This book is like the Holy grail of non-toxic living!! So much wonderful, useful information. I started making non-toxic swaps in my home years ago and I love getting new information to help me do better for my family. It can get very overwhelming but this book lays it out for you and breaks it down by each room, making it so much easier to digest the information. The photos included are wonderful and it’s just a gorgeous book, overall.

Thank you, Storey Publishing, and Net Galley for a copy in return for my honest review!

I had to stop reading this halfway through when I got to the part about baby monitors and I read a sentence that said "Electronics and their low-EMF emissions are linked to epigenetic changes and cancer". This is an egregious misinterpretation of current research and is a terrible way of taking advantage of parents who are worried about their kids. I have a PhD in physics and I work in radiotherapy where we use ionizing radiation to treat cancer. In case you don't believe me (and honestly, I wouldn't believe a random person on the internet either), I'm going to go ahead and quote from cancer.gov: "No mechanism by which ELF-EMFs or radiofrequency radiation could cause cancer has been identified. Unlike high-energy (ionizing) radiation, EMFs in the non-ionizing part of the electromagnetic spectrum cannot damage DNA or cells directly."

While I think there actually is a lot of reasonable advice in this book, it is also full of anecdata. You just are not going to cure metastatic cancer by changing your mattress. This is taking advantage of people and it's not right.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Home Detox.

Wow, this book scared the bejesus out of me! But in a good way. Sort of.

I've been trying to declutter, reorganized, and live a healthier life, and Home Detox opened my eyes to so much!

I know we live in a world of plastic and overconsumption (how are we not made of plastic already?), but Home Detox revealed I don't know as much as I thought about how to detoxify my life and living spaces!

We live in a dangerous world; surrounded by plastic and toxic chemicals and products, but there are ways to live a healthier life and Home Detox will show you how.

The author demonstrates the numerous ways to cut toxicity from our lives and living spaces, and it's not hard to do.

It will take some adjusting since we've become a population dependent on plastic, but once you're living and breathing easier, you'll wonder how you went on living the way you used to!

Hi everyone!
Thank you Netgalley and Storey Publishing for the arc!

The author is a clinical practitioner that is specialised in working with people that have health problems that are worsened by the chemicals in our every day life.

At first the book is a bit overwhelming, because I didn't know that there could be so many. toxins in our homes!

It's very interesting and informative, the author goes through every room and explains the most common sources of toxins and how to properly clean your home.

I'm a student and recently moved out of my parents' house and this was very helpfu. I cannot wait to make my scrubs and cleaning solutions to live in a healthier environment!

What a magnificent read about all the toxins we use and have at home, and the alternatives. I am already leaving a fairly toxin free life, so most of this was not news to me, but I learned a couple of new tricks. However, I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in this subject, but might not yet have adopted a toxin-free life. I like the layout, pictures, and the great structure of the book!

I read this on my kindle, but purchased a hard copy to have as a reference. I especially enjoyed the emphasis the author put on sustainability. I think it has a lot of wonderful information but it’s important to remember that making every single swap in the book at once is simply impractical. Personally, I will continue using plastic toys outside and feel more comfortable with baby monitors in my kids’ rooms. But I’m excited to continue making slow and steady changes that benefit my family.

I think this book is a fantastic resource for a healthier lifestyle. I will be incorporating some of this information into my home life for a less toxic environment. However, I feel that more research should be done if you want to make any drastic changes.

This book has a lot of great advice. Some of which you’d have to be pretty wealthy to follow through with though. Other than that, it’s laid out perfectly for this type of informational read.

I picked up this book because of the cover and the idea that it would be possible to improve the quality of the environment of my home. A recent news story I read stated plastic particles were being found in human blood samples making me more aware of the issue. [Plastic bits in my blood!!]

What I got was lucid writing in a very attractive format with lots of white space and beautiful photos. The information was laid out in a way that allowed me to understand the need for detoxing my house [Chapter 1], what to buy or make to detox my home [Chapter 2], and THEN how to detox room by room, step by step, one chapter for each room. At the beginning of each of those chapters was a Toxic Ten list beside a photo of that room pointing out each toxic item in there. [Spoiler alert – air fresheners, incense, dryer sheets, memory foam, and aluminum are really bad.]

As I read the first chapter about detoxing, I thought of three women with whom I want to share this book. One is a mother of a toddler who is highly allergic to corn – like Epi pens and hospital trips allergic. Corn products are used everywhere. The next is a 41 year old woman who was diagnosed with secondary Raynaud’s phenomenon as a teenager. She also has to be very careful about what she is exposed to. And finally my next-door neighbor, a 30-something with two little girls under 5. In the summer of 2020 she got COVID-19 and after her stay in the hospital and her quarantine at home, the next week she had a heart attack. Since the heart attack, she returned to the hospital with double pneumonia. She went from being an active, vibrant mother of two very young children to a semi-invalid in a few months. All three of these women need to keep toxins away from their families and themselves. But how do you do that? The Home Detox Method gives people a system in an easy-to-comprehend format.

And if you need more, the last part of the book has an easy-to-read list of the chemical names and properties of the toxins that make up so many items in our houses, a list of resources based in the US, and a well-organized chapter by chapter reference list which is very easy to access.

After finishing the book, I stood in front of my open refrig and realized everything in it was wrapped or packaged in plastic except for 2 bottles of salsa, 3 jars of jam and some fruit. So, I have a long way to go. But I did make a start. I threw out that open box of dryer sheets and my old plastic cutting board. I didn’t buy the air freshener and liquid laundry detergent on my shopping list. I bought wool dryer balls, a bamboo cutting board, eco-friendly power laundry detergent, and a spider plant for my living room. Step by step, I will continue to use the Home Detox Method to make the environment I live in safer for me.

This is a beautiful looking book, with a clean layout and pure looking photos. It echoes the ‘clean’ message of the book and is a joy to read aesthetically.

The book itself contains advice and instruction for getting rid of toxins in each room of your house so you can follow along and feel really clean and healthy afterwards. There are case studies in each chapter telling us of real life cases who have been helped by detoxing their home and were very interesting reading. There were several nuggets of information that really got me thinking and I have already made a few changes in my life after reading this book.

However, this book is quite idealistic and I fear that you may go slightly mad after reading it, fearing all of the toxins that are waiting for you around the corner! It is hard to escape all of the toxins we encounter in every day life and whereas changing plastic chopping boards for bamboo is a pretty easy and inexpensive swap, buying a latex mattress because of all of the toxins in memory foam comes into a whole different cost bracket! I would say read the book and take from it what you can, but unless you are suffering an illness resulting from exposure to toxins, don’t stress about getting it all perfect. After all, millions of people are exposed to these toxins without knowing a thing about it and the majority are fine.

As a reader from the UK, I also noticed that the book was written from an American perspective so some of the items she suggests purchasing are not available here, but there are some fabulous blogs that I found after a quick search that give plenty of useful information.

With thanks to Netgalley and Storey Publishing for providing an advance review copy. All opinions are my own.

Book just arrived.
This book's purpose is to give the reader a method to detox the house from toxins around us.
After taking screenshots more than one time at pages I decided to continue taking screenshots but to purchase the book, somehow.
I am convinced that this type of book can’t be read just one time and you are done, to find it really effective or if you sense it could be useful just take the book.
And the book has just arrived, brand new.

Get ready to have your skin crawl while at the same getting motivated to make one of the best decisions of your life. Detoxing your home is a wonderful step to taking control of your health. There are a lot of books out there on this topic but many of them are overwhelming and struggle with keeping their layouts from getting cluttered and confusing. This book in comparison thoroughly hits all the right points without giving you a headache our a financial migraine. She breaks down the daily toxins we are exposed to and where the culprits hide in everyday objects and products. There are lots of excellent, easy recipes to replace most household chemicals and, from personal testimony, they work! Everything is methodically organized by room or house fixture as well so you can just start with one and do what you can before moving on to the next. She also covers personal care and body products! I will be adding this to my gift list for friends and family who want to clean up their home but don’t know where to start.
P.S. check out “teflon flu”…yikes!

"Home Detox is a practical, accessible guide to understanding the problem and how we can address it in our own homes in a manageable and affordable way."

What a magnificent book! This topic is new to me but the language and diagrams were accessible and not overwhelming. Packed with information about our homes, eco-friendly ways to live cleaner, and the seemingly "safe" products we use daily. Additionally, each chapter covers a different room (like that's extra points for organization), and the book uses visual guides that are helpful for breaking down information. I also appreciate that recipes are included in this book rather than it being separate. Overall, this is the perfect book for anyone looking into clean, sustainable, and eco-friendly living!

Thank you NetGalley and Storey Publishing for the ARC of Home Detox.

It turns out that I'm not quite as toxic as other people have claimed! LOL! But I did still learn a lot from this book. Here's my to do/to buy list in order to live a cleaner and less toxic life: Get a bamboo cutting board because the plastic ones are not only bad for the environment in a landfill, but as you cut and chop you chop off teeny tiny slivers of plastic that will get mixed in with your food and you end up consuming it. No bueno! Buy plant-based sponges next time around. They're not exotic or expensive, you can buy them in bulk from Amazon! Also, I need to go home and verify that all of my kitchen utensils are silicone and NOT plastic, which may melt into my food as I cook.

Then there's the stuff that I never even realized was out there: biodegradable trash bags? Why doesn't Costco carry this?!?! Charcoal filtered showerheads so we're not bathing in lead water. Not only should we all be making our own inexpensive and nontoxic cleaners mostly from vinegar, water, baking soda, and a couple other ingredients, but we should also be using dental floss made from natural materials. Did you know most commercially available floss contains Teflon? WTH?!? If plaque from our teeth can find its way into our systems and cause plaque buildup in arteries and our brains (Alzheimer's), then what will Teflon do to us?!? Yikes!! And lastly, I am sleeping on a mattress that I absolutely love but is probably killing us both slowly. Temper Pedic, I adore your memory foam, but I think our next mattress needs to be made of natural latex. And the last surprising thing I learned is that coconut oil is an effective bug repellant. Whaaaaa????? Apparently, it's true! It's even more effective/long lasting than DEET! Who knew?!? After all, we all go around all summer smelling of coconuts anyway because of sun screen! But apparently the actual coconut oil is different than just coconut scent. And I already have a big tub of it in my bathroom that I use for removing makeup prior to washing my face.

Daniella Chace, a toxicology clinician, takes us through a simple program to remove toxins from our homes. Research shows that we are more exposed to toxins in our home than we are outside.
The home detox program offers actionable steps that have the greatest positive impact on the health of Chace's clients through the years.

The first step in removing toxins is locating them, which is the heart of the program. This is a method for removing toxins and a path towards a nontoxic lifestyle. Chace's wish is that we will feel the joy and power that comes with taking control and making changes that improve our wellbeing. As we learn more about how toxins interfere with health, this cause-and-effect relationship becomes very clear.

The book is written in a very organized and systematic way with recipes for simple, natural cleaning solutions that effectively remove grease, grime, and harmful particulates. First, we learn the top ten toxins in each room. Then target these highly toxic items and decide to remove, replace, or modify them. Some of these items can be recycled or tossed out, while others will need to be replaced. And when we’re shopping for a household product, read the labels. Consider all options. Ask yourself: Is this product necessary? Do I know what its ingredients are? Are they safe to have in my home? If you can’t answer yes to all of these criteria, don’t buy it.

Soon, we will be able to feel the benefits of living a non-toxic life.

A very practical guide for every household.

The book gives you a lot of information about how our homes are full of toxins that are causing health issues. Every room in our house is filled with toxic items from the bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom to our garden. The author also explains how the plastics and other things we use are affecting the whole family and our neighbours. The author gives recipes to prepare liquid soap, glass spray, dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, bug spray and other essential items made of natural items available at home which are not toxic. Even the clothes we wear, and the current furniture made of wood we buy have some hazardous chemicals. We should create a good environment to live in and survive for the next generation.

We can reduce, reuse and produce less waste, small changes each day and really bringing a positive impact in our lives. The author explains on varied topics how electronics produce chemicals when they heat up and about EMF and how it affects kids more, the kitchen which we use like Teflon coated non-stick pans which are harmful to us.

We are ingesting, inhaling and absorbing a lot of hazardous chemicals from our homes than from outside. I found this book useful for me to know and help myself and my reader and nonreader friends to bring some changes to our home that can positively impact our surroundings. If you want to bring some changes into your lives and create a toxin-free zone the book is the right choice for you.

Some useful info but would require big changes to follow to the letter

Following home detoxing to the letter involves a lot of work and expense, and it would probably be easier to start from scratch. It can also be very easy to jump to conclusions and go overboard with the process.

This said, health is precious and it’s worth being aware of the information in this book as it may help to identify some things that are worth trying and see if they make a difference. I found the recipes for home made cleaners interesting and will be giving them a try.

My one big reservation relates to the use of essential oils. The author mentions the potential risks for children but I could find no reference of the potential risk to pets. Tea tree oil is a wonderful antimicrobial but it, and other essential oils, can also be dangerous to cats and dogs and other animals. On this basis I would be cautious in using the spray and monitor of the health of my pets to make sure I wasn’t harming them.

I was given this book from the author via netgalley only for the pleasure of reading and leaving an honest review should I choose to.

Notes for publisher - The risk of essential oils for pets should be mentioned in the book.

An informative, totally transfixing, and thoroughly researched book.

For someone like myself who suffers from a very debilitating illness, every little non-toxic addition to, and toxic subtraction from, my home helps. You will be shocked at the amount of harmful chemicals in your living, eating and sleeping areas. Even if you have read other books of this ilk and you think you have a good awareness of the subject, trust me, you'll learn one or even a couple of dozen new tips in this work.

Daniella Chace's day job is to help others with removing toxins from their house, thus making significant improvements in their health. The book is structured on a room-to-room basis, so whichever place you wish to start with, it's all laid out for you. If you don't understand what the initials mean on your current household cleaners, there's a handy listing for you to follow. The fact that the author provides a whole list of non-toxic and chemical-free alternatives, including homemade cleaners, make this book worth its weight in gold. An excellent piece of non-fiction.

I chose to read an ARC copy of this work, which I then voluntarily and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own. My thanks to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author.

This book would have been much more useful if it provided things like a scale of things that you *must*, do, things that are important, and things that are negotiable. The author oftentimes writes like everything in your home right now is awful and toxic and you MUST replace it with something that's, to be honest, sometimes very obscure (the section on mattresses, especially). I get that bamboo toilet paper is better for us, but saying that it's just as important to do that as it is to treat for mold in the bathroom lacks a sense of scale. (And seriously, suggesting bidets to replace toilet paper? Again, fine if you want/can spend the money...)

There aren't tips for people who rent, for example, and can't replace carpet. What really gives it the one star rating, though, is the fact that the author conflates toxins with environmental issues: ie, she writes about fast fashion and how bad it is for the planet, and you should never buy (I'm not kidding) off the rack clothes again. That's just not feasible for a lot of us.

In short, if this book had been a bunch of useful tips, with some talking about how you could go *father*, that would've been much more helpful.

This is a comprehensive, well-researched guide to detoxifying the home. An overview is given of the potential toxins in our environment and the havoc they can wreak. Then the author goes room by room detailing a plan for cleansing your home.

I found the graphic of the top ten toxic offenders in each space particularly helpful. The DIY cleaning recipes were simple and effective. There were suggestions for what to replace items with, and it could be helpful to have an appendix indicating where to source these nontoxic items.

I experienced all the emojis while reading this book. 🤯 because despite my decade of detoxing my home, there is still so much to consider. 🤔 because who can remember all of the chemical terms without a doctorate on the subject. 🤬 because how is all this junk allowed in our products in the first place?! And 😴 because it’s tiring just thinking about all the toxins that surround us.

Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review!

This is one of the few books I hope to keep for a long time. The author goes through different rooms in the house and breaks down items that have toxic chemicals, gives you alternative suggestions, and encourages ways to help you have better health with the changes you make. It was very good. A bunch of what was stated were things I have already done (like making my own cleaners for over a decade now). I was able to convince my mom to stop using Keurig coffee pods because of this book (it takes a lot to convince her to make changes usually).

One thing to know about Daniella Chace is that she LOVES tea tree oil. Just buy a huge bottle of it and it kills bacteria and cleanses the air everywhere. Bugs hate it too. These are things I already did as well, but she is a bit more extreme about tea tree oil than I ever have been.

I was wondering why tire playgrounds were no longer in use, but this book answered that for me even. I loved learning!

As the cover of the book says, "Everyone should own this book." You'll learn a lot.

Wow this was eye opening for me. I thought my house was pretty "clean" but after reading this I realize that I am only about 25% there in terms of eliminating toxins (memory foam mattress and plastic kitchen utensils I am looking at you!).

Lots of great tips on cleaning with natural products as well as practical swaps for replacing the toxic items in your home. There is some repetition in each chapter as she goes through each room with a detailed cleaning list (pretty much the same in all rooms) but I believe this was intended as people will pick one chapter and apply it rather than reading the whole book.

The section on clothing kind of lost me. I get that synthetic fabrics are bad but I am not wearing hemp or organic cotton to work out. This book has motivated me to replace a lot of things in my house with non toxic versions.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

As I age I find that my body has become more sensitive to EVERYTHING so when i saw this book I figured I would see if it could help me figure out what to do about it.
When I opened it up I was pleasantly surprised. It has a very readable format and beautiful photos. It is organized in a way that i could understand the need for detoxing (Chapter 1), What to buy or even better make with common household ingredients in order to detox my home (Chapter 2), and then the book goes into detail on how to detox each room step by step. Each room has its own chapter so you dont have to jump around! Each room also includes a photo with a list of the top ten hazardous items in that room and the step by step directions to detox them.

I think my favorite part of the book was learning the ingredients and amounts to make your own detoxing concoctions- this allows you to know exactly what you are using and in many cases is much cheaper than store bought products.

It’s horrifying how so many manufacturers just make things without regard for the health of their consumers. That’s why the information presented in this book is so essential - we need to be kept aware of the harmful products in our home where we spend most of our time.

Home Detox looks to be a comprehensive book on the subject - and it is based on many studies (you can find the long list at the back of the book.)

What I love most are the alternative things you can make and use instead. Love those recipes - especially when you can get the ingredients easily.. I was less enamoured that there are recipes that include a particular brand of cleaning product that is not accessible where I live.

4 and a half stars from me. Vastly helpful book for keeping away from products that make us sick. And some really good suggestions and recipes for alternatives.

Filled with beautiful and inspiring photos, this book by Daniella Chace, provides a step-by-step guide to all the toxins that are found in the home, garden and even makeup, and how to get rid of them. She provides a list of the cleaning equipment that you will need to start, and recipes based on natural ingredients, such as bicarb soda for cleaning various items. These are mostly easy to make, but some include Dr Bronner's products, which you may have to buy online in Australia.

Then she includes an extremely useful room-by-room guide to cleaning, including the laundry and the children's rooms. Apparently, tea-tree oil is wonderfully useful for cleaning, so I am certainly going to try that. I found this book so helpful that I am going to buy it!

I received this free ebook from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

This is a very comprehensive guide to understanding and eliminating toxins from your home. Each room is covered in detail as to what they likely are, where they specifically exist, and great alternatives are given to start replacing ones you currently use and are concerned about. Recipes for creating a chemical free cleaning caddy, and options for homemade body products are cost effective and straightforward. What I liked the best is the list of the potential "Toxic Ten" which is listed for each room of the house. An extensive glossary of chemicals is given and where they are most often found is great for reference. Obviously one can get overwhelmed with this topic, but this is a great addition for those who want to reduce their exposure to toxins we usually unbeknownst to ourselves live with. Would definitely add my cleaning/organizing and living minimally book collection.

I really enjoyed this book and will continue to be a valuable resource for me to reference. The author breaks down everything by room and shares what the biggest problems are, why, and how to resolve them.

There is an awesome glossary in the back and tons of references.

I’m super inspired to make more conscious choices for myself and my family (even if I was already doing pretty well!) because it all does add up little by little.

The great thing about this book is that even though it’s overwhelming, you don’t have to do everything at once, or at all. You can pick and choose what you think is realistic for you and try and try not to get bogged down by all of the toxic items she describes.

This book has lots of great advice about eliminating common toxic chemicals from your household. I would recommend this to people who are dealing with mystery health concerns or just generally worried about the impact of chemicals, and this book offers more scientific explanations than many similar ones.

However, the author really should have acknowledged how incredibly cost-prohibitive it is to buy safe items and replace what you already have in so many rooms of the house. The book comes from a perfectionist mindset where you're trying to be as perfectly clean as possible, and I wish that the author had encouraged people to do whatever is feasible for them, since baby steps over time or some limited changes are way better than doing nothing because you feel overwhelmed.

While the author gives a lot of tips to help you minimize toxins in your home, unfortunately some if it is not practical for everyone. Mainly low income individuals. some of the items like vinegar and essential oils are found in stores like dollar stores, so some of it can be utilized by that group of individuals, other items like castile soap is not. same for not using plastic, which is readily available at most stores, where glass or wooden items just are not accessible for everyone. But the author does such a good job of showing people how to detox literally every area in their home.

I received a copy of the book via Netgalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review of my own thoughts and opinions.
