I picked this up in 2019 from a little store (Taco Ché) tucked away in Nakano Broadway. It was the middle of the night and most of the other stores around it had closed. Taco Ché glowed amidst a labyrinth of uniform grey shutters. It felt like I'd slipped into a liminal zone where profound and magical possibilities could emerge. At the front were pastel drawings of melancholic teens, at the back—ero guro manga. I grabbed Hakua without knowing anything about it. I burst into manic laughter when it turned out to be some gay af cuming of age story about wanting to fuck your bff and having increasingly unhinged sexual fantasies because of that. The endless deferral of libidinal triggers until your entire world becomes a cum dumpster substitute for your friend.
God, I'm sorry. Honestly, its perversity is refreshingly sincere and earnest—a far cry from male mangaka, such a Asano Inio, who depict every expression of desire as a fucking commute to the vatican and back. Like, it's sweet how god awful horny Hakua's mc is. Poor girl just needs to POP

What has been the basis for KATO’s work is her childhood memories. As a young girl, she was ambiguously attracted to bodies of other young girls by admiration or by sensuality - memories of which remain vivid for her. KATO started to paint “beautiful girls,” almost a goddess-like existence to her at times, initially to cheer herself up during her teenage years that were full of complex and stress.
