Werewolves, vampires, and other preternatural creatures have been living in relative peace with humanity for the past twenty-six years. There are other monsters that humanity doesn’t know of, but it’s best kept that way.
Valkyrie Dalton is one of these monsters. As a hellhound for Cerberus, she marks souls for the Greek underworld. When she’s not gifting people with the ‘kiss of death’, or drinking away her problems, she’s solving cases as a detective for the Las Vegas Preternatural Crime Unit. After all, it takes a monster to catch one.
When headless, heartless bodies start appearing, Val’s forced to get close to her new partner, Jack Khoury. He’s blunt, forward, and way too hot for his own good. As they spend more time together, the mental walls she carefully built start to crumble.
Fighting her attraction to Jack, Val tries to focus on the case. However, as more bodies appear, she’s soon introduced to a whole other underworld.
Ally Wagner lives in Southern California with her husband and nope-rope. She's an avid reader and, much to her husband's dismay, a collector of books. If she's not reading in her spare time, you can find her either cosplaying, playing video games, or writing down what her characters tell her to.
I refuse to let the first read of my 2023 be a DNF, so let's pretend it's still December 31 and call it a day.
Marked isn't a bad book, but I'm not a fan of the writing and I made it till 31% and then gave up on the main character. I'm also so tired of books where the author describes everything a character does and wears.
"Raise your voice to her again," Jack warns, voice so deep and low it makes a shiver run down my spine, "and you´ll wish you hadn´t."
This is a one POV book, told by the POV of Valkyrie.
What I liked about Val(kyrie) was her snarkiness and how open and direct she was with people. Although it sometimes came across as being a bit bitchy sometimes, I liked that she stayed true to herself and wasn´t trying to be a people pleaser. Now Jack Khoury. That man seriously needs to stop being so sexy. You can´t be a police officer, an alpha, tall and fit and handsome, dominant and respectful and understanding at the same time. I don´t know if I am the biggest fan of the insta lust in here, also their constant arguments got a bit tiresome for me after a while. It´s not even really miscommunication, they just talk over each other and not really listen and she doesn´t let him talk.
Regarding side characters my absolute favorite was Taylor. She is such a good friend to Val, and if there were tropes for friendship then she definitely is the sunshine to Val´s grumpy. I liked Val´s relationship with Scott and the banter they had. I only wish that Scott would´ve gotten a bit more of a backstory as well and that his character would´ve gotten a bit of depth, but maybe we will see that happen in the next book.
I liked the murder mystery aspect to this book, although I have to say the reveal of the murderer didn´t feel like the biggest plot twist ever or all that surprising. The mystery about all the (really gruesome) killings felt so hyped up that the reveal fell a bit flat for me. I really loved the mythology aspects in this book, especially how different mythologies got merged together and it most definitely made for an interesting world building. The romance definitely was the main plot here, the smut scenes were really good and I enjoyed the romance overall; but sometimes I actually wished for the murder mystery or the world building to be a bit more in the focus.
Overall it was a really good read in a really interesting setting and I can´t wait to dive into book 2. Because that ending really needs more explaining!
trigger warnings: gore and gruesome murders, mentions of bullying, mentions of child abduction, mentions of pedophilia, alcoholism, mentions of suicide, trauma, kidnapping
⚜𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄⚜ So turns out this is a first in a serie and not a standalone. Which explains why that last very important loose end was not taken care of here, and who that prologue was actually about. 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐣𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐝, so I'm giving back my original rating of 3.5 stars rounded up. I still wished we had the last chapter from Jack's 𝐏𝐎𝐕, but it no longer feels like i was robbed of a proper conclusion. Especially since my girl Valkyrie deserved better than this. So now that we cleared that up, what you should expect reading this is. 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐦𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝, 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠/𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭, 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐌𝐂, 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐣𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐬, 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐱𝐲, 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐦𝐮𝐭. This book was so fun! It was well paced, short and had a great plot mixed with amazing spice.
I really enjoyed the uniqueness of this book. It was an urban fantasy taking place in Las Vegas in a world where monsters and humans live together. But it beautifully wove in a mix of Egyptian and Greek mythology which was so cool!
There was an element of mystery in this book where our FMC and tall, dark and handsome MMC are trying to hunt down a serial killer and although you can guess who that person is early on, it still had a great twist!
Nice and funny writing style. Strong MC, very interesting story.
Different from anything I’ve read before, this is a mix of… mythological, urban fantasy and crime novels. Unexpected and well carried on. Is the first of what I think may be a series, taking into account the open finish.
Marked is an Urban Paranormal Romance. The FMC is a detective on a paranormal police force. Her current assignment is to track down a murderer (for the force and the underworld).
ALSO her new partner is tall, dark, and handsome. This story has both Greek and Egyptian mythology and was such a fun and unique read!
I was an advanced reader for this book, and I have to say its one of my most anticipated purchases when it comes out. I cannot wait to have a physical copy on my shelves, ready to be re-read.
Marked is set in the same universe as Skin and Shift, but takes place following a new character, Val. It expands and explores new components of her urban fantasy world. It's fast, fun, violent and steamy. I enjoyed myself the entire time.
Val -our main character- is brash, bold, coarse and troubled. Shes dealing with extended trauma, a high-stress line of work, a pushy friend-with-benefits, in addition to being a 'monster' in human society. I love her to bits, flaws and all.
I made two mistakes with this book. My first mistake was letting it sit unread on my shelf for months. The second mistake was thinking I could start it in the evening and be able to go to sleep. This story had me in its clutches from the moment I dove in and wholeheartedly consumed me until around 3:45 in the morning the next day. I quite literally could not put it down! I don’t know the last time I fought sleep so hard to read a book.
This is a new series starter. It’s paranormal / dark fantasy romance (definitely 18+ check CWs). It’s left on a mild cliffhanger, but in my opinion, the integral pieces for this first book were well concluded by the time you reach the end. Of course it leaves you wanting more, but that’s the fun in a series.
Valkyrie (Val) and Jack were both great characters! The banter was fantastic. There’s a lot of angst and turmoil to get through to reach the end and it kept me at the edge.
Highlights:
Intriguing lore and plot with Greek and Egyptian mythology. An enticing mystery involving a paranormal police force. The FMC is a hellhound for Cerberus while also being an officer of this paranormal special unit. The MMC is her new partner and they have to work together to find a serial killer.
This is my first book by this author, so it took a little bit for me to get into the book but once I did I was hooked. I love a flawed main character, the inclusion of several mythologies was fantastic and the spice was perfection.
Maaaan. Was this a hard book to get through for me. Normally, I can get through a good book within a couple of days. (2-4 depending on work, etc). However, this book made me put it down multiple times in a day. Not because I was busy... just because...it's not that great.
Ps. I'm not sure how the other books are by this author. This is the first of her books I have read.
I was interested in reading this book because 1.) The cover is nice. I love the feel of the book. 2.) Overall plot summary is exactly what I'm into.. Preternatural creatures, mystery, a romantic subplot...etc. That sounds good to me. However, within the first few pages of the book, I fell asleep. The overall writing style of this book did not keep me encapsulated in the story. There were several weird/odd wordings in sentences that seemed like errors. For instance, pg. 121 "His kisses down my sternum towards my bra." The sentence reads like HIS should be HE. Unfortunately for me, this would take me out of the story and focus on grammar or flow of the sentence instead. Another example was the usage of the words "suckling and suckle" during a love scene. Not an error but an interesting choice of wording because I've never seen the usage of this word when NOT referring to an unweaned newborn infant or young animals...but thats just me..lol Another example was on Pg 191, "how it's very concerning and suspicious that both people I care about are missing from my life while there's a MURDER running around." Should murder be murderer ?
The story didn't go anywhere until 200 something pages. That is when we start getting some answers. We ran around in circles and made NO progress in the mystery of the story. We learn NOTHING until close to the end. The entire story consisted of FLUFF and unnecessary detailing of things that could have been taken out of the story as it would not make a difference in the overall plot. For example, when Jack is attempting to tell Val about what type of supernatural being he is for the 103782 time... we somehow start talking about why Val buys Apple juice... and how much sugar it has in it... why is this necessary or needed? This writer does this multiple times, and after a while, it's just annoying. At 200 pages, I began skimming the book and chapters just to finish it. Not much of anything with real substance or consequence happened after the "grand reveal" that Jack and Seth are egyptian gods....I really like the overall idea of the book and think it would make for a cool story with the crossover between different underworlds, etc. But the book could have been written better and encorporated more mystery.

So I was really into the concept. The idea was interesting, and I initially liked the characters. The FMC got a bit on my nerves just in the sense that she was reallyyyy insecure and had a lot of issues, which was fine up until it overtook her entire personality. She was constantly whining, and like. Idk. It didn't feel like she actually had any character development, which was frustrating. It kind of just felt like the author was trauma dumping her own experiences into a character (which is fine ofc but just not for me. I felt like I was in middle school again).
The romance was also super fast paced. I usually prefer slowburn, but honestly the smut was pretty damn good so I won't complain. He was definitely too perfect though. Like it was obviously a fantasy man, which again, also fine, but I just wish he would've been a little more humanized .
I wasn't a fan of that ending, and also by the end, I wasn't a fan of the FMC. Ik her whole point is that she's damaged and all that, but it really just felt so unnecessarily dramatic sometimes. Like even with the whole bullying thing idk, as a kid I absolutely understand that being traumatizing, but I just felt like her adult self was still that same kid, which was a weird contrast with all the smut and gore. And the FMC and MC trauma dumped on each other SO quickly like oh my goodness that felt super unnatural.
SO yeah all in all, this was an enjoyable read, but the characters were a little too immature and annoying for me. It's hard to read about a grown woman consistently throwing herself pity parties. The worldbuilding was cool though, and I liked the tie ins to different mythologies.
I'm reviewing my own book because I believe this is the best thing I've ever written, both published and not.
Marked is a blend of Egyptian and Greek mythology, set in today's day and age where 'monsters' live among humans. It follows Valkyrie (Val) Dalton, a detective for preternatural crime in Las Vegas with some serious issues. She's also a hellhound for Cerberus, tasked with marking souls in the living realm for the Greek side of the underworld. Because, you know, balance and whatnot.
Did I mention her new partner is an alpha-male with the 'touch her and die' trope? And that he's also from the underworld?
As you progress through the book, so does Val. Honestly, I set this bish up for failure so that she can thrive in the sequel.

This book ignited a genre I didn’t even realize I needed: detective partner romance 😂 I should have guess with my CSI, Lucifer, Psych obsessions but who knew I would have liked it in books too!
The book has some genuinely funny moments, and it is focused around a world where the paranormal exists in modern society- including all of the pantheons??
If you know a little about ancient mythology it can be a little predictable for some of the characters, BUT the story line isn’t crazy predictable.
There are some triggers with alcoholism so just fyi on that!
PSA: this is book one of an upcoming series. It doesn’t leave of a cliffhanger, but it does leave room for more to be desired.
I rate this book a 3.75/5. I really am tempted to bump it up to a 4, but it unfortunately falls a little short. The smut was breathtaking and well written, but I wanted more from the plot. The mystery aspect was good and had some well thought out twists. I think what really dropped it down was a lack of resolution and everything feeling rushed in the last two chapters. This book could have benefited from being about 50 pages longer. I'm not sure I'll look into further books or leave it as a stand-alone. All that said, I am glad I read it, and I still believe it's worth buying.
I was very into the world built with Skin and Shift, but this book.....this blew both of those great works away. It could be my own personal bias and love for mythology but I was thrilled with the added layer of God's interacting with this monster-moved universe. An easy 5/5 with well written steamy moments, flawed characters, and tear jerking instants that will have you almost confused as to why it's impacting you so hard.
I genuinely enjoyed Ally Wagners first series "Skin" ! I had to pick this one up, I will say I'm not the biggest fan of POVs and I will say Valkyrie had me SCREAMIN at the book half of the times like gurl plsss just listen to what others have to say and stop being stubborn BUUUT I will say I still did enjoyed book!! I literally need a second book to know where Valkyrie's and Jack's relationship stand Dx !!!!
For those of us who loved the Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton, this book is a must!
We have a badass FMC who literally takes no shit from anyone. I have a weak spot for these kinds of books where the supernatural world meets law enforcement divisions, our FMC is a specialists in magical creatures.
A fast paced action read with a sprinkle of spice & romance, I highly recommend. It was fun, exciting & I adore the mix of ancient lore (Greek, Egyptian ect..)
So I am a big fan of Egyptian mythology and to see it in this book with a twist of Greek was original. I enjoyed it, kinda left me puzzled at the end since I wanted to know more. But I enjoy the read
ahhh i read this is one sitting. it was so good! it had the mystery, the romance and the murder. I loved how it mixed Greek and egyptian mythology, i don't think i've ever read anything quite like it. I am obsessed. where is book two??
Absolutely amazing! Ally is easily one of my favorite authors! Finished this book in a day and honestly can't wait for the next one! The spice and blood with supernatural flare is chefs kiss!
This was honestly so much better than I expected!! It was a nice, refreshing read after reading so many high fantasy books. I really enjoyed the mashup between Greek and Egyptian mythology!
