Friend. Guard. Orphan. Lish Taylor thinks she knows who she is.
But when her team investigates a series of abductions, Lish finds herself guardian of a trembling little boy - one whose experience is unnervingly familiar. And the questions she’s harboured since she was a child, after witnessing the violent murder of her mother, flood to the surface. Lish’s answers lie just beyond the walls of her climate ravaged city; but chasing them means leaving behind the life she has built from nothing.
Captured by the brutal General Siosal, Lish must use her greatest secret to protect not only herself, but the General’s other victims. Aided by the mysterious and compelling Lochlain, Lish’s escape catapults her into the enchanting world of the Calahi, where magic is not something to hide, but a birthright and a gift from the land itself.
To avenge her mother’s death and stop Siosal’s reign of terror, Lish must work with Lochlain and his allies. But as their plans unfold and her connection with Lochlain grows, Lish begins to understand that in order to get what she wants, she may have to admit truths about herself that will change not only the course of her life, but the fate of a dying kingdom.
If you enjoyed "Among the Beasts and Briars", "Finnikin of the Rock", and similar adventures set in forests and led by amazing main characters, then don't hesitate—"Amber Wolf" is the perfect read for you. The word that comes to mind when I think about a way to describe it is "homey", since it's written in a warm tone that will appeal to any and every fantasy lover out there!
Since she witnessed her mother's death first hand, Lish Taylor has been serving as a guard in her city, and found a family in the shape of her team. When they stumble upon a series of abductions, Lish knows that the answers they need to stop it lie beyond the city walls; she's, however, unprepared for what she'll find out there. After a man by the name of Siosal takes her prisoner, and a mysterious soldier helps her escape, Lish finds herself in the magical world of Calahi, where people have magic thrumming in their veins and Nature is revered as a goddess. A world that's dying, nonetheless—something only Lish might be able to prevent.
One of the things I enjoyed the most was the way the story touches on climate change. I've read a lot of fantasy books set in a world or kingdom that's dying, but this time around, rather than it being about some sort of magic poisoning the land or some design of the gods, we find out that Nature is dying, and with it, the magic it provides Calahi with. Not only did this make for a compelling call to action for the main character; it also acted as a really accurate metaphor for what we're going through nowadays ourselves. Lish's city is being ravished by the elements, with a climate that's soured into harsh and unforgiving; Calahi's magic is running out; magic users are, as a result, getting weak and feeble. In a similar way to how our own destruction of the environment is turning against us in the shape of changing climate, ruined harvests, unpredictable weather, and a drop in the quality of the air and the land, the world presented in "Amber Wolf" is suffering the consequences of our kind's activity, and I personally found it both realistic, and called for.
It was also really nice to have Lish as the main character. Despite her strength and her fighting skills, she's kind, compassionate, and level-headed. This is exactly the kind of strong female I want to see more of in fiction! Quick-witted, sensible, and cautious, she was a character I enjoyed having as a lead—which is not very usual for me, with FMCs, since they tend to be annoying for no reason at all—, and I feel really invested in whatever else is in store for her. "Blue Pointed Star" can't fall into my hands fast enough!
All the other characters were excellent, as well, each of them fully fleshed out and three-dimensional. My heart goes out to Will first and foremost, since his loyalty to Lish and his kind heart won me over from the moment he was first mentioned—we love a Golden Retriever boy, in this house—, but I can't not mention Ciara and Lochlain as well. Despite how easy it is to make an effort to make the female main character likeable, and then forget about all the other women in the cast, Lauren Searson-Patrick made Ciara kind enough that I would hands-down read a spin-off about her. She was warm, firm, and resolute, which mingled perfectly well with her brother Lochlain's seriousness and protectiveness. They worked so well as a sibling duo!
Regarding the plot, this book doesn't give you even one moment to catch your breath. There's always something going on—without it becoming unnecessary filling at any point. Whenever an author is able to string together this amount of events without them feeling overwhelming or excessive, you know they're someone to watch out for! Such is the case with Lauren Searson-Patrick.
All in all, "Amber Wolf" was a delightful read, and I'm already thrilled for its sequel!
(Besides, have you seen that COVER!? Good Lord! The BEAUTY!!!)
I LOVED this book. It had me destroying my sleep patterns. It gave everything that I want from a fantastic fantasy story. Beautiful worlds, characters and relationships. Plenty of drawn out tension and heartbreak along the way. I cried several times. The presentation of a climate ravaged dystopian future was heartbreaking and so on-point for where we are now. I loved Lauren’s writing and the emotion she brought to the characters. And to top it all off the spice was fire! I would highly recommend this book! Also I CANNOT WAIT for the second book!!
Amber Wolf was given to me as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Amber wolf
Woah this was INSANE. What A ride! I could not put this book down. I started it right when I revived the copy and just finished it less than 12 hours later. Very well written!
It’s been a long time since I have found a book where I didn’t feel bored at some point into the book.
Quick pace but also filled with a great narrative and story line. I am extremely impressed with the world/realm that was created.
The bonds that a lot of the characters have are extremely soul binding that it just made me wish I had people like that in my life.
The romance aspect was quite refreshing reading about the respect that all parties involved had for each other.
There is much more I want to say about this book but I just need more time to put my thoughts down.
I can NOT wait for the second book as I need more!
First of all I must say that I was already intrigued to read "Amber Wolf" just for the beautiful cover!
And gladly my first impression was confirmed from the very first page!
I'm in love with this author's writing! She got me hooked right away! The description of the places made me feel like I was physically with the characters and I was seeing the same things they were!
Moreover the story is wonderful! I'm an avid fantasy reader and this book was absolutely one of the best of this genre that I've ever read!
Switching to the characters: it's impossible for me to choose a favourite one, because overall I liked them all!
I loved Lish's initiative and her fighting spirit! Her friends were wonderful too! I adored that they were a real family, always ready to help each other! I liked Ciara a lot! But I left the one that has a special place in my heart for last: Lochlain! His protectiveness towards Lish made me love him even more! Don't get me wrong, I admired other things about him too but I'll let you discover them on your own!
As I said previously in one of my reviews I always consider the book ending for my final evaluation...and "Amber Wolf" scored in this part! It was so beautiful that I re-read it!
If I had to choose a favourite part of this book I couldn’t...I definitely enjoyed every single page of it! And I know I have already said it, but one of the reasons why I'm really thrilled about "Amber Wolf" is that it's so beautifully written!
Right now I'm really looking forward to reading the sequel because I need to discover how things will turn out (I can't say more without making spoilers...who has read this book knows what I'm talking about)!
Summing all up: "Amber Wolf" made me feel like I was on an adventure with all the protagonists! Would I recommend it to other readers? Absolutely, I'm one hundred percent sure about it!
Fantasy readers now is your turn to jump on board and leave for this dream trip! Are you ready?
Can I just start with this- Amber Wolf is superbly written. It's set in a fully fleshed-out world, with amazing world-building that's easy to visualise, and characters that I connected with almost instantly. I was so pleasantly suprised by the calibre of this book, that this Aussie indie author is now on my Favourite Author list 🥰, and I need the physical book for my shelf and cozy re-reads.
This is an urban/ futuristic romantic fantasy, that follows the FMC Lish, who is a city guard with a secret. As she seeks answers to abductions, and possibly even her own mysterious childhood, she also finds a realm she knew nothing of- one that isn't affected by the devestating changing climate the humans are ravaged by, one where magic is an everyday part of life for the those that live there.
Enter Lochlain, the MMC. I'm not going to reveal much, because I truly think you should read this book and enjoy for yourself, but I'll leave this for you- tall, broad shoulders, flashing copper-ringed eyes, and all is not what it seems.
I just loved the story Lish's mother told her- about following the wolf to the Blue Pointed Star, and how there were tiny little snippets of clues scattered throughout the story.
This book truly has all the feels. ALL OF THEM. I was laughing, smirking, sobbing, sighing, and cheering.
Seriously, such a good book, one that I can see myself going back to again and again.
I highly recommend if you love romantasy, urban/ futuristic fantasy, (almost-) enemies to lovers, forced proximity, only one horse, a bit of court/ royal/ politcal intrigue, and magical mysteries.
☆ I received an ARC of this book from the author, which in no way sways my honest opinion, as stated in this review ☆
This was my final read of 2025 and honestly… what a way to close out the year.
Amber Wolf was such a refreshing fantasy read. It sidesteps so many of the usual tropes and gives you something that feels familiar enough to sink into, but new enough to keep you leaning forward. Lish, especially, is such a believable, grounded character. I loved that the characters didn’t feel like teenagers running around saving the world — there’s a solid twenty‑something energy to them that made the stakes and relationships land harder for me.
The worldbuilding and political threads are amazing. You can feel the depth without ever getting bogged down, and the cover? Absolutely stunning. Also, the romantic dynamics actually matter to the story. Nothing felt tacked on or forced, which can be rare these days.
As for the bits I didn’t love… honestly, it’s mostly because I didn’t want it to end. I could’ve happily stayed in this world for another 200 pages. And while I’m a sucker for a good love‑triangle‑with-teeth, the secret marriage twist wasn’t totally my thing. I would’ve preferred more direct tension between Phoenix and Lochlain rather than the Aevya/Lochlain marriage detour — but that’s 100% personal taste. The writing itself is strong throughout, so it didn’t pull me out of the story.
I’ve already dived into Book 2 (started yesterday, somehow already halfway through), and I’m very keen to see where everything goes next.
If you’re after a fantasy that feels fresh, character‑driven, and beautifully built, Amber Wolf is absolutely worth picking up.

Lauren you grabbed me and never let go. Amber Wolf is a wonderful Adult Fantasy book. From the dystopian future, a hidden world, magic, and of course an underlying theme of romance and spice… This book pulled me into the world and had me falling in love with the characters from the beginning right through to the end. With motifs that were intertwined throughout the entire book and the consistent roll of information delivered to the reader, this was an unputdownable read for me! I could SEE every scene as it took place. Lauren has done an incredible job in creating a believable and enticing world for her amazing characters to tell their stories in. The end of this book left me desperate for more! I have so many questions and I can’t wait to see what comes in the second book!
Oh my GOD - I finally finished the ARC I received for this book and I was blown away! This has everything I love in a fantasy book. Found family? Yes. Hidden magical gifts? Yes. Slow burn romance with a morally grey character who turns out to be a massive sweetheart? YES YES YES! I will definitely be buying the paperback version of this to keep on my shelf and I can’t wait for the second one!!
Amber Wolf was a fun book with very interesting world-building. The side-by-side worlds, with one so luscious yet depleting and one already ravaged by climate change, was such a fresh concept and I loved it. It's not something I would have expected to read in a fantasy book and yet it worked so well!
While I loved the world, the first quarter of the book was a bit slow for me, and it was hard to connect with the characters and the reasons for their actions in the beginning. I wanted to so badly but something just didn't click initially.
However, once the plot got going it was hard to put down and I sped through the last 75% in one night! It was a bit predictable but that didn't take away from the story, I was so so invested!
The romance was top-tier and I was rooting for them the whole time! Not too much spice either, it was a nice balance. I'd say this book is good for people who don't want their books too spicy. Also no cheating, yay!
There were moments in Amber Wolf that had me on the brink of tears, such as when Lish reached out, trying to get back to The Realm and nothing happened. I could feel that moment in my soul.
Overall this was a great romantic read with fresh world-building, a strong FMC and cute found family vibes. I 100% recommend this book and I will be reading the next book!

I received Amber Wolf when I was in a major reading slump. This book, THIS BOOK, pulled me out of that slump so quickly and kept me engaged the entire time I was reading. It was one of those finished reading it at 3am because I couldn’t put it down.
Lish is a strong female main character with great character development and story. We are propelled into her world right away which I found intriguing and creative.
The entire book is very original with a storyline that was a breath of fresh air. I would recommend it to anyone.
My favorite part, all the characters that you grow to love as soon as you start reading. Her characters are a range of personalities, emotions, and roles that fit the storyline so well and make you want to be a part of Lish’s team.
It’s got found family, slow burn, betrayal, and so much more. A great debut novel for this author!
✔️hidden world ✔️character driven ✔️found family ✔️slow burn romance ✔️little spice 🌶
Lish thinks she knows who she is until she’s captured during an investigation of abductions and kept prisoner by the brutal General Siosal. Upon her escape, Lish discovers a world where magic is a gift, but one that’s dying.
In order to avenge her mother’s death and stop Siosal from abducting and imprisoning more women, Lish is forced to confront her past and search for answers to hard truths about her life and the fate of the kingdom.
(TW: off page pregnancy loss)
This story got better with each page!
It isn’t a typical chosen-one story where the protagonist falls into the world and discovers they are the only one who can save it. Rather, Lish relies on her friends — new and old — and her fragmented past to direct her. Realistically, she has doubts and questions, while being driven by her desire to save the abducted women.
I loved Rory’s flirty banter and Lochlainn’s mysterious past. And the friend groups are just so good. You can feel the history and closeness of them! The integration of magic is tangible and makes the hidden world feel enchanted and a place I totally wish existed.
I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds in Book 2!
An advanced reader copy was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book catapults us into the action where we are thrown into the world of young Lish, as she experiences the trauma of witnessing her mother’s death.
We then fast forward to Lish today, a strong, confident woman leading a team of guards in a harsh, climate affected world of many hardships. Despite her trauma and childhood experiences in the orphanage, Lish is kind, loving and loyal. She has created a family and is making the most of her life… until her fate catches up with her and takes them all on an epic adventure.
I adore the way that we are completely immersed in Lish’s world as we hear her thoughts. This enables us to really see the deep love she has for all of the people in her life and the genuine connections she makes along the way. There was no mistaking her kind heart.
Will was equally as beautiful in his love and commitment to Lish. His quiet strength but proud respect and loyalty towards her was so endearing.
All of the characters quickly felt like my family, really supporting the comforting feeling of this book, despite the high level of adventure. I felt like I was one of the team as I read.
Throughout the book Lish is thrown into adventure after adventure in keeping me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The family of characters had me wanting to be there with them but the fast paced plot and the anticipation of what was to come next at every step had me unable to to put the book down. Just when I thought Lish was about to get a break I found her diving into another new experience. I loved that there was always something going on, yet every experience was purposeful, no adventure spam.
I don’t compare books, but I do love to match books that have a similar feeling. Amber wolf has such nail-biting adventure, found family who would do anything for each other, beautiful respectful romance, purely evil power hungry villain and an uprising to right a wrong world which felt like A court of thorns and roses series, The Cursebreakers trilogy, Defy the night duology, The prison healer trilogy and the Folk of the Air trilogy. So if you enjoyed any of these, I’m sure you will love Amber Wolf.
I loved this book so much that I will be ordering a physical copy to enjoy a cosy re-read. We all have books that just feel like home, comfort reads where you get to journey again with your book family, this book has joined mine.
Now…how long do I have to wait for the sequel?
**This book was given to me as an ARC from the author and this is an honest review in my own words.
•Super slow burn •Hidden identity •The Chosen One/Destiny •Orphan/Made Family •Fated Mates •Hidden Magic •Quest to save the realm and humanity •One horse trope
This was an exciting read!
It starts out as urban fantasy with the world going through major climate change, forcing humanity into distress and new world order.
The FMC, Lish, is cop but called a “guard” and she and her team start looking into a missing persons case. They soon discover that girls and women have been disappearing in similar scenarios for years, eerily similar to what Lish remembers of when her own mother was killed. This leads to Lish and Will heading out to follow a lead and they themselves getting captured.
They very quickly realize that they have crossed into another realm with magic beings and the general in charge takes particular interest in Lish.
But there’s someone sneaking into the dungeons everyday to heal the women and possibly to help them escape. His magic seems to speak to Lish.
What will become of Lish? Will she get out? Who is this stranger? And why does the general want her? And why was Lish’s mother killed?
I really enjoyed this new book and I’m excited for what I’m sure will be the thrilling conclusion to this low fantasy duology.
It was an easy read with a whole host of characters who were interesting. The beginning of this book reads like a true crime novel, but once the fantasy aspects come into play, the true plot is revealed.
The FMC is intelligent and capable, trusting her own instincts and not too quick to trust others.
The MMC is intriguing. He seems to already possess an air of authority about him that others naturally gravitate toward and respect. He’s secretive but supportive, never pressuring the FMC to do anything she doesn’t want to.
This isn’t exactly what I’d call “spicy” but there is good tension and there are two scenes with some description, but it’s barely a step above fade to black.
If you like fantasy, with found family, and adventure definitely give Amber Wolf a try! Told in first person from the main characters POV, the story follows Alice and those closest to her as they work to solve the mystery of missing females. As they dig deeper and more information surfaces, only more questions arise not only about the case, but for Alice as well.
This was a interesting read and a great start to this new duology. I enjoyed the world building and the characters, although would have liked to see other areas fleshed out. The affection and care with the found family felt sincere and fully developed and you could tell that they truly looked out of each other.
Overall, I found the story intriguing and enjoyable to read, if not a bit predictable at times, and gave it a 3/5 ⭐️ with a 1/5 spicy pepper for various mentions with foggy details.
I loved the cover on this book! The florals and line work are just gorgeous!
Surprisingly, I had a hard time summarizing my thoughts on this without a lot of spoilers so my likes/dislikes are below if anyone is interested.
I did receive an ARC of this for an honest review and loved the opportunity to read early, but I wish this one wasn’t an ARC only so I could have more people to discuss with!

Likes: - The world building - Found Family - Magical elements
Mehs: - Unclear time-frame (It read like pre-modern times, but then discussed texting and electricity being a luxury. Needed more development on these topics to flesh out the setting and get a feel for the world.) - Romantic relationships (this is the development of romance, not the level of spice) - Wanted more WOLF references - whether in the community lore or with Alice's history. - Felt some areas needed to be more fleshed out.

Why did I buy this book - Because the cover is gorgeous. Because Lauren is an Aussie Indie author who I discovered on Bookstagram– Because It is a Fantasy and I love fantasy.
Why did I love this book - The cover is gorgeous!
The MC Lish is another of those awesome hard-ass, brave but broken, capable, strong, intelligent females who I love. The story is told from Lish's POV so we are able to truly understand her and what motivates her choices. She has some secrets. Lochlain is the male MC and he is the strong silent type you just can't help but swoon over. General Siosal is that inherently power hungry evil character you love to loathe.
The world building is sublime. There is the unbearably hot, scorched Rhyton in it's post climate change apocalyptic harshness and in contrast the cool, green, lush world of the Realm where magic exists along with meadows and forests. The Realm has an old world sense to it with it's cobblestone streets and Rhyton is futuristic. I love the dynamic that these two parts of the world present. The mysteriousness of the Realm, with it being near but far from Rhyton appeals to my fantasy lover senses.
The story builds at a good pace to the massive climax where you will be on the edge of your seat. Some interesting situations occur and keep you guessing. A few times your heart will ache for our MC as her story unfolds and you can't help but become invested in her mission and her life.
This fantasy has it all – friends to lovers, forced proximity, political intrigue, fighting to save the world, searching for royalty, friendship and support, magic and mystery. If you are a fantasy lover, you will surely enjoy this cleverly plotted and written story. I am looking forward to the release of the second book in the duology.
AMBER WOLF is a fast-paced, romantic fantasy following our heroine, Lish, as her search to uncover a kidnapper becomes a quest to find answers about herself and her mysterious past.
While I don’t want to give too much away, Lish’s world is complex, Searson-Patrick writes evocatively of her setting, drawing clear inspiration from our own context and adding a chilling undertone to her fantasy narrative. I’m looking forward to seeing this aspect of the series developed further in the novel’s sequel.
Lish is a mature, loyal, and committed character, with a web of beautiful connections to her found family, both in the guard and those she finds during her adventures. Her relationships with those around her are gentle, respectful, and full of open communication and consent, and I really enjoyed the low level of angst this novel offers. Lish is brave and fierce when provoked, and those around her support her choices and respect her boundaries, letting her rely on herself and her own abilities as much as she does on others.
Searson-Patrick's prose is intimate and immediate, giving her readers a clear window into Lish's thoughts, complexities, and motivations. Her love for her characters and for Lish’s story is tangible throughout this debut novel, casting a warmth over the narrative that is hard to resist.
All up, this is an enthralling fantasy adventure, complete with romance, mystery, magic, found family, destiny, and a dash of dystopia — what more could you want?
I mainly read contemporary romance but I wanted to read something different. I haven’t read fantasy in a while and the book blurb drew me in. This book is full of adventure, action, and romance. I am so glad I discovered it. Reading it is like playing an epic movie in your head. The few times I have read fantasy I have to keep track of important things like the character’s world, terms, and “rules.” I am kind of slow when it comes to those things, but this book had a good pace. The world building was done well. I was able to understand Alice’s (AKA Lish) world and the importance of certain events. I enjoyed getting to know Lish’s friends and the habitants of the magical realm. I could not put the book down because I was so intrigued and needed to know what happened next. The chemistry between Lish and her love interest was also great. There is a love triangle but it was handled well and it added more importance to the plot. You can’t help but root for Lish as she tries to discover who she really is and how powerful she can be. There were lots of twists and turns towards the last part of the book and it was so exciting. I do wish some things are explained more, but I assume it’s going to be addressed in the second book. I can’t wait for it! I highly recommend this book if you enjoy fantasy, or you want to start reading the genre. You will be going on an adventure to uncover a mystery.
I really Can't Fault this book! *Spoiler Free Review*
The pacing was perfect, the characters were diverse, honest and well written, the cadence was lovely! It was textbook perfectly written.
So what does that mean for the story? Well it was NOT lacking! Just like the writing the storyline itself was also perfection. The world building was substantial, enough to know exactly what you needed and paint the perfect picture of the world without being bogged down with unnecessary descriptions of every single tree. The characters were very well developed and authentic, each had their strengths and weaknesses.
There was adventure and emotion, danger and romance, risk and reward, a journey of discovery and found family. Every character had an important role in the progression of the story. Nothing felt out of place and the authenticity was very real. The Journey was well thought out and the story really dragged me deep into the world!
So many pieces to this story, but not enough to confuse or lose track of what is happening. There are many turning wheels in this story, but I never felt lost and was easily able to immerse myself in the story.
There was a bit of spice which was written so well it did not detract from the story, nor did it feel out of place. It was written in the tasteful way that I personally enjoy in a fantasy book.
It was a wonderfully emotive and engaging read and I highly recommend reading this Duology.
Lish is an orphan who just wants to belong. Having found her best friend, Will, at an orphanage, both join the guard who protect the local people of Rhyton. However, girls continue to go missing. When Lish decides to look into this, she finds rumours and accounts of The Whispers. As she and best friend Will head off to investigate, they are captured by General Soisal.
Lish must rely on her inner flame and those around her to escape, get the captured girls to safety and stop these kidnaps from happening. Along the way she will find that not all is what she thought it was, and maybe she will be shown her place in all this (quoting star wars, sorry).
So, who is she? Will she stop girls from being kidnaped? Who will she end up in a relationship with at the end of the story? Why are magical people always so hot??
This is a debut of epic proportions by Lauren Searson-Patrick. I am thrilled that she is a local Australian author. Her character development, world building and magnificent storyline meant I was never bored. I loved every minute. I CANNOT wait to read Blue Pointed Star (BPS), the second novel in the duology. Moderate spice. A little more and I would have been over the moon. Mind you, BPS??
Big thanks to Lauren for sending me a free copy so that I could read the BPS ARC.
5 stars - literally can't think of a single thing I didn't enjoy.
Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of Amber Wolf in return for an honest review!
First I'm so surprised that this is a debut book... It's so well written, the world building is incredible, the characters feel real and the plot is so well crafted.
This follows Lish who lives in a world ravished by climate change where she works as a guard. after a series of girls go missing, her and her best friend Will go to try and find out who's behind these disappearances. Whilst on their journey they get abducted by a group called the Whispers and taken to the Realm. Here Lish meets Locklain and starts to work out the truth behind these disappearances and how she fits into everything.
I feel like so much happened in this book and the pacing was really well done. There were a lot of changes in location and new characters introduced which kept me interested the whole time. I loved Lish and Will's friendship, Locklain and Ciara's sibling dynamic but most of all I fell in love with Lish and Locklain. I felt like it happened so naturally and they work so well together.
This is the first book of Lauren Searson-Patrick's that I have read and I quite enjoyed it. I love supporting fellow Aussies, and will continue to support Lauren in her writing career. I loved the friendships in this story, and the romance was so so so sweet. I really hope to see more of these characters in the follow up book, Blue Pointed Star. The FMC finds herself in some pretty dire situations pretty early on in the plot, and the twists near the end were good too. I feel, however, that with a bit of tweaking, this could have potentially been a 4.5 or 5 star read. There were a couple of parts where I was like, huh? And had to reread a few times to make it make sense. I also got a bit annoyed with how the Aussie words like mum and stack were used alongside American spelled words like ass. Pick an English and stick to it. I also found that some of the character voices all felt very much the same to me. I would have liked to see more fatal flaws in the side characters. I did like Lish's fatal flaw, but I would have liked to see a little more development in her character arc from the beginning of the book to the end, same for Lochlain. Overall, however, I enjoyed this story and I couldn't put it down.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of Amber Wolf in exchange for an honest review.

This book drew me in right from the start. Lauren has created an immersive world that feels both familiar and magically new. The story is told through the POV of the main character, Lish, a woman in the city of Rhyton’s guard. Despite her tragic childhood, Lish has carved out a place for herself with a career and friends who have become family. But when a series of troubling disappearances begin, Lish is forced to delve into the mysteries of her own past, starting her on a journey that upends everything she thinks she knows about who she is and where she comes from.
And, of course, there’s the romance. A slow burn with a brooding, morally grey hero that is so so good.
But the thing that kept me hooked was the characters. They are complex, interesting, funny, and resilient. Lauren has very cleverly given Lish an ability that enriches her interactions with those around her in a really satisfying way. This was one of my favorite elements to this story. I laughed, I cried, I swooned, and I cheered these characters on page after page.
The start of this book was soooooo confusing. I almost put it down a number of times as I just couldn’t work out what was going on. I persevered and the story redeemed itself a little bit by the halfway mark. I struggled to understand the magical world but once the story really got going I was invested and will even read the second book.
Lish is a complete badass and I do love a good strong female lead. I do also like that Lish was aware of her powers and it wasn’t something that she magically discovered in time to save the day. I do have a soft spot for Lochlain too. He is the hero of this story and has a ‘touch her and I’ll kill you’ vibe 🔥 along with being a bit of a grump. Ciara was another awesome addition to the cast. She is warm, caring and resolute. The perfect opposite characteristics to her brother Lochlain.
Something I found pretty cool was that there was a link to climate change throughout the story. In this book, nature is dying and it takes away the magic of the Calahi. It was a great call to action for our heroes and something relevant to our lives.
Lish & friends begin the book by investigating the case of a missing girl and through a series of events Lish ends up imprisoned. But that’s only the first part of this book! We meet an array of side characters both human and not, and there is even a hidden magical realm.
If you love found family and adventure then I think you will enjoy this one. I also think it will appeal to fans of SJMAAS due to the Calahi being similar to a Fae (but this isn’t as steamy as one of Sarah’s books). Amber Wolf almost has a dystopian feel to it too. Especially as we read about super storms ravaging the human world.
What I liked about this book was that it didn’t rely on the ‘chosen one’ trope, in fact, Lish needs her friends to help her save the realm. Amber Wolf is seeped in magic, but I think the real magic of this book is in the found family Lish finds in both the human and magic worlds.
I received this book as an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
I have been reading a lot of fantasy of late and the change of voice with this book gave me pause for a while. That's not a bad thing, different can be good and welcome. I found the premise of the plot interesting and more moments than not I was grabbed by beautiful descriptions and great world building. There are a few things I noticed that can be fixed with a little more editing but it wasn't anything that took away from the beauty of this book. The characters are believable in their desires and well developed. I can't wait to see this progress more in book two.
New author, Lauren Searson-Patrick's soon to be published (June 4 2022) fantasy novel: Amber Wolf, reflects characters living Martin Niemöller's poem “First they came for the, … .” Rather than not speaking out as the poem implies, the characters change their action based on the lead Lish's determination, allowing the threads of connection entwining us all to be their impetus and source of power. What's happening to others connects them with rippling effects. Otherworlds, magic, mystery, and romance in a backdrop of environmental complications and missing girls propels rapid reading. Kudos @laurenspbooks !
At first it took me a little while to get into this book. But the way Lauren magically weaves the world is so enthralling that I could not put the book down. I am hooked! The story line flowed nicely and the characters were written so well. The relationships between the different characters were so in-depth. I personally could have done with a few more spicy scenes, but the ones later in the book were❤️🔥. I love a strong FMC! And that is what we got with Lish. She is strong and knows what she wants.
⭐Spice 3.5/5 ⭐World building 4.9/5 ⭐Strong FMC ⭐No cheating ⭐Second book coming out really soon
I'm not usually a fan of fantasy, but this novel borders more towards dystopian and I like that. It follows the story of Lish as she sets out to discover who she is and where she belongs. The first few chapters were a bit slow, but BELIEVE ME, you need to get through those because I could not put it down once the action and plot line started to develop. Even though some of the story is predictable, the small accents that are added to the narrative mean it there is always a surprise for the reader. Just enough romance (and some steam) to keep it real, I cannot wait to read the second book in this duology.
4.5 stars The cover is so pretty! I saw the cover and then immediately looked to see if the story was something I'd like to read. It definitely was. The prologue was intriguing, but the story took itself took me a little while to get into. Once I kept reading, however, I was hooked. The world - both the human and magical parts, the characters, the slow-burn romance, and the emotions - loved it all. The ending was sweet, but also left questions for the next one. Hoping I don't have to wait too long to see how it all plays out!
