The Letter Carrier

Rate this book
A WWII coming-of age story based on three years of interviews with Michelle Naget, whose family members spent four years as captives in their own home after it was commandeered by the Nazis.

When the German march across Europe reaches France, young Michelle Naget and her family join the throngs fleeing for safety. But their flight ends in capture by the Nazis, with one member of the family taken, while the rest of the family is sent back to their village of Braquis, France, to serve the enemy who has commandeered their home.

For the next four years, the Nagets live in the crosshairs of the enemy living under their roof and of the neighbors who question the family's loyalties. Every day becomes a test of faith for Michelle-in God, in family, in the hope that the Allies will come, and in the letters from a young French rebel named Légère who promises Michelle that she will be free again.

But when the Nazis' torment increases, and the razor-thin line between life and death narrows for the Nagets, the family's motto, "We do what must be done," and Michelle's faith in God, give her the courage to face her enemy and do whatever she must to protect the family she loves.

Many books "based on actual events" end up reading like a bad memoir. I was a bit nervous about it, but nope! This book stands out. We are given the best and worst of the French occupation without being given more than we're ready for until we've been prepared--sort of like the Lord does with the rough parts of our life.

I cared about Michelle from page one, and as the story unfolded, even characters I wanted to smack for stupidity and rashness became important as well.

In the end, what you have is a wonderful story of family, coming of age in wartime, and God's provision and providence even in a world that feels as if He's abandoned it.

I don't think I have the words to express how I feel about this book. The author spent three years talking with Michelle Naget, learning of her incredible story and having Michelle's daughter help translate Michelle's memories and various French documents. It's an incredibly touching story of what one family endured for 4 years while Nazi soldiers lived in their home and controlled their small village.

Michelle was not quite 12 years old when the Germany army invaded her small village and changed her simple, often carefree life to one of fear and oppression. She and her family suffer many hardships and had several close calls during the Nazi occupation but she never lost her faith in God which I found amazing. The Naget family motto "We do what must be done" served them well during this harrowing time in their lives.

This story had my full attention the entirety of the book. I especially liked that we got to see what was happening in each of the family member's lives, not just Michelle's. It's a very realistic portrait of war without profanity or explicit scenes. I can't begin to imagine the fear and other emotions this family experienced but we get a taste of it in Michelle's story.

This is one of the best books of 2022 and I can't recommend it enough. I was fortunate to be a BETA reader for this amazing story, but I also bought an ebook for my personal library. All thoughts expressed in this review are my own.

I am the letter carriers daughter.

This book is a part of my mother's history. Laurie Lewis did a spectacular job in interviewing my mom, researching, and bringing the story to book form. I heard these stories from my mom all my life. Laurie did an excellent job in keeping the book quite factual. I believe God's timing was perfect.

Laurie, you did a great job.

My prayer is that everyone who reads this book will be blessed. God is good.

This is a coming-of-age tale in the most harrowing sense. Oft times, the journey from childhood to the beginnings of adulthood is full of pitfalls. Try taking this journey while living in Occupied France in World War 2.

This poignant book really conveys how faith can be a power to carry someone through soul-shattering experiences. Michelle is more than just an incredible lead, she was a real person. Her story echoes the truth of that time.

The stark and accurate portrayal of all aspects of the Holocaust is brilliantly done. This key aspect of history is no longer taught as it should be. This book should be mandatory reading for every student in grade 10.

If this was just a fiction tale, then I would give kudos for the accurate portrayal of the events of World War 2. That this story is largely built on the true story of little Mimi Naget is remarkable. The emotions that the words convey were emotions felt by a girl in the 1940s.

A strong book that illustrates the power of faith without being overtly preaching. The historical storyline is accurately presented. A powerful book that should be required reading in all schools going forward into the 23rd century. The messages in this book should not be lost to history.

Disclaimer: I received a copy from the author in the hopes I'd review it. My thoughts are all my own.

The Letter Carrier is a riveting historical fiction tale which takes place in the small, atmospheric village of France, called Braquis, during the Nazi occupation of World War II. It is based on true events in the life of Michelle Naget, whom the author interviewed extensively for a period of three years in order to tell Michelle's heroic story. The Letter Carrier has heavy themes of faith, family, and courage despite horrifying odds.

It's a coming of age story of a young girl named Michelle, who despite heartbreak, hardship, and unbelievable situations during a 4 year long Nazi occupation of her family home, grows into a very brave, confident young woman. Family and God are equally important to Michelle, as well as her siblings and parents. Her relationships with her mother, father, 4 brothers, and God helped her through so many terrifying, dangerous moments while the Nazi soldiers invading her home and village were in control of her own life and death.

The Naget family motto was "We do what must be done." This very sentiment provides a strong lesson for anyone struggling or facing great odds, even in today's world, as well. The story is well-written, intriguing, and hard to put down. It is filled with historical facts of this time period, French culture and custom, as well as courageous characters, namely young Michelle Naget and her family members.

Fans of Kate Quinn and Kristina McMorris will enjoy this captivating story.

Sometimes you get to read a book that really touches you in some way or another. This one by Laurie Lewis is one of those for me.

Sometimes World War II books can be hard to read. There were so many things that happened during that time period to the people that are just hard. And this author did a good job of showing that hard things happened. But she also did a good job of showing that there was still hope, even when things were hard.

The Letter Carrier is based on the true story of Michelle Naget, or Mimie. Michelle’s family lived in France. And their country and home were invaded by the Nazi’s. I loved Michelle’s faith. Even in the darkest of times, she believed that God knew her and knew of her. And that he would help her when needed. And he did. Miraculous things happened to the Naget family. But they still had to learn many hard lessons.

I loved this book! I feel like I gained a greater understanding about what life would have been like for people who were occupied during the war. And there are great lessons to be learned from those who suffered.

I was sent an e-copy of The Letter Carrier as a gift from the author. All opinions are my own.

“The Nazi’s took her country, her village, and her home, but Michelle Naget discovers that freedom begins in one’s heart.”

The Letter Carrier by Laurie L.C. Lewis is a superb coming of age story set in France during WWII. What sets this story apart from others is not only Ms. Lewis’s wonderful writing and storytelling talent, but also the fact that this is a true story.
This historical story tells of a young girls experience to survive and also trying to keep her family safe- with all the dramatic details we read of family, war, faith, courage, heartache, friendship, culture, challenges, and struggles- all while giving us a window into life in those times.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Laurie L.C. Lewis!

The Letter Carrier is a riveting historical fiction novel that I read in about 24 hours. I honestly couldn't read fast enough. This World War II novel is from an aspect I haven't read about before. It takes place in a farming village in France as the Germans begin to invade France. The author spent three years interviewing Michelle Naget whose family was at the mercy of the Nazis for four years during WWII. The Letter Carrier novel is based on the Naget family's life. They endured so many horrifying and intimidating moments while the Nazis took over their home and village.

I was so impressed with Michelle and her family and how they had the strength to endure and their faith in God to help them. I loved the family motto that Michelle's mother taught them, "We do what must be done." This is what they did each and every day

This story is told so well with accurate historical details, while showing the horror of war without being graphic. There is never a lull in this book and you are compelled to keep reading. There are so many things you feel as you read: the love this family has for each other, their loyalty to family and country, and great fortitude that most people could never muster in our current time.

I highly recommend The Letter Carrier to those looking for a solid and well-written story about France during WWII. Michelle's story needed to be told, and L.C. Lewis did a fabulous 5-Star job in delivering the messages that I'm sure stayed always in Michelle Naget's heart.

"My name is Michelle Naget Rogers. I came here today to tell you a story. My story. A story I tell because I don't want it to ever be your story."

The Letter Carrier by L.C. Lewis is the story of Michelle Naget who was a French girl of only eleven years old when Nazi Germany invaded France. The Nazis not only took her country and village of Braquis but also her home where she and her family had to serve them. Told through the perspective of Michelle, the next four years describe her life through the occupation and how she survived.

I absolutely flew through this book and could hardly put my e-reader down. Every spare moment I had I needed to read in this book, even if it was only for a couple of chapters. I was both fascinated and horrified at everything Michelle and her family went through while their home was taken over by the Nazis. I can't even imagine how scary that must've been like but that's why these stories need to be continued being told, especially today.

The author's writing was also really good. It really hooked me into the story and honestly never let me go. I enjoyed seeing Michelle growing up, although she had to grow up faster than would normally be the case. At one point she had to be a mail carrier and by doing that job she saw and heard a lot of horrible things as well. She dressed herself to look like a boy as much as she could for obvious reasons. She was such a courageous girl and her story was told in a well-written and realistic way. I'd highly recommend this book!

"If truth is the first casualty of war, then surely childhood and innocence are close behind."

This is a fascinating book. It is a first-hand account of life in France from the occupation of France by the Nazis through to D-Day and the long-awaited liberation by the Allies that brought the European Theater portion of World War II to an end. It is told from the perspective of a French girl whose family home is used to garrison the occupying soldiers and SS personnel. (I'll highlight the themes of the book without giving away the details of the plot.) She describes the fright her family feels when they are ordered to occupy a small portion of the house so they can serve the enemy soldiers by cooking them meals, washing/mending their clothes, cleaning up after them, etc.. The danger to a young woman just entering her teen years and the family's reliance on God's protection was well-illustrated. The sense of utter helplessness to resist the Nazis' dominance was well documented as was the danger courted by the family when the men used their skills to manufacture weapons for the Resistance right under the noses of the German soldiers. I highly recommend this book. I read an ARC of this book but I was not required to write a review. This is the exact same review I would have written if I had purchased the book.

I really enjoyed this book. I have read many WWII books about the deplorable treatment of the Jews. But lately I have read more about the people that had to live in their own invaded countries. I had not previously considered the stories of all that lived through that horror. I’m grateful to learn more of their trials and survival.
As far as my review of the book, I thought the pace of the story was very good. I never felt a lull or disinterested point. It read as though watching a movie of Mimie’s life. The characters were very believable and well researched. I’m grateful that even with the horrors these people endured, the author chose to keep it free from crass language, violent war scenes and inappropriate advances. Which I’m sure was part of their daily lives. Their faith was a big part of their hope and survival. The story is intense, intriguing, heartbreaking and heartwarming. I was enthralled from beginning to end!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Laurie L.C. Lewis is one writer that brings out all the feels in her work. The Letter Carrier is an historical fiction tale based on true events. It is raw, horrifying, compelling and sad story. It is set back in time when the Nazi invaded France and World War II. A time when you never knew if you would live or die by the hands of someone else. It reached into my heart and left me battered and bruised.

Michelle Naget a young French girl lived through Nazi Germany invading France and her village Braquis. The atrocities she and her family saw as they were made to serve the Nazi’s. This is her story as she endured many things no one should have to for four years.

A brilliant story that stays with you.

This was a gripping historical novel based on the real life experiences of Michelle Naget and her family. I found this story to be a real page turner, which at times was heartwarming and at others heartbreaking. An inspirational story about an amazingly brave young women, I found this book hard to put down. A young Michelle and her family are fleeing to safety from the Germans who have marched across Europe and have now reached France, when they are captured by the Nazis. The Naget family are sent back to their house in the village of Braquis, to discover their home has been commandeered, and that they must serve the enemy. For four years the family live with the Nazis under their roof and have to endure not only this, but also their neighbours questioning their loyalty. Michelle and her family are very religious but the daily hardships test their faith, however, the family’s motto is , “We do what must be done,” and they do, by believing in God, each other and hope.
A young rebel French girl passes letters to Michelle and Légère promises that she will be free again when the Allies arrive. As time goes on the Nazis torment increases and the Naget family’s life and death is completely in their enemies control. Michelle is determined to do whatever she can to protect her family, even dressing as a boy and being a letter carrier. Told from Michelle’s point of view this is an engaging read and I felt completely immersed in the story. The setting came vividly and claustrophobically to life from the authors descriptive narrative. The characters are all realistic and well defined, Michelle is a very likeable and relatable young women. The author has obviously done her research, and the added historical details made me feel as though I had been transported back, during WWII. I literally could not put this book down, and the story and the characters stayed with me long after I had finished the book. A must read, which I definitely recommend.

This novel was thrilling to say the least. The realism it did, was by far one of the best I would say. I felt I was transported to the time of the war and was undergoing what the characters endured. It takes a special author to really make the reader feel something that deep. Truly an amazing read.

Personally, I loved this book was told through the eyes of Michelle. As a child enduing all the stuff happening with the Nazis etc. you really feel what the child was feeling. As an adult it was terrifying enough, but what was it to the child? The story was a epic read. I could not stop reading, as I constantly needed to know what would happen next. The book had a lot of emotions, and you really felt what the family that the story emphasized on was going through beautiful writing and read. I have not read anything wit such a impact in such a while. This is a book that will stay with me. Loved it!

If you had not had the pleasure of reading this book, I suggest very much that you do so! This is not one to be passed up for any means A super high recommendation from me, and a must-read author as well.

This was a great read! It was emotional and inspiring. Finding out everything was based off of real experiences just made it more impactful. I'm very glad I picked this book up. I think this is a book everyone should read. One thing I enjoyed is the different perspective. A lot of World War Two memoirs and stories focus on the jews and this one was focused on France. Which was a different take than what I'm used to and I'm grateful for because sometimes it is easy to forget that other people were just as impacted by the war, just in different ways. Kudos to the author for this riveting tale. I can't wait to read more from her in the future!

The Letter Carrier is a historical fiction novel about a young lady named Michelle Naget that lives in France during World War II while their country and home are invaded by Nazi’s. This is a touching and informative coming-of-age story. Reading about Michelle’s unwavering hope for better times and strong faith in God is inspirational. The faith of the Naget family was definitely rewarded. Reading about the hardships of living in an occupied country during World War II was heartbreaking. There was a lot to be learned regarding the experiences of these people.

Powerful WWII Rural France Memoir
This is a powerful story! It is the fictionalized memoir of a real woman who was but a child during the horrors of WWII. Living in semi-rural France, she did not experience the same horrors as city dwellers, but life was still extreme. Survival was extreme. This story soaks into your bones as you imagine being barely a teen and having Nazi soldiers living in your home, eating all your food. Worse, she was chosen to be the mail carrier to a small group of towns. By dressing as a boy, she was able to avoid many problems, but she saw so many atrocities! This is her real story from her own memories as shared with the author. The fictionalization comes in only to make the story more fluid. Some real persons have become one character for the story. Something may have happened in the next village but in the story, it happened in this village and not that one. As we have lost most of the survivors of that war, it is so important to remember their stories. In this novel, the author makes the reader feel all of the emotions of the victims.

This was such a sweet story of a French family caught in the crosshairs of WWII. The stories and lessons this young girl (Michelle) shared are poignant for us today. Many tears were shed by me as I read her story and what she went through. We must never forget the history of our past so we don't repeat the atrocities that have happened. We must listen to those who have gone before us so that we can glean a part of their wisdom and continue to make this world a better place. Thank you Laurie C Lewis for a brilliant story to remind us of these lessons.

I LOVE historical fiction and actively seek to read all the stories I can about WWII. Most deal directly with Germany and viewpoints from those imprisoned in concentration camps. Every once in a while, you find one about another occupied country, written about someone who lived through it. These books are transfixing, heartbreaking, and full of hope all at the same time. The thing is, many countries (Italy and France particularly) were victims of destroyed documents. Those stories that can be corroborated after much deep digging - often are hard to tell and we are very quickly losing the remaining people who can tell the tale. So, when something like this comes along it is brilliant and brave and wrecking, and touching.

The Letter Carrier is nothing short of all of this. It takes place in occupied France during the war and is a true testament to the depravity wrought by the Third Reich and living conditions of those involved. The author does a tremendous job of transporting you to Braquis - bringing sharp focus to the unthinkable things no one should have to live through, and capturing part of your heart in return. I wept for Michelle and her family more than once, but through faith and hope, they lived to tell the tale. Hopefully this serves as a reminder how fragile life is, and brings light to dark times lest we fail to learn from and tragically repeat these lessons.

L.C. Lewis is a poignant writer with a knack for carrying the emotions through the page. I felt what the characters were feeling. I got a sense of an oft skipped over perspective of the war and how truly young kids had to grow up faster than they should have. I am forever grateful to L.C. for capturing the spirit of Michelle, and being able to tell her tale. Brava!

I’ve read several books by super-talented author Laurie Lewis, and her latest has become one of my top favorites. Because I’m such a fan, I downloaded the book without even reading the blurb.

Once again, I found myself back in WWII, with a tiny heroine as my guide. She took me through the dramatic change that swept through France during the height of Hitler and Mussolini’s reign of terror.

I was immediately drawn into Michelle Naget’s story, not knowing at the time that it was based on the protagonist’s firsthand experiences. I didn’t realize that until the end of the book, which made the story even more powerful for me.

The writing and the story itself vibrantly bring to life what it was like for the Naget family before the war came to their doorstep. The narrative places the reader in their home, with tiny Michelle sharing her passions and her strength and the convictions of her ever-growing family.

Because Michelle’s father was the blacksmith, and because they had one of the nicest homes in the village, the Nazi’s seized the property and kept the family on as their domestic staff. Weeks turned into years, and each day was fraught with tension.

Through it all, the family did their best to hold themselves together, serving the men they loathed and feared.

I found everything about this enthralling story perfect down to the finest details. The author grasped the incredible tale as it was told to her firsthand, and deftly presented it with the souls of the people who actually lived through these soul-testing events.

I really enjoyed this story. It was inspiring as much as it was heartbreaking. The things Michelle and her family went through was unimaginable and truly makes you grateful for the safe life most of us have today. I love how it is based on a true story and the author has done an amazing job with the research which truly makes this story an deep insight into that time.

We are transported into WWII, when Nazi Germany was invading many countries and what affect that on the people living in those areas.

When they take over and capture Michelle and her family they are forced to serve the Nazi in their own home. The family are forced to indure physical, mental and emotional trauma, never knowing if they were going to survive or not.
One thing that comes out of this story is hope. Michelle never let's go of her faith and the hope that one day she would be free. During this story we see her blossom through all the bad times to become a strong and inspirational woman with a story to tell. A story which will make anyone stop and think and admire the courage of the people that survived that time

I have deep respect for books which are centered around World War II. They bring out the pain and trauma faced by the people during one of the most horrific times on this planet.
This book is a coming of age story of a young girl Michelle, except this does not involve any dates, fashion dresses or admiring eyes. This is a story of a young girl whose family had to endure Nazi soldiers in their home for 4 years. The Letter Carrier is based on the true life of Michelle Naget whose family lived in France, when the Nazis invaded their country and took over their homeland for 4 years.
They prayed everyday that the Allies will come rescue them, there is still hope and light at the end of the tunnel. Their unwavering faith in God and the family motto “We do what must be done” helped Michelle sail through those difficult times.
The author has done extensive research about Michelle’s life , she spent three years with the lady herself to understand the facts and her life better and pen it down on paper.
Huge respects to the author, Michelle and everyone who survived those terrible times during WW II.

This is based on the real life experiences as seen through the eyes of Michelle Naget. Ms. Lewis did a through job in interviewing Michelle for the details in this book. The story started with the attacks by Germany on France during the second World War. The Naget family first has to flee their home. When they return a few days later, nothing will ever be the same. The Germans began controlling not only the small village of Braquis, where the Michelle's family live, but even invade their home. Michelle's step-father (Father) works in his tool shop. Mother teaches Michelle various domestic duties as they are made to serve the different German military officers that have dominated their home throughout the war. Eventually Michelle also must take on the duties of the village's PTT (which is basically like a mail carrier). Through all the horrors of war, Michelle does the best she can as she tries to survive all the tragedies she had to witness every day. This story was both heartbreaking and captivating.

The Letter Carrier

The Letter Carrier by L.C. Lewis tells the true story of the Naget family during the Nazi occupation of France at the time of WW2. Through the eyes of Michelle Naget, who was only a child at the time, the true horrors of the war are revealed. From the family’s attempt to flee France, to the Naget’s being captured by the Nazi’s, even being separated form one another, this outstanding novel will have you gripping the pages needing to know how Michelle, Mimie, survived.
I cannot say enough about this book. It is beautifully written and from page one this true story grabbed onto my emotions and wouldn't let go. I admit I read some of L.C. Lewis's words or Michelle’s memories through tears. I could feel Mimie's fear of the unknown and almost hear the bullets raining down on them from the planes. The strength of the Naget clan is so unimaginable and filled me with such faith and hope. You can really feel the raw truth of what the war was like in France and it really made me reflect on a lot of things in my life and cherish them even more. This is not a book I will soon be forgetting! A must read!

The Letter Carrier by L.C. Lewis is a masterfully written piece of historical fiction. The fact that the author took so much time to capture these intricate details shines through from the very first page. Although this is a fictional story, she is clearly passionate about her writing and story being precise to reflect the time. Her writing and descriptions provided me a clear view of what it was like for Michelle and her family living in their home while it was occupied by the German soldiers during World War II, and having to tiptoe around to keep many secrets hidden from the Nazi’s. Many emotions flooded me throughout my time reading it, and even now I catch myself still reflecting upon it. I’d like to say thank you to the author for taking some much time and care transcribing this beautiful story. I will most certainly recommend to my historical fan friends and keep an eye out for more books by her.

The Letter Carrier by L.C. Lewis. I really enjoyed this book. I'm on a WWII kick so I was excited to read this one and it did not disappoint. The story is told thru the eyes of 11 year old Michelle Naget who is French and lives in the village of Braquis. The Nazi's took everything from her family including her home. Her family had to serve the Nazi's in their own home. I have learned so much reading these books about WWII and how horrible the Nazi's treated everyone. Michelle never knew if they were going to have food to eat, water to drink or even if certain family was still alive. The abuse, emotional, physical and mentally is almost too much to bear but she survives. Holding onto her faith Michelle endures it all and comes out a very strong woman. The author writes in a way that I truly felt like I was in war torn France. I flew thru this book as quick as I could read!

I loved reading this historical story. This is an author that I have loved reading from the first book I picked up. I never hesitate to pick up her books for sure. This is a well written story where the author's writing skills make the story come to life. Her attention to details made her stories realistic. This book is no different. This is a story that takes place during a time when the Germans reach France. This is a story that is written with a lot of heart and the characters emotional. A story of courage and the determination to protect a family. I enjoyed the characters and what they brought to the story. They are connectable and made the story easy and hard to put down. There is great growth of the characters and the plot throughout the story that made it entertaining. A must read story. I highly recommend this book and this author.
