleshed out and by the end I felt the same way as Lowell seeing them first as enemies, then as benevolent gods, and finally as just another species trying their best. Getting to visit their home plant and having Fai Chang speak with their elder was all very interesting and was by far the best part of this last stretch of the story.

Taking that credit back we find the polar opposite in the Avery Mills plot line. I still do not fully know why they needed to dedicate so much of the runtime to his story as he is reunited with his distant cousins and fellow descendants of Sargon of Aakkad. It felt like a big reveal at the end of book 2 that there was a stellar key that could be used against Earth and forces moving to get it seemed to be what this part of the story was building toward. Instead that story went..... nowhere? Avery gets the lowdown on the Earth key and the Photosynthians but this is all information we already had. There SEEMED to be forces moving against Avery's crew but the conclusion of this was both hilarious and confusing. I am pretty sure if you removed all of Avery's chapters you most likely would not have really missed anything and that is not good.

The battle on Titan was a good one and I will say the loss of Tuhin was actually a surprising emotional gut punch. The rebirth of Titan in the chamber was also an interesting swerve but Fai Chang's part in the 2 books he appeared in is kind of puzzling seeing that is how it ended up. In terms of villains we seemed to have saved the worst for last. Munroe was a megalomaniac, Goii a faithful servant to the bitter end, our final villain Aara was a bit of a self styled religious zealot. I feel like there could have been a bit more substance with that framework but she gets exactly one chapter and gets impaled by Lowell. That's it. In the end we still don't know what the Greater Geaan's planned on doing with the Enceledus key.

There was a nice bit of closure with Ming's character (who I quite liked) and one of the family members from Avery's part goes to the Photosynthian homeworld to die... for some reason? The epilogue is delivered by the Zuque who are a species of winged reptile that were artificially created on Titan by the Chinese and that was certainly a choice. All in all it was a mixed bag of wrapping things up.

I don't really have much else to say. This whole trilogy kinda washed over me and it was done before you knew it. Does it pose any deep philosophical questions? Does it make you think about what you read when you put it down? Does it test your understanding of geopolitics with the use of allegory? Well no but it's got a sort of pulpy, Flash Gordony kind of charm. The buddy cop dynamic between Lowell and Chang is pretty good. Some of the Sci-fi concepts feel well thought out and unique. What it lacks in capital S sci-fi it makes up for in pretty good action set pieces. If I was going to recommend one of these it would be as a "beach book". They aren't long and if you put your nose to it you might be able to put all three of these away in a summer vacation week. I was under the impression this was going to be the last of these but they tease a 4th book at the end. I have no idea what that would even be but hey perhaps if I am at the end of my list again I might pick it up for the hell of it.

An Unlikely Company

"Instead of haunting the living, the ghosts of the people they’d lost might, in time, become kindly spirits, watching over their old friends and allies until they found ways to move on."

This is the ending of the trilogy of Saturn's Legacy Part 3. Much has happened to our original friends, Carpenter Lowell, Lieutenants Vasko and Collins, Peter Chang and his father, Fai Chang, and not to forget the different Earth races as well as the Extraterrestrial races.

The lovely thing about Joshua James books is that in the disguise of a great space opera, philosophy about war vs peace is intensely explored. As is the concept of "the other ", and how integral working as a community is to the peace process.

Don't get me wrong, Lineage was just as exciting and nerver-wracking as the previous two books. I was glued to the pages and so you will be too. This trilogy is a five star read well worth your time.

In this episode, the small number of survivors of Enceladus’ annihilation are escaping to Titan to recover. Almost all of the ships have been severely damaged or destroyed, so passage home is uncertain, regardless of the species. With the arrival of various representatives, further investigation and discussion reveals the underlying reasons for development of the ‘Hearts’ that were planted on many celestial bodies in various galaxies. The battles for Saturn’s moons were over, but the remaining longer-range portents of these original plans built increasing tension which kept me glued to the story to the end. This is a fitting close to this portion of the series and I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. I’m eager to read more of Mr. James’ writing.

I have been thoroughly entertained by this book. The continuing story of what is happening around Saturn and it's moon Enceladus was very engrossing. And the intervention of the aliens like the Spawnmother (tribe of Muul) and the Photosynthians and their eventual interactions with the various human groups was very engrossing. In fact, I love the interactions of the various earth groups and how they were able to go from enemies to friends is interesting. I love how everything wrapped up, but now, knowing there is a fourth book to this series, I am getting excited to start the new book.

Great series, good storyline but this 3rd book just did not completely do it for me. Considered shelving it half way through, specially since the next book is only scheduled for next year some time. Sure, the book did wrap up quite OK at the end but for me too much time spent on "evolution" and idle chit chat between different factions and species. Perhaps it is just me that wanted a bit more suspense/action - book was to calm for me - but hey that is just me. Like I said - good series but I have read better!

Audiobook: I was entertained by this story, but not as much as the first two books in the trilogy. I was a little let down as I expected a more dramatic ending. I admired the worldbuilding. I appreciated the action scenes. I liked the characters, and I felt for them as they faced their adversities and challenges. I enjoyed Paul Heitsch's narration and all the various voices which he provided for the different characters. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

Man I love space flight!

I don't remember if I rated the first book in this series of not, no matter. I read the first 3 books in this series right in a row, why? Because the storyline and characters are so cool and interesting that I could not stop. This is the best new sci-fi series I have read all year. This is like 1950's pulp sci-fi with a modern take. Joshua James has hit it out of the park with this series. Well enough of that, on to book 4, enjoy.

Wow! Loved LINEAGE! Peter, Lowell, and friends continue their struggle to protect the key all the way to an exciting, incredibly imaginative ending.
Superbly written with wonderful human as well as alien characters, natural dialogue, and rousing action.

Peter, Lowell and the rest of the gang are back and working hard to protect the key and ultimately everyone on Earth. But it is not easy as this series has shown and this one is no different. Lots of action, danger, and amazing scenes to get lost in and enjoy. Entertaining and hard to put down, I had to see how what they would face and overcome. Lots of good and great characters.

Book three of Saturn’s Legacy

This has been such an interesting series. It has all the right elements. Conspiracy, alien invaders, space opera, military strategy, and did I mention aliens? Not just one , but three species, and a proto alien who seeds a moon with life. I’ll have to keep an eye on this author!

Gravity Bombs, Oh No!

Lineage (Saturn’s Legacy Book 3) by Joshua James is rip roaring story tying up all the loose ends from the first two in the series. Very satisfying, with a clear message that the way to go is through forming alliances to defeat the most powerful aggressors.

The series could end here, but there is yet another book coming in 2023. Can’t wait!

Not ending?

I felt this book wrapped everything up. Imo the characters were getting very weary fighting and felt it was time to end. When I saw there was another book to come I thought maybe it should just be another adventure in the same universe rather than a book 4? It was a good 3 book series.

Great finale to the series!

This was my favorite book of the 3! Good adventure great character development and just a great story. Several great points of depth and thoughtfulness (and humor) added as well to those who pay attention. I really appreciate an author who can do both. Great book!

this is a Fantastic science-fiction novel that I just did not want to put down. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next and this is a fantastic read. I’d highly recommend to anyone that loves science fiction, new worlds, exploration, and creation. This is the third book in the series and it ties together much of the story while leaving interesting tit bits as well.

Creating New Life

An amazing thought. Could humans really learn how to create new species? If we did could we be trusted to be respectful and accepting? Quite the tale.
