Hostile Makeover

Rate this book
Victoria Edward is a woman on a mission. She’s moved herself and her mentally deteriorating father across the country to buy a company on its last legs. And she’ll make damn sure it wasn’t the worst idea in the history of ever—no matter if the four geeks she’s now in charge of insist on working on beanbags, are permanently attached to their hoodies, or how often they go to elevenses…

Jace Adams sold half of his failing business to save the software they’d developed from disappearing under a load of debt. And he’s pretty sure it was a good idea even if the woman he sold it to is a bit…intense. It’s just that none of the other co-owners/software engineers/friends are as sure as he is and he’s not entirely sure Victoria can save them anyway. The only thing he’s sure of is that those scorpions on her high heels are not lying and that he has a heretofore unknown fascination with beautiful and dangerous women…

Megan Bryce

Megan Bryce sits in front of a computer all day making up stories for a living. Which means she is not nearly as interesting (as well as tall, svelte, and/or dressed) as her characters. She gets bored quickly and just can't be bothered with anyone in her head who doesn't make her laugh--which translates into fun books, outrageous situations, and witty characters.

She writes both contemporary and historical romance, and you can visit her website at www.meganbryce.com

I do like Megan Bryce's writing: her style is oblique & witty, her MCs fundamentally liberal and tolerant, and her backgrounds focussed. All those things are present and correct in Hostile Makeover, which I enjoyed a lot.

I did have a problem though with the central plot point: driven, businesslike Victoria needs Jace's laid-back team of coders to deliver a software programme to help people with Alzheimers. The conflict between pace and "peace, man" is generally a productive one—but only if things actually start changing. Here, though, the only real change I could detect at the end of the book is that one of Jace's team now works at a desk, rather than a bean-bag. Yes, Victoria has let her hair down a little, but that Alzheimers app seems as far off as it was at the beginning. Which rather gives the lie to Victoria's rumoured effectiveness, and paints Jace as a stoned slacker. (I exaggerate. But.)

Anyway, my moans apart, there is a lot to enjoy here, even if I would point anyone new to Megan Bryce to Some Like It Charming (CR) or To Wed The Widow (HR)—both on my Best Books Evah list.

Disappointing

I so enjoyed Megan's previous 2 Fashionista titles and was sure I'd enjoy this one too. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Dialogue between characters was difficult to follow, not always understanding who was speaking. The connection between the characters also seemed highly unlikely. Yes, people change through influences of the culture they're in, and yes, many times opposites attract. Even unlikely couples sometimes make it despite their differences, but I just couldn't get into this one.

Sad to not be giving a happier review.

very fun

Really great series. The male characters in all three books are my favorite males that I’ve read lately. All 3 are fun and funny and fun. The females are authentic and strong and quirky. Great series of books. Wish there were more so I can see how all the couples turn out.
