Thoroughly excellent!

Had been meaning to give a more thorough review of this for the sake of those browsing.
I have had this recommended a number of times now and honestly, somewhat snubbed it because of the poor presentation choices on the front cover of the first edition. Just goes to show you cannot judge a book by its cover!

This book has significantly impacted my approach in a number of ways but not in increasing a misplaced zeal as many might assume with a young father reading such a book. No, instead it has deepened my understanding of the comprehensive task it is to bring up a child in the fear and admonition of the Lord, that is, the Paidea and Nouthesia of the Lord. It did this exegetically in a number of ways that I really appreciated and although brief (as this is certainly more on the practical end of these books), I am mindful of a few key principles as a result.

Whilst it was exceedingly helpful on a practical level, I would say that more than anything else I was left very challenged by the reminder of how momentous a task it is to raise or train our children properly. And moreover, the ultimate goal is always to be a witness to them in seeking to win them for Christ and to grow up to love God and others. What a noble and terrifying task to be impressed upon all parents. I was challenged too on the basis for all child training being an outflow of the gospel in our lives. Thus all the practical wisdom given in this book should boil down to 'when we properly love out children, God is glorified and our families reap great blessings.' Additionally, is not a reverent fear of the Lord the beginning of wisdom? And so that attitude is to be reflected in all serious endeavours like these.

Indeed, it left me feeling overwhelmed at times as to how much ought to be done properly and how much will be lost if not. However, it is solid in its reminders to trust in the Lord for His grace and wisdom in our child training endeavours and to seek forgiveness where we have, do and will make mistakes.

Certainly a recommendation for all parents and one I will include in pre-school (Prior to schooling) curriculum recommendations in the years to come (I was prompted to finally read it after seeing it in a curriculum list by a certain classical christian school in Utah, cheers KL!)

Very helpful book. A child that is trained in virtue is a delight to everyone around them. Bradley didn't say this outright, but it seems to me that training a child requires training the parent. Either the child trains the parent to bend to the child's will, and the house is ruled by a toddler, or the parent trains themselves to be virtuous adults who lovingly chastise and correct their child. I have gone to bed at night many times, absolutely dreading the next day, because I had allowed my toddler to make all the decisions and boss me around. Lazy parenting is the reason society views children as a net negative. Well-trained children who are trained from the heart (not externally trained with a rebellious heart) are truly a blessing from the Lord.

This has been the most practical and applicable children’s book I have read thus far. It is straight to the point and unpacks a lot of laziness that I have seen in my responses to parenting thus far in my early journey. Highly recommend this book, and use the sections within it to carve your heart to look at why you respond in certain ways you do. As well as, see the effects those responses have upon your spouse and children. Very eye opening and conventional read. It is our duty to bring up our children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Let us not waiver in this responsibility that the Lord has bestowed upon us.
