The Little Blue Door is the first book in a new chick lit, romance and family drama series by an incredible new author - Francesca Catlow. Set in the heart of Corfu we follow Melodie (Melo) who's taken a holiday there after the restrictions of covid and the loss of her grandparents during the pandemic. Melodie feels lost and adrift in her life and has returned to her favourite family holiday destination to find some comfort and rest. Melodie doesn't expect for her life to be turned even more upside down with family revelations, an unexpected romance and even more life choices to make whilst in her dream location. I loved Melodies character so much and adored Anton. He melted my heart and captured it and I was so happy with how the ending panned out. I'm reading book 2 as part of the book tour and can't wait to find out what will happen next. This is the perfect summer read and has me longing to revisit the beautiful island of Corfu.
This is a really beautiful and heartfelt story that takes place in the beautiful scenic place of Greece. Melodie has been raised by her grandparents who both pass on due to the pandemic. She decides to visit Greece to feel closer to them because it’s where they traveled together all the time.
While there, she bumps into Anton and his beautiful green-eyed daughter, Gaia, multiple times. Is it destiny? Throughout the island, Melodie sees this green-eyed beauty and she’s always staring at her. Finally, Anton sees Melodie once again and introduces himself as well as his daughter, explaining that he’s a widow for quite some time now. They become friends who become attracted to one another. Together they are intimate and travel throughout Greece sightseeing.
Gaia finally tells Melodie why she keeps staring at her; it’s because she’s so beautiful and there is another woman on the island who looks just like her. Melodie is surprised to hear this!
Could this be her mother who left her after she was born? It must be! Could she confront her mother to find out why she wasn’t wanted? Why her mother refused to ever see or know her daughter of 31 years? Who is her father? Did he even know Melodie ever existed? Why did her mother runaway? Why did her mother leave her own parents to never see them again? These are the questions Melodie wants to finally put an end to wondering.
I won’t tell you the whole story! You MUST read this beautiful story for yourself to find out these answers! Now onto book two!!
I've been keeping this book to read whilst on holiday in Corfu, and I can honestly say that reading it whilst surrounded by the beautiful Corfiot scenery, and the smells and the sounds really added to my enjoyment.
Set in Agios Stefanos, often referred to as San Stefanos, on the north west coast of the island, this is a setting that I know very well. We stay in nearby Arillas, a smaller, quieter resort, but both are beautiful and a true Greek experience.
The Little Blue Door is a tale of romance, with a touch of darkness and flashes of clever humour. The lead character, Melodie, is feeling lost and lonely after the long months of isolation due to the COVID pandemic, and the loss of her beloved grandparents to the virus. She was brought up by her grandparents after the sudden disappearance of her very young mother when she was just a child. For years, she has wondered just what she did that made her mother leave her like that.
Melodie and her grandparents spent many happy holidays in Agios Stefanos and she makes the decision to return, to try to recapture some of the happiness, to connect with the people that she considers to be her friends.
Catlow brings Agios Stefanos to life so very well, not least the absolute joyful welcome that Melodie receives when she arrives. Eveyone remembers her and her grandparents, and she is embraced as part of the community in true Greek style.
However, there's a young girl and her widowed father who Melodie has never met before. Gaia, the little girl stares at Melodie with a strange look, and her father Anton is quite mysterious. However, it's not that long before a relationship forms, and this is the romantic side of the story. When Gaia explains to Melodie why she couldn't help but stare at her, secrets from her past start to be exposed and Melodie discovers far more in Corfu than she could ever have imagined.
Well written, with an obvious passion for Corfu and the people who live there, this is a story that brought a smile to my face. I was rooting for Melodie and Anton, but wasn't prepared for how the story progressed at all, which was a welcome surprise.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this trilogy, returning to Corfu and catching up with the characters.
This was a gift from my Auntie, not my usual read but was enjoyable , would be a good holiday read. Enjoyed reading about all the places in San Stephanos, made me sad that we havent been able to visit for a while
This book was the perfect length for the story told within it but I am looking forward to the next instalment to follow Melodie’s story. As a long time visitor to Agios Stefanos it was wonderful to wander the streets and visit the tavernas and bars with Melodie and perhaps this won’t resonate quite as much with people who haven’t visited the resort but the story has enough behind it to still make for an absorbing read with less predictability than you might initially assume.
I’ve said it many times before, Greece is one of my favourite countries to visit and so I also love to read about it. I’ve visited Corfu many times so it brought me a lot of good memories and nostalgia being taken through the island. I found it to be an enjoyable read with lots of unexpected twists and turns, and unexpectedly sad at times. The development of Melodie and Anton’s relationship was lovely to read about, and Anton’s bond with his daughter was really heartwarming. I don’t necessarily think this will be a hugely memorable read for me, but it’s a great achievement from the author as a debut!
Absolutely loved this book. The beautiful old blue, traditional Greek door is what attracted me to the book. Set in one of my favourite locations. Nice mix of characters. The plot was nice. It played out well. The book itself was very well written. Shane I wasn’t in Corfu reading it.
Greece is a beautiful part of the world, and with the current global pandemic, my travel opportunities are currently limited to books, so I looked forward to visiting Corfu with Melodie. We discover that Melodie had visited the area many times with her grandparents, but this will be her first solo visit.
Being back in Corfu is bittersweet for Melodie, as she remembers happy times and has to share sad news with her Greek friends. However, her new friends Anton and Gaia help give her new ideas to think about.
This is not a light and romantic beach read because it deals with grief, teenage angst and coercive control. I enjoyed reading how Melodie developed her relationship with Anton, and loved the sound of his house.
Corfu was brought to life by Frances Catlow – the food, the people and the laid back lifestyle – the Greek Maybe Time. This is the first book in a series and I look forward to finding out what happens next for Melodie.
‘In the post-pandemic world Melodie feels lost and alone, desperate to find something to remind her of her previous life. She sets out on a trip to Corfu to reconnect with happier times, only to be haunted by memories and events from the past’
While there she meets the lovely Anton and his enigmatic daughter, who leads her to someone in her past who she never thought she’d see again.
I wouldn’t say this was your usual lighthearted summer romance but I enjoyed the slow burn of their relationship in such a gorgeous setting,
The start of the book had me feeling like that was me, I’m that person who’s avoided public transport and I’m that person that always gets stuck by a crying baby on a flight. Instantly had this connection straight away with Melodie.
For the first in a potential series knowing there will be a sequel has made me extremely excited. This was quite a short read so I finished wanting to know a bit more. I absolutely loved everything that unfolded in Corfu on top of the unexpected romance that takes place.
This most definitely was a great book to pick up if you feel like you need to take a new path in your life. Your in control of the direction your path goes. So be more like melodie. This book I found very inspiring a lot of adventures a lot of twists. This is a great summer read.
The writing flows, it’s not wordy which makes it a very easy read. The author does an epic job with building up the background to Melodie and does an even more epic job at making you fall in love with the characters.
Written by my lovely and long-time friend, this book was a rather emotional journey that I was not prepared for! I’ve been to Corfu once and whilst that doesn’t make me a know-it-all, I can happily say that she captured Corfu and it’s people so well. Granted I was only there for a handful of days, but it was so reminiscent and cosy.
It’s a very personal story, as well as being sweet and dreamy. The escapism is so refreshing and at times it feels like you’re there.
It’s just so care-free, I felt like I was on cloud nine for the majority of this book; apart from when Melodie was on the ground after falling over, again. Honestly take a shot every time she’s clumsy or Anton falls through the door! Loved it!
And now a little segue into Anton.
Charming, gentle and necessarily flirty. (So, Greek then?!) Melodie and his relationship was just so easy and ‘care-free’, from the surprise birthday drinks to skinny dipping- which I LOVED! Also, we stan father characters who are actually good dad's. Made me miss my old man!
The spice between them was built up so healthily done and it was written in such a classy manner. Plus, it was hot. (And adorably hilarious at parts!)
My only 'criticism' with this book was how we didn't see her friends very much, also Nico is a shit, but I'm sure I haven't seen the last of *them! (*The friends, hopefully Nico ends up in jail or something)
All in all, if you want a sweet little getaway of a book, that packs a surprisingly emotional punch (genuinely made me tear up), this is one for you. For a debut novel written during lockdown with a BABY (and toddler), I can’t wait to see what Frankie writes next as our world slowly begins to open up again. (Also, Frankie, I love how you and your family exist in you book, heart-warming easter egg.) 🧡
I read this all in one go last night, but I’m definitely going to read it again soon. I can't wait for the sequel!!
⚠️Trigger warning: Chapter 13 contains themes of sexual and verbal assault.

I love that this book is very current and related to now, and I also love that the pandemic isn’t mentioned too much. This book was a lovely escapism read that has very much made me want to jet off on a plane to somewhere with sunshine 🌞
Very likeable characters, Melodie was a strong and wonderful woman, she went through some very sad times but always seemed very strong regardless. The author did a fabulous job of the description to Melodie’s life and background. I felt like I really knew her. Anton, what a dream, the relationship that blossomed between him and Melodie was just so lovely and his bond with his daughter was so heartwarming, Gaia was such a fiery character, loved the chapters she appeared in.
It’s a fabulous debut from Francesca and to know that there will be a second book is SO exciting! I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I was so sad when I’d finished reading The Little Blue Door as I loved it so much! Perfect summer escapism with some heartbreak but lots of joy 🥰🌞
Totally not the genre I'd normally read, but I found myself really enjoying the book, keeping everything crossed for Melodie getting the happy ending & answers from her estranged mother. I wasn't expecting that ending though.
So vividly descriptive you could visualise yourself there...I need a holiday!
The perfect mix of characters & an original storyline made for an enjoyable read, perfect for a spot of beach reading 🏖️
Many thanks to @randomthingstours for allowing me to take part in the tour.
This was my first read by this author so it wasn’t really a surprise to me that it took a while for me to get into the flow and style of it. The style is simple and easy to follow, but I would definitely describe this is as a slow burner of a book. I liked the character of Melodie and my understanding of her, and sympathy for her, definitely grew as the book went on. She is an interesting and complex character, one who craves the security and familiarity of a close knit family environment, something that she missed out on to an extent as she’s never known her birth parents. She also talked about her job in the book which I think also gave me an understanding of her. She comes across as a worrier, an analyst, and an over-thinker, but she does start to relax into life on the island of Corfu and accept that “everything Corfu was bringing me was a surprise”. My favourite character was probably Gaia, who is described in the book as a “wise old teenage girl.” I always enjoy it when young people are well-presented and developed characters in ‘adult’ fiction books. For me personally, I felt the dramatic elements were all packed into the end and although this made for a gripping, twisty and unexpected ending, I think it may have helped to have some more development earlier on in the book, as I did struggle to get into this one for about the first third. That said, I’m glad I’m stuck with it as it delivers a beautiful message about what can happen when you open up and learn to trust and listen to others. Overall, this has been an easy and engaging read, focusing on strong themes involving love, family, identity and acceptance. I would recommend this book to fans of domestic drama and who like being transported to a different environment in the books they read, as I have enjoyed visiting the wonderful island of Corfu from my sofa in this story!
This is a story of contrasts. It is emotional, filled with knowledgeable descriptions and immerses the reader in life on Corfu. I've read many stories about this island, but the contemporary edge and originality make this a little different. It's Melodie's story of returning to Corfu in the aftermath of the global pandemic we are currently living through.
The warmth of her Greek friends, their way of life, and her memories allow her to heal and look to the future as she experiences a heartfelt journey of self-discovery. There is a slow-burn romance with themes of friendship and family drama.
It's an exploration of modern life with a vivid setting and well-crafted characters and relationships.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
As a lover of all things Greek, I was drawn to this book by the blurb and the gorgeous cover. Be prepared to be swept along to Corfu as Melodie tries to recall happier times. The themes of loss, death, family relationships lift this book above the average beach read yet will still appeal to fans who love a slow-burn romance as they are dealt with very sensitively.
The storyline starts of slow and culminates in a memorable twist that is worth waiting for. The characters are well-developed and I loved Anton's daughter who is particularly well portrayed as a minor character. This book is an amazing debut and I am grateful to have been able to escape to my beloved Greece for a few hours at least. I am really looking forward to the next in the series.
When Melodie embarks on a journey to Corfu in the attempt to remind her of happier times in her life, she has no idea how delving in to her past will evoke some rather difficult memories too.
Whilst she is traveling, Melodie meets an intriguing stranger who captures her attention entirely. Anton and his daughter play a huge role in her journey as they lead her towards someone from her past who she felt certain she would never meet again. Along with this revelation, she is constantly haunted by memories from her life here.
This is a truly unique story that captures you heart entirely from the moment you begin reading. The characters are vibrant and have many depths to their personalities which you slowly uncover as the story progresses. The dialogue between the characters is engaging and captivating and really adds some extra drive to this story.
With a wonderfully structured plot and a storyline that has you fully immersed to the very end, this was a fantastic read that I struggled to part with.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
The writing wasn't my style-- I would have loved for the beginning to have more tension and the dialogue to be a little less on-the-nose.
Overall, its a solid beach read with some more emotionally charged elements, twists and turns, and themes larger than just finding love which I appreciate. I also thought the story got stronger as it went on, in part because of the added tension, characterization, and editing.
Melodie is going on a trip to Corfu to help her regain perspective after the pandemic. Wearing a mask, she notices a girl at the airport with remarkable eyes, and it is a vision that remains with her. Arriving at a rented house she realises that the whole island reminds her of her beloved grandparents who have brought her up and have recently died. Reconnecting with those she knows from her frequent holidays on the island, she drinks, appreciates the never ending sunshine and explores the places she knows so well. It is when she meets the girl with the amazing eyes once more that her life view is changed, and she makes discoveries that she could never have foreseen.
This is a book told from the point of view of a young woman desperately trying to understand what she has gone through so far in life, and how she is to proceed in the future. The beauty of Corfu is vividly described as a backdrop to difficult events, but also the positive discovery of love in various forms. While the sights and smells remind Melodie of her grandparents, the atmosphere retains the hope which she is desperately longing for through the difficult months she has endured. She is honest in her narration, admitting when she feels that she has said or done the wrong thing. She talks about her clothes, her shoes, her drinking, but also about her feelings about going into a church, trying to hide in the sea. This is a novel written with great feeling for the place in which Melodie finds herself, its natural beauty and the welcoming nature of the people. Obviously the author knows and loves Corfu, and has used that knowledge as a context for a moving and well told story of a young woman. I was pleased to have the opportunity to read and review this rewarding book.
Melodie is fortunate that her work can be completed anywhere online, and so she can indulge in a holiday of several weeks in the resorts on Corfu. She realizes that there is no one who knows or is concerned about her, now that her grandparents have gone. She has always understood that her mother abandoned her at a few days old, and her father was not known. She has not had a romantic relationship for a few years, she knows that she has been able to live as a sort of “hermit” with her online work in social media. She meets old friends and makes new ones, especially her friend Maria and her introduction to Nico. When she encounters the girl once more she discovers that Gaia can provide introductions to more than one person who will become important, all within the setting of an idyllic island existence.
This is a carefully written and structured book with real insight into the contemporary lives of women. Melodie is a very vivid character who is honest about everything, including her consumption of ouzo and attraction to certain people. The place is beautifully described, as well as Melodie’s thoughts about her past. This is a sensitive book which I really enjoyed and found difficult to put down as I was so keen to see what the outcome would be for Melodie and others I recommend it for those who enjoy contemporary stories in holiday resort settings, written with real feelings and empathy.
Brilliant start to a series. Absolutely loved the setting and plot. So clear and the characters were brilliantly developed. At places I found the description so poetic.
Enjoyed seeing the relationship between Melodie and Anton. Loved the unexpected twist at the end and definitely an enjoyable read.
A lovely quick read for a holiday. Following the main character who has a lot of sadness and gets away to Greece for a break only to find love, friendship and a little bit more sadness about her past. Thankfully, she does find happiness by the end of the story and I've already downloaded the 2nd in the series.
Not bad, it's left me wanting to read the next one to see what happens but not the best I've ever read! I did find the writing left me confused sometimes as the scenes changed quickly without warning, so the story didn't flow so well. I will probably read the next one!
I was recommended this book by a friend and enjoyed it. I enjoy Greek holidays and found the story quite lively. Sad bits, happy bits, had it all. Would recommend.
I really enjoyed this book, it wasn’t the usual straightforward romance and had unexpected twists that I enjoyed. I understand there is going to be a sequel which I very much look forward to.
Stronger than the usual beech read with twists and turns that came together nicely at the end. A story of loss, grief and finding yourself...and all set on the beautiful island of Corfu.
Not your usual light summer read. Whether this enriches or sabotages the book is my main concern.
I went into this book expecting a fun, lighthearted read about falling in love on a Greek island - which I definitely got! Although it's still so weird seeing mentions of the pandemic in a recent text, it definitely helped situate our main character and her much-needed vacation to the familiar spot she used to visit each year with her grandparents. It was heartwarming to see her return to her place of tranquility, and the detailed descriptions did a great job of making the island feel like home. I enjoyed the gradual unveiling of her past, and her having close friends in Corfu was a very nice touch - I hope Maria shows up more in the future!
As far as the love interest goes, Anton is a perfect match for Melodie (even going beyond the countless mentions of he's so big i'm so tiny ). I did think they brought the best out of each other, and their interactions were funny, if surface-level at times.
Overall, I think I might have enjoyed the book better had it just been a summer romance, with the added complications of Anton trying to parent Gaia and introduce Melodie into their family, whilst Melodie just tries to make sense of her life after such a difficult period. There is great potential, with some truly heartwarming and funny moments (more interactions with the friends please!), and I am curious where the story goes next. I do think the series might benefit from some sensitivity reading, especially where Melodie's monologue and dialogue are so similar and she is clearly unfamiliar with sensitive issues - I'm sure she's meant to be more empathetic than she comes across! Despite everything, I did get attached to the characters, and I can only hope their lives get happier from here on out!
