Lucy’s family thought she married the perfect man: prestigious doctor, loved by all. Yet, no one really knew what happened behind closed doors. After finding the courage to leave, Lucy’s determined to find herself once again. Suddenly in need of a new place to live, she finds herself roommates with the new hunky paramedic. Will she have the courage to open herself up to someone she barely knows? That is, until witnessing a tragedy showed him that he wanted more in life. Determined to help others, Derek finds himself with the chance to prove his worth by protecting the woman he’s lusted over for years. The moment she agrees to move into his spare room, he vows to care for her and keep her safe.
Will Derek be able to save Lucy from her narcissistic ex, or will he be forced to live with another failure?
Elizabella Baker has always dreamed of being a writer. As an avid book lover who has read thousands of books, she finally decided to pursue that dream and become a published author. She published her first book in January 2021.
Elizabella is a mother of two and a fan of all things romantic. She enjoys spending time with her family and making as many memories as she can.
This series is shaping up to be so much more than I expect with every book. It was obvious in the first books that Lucy was going through something. But you’d better brace, because it’s even more than you likely imagined. And she’s stronger than anyone thought. She has to be in order to rediscover herself, get to know the Lucy she’s meant to be, and save herself when the time is right. And having Derek by her side, at her back, and guarding her heart while handing her his makes it all the sweeter.
Lucy and Derek may be my favorite couple yet. He can see that he needs to handle her with care, but that doesn’t mean she’s breakable. Lucy just needs someone to feel safe to be herself and maybe explore who she could be, and Derek is definitely the man for the job. He’s also the man for her future and her forever, as long as he gets the chance. And he’s not about to ruin this shot with the woman he’s been attracted to for far longer than she could guess. When they build their foundation on friendship and some honesty, as well as a refusal to hide fears, nothing can keep them down for long.
This book is the third book in the Heroes of Lone Star series and focuses on one of the Lynch siblings. It is a thrilling story filled with suspense, drama, danger, and tension. Once you start reading, you won't be able to put it down. The Lynch family consists of dedicated men and women who work to give back to the community.
Lucy stayed much longer than she should in an abusive marriage but the bad thing about it all was keeping it hidden from everyone because now he is out for blood. I'm completely hooked on this series and the characters with their banter and sarcasm. The mix of action, danger, fun, and laughter has me fully engaged.
What a fantastic read! Derek is the whole package. He’s sexy, super sweet, alpha but steps back and gives Lucy her space. Lucy lived years suffering from domestic abuse. She left and fought back. I loved the courage she showed to start a new life. I read this book in one sitting. I just couldn’t put it down. Such an awesome read with incredible writing.
This book absolutely wrecked me—in the best possible way.
Lucy’s story is raw, heartbreaking, and painfully real. Watching her escape a picture-perfect marriage that hides unimaginable abuse is both devastating and empowering. Her journey toward reclaiming her voice, her strength, and her sense of self is written with so much care and emotional depth that it’s impossible not to root for her every step of the way.
And Derek Murphy? The ultimate protector hero. A former military man turned paramedic, he’s steady, selfless, and quietly fierce in his devotion. His longing, his patience, and his unwavering need to keep Lucy safe had my heart in a chokehold. The roommates-to-lovers tension is delicious, but it’s the trust they build—slowly, tenderly—that truly makes this romance shine.
The suspense element adds a sharp edge to the story, with Lucy’s narcissistic ex looming like a constant threat. The danger feels real, the stakes are high, and the payoff is deeply satisfying. This is more than a love story—it’s about survival, healing, and choosing love after fear.
Emotional, gripping, and impossible to put down. If you love protective heroes, resilient heroines, and romantic suspense that hits you right in the chest, this one is a must-read. 💔➡️❤️🔥
June DeBorahae delivers a stunning performance. Her portrayal of Lucy is raw and vulnerable, capturing every crack in her voice, every moment of doubt, and every flicker of hope. She made Lucy’s pain feel real—and her healing even more triumphant.
And Derek Murphy… wow. Jack Calihan brings him to life with the perfect mix of quiet intensity, tenderness, and unwavering protectiveness. His voice embodies the ultimate protector hero—steady, patient, and fiercely devoted. Every word Derek speaks feels like a promise, and Jack absolutely nails the emotional weight behind it.
The romantic suspense keeps your heart racing, with Lucy’s narcissistic ex looming as a very real and terrifying threat. The chemistry between Lucy and Derek simmers, builds, and explodes in all the right ways, making the payoff incredibly satisfying.
This is more than a romance—it’s a story of survival, trust, and choosing love after trauma. With June DeBorahae and Jack Calihan at the mic, this audiobook is unforgettable.
Highly recommend for fans of emotional healing, protective heroes, and romantic suspense that stays with you long after the final chapter. 💔❤️🔥🎧
“Caring For Lucy”: Heroes of Lone Star Series (Book 3) by Elizabella Baker
The saying, “you never know what really happens behind closed doors” is so true. Things may not always seem to be what they are, especially, in a marriage. This is the case for Lucy! Everyone is oblivious to what a piece of crap her husband really is. Not even her family sees it.
Being a nurse, Lucy is always taking care of everyone else. She is kind, compassionate, loving and beautiful. Yet, nobody would guess she is broken inside. Suffering domestic abuse has taken its toll. So much so, Lucy finally found the courage to leave and start a new life. While working in the ER, she catches the eye of paramedic Derek Murphy.
Derek Murphy can’t get Lucy out of his mind! He is very attracted to her. However, noticing a wedding ring, respectfully, he stays away. Yet, the attraction is still there. Only to find out later she has left her husband (a doctor at the same hospital) and is trying moving on. He can only hope he might have a chance with her.
As fate would have it, a knock on Derek’s door leads these two to get to know one another better. Lucy moves in and rents a room in his house. As time passes, feelings start to come to fruition and one thing leads to another. At this point, Derek wants nothing more than to be with her, to protect her, help her heal. Yet, giving her space to find herself again. Once these two get together you can’t help feel they were always meant to be together. They are soulmates!
The chemistry these two have is pretty hot. “Oh God! … Certainly not God baby but I appreciate the praise. I’m still not done with you though.” (Insert sigh) Author Elizabella Baker has written these two characters so well. Not to mention their sexy scenes are pretty sexy! 🔥🔥🔥
This series is turning out to be sooo good! They have all been page turners. One sit reads. The next sibling I’m so looking forward to reading is Lucy’s sister Alexa! Firecracker indeed with so many facets to her! Can’t wait to have that baby in my palms. Thank you Elizabella Baker for another great read!
Will Lucy escape her psycho ex husband and finally find love with a man that will worship her?
What an awsome story, fate defanatly brought Lucy and Derek together, but can so many obstacles keep them together growing stronger, or tear them apart? Derek is a paramedic and knoticed Lucy an ER nurse right away, but when he sees she has a wedding ring he thinks it is just not ment to be. What he doesn't know is Lucy is in an awful marriage to her husband Matthew a doctor. Unfortunately not many people know how bad of a marriage it is, not even Lucy's large protective family and friends. But it would be hard to know because Matthew has driven every one in Lucy's life far away, and kept them at a distance, so they will never see the abuse and controle Matthew has over Lucy. Finally Lucy has had enough and leaves Matthew, she walks away from her life and pritty much everything in it, to start over, except her job at the hospital, she refuses to let Matthew take that away from her. Lucy and Derek are brought together thorough fate, and Lucy learns what a true relationship is like, one where there is respect and love, honesty and lots of laughter and sex that is mind blowing for the first time in her life. Unfortunately Doctor Matthew is not ready to let what he considers his property, Lucy, go and his goal is to make her and Derek's life a living hell while also getting his property back. Will he succeed and tear apart the only real true relationship Lucy has ever had, with his crazy psychopathic ways? Or is the love and connection Lucy and Derek have, win because fate realy did bring two sole mates together. You just will have to read this book to see if Derek can forever care for Lucy.
Caring for Lucy was such a refreshing break from my usual dark, high-intensity romance reads—but don’t mistake that for a lackluster story. This one sizzled, warmed, and still had a bite to it.
This was my first book by Elizabella Baker, and if I’m being honest, I initially chose the audiobook because of two voice actors I already love and the length of the story. What I got was a reminder of why I love those performers—and a strong desire to read more from this author and the Hearts of Lone Star series.
June deBorahae. plays Lucy, a woman struggling under the weight of a controlling husband—the only life she’s ever known. Jack Calihan voices Derek, the EMT who has always had eyes for Lucy. Add a “looking for an apartment to rent” and an “I have an apartment to rent,” and BAM—that’s where the story truly takes off.
This audiobook is dual narration, and it’s the first time I’ve heard either of these voice actors play the opposite sex. I’ll admit, I’ve gotten so used to duet narration that I sometimes forget how much I love dual—but this reminded me in the best way.
June absolutely nailed Lucy—from her subdued, careful demeanor with her husband to her gradual, beautiful new lease on life with Derek. She also did a fantastic job with the male roles in her chapters. That kind of versatility? Pure talent.
And Jack Calihan—I’d heard him once before and remembered loving his voice, but this performance really stood out. Hearing him handle both male and female roles so seamlessly was impressive. There’s something surreal about realizing after a chapter ends that everything you just pictured playing out in your head came from one voice.
How do I keep getting so lucky and picking audiobooks with this level of talent? 🎧✨
It was actually better than I expected. Elizabella has touched upon many vulnerable topics making the story angsty and poignant. Domestic abuse and emotional-verbal humiliation forces Lucy to walk out on her doctor husband -Matthew. He was downright evil, pressuring her to have a baby so he could manipulate her. Leaving her marriage behind, she moves onto spare bedroom of Derek Murphy. He’s a generous, compassionate first responder in the hospital Lucy works at. He secretly crushes on her so now becomes the perfect time for both of them to find solace in each others arms Obv Mathew stalks and hounds her till the twist in the he really crosses the line. Narration by June Deborah’s and jack calihan adds to the drama and pulls you in. Very engaging plot, written very well “4 stars for life savers” Follow me on: Email🌻 Bookbub 🌻 Twitter🌻 Instagram🌻 Blog🌻 Facebook🌻 Amazon 🌻 TikTok 🌻 StoryGraph 🌻 YouTube 🌻
Ms. Baker will have you falling in love with Derek and wanting to hug Lucy. Caring for Lucy is a very emotional, beautifully written and gripping romance that will pull on your heartstrings. The love and healing that they shared were perfect and to see the way that they were there for one another had me feeling all warm and fuzzy.
We had a bit of an insight into Lucy but now we know just exactly what her life was really like. She hid her suffering at the hands of the man that was supposed to protect her. Her strength and determination are what made her able to start a new life. That and the fact that she was renting a room from the sexy paramedic Derek. Could she be having feelings for him? Derek has been infatuated with Lucy for years and when she shows up at his door to rent out his spare room, he thinks that he is in heaven. He knows she is hiding something about the way her marriage ended and is determined to keep her safe and cared for. Derek is definitely a cinnamon-roll alpha male that truly loves Lucy and wants to be there to protect her but he also sees that she needs her space and he is willing to give her anything that she wants. You couldn't ask for a better man in your life.
I enjoyed that we were reintroduced to her siblings and witnessed the closeness that they share.
Ms. Baker has not disappointed with this new series and although Caring For Lucy is a standalone, I do suggest reading the first two books in this series. Be prepared to not being able to put this book down and claim a new book-boyfriend,
Caring for Lucy Heroes of Lone Star 3 By Elizabella Baker Narrated by Jack Callihan, June Deborahae
I love Elizabella Baker! She pushes all the right buttons for me in her stories. This one deals with domestic abuse, lack of confidence and how to find your person. Lucy has served her older husband, Matthew with divorce papers. She knows it's not going to be easy, but she needs to be away from him. He is vocal and a bully in all ways, but she is determined. She moves in with Derek, his extra room is perfect for her to start out. He has had a crush on her since the first time he saw her, and now that she is free, he is able to act on it. But her baggage is real, her ex is dangerous and she knows it. Will these two be able to find their happily ever after? Packed with a rising suspense, and when you think you know how it's going to go, a twist happens that I know I didn't see coming. It's a fantastic look at what could happen in real life packed into my romantic escape. Loved it!
June Deborahae and Jack Callihan work really well together for this one. Deborahae builds Lucy from the woman she was with Matthew to the woman she is meant to be. Her emotions feel real, uncontainable from her fear to her strength to her passion. Callihan is a deviant as Matthew. A respected doctor but a crazy man, his voice is maniacal! Then he is Derek. Passionate, warm, loving and everything that a true hero is. His talent as a voice actor is amazing. Loved these two and their performance.
Here is my clear your schedule warning. Once you pick this book up you won't want to put it down. I can honestly say that by the end my heart was still pounding…
Lucy has hidden her situation behind a smile for a decade. Finally feeling freedom with divorce papers delivered. Only, the man refuses to sign them and let her go but becomes extremely angry.
Her brother, a protector in another city, trying to learn if she was ok or needed family support, attempting a joking reconnect…
"You know you can tell me, Lucy Goosey. I even promise not to murder him.” His voice soothed her. “I can’t make promises for my fiancée, though. Charlotte insists she has ties to a hit man and we both know she doesn’t make threats idly.”
Oh my! Ok, this is a standalone book but if you haven't read the other books in the "Hero's of Lonestar", I recommend them… and you will meet some equally amazing characters. Oh and Wes' Charlie and Bravo Team but I digress.
And Derek… he is the thoughtful, kind, caring, and fiercely protective hero we have come to expect from Elizabella. She has brought her characters to life in the most magnificently intense and intriguing of stories.
This story really pulled at my heartstrings but also kept me on the edge of my seat. Lucy has finally found the courage to leave a controlling marriage. However she realises that moving on isn't going to be as easy as she hoped because her ex just won't let go.
She ends up sharing a house with Derek, a paramedic who has liked Lucy for a long time, but stayed away because she was married. Derek was just what she needed —he’s incredibly protective and determined to make sure Lucy feels safe. Watching their connection grow was super sweet.
The story moves fast, and it does a great job of mixing those sweet, romantic moments with some tension. The book does also deal with a very toxic relationship.
Lucy learns about healing and finding someone who truly has her back. It was hard to put down once I started.
🎧 I listened via audio-book and I loved listening to June DeVorahae and Jack Callihan. Their voices matched the characters perfectly and really pulled me into their story. Its a duel narration, and both do an amazing job at the other characters voice during the other POV chapters. I would absolutely listen to them both again. 🎧
Elizabella I just want to say that I absolutely love this book from start to finish. This book is the perfect balance of suspense, oh my moments, passion, instant connections, and so many other things. This is officially the second ALC I’ve received from Blue Nose that you have written Elizabella and you didn’t disappoint one bit.
I just wanna applaud you June and Jack for doing a spectacular job of having me on pins and needles as I read and listen to your phenomenal performance. There was so many twist in terms that I didn’t know what to expect and I was here for it. I absolutely love the relationship between Lucy and Derek. I absolutely love how protective Derek is and how he wants to take care of her.
If you absolutely love, love love a suspenseful book that has you on pins and needles throughout the book, then this book is for you. This book was truly a whirlwind and I loved every second of it. I’m just gonna say that this book is hands-down one of the most expensive books. I’ve read this year. Seriously people what are you waiting for? You won’t be disappointed in one bit.
Story - ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Spice - 🌶🌶.5 Narration - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Caring for Lucy is book #3 in the Heroes of Lone Star series. This might be my favorite story so far. Lucy is a nurse and comes from a family of uber-protective first responders. When she decides to divorce her emotionally and physically abusive husband (who no one likes), she keeps it all pretty quiet to hide her shame. Derek is a sexy EMT and is drawn to Lucy for reasons he can't explain. He soon learns that Lucy is being targeted and vows to protect her. Oh, the suspense in this story is riveting! And the chemistry between these two is fire! 🔥 Derek is so loving and understanding of how broken Lucy has become. I loved everything about this story. This is a standalone, but there is reference to the previous books, so beware of spoilers!
The narration was fantastic! Jack Callihan and June Deborahae are two of my favorite narrators, so I knew this was going to be spectacular. They didn't disappoint. 5/5 go-get-your-girl stars!!
This is book three in the Heroes of Lone Star series. Lucy is the oldest in her family of first responders. Lucy is spa nurse and married to a doctor. Sounds perfect right? Nope! Her husband is an abusive jerk that will not sign the divorce papers so they can part ways.
Derek is a paramedic that has been admiring Lucy from afar for years. He would never do anything to get between a married couple but when he found out that Lucy was getting divorced he realized that this could be his chance to get to know Lucy. When he posted that he was looking for a roommate through the medical community he was shocked when Lucy was standing on the other side of the door when he was meeting a potential roommate.
These two will go through some incredible things but can they find their way through till the end together?
I loved this book. The characters are awesome and the storyline has some crazy twists and it is extremely worth the read! I highly recommend this book.
I really enjoyed this! I went into this not knowing what to expect from a new to me author but the characters were fun and the plot was fast paced and interesting. Derek is quite swoon worthy and definitely deserves the book boyfriend title. I liked that he supported Lucy and how protective he was. Lucy was a strong character. I liked that she refused to be a victim and fought for her independence. Derek and Lucy together was very sweet. Although their relationship moved rather quickly, I still believed that they cared deeply for one another. I also think the couple of steamy scenes we got from them were good. The plot was interesting and fast paced. The climax was exciting and I couldn’t put the book down. The epilogue was the cherry on top of the story. Overall, reading this was a great experience and I am definitely going to read her backlist.
I loved the premise of this story - who doesn't love a protective MMC who also values the strength of the FMC? The narrators did an epic job breathing emotion into these characters. I would rate the narration 5 stars for sure. If I could, I would give the story 3.5 stars for that purpose. That being said, I did think it was a bit extreme how quickly the characters fell for each other. I also wish the FMC, Lucy, was a bit smarter when it came to her abusive ex. For her to go to see if he actually submit the paperwork for divorce on her own after clearly being terrified of him was just not a smart move and I felt like her character was written to be smarter than that - so that disappointed me. However, the way they wrote the ending scene was amazing and I could see it being difficult to figure out a way to get the character to that point in the story - you'll have to read it to know what I'm talking about!
Received as an ARC and leaving my honest review voluntarily. Note that the story deals with domestic abuse so may be a trigger to some. This was an emotional read to me and didn't shy away from the truth that the abused person usually hides the truth from everyone, loved ones especially, so it's really hard to know what's going on until things get out of hand. I was pulled into the story and the author did a great job depicting the hurt, anger, shame that Lucy felt and the recovery and strength that is needed and that she had, to find herself again. Loved the support and love that Derek showed and you could feel the connection the 2 had was beyond just the physical and was just perfect. The love from Lucy's family was so sweet too and I'm curious to read more so will be checking them out.
For me the book was okay, it is very plot driven which is fine. It was very short and simple to me almost a insta-love scenario. Our MMC Derek paramedic sees her (our FMC) Lucy on the job because she works as a nurse, but quickly backs away because he sees she's married, but then finds out that she is getting a divorce by his work partner. When he needs to find a roommate she is surprisingly the one to answer the ad. However, her husband does not plan to let her go so they must navigate there relationship and her messy divorce in order to be together. Personally I wish there was more spice but all around a good feel story. Can be read as a standalone however is book 3 in an interconnected story.
I had the opportunity to listen to this as an ALC and I'm so glad I did. June Deborahae is one of my favorite narrators and she was amazing in this! It was my first time hearing Jack Calihan and I will definitely be going back to listen to more of him!
This is the second book I've listened to in this series and I'm so invested! I love the tribute this series pays to first responders.
Dereck was so good for Lucy! He is exactly what she needed after everything she went through in her marriage. Hes constant and patient and so caring. And the way he helps her regain her slef esteem and self worth was beautiful.
Lucy was a great fmc. With trauma and insecurities like so many of us have. She was so relatable and I loved listening to the way June brought her to life.
A great book by Ms Baker that I enjoyed very much. Although this book dealt with domestic abuse I felt that Ms Baker handled it very delicately and the characters showed strength and their true selves whilst dealing with the abuse. Lucy and Derek have a natural attraction to each other and when they are brought together by circumstance they embark on a beautiful friendship and relationship but what a wild ride it is. I have become a huge fan of reading Ms Baker’s books and this was a very thought provoking book which had me hooked and I was totally caught up in the story and characters. Looking forward to reading more from Ms Baker.
I received an arc copy from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Caring for Lucy is the 3rd book in the Heroes of Lone star series by Elizabella Baker and so far my absolute favourite of the series. I loved this book. I loved the characters, Lucy was fantastic. She was sweet and strong. She was a great FMC. I’m not going to lie though the one who stole this book for me was Derek. Holy moly did I fall in love with Him, he was perfect. I couldn’t put the book down partly from wanting to know what was going to happen next and partly because I really couldn’t get enough of him. I enjoyed the story from start to finish and getting to see Lucy find herself again. If you’re looking for a sweet romance with some suspense and an absolutely swoon worthy hero ( I’m seriously in love with him) I would definitely give this one a read!
I was intrigued by the blurb and wanted to like this book, but unfortunately it was not for me. I appreciate that Elizabella touched on some tough topics, but I do think that they could have been written better. Abusive relationships have a lot of facets, but it's difficult to imagine that a woman in Lucy's situation would have kept everything from her family for so long, especially given how supportive they seem to be. She also moved on very quickly, despite the situation with her ex. Even in a difficult situation such as Lucy's, there would need to be some major healing done before jumping into another relationship.
Both narrators, June deBorahae and Jack Calihan, did a great job narrating. This story is heavy on the emotion and that was conveyed very well throughout.
Caring for Lucy is book 3 in the Heroes of Lone Star series. This was such a great book! Derek & Lucy have crossed paths at the hospital where she works but have never talked. Lucy is moving on with her life after leaving her abusive husband, and she isn't looking for a relationship. Derek is a sweet & caring paramedic. He's had a bit of a crush on Lucy for awhile. They become close after becoming roommates. They have such a strong connection and so much chemistry! Another great read from Elizabella Baker, full of romance and suspense. Leaving us with a bit of a taste of what's to come for Lucy's sister Alexa!!!
Caring for Lucy has got to be one of my favorites thus far. I couldn’t put this book down. The adrenaline I felt for Lucy while she was experiencing all that she was, was on steroids. She kept things hidden from her family and when the time came to start over, they didn’t get it! But she worked hard for that fresh start. She never anticipated meeting Derek though. But the man definitely made her feel things she never did or that she had forgotten. She felt safe with him. Derek saw Lucy from a far, but that was it. He could never act on his feelings for her. But when circumstances brought her to his door, that all changed. He made her see who she was and loved watching that confidence grow. And knowing he was the one to do that, really made him feel good. This book gives you so much! Excitement, anticipation, suspense, friendship and love. The Hero’s of the Lone star series is the bomb. They can be read separately, but to get the whole enchilada I recommend reading them all. Again, Lucy and Derek are so sweet and I just loved reading about them. I think you will too!
Wow so good and had it all. Lucy a nurse filed for divorce from her abusive husband but he wasn't letting go. So while trying to get her life back, she moves in with paramedic Derek. There is so much in this book and I absolutely loved it. Danger, drama, action, and intense moments along with the romance and a little steam. Had it all. I expressly liked the slow burn of the relationship as it all came about and the total contrasts between the marriage she had and the relationship she has now. So good and I'll certainly be looking out for more in the series. Fantastic book!!! This was an ARC and this is my honest review.
I would never support a victim not speaking up when they have a huge support system and caring family who loves them and would do anything for them. And quiet capable in this case. So her trying to be the bigger person was bullshit. She was just embarrassed that she endured all that cause her family taught better. So maybe at first I kinda understand why she was reluctant to say it but thn when shit started happening and everyone kept asking and asking and everyone treating her as the bad person....her response was it's ok they don't know the truth. And how would they girly? The romance was meh. Was that suspense? Ehh. Someone else's story please.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really enjoyed this one! Elizabella does an amazing job in talking about domestic abuse. It isn't always physical; emotional and mental abuse is still abuse. There was the right amount of tension between the main characters. I loved getting to see Lucy rebuild her identity and how Derek supports her the entire time! Elizabella, you got me with that twist at the end! I was not expecting that at all. There were some parts that felt repetitive, but still an amazing story!!
June DeBorahae and Jack Calihan did an amazing job in this dual narration! It takes a lot of talent to pull of this type of narration, and I think they both did fantastic.
I started reading this book a while back when it first came out, then got overwhelmed with life for a while. I picked it back up over the last week or two and finally finished it today. This book was amazing! A perfect combination of thriller, romance, and drama. It definitely kept me on my toes toward the end and was really hard to put down. Elizabella's books are all amazing and totally worth the read. I'm really excited to find out what's next in Arguing for Alexa!
