About the author

Ik mocht hem voorlezen in het Engels en heb servan genoten. Het boek gaat verder waar deel 1 eindigde en om die reden vind ik hem als stand alone niet zo geschikt. Flappy is weer op haar best en ze doet mij zo aan Hyacint Bucket denken. Je weet wel die dame van ..the Bucket residence the lady of the house speeding. Flappy die gaat voor perfectie en dat ik pracht en praal leert nu wat echt belangrijk is…Familie.

Ook dit boek is weer een aanrader!

I am such a huge fan of @Santamontefiore and was very excited to read the 2nd book of Flappy, who always reminds me of Hyacinth Bucket (you know the lady of the hosluse speaking woman).
The 2nd book starts where it left Flappy in het 1th novel. I loved the fact that Flappy learns in this book that it isn’t about money and perfection but it’s all about Family and Friendship.in live! Goodbye Flappy! I wish you a very happy live!

Visgi, didžiausia knygos spraga – siužeto nebuvimas. Nuolat, kiekviename skyriuje buvo grįžtama prie vieno praeities įvykio, o dabartis liko pasimetusi, kažkur fone. Na, ir, žinoma, nuvylė maisto dietos romantizavimas. Draudimas sau suvalgyti pyrago gabalėlį, kad įtilptum į spintoje dulkančią vestuvinę suknelę? Manau, jau verta tokių dalykų knygose (ir ne tik) atsisakyti, turint omenyje, kad tai gali ne tik įskaudinti skaitytoją, bet ir sukelti jo sveikatai neigiamų pasekmių.

Visgi, turiu paminėti ir kelis knygą „išteisinti” galinčius aspektus. Šis romanas – „Paskutinė vasaros šventė“ tęsinys, o aš pirmos dalies neskaičiau, tad gal dėl to nepajaučiau simpatijų Flepei ir jokiam kitam veikėjui? Galbūt. Gal tada būtų bent jau smalsu sužinoti tolimesnius Flepės nuotykius. Ir dar, aš nuoširdžiai tikiu, jog autorė talentą turi, tai rodo ne tik jos gerbėjų armija, bet dar ir tikiu savo mama, kuri yra perskaičiusi visas jos knygas, išverstas į lietuvių kalbą.

Tad jeigu skaitėte pirmą dalį, perskaitykite ir šią. Na, o jeigu dar nesate susipažinę su autorės kūryba, rekomenduoju pažintį pradėti kita knyga.

Flappy Investigates was a sequel to Flappy Entertains and I was keen to read this book to see what further adventures Flappy was set to have..

Flappy is a sweet country busybody with deep down - a good heart. She's the queen bee of Badley Compton and investigates the new comers to the village who need to know their place. A lot is going on in Flappy's life - including her son coming to the village and a party to organise.

It was an entertaining read but unfortunately the story almost got lost in constant referral to a previous affair and then a new issue with food and diet that I didn't think was written in a healthy way at all.

Still one of my favourite authors - I love the description Santa Montefiore gives of the peoples and places but unfortunately the Flappy books just haven't done it for me.

Als fan van het eerste uur, toen ze nog niet aan veelschrijverij deed, koop ik trouw elk boek van Santa Montefiore. Een gewoonte waar ik misschien beter eens mee zou stoppen. Zelf noemt ze dit een boek dat ze schrijft tussen haar 'grote romans met meer diepgang' door. Van mij hoeft ze dat niet meer te doen.
Na 100 bladzijden begon ik me af te vragen waar dit verhaal naartoe moest leiden. Toen het uit was, wist ik het nog steeds niet.
En als er één ding is wat Flappy niet is, dan is het wel grappig (hallo, overkill). Behalve in het dankwoord, godbetert.

Every Santa Montefiore novel is in this readers opinion a masterpiece. The Flappy Scott-Booth books are a masterpiece all in their own though. These books are a delight to be enjoyed. I cannot wait to see what the delightful Flappy Scott-Booth gets herself into next.

I quite enjoyed this story as I did the first one.
The character Flappy though, appearances are everything to her & even her husband doesn't know the real her.
She hides the newspaper she reads, doesn't confide in him her problems/family issues, listens to classical music in company but prefers ABBA.
She judges every little thing every person in her life does/wears/says & thinks herself superior to them all yet everyone in the village think she's wonderful & they all seem to look up to her.
I can relate to her type & various other family and friends.
Not sure where the story can go though, if she isn't taken down a peg or two it's just a busybody gossiping about everyone in her life.

3.5 stars. This novel follows on from Flappy Entertains, so you know what to expect if you’ve read that. It’s a lighthearted and fun read, sprinkled with humour, courtesy of our delightful heroine Flappy. This instalment introduces us to her son Jasper, his Australian wife and their 2 sons. Flappy embraces her grandmother status with caution at first, but does eventually lean into the role. She’s a wonderfully eccentric and frivolous character that has a good heart underneath all her airs and graces, and she has her insecurities like a lot of women. Fun and easy to read.

Flappy enters the esteemed company of authors like E.F. Benson of Mapp and Lucia renown in this novel. Here is a story of a classic busybody full of her own importance…and yet, readers root for Flappy all the same.

In this second in a series, Flappy has much to flap about. She has had an affair with the delectable Charles even though his wife is one of her close friends. In outdoing the neighbors, she is planning un ballo in maschera, there is a new couple in the village who (horrors) sit in Flappy’s church pew and, as if that were not enough, Flappy’s son is here from Australia. Watch as the indomitable Flappy juggles everything and enjoy a fun read. This book is perfectly fine as a standalone but readers may want to seek out the first in the series as well.

It is eighteen months since I had a virtual visit to Badley Compton to meet Flappy but it certainly didn't feel that long ago. The book starts with more new people moving into Badley Compton who will 'need' Flappy to help them settle in and to understand how things are done.

Flappy needs to make some important decisions. Will she stay away from Charles? Will she spend more time with her friends? Will she allow her grandsons help decorate her Christmas tree?

I enjoyed my virtual escape to Badley Compton. Flappy is a complicated woman who seems to change during this book. I enjoyed the humour and escapism, and I'm happy to recommend Flappy Investigates, available now in hardback, ebook and audiobook

Mooi maar las niet zo vlot door als het eerste deel. Bleef ook wat meer aan de oppervlakte naar mijn idee en ik miste de grappige Flappy een beetje. Maar hoe dan ook, Santa Montefiore blijft een fantastische schrijfster waar ik zeker meer van wil lezen.

Flappy, who has lived in Bradley Compton for many many years, has to deal with a lot of problems all at once. A new family has moved to town who sat down at their seat in church (the nerve!), her son and his family immigrate back from Australia, Charles (the husband of her best friend) still fancies here, her personal assistent might move to London to live with her boyfriend, and she wants to arrange a big New Year’s themed party. Oh and Flappy is afraid that her son is having an affair! On top of all this Flappy has to remain an example of class and style for the town, because if there is one thing Flappy abhors…..

This is the second novel in a series, and it has been a totally different genre for Santa. She has proven with the first novel that she’s perfectly capable of writing a light funny novel and I loved this one even more. The narrator of the audio version does such a great job, she brings the characters to life! The book is like “Keeping up appearances” in a novel, I can totally recommend. I also loved the transformation of Flappy in the story, more and more she realizes that appearances aren’t all that matters, family does.

De tuinen van Devon - serie : deel 2: Een nieuw begin.

Dat Santa Montefiore een fantastische schrijfster is staat als een paal boven water. Haar losse verhalen kennen enorm succes en worden wereldwijd goed verkocht. In menig boekenkast staan haar boeken te pronken en haar Deverill-serie is prachtig bevonden.

Ik las onlangs haar andere serie, de dilogie ‘De tuinen van Devon’ – dat ‘ Bij het licht van de maan’ en ‘Een nieuw begin’ omvat. In deze 2 delen maken we nader kennis met Flappy.
Zij kwam eerder al voor in het boek ‘Onder de Italiaanse zon’ maar daar had ze slechts een bijrol. Het personage Flappy vond Santa wel grappig (Flappy, de naam alleen al) en wou ze toch extra krediet geven door haar de hoofdrol te laten spelen in De tuinen van Devon - serie.

In het tweede deel ‘ Een nieuw begin’ is Flappy vastberaden om het iets anders te doen.

Ze mag zo dankbaar zijn dat Persephone haar wist te redden uit haar benaderde situatie zodat haar ‘geheime’ romance niet publiekelijk aan het licht is gekomen. Ze weet maar al te goed dat dit een schande voor de rest van haar leven zou geweest door haar vlaag van zwakte. Ook beseft ze wat ze allemaal kon verliezen - haar luxe leven, haar rijke Kenneth die haar eigenlijk wel heel dierbaar is en waar ze oprecht van houdt. Ze sluit Persephone in haar hart en beschouwt haar als haar eigen dochter. Ze heeft zelfs een lieve knappe man voor haar gezocht en het klikte meteen tussen die twee want het is vanzelfsprekend dat Flappy uiteraard weet hoe ze het allemaal aan boord moet leggen.

Flappy heeft plechtig beloofd om definitief een einde te maken aan haar passionele ‘geheime’ romance maar vaak mijmert ze toch stiekem terug aan die heerlijke momenten. Eenmaal de tijger in haar terug is getemd en de rust in het dorp terugkeert, wordt het opnieuw druk voor haar met de komst van haar zoon Jasper, schoondochter Briony en hun 2 kleine zoontjes. Ze hebben Australië verlaten en nemen hun definitieve intrek in het dorp. Flappy merkt meteen dat haar schoondochter niet zo kneedbaar is als haar vriendinnen en daar heeft ze het wat moeilijk mee. Ook ergert ze zich mateloos dat haar zoon nog steeds geen vast werk heeft en Kenneth steeds geld blijft toestoppen. Uiteraard houdt ze dit voor zichzelf en verbloemd ze de hele situatie voor het oog van de gemeenschap. Er komt een nieuw jong gezin wonen in het dorp die snel een nauwe vriendschapsband opbouwen met Jasper en Briony. Nieuwsgierig als ze is verdenkt Flappy haar zoon ervan vreemd te gaan. Ze kan er met hem nog niet over praten gezien haar eigen misstap en ze heeft het trouwens te druk met het voorbereiden van het allergrootste nieuwsjaarfeest aller tijden gezien in Badley Compton. Hoewel de strijdbijl tussen Hedda en haarzelf begraven is en die twee nu goeie vriendinnen zijn wilt Flappy toch een nóg groter en nóg chiquer feest geven. Een feest dat iedereen zich zal herinneren ook al loopt deze niet helemaal volgens hoe Flappy het voor ogen had maar dat deert haar niet want ze wordt uiteindelijk aangenaam verrast door haar familie en vrienden.

Flappy overtreft haarzelf in haar eigen groei en straalt in dit boek – ze wil enerzijds alles tot in de puntjes goed krijgen maar anderzijds wil ze ook wel genieten van haar gezin rond haar heen. Ze krijgt het benauwd van vuile kinderhandjes overal in haar kraaknette villa en de rommel dat haar kleinkinderen maken maar ze wilt ook niet overkomen als de koele grootmoeder. Ze heeft schrik wat de mensen zullen denken van hun zelf geknutselde decoratie in de kerstboom maar ze doen haar ook herinneren hoe het er aan toe ging toen haar eigen kinderen nog klein waren en hoe ze genoten van de warme familiale gezelligheid rond deze mooie tijd van het jaar - het was een familiegebeuren en geen tactiek om te pronken met het mooiste en het beste. Ze moet uiteindelijk toegeven dat Kerst draait rond familie, vrienden en gezellig samen zijn en ze beseft maar al te goed dat ze écht alles heeft wat haar hart begeert.

Ik las minder goede beoordelingen over de tuinen van Devon serie maar ik snap helemaal niet waarom. Sommige lezers ergeren zich aan de steeds herhalende quotes zoals "Flappy weet het best, Flappy weet maar al te goed, als één iemand het weet hoe het moet dan is het Flappy wel, ... " Ik vind dit heel leuk en grappig en legt nogmaals het extra accent dat Santa een heel leuk komisch verhaal heeft geschreven en dit dan ook nog eens in Coronatijden.

Deze schrijfstijl is een heel andere stijl dan wat we van haar gewoon zijn maar ze schreef net deze serie om haar lezers te laten lachen, om hen toch wat blijdschap, vreugde en hoop te geven in moeilijke tijden van lockdown en hierin is ze voor mij heel goed geslaagd.
Het bewijst alleen maar dat zij een veelschrijver is en verschillend genre aan kan. Ik raad haar tuinen van Devon serie aan om te lezen en dit zeg ik niet alleen maar omdat ik fan ben van haar schrijven maar ook omdat de serie simpelweg leuk en grappig lezen is en je deze keer tijdens het lezen een glimlach op je gezicht krijgt in plaats van tranen in je ogen.

Ik kreeg het 2de deel 'Een nieuw begin' van uitgeverij Lannoo waarvoor mijn oprechte dank. Ik heb het graag gelezen en Flappy bezorgde me veel plezier.
Persoonlijk vind ik dat je beide delen moet lezen zodat je echt het hoofdpersonage Flappy weet te appreciëren en merkt hoe ze positief groeit doorheen de serie.

Ik geef dit boek 3.5 sterren.

I am afraid that I wasn’t very keen on this book. Whilst it was written quite well, I just couldn’t engage with the main character. I found her narcissistic personality very irritating and I literally ‘got through’ the book. There were one or two things she did which had absolutely no relevance to the story and I started to question where exactly the Author was going with them. The plot was thin and lacked imagination. I do hate to give a poor review but honesty prevails…

I love Santa Montefiore's historic fiction novels and also read Here and Now recently which was very emotive due to the subject matter.

I picked up this book expecting her usual standard but it was definitely under par. I found it twee with a very weak plot. The main character 'Flappy' was highly irritating and her name irked me every time I read it.

Very disappointing from such a good author.

Verhaal wel oke, schrijfstijl in Nederlandse vertaling was niet mijn smaak. Erg veel gebruik van zelfde woorden/uitdrukkingen (“als ze èrgens een hekel aan had/goed in was/…; geen knip voor de neus waard zijn, en meer). Dit bedierf het leesplezier wel voor mij

Ik ben fan van Santa Montefiore en heb dan ook al haar boeken gelezen. Ook dit boek moest natuurlijk niet ontbreken. Het lijkt of de schrijfster met De tuinen van Devon een uitstapje maakt naar een lichte genre. Er zit iets minder diepgang in deze serie maar het is wel erg vrolijk om te lezen.

Flappy woont samen met haar man Kenneth in een echt Engels dorpje in het prachtige landhuis Darnley Manor. Zij houdt zich graag bezig met het organiseren van feestjes in haar bijzonder mooie tuin. Dit jaar nodigt zij dan ook iedereen uit voor het grote nieuwjaarsbal. Voor Flappy allemaal een grote uitdaging maar Flappy zou Flappy niet zijn als ze dat heel goed zou kunnen. Als ook haar zoon met zijn gezin permanent in het dorp komen wonen wordt het uiteindelijk allemaal een groot succes.

De personages in dit boek weet Montefiore prachtig uit te werken. Met name de gekke Flappy met haar bijzondere ideeën en haar eerlijkheid is op een humoristische wijze beschreven. Zij heeft vele uitzonderlijke talenten. Zij moet altijd voorkomend zijn naar haar vriendinnen en sterk blijven om niet te zwichten voor de avances van de knappe Charles. Want dat Is beneden haar waardigheid. Geen dorpsgenoot durft iets aan te merken op het stralende middelpunt van het het dorp.
Gelukkig heeft Flappy een schat van een man die niet alleen rijk is maar haar kent als geen ander en weet dat zij in alles de beste wil zijn. Hij is haar altijd trouw en gaat nooit tegen haar in. Ondanks zijn enorme golf verslaving weet Flappy haar man toch elke keer weer te waarderen.

I didn't know that there is a book about Flappy already, I actually learnt about it after finishing reading "Flappy Investigates", however I didn't had a feeling that I'm missing on something, I was immediately thrown into the heart of the book and into the characters lives.

However, the book didn't sit with me, or maybe rather the characters didn't sit with me, especially the main one. Flappy. She was absolutely not my kind of person. Is it only me with a feeling that she led a hypocritical way of life? On the outside, everything shone, buton the inside shown us there are so many lied told by her, that she and members of her family lie, have secrets, are not honest with each other and their friends and it's just the facade that must shine. No matter the price, if others think my life is the best then I can by dying inside because I'm so unhappy, but it's ok, let them think everything is a bed of roses. And I hate such things. So it's no wonder, I think, that I absolutely didn't warm to Flappy and her family. She loved to be the centre if attention and wanted to know everything, literally everything, and actually I still don't know what did she investigate?

I liked the writing style, it was light and easy to follow, chatty and colourful. So maybe I just didn't get the characters but I didn't enjoy the book and no, I didn't root for Flappy. She was annoying. Sorry. It should be actually 2 stars, but I loved the cover and, like I sadi, the writing style was brilliant.

Another enjoyable read from Santa Montefiore!

Flappy!!! What a character she is, love her or hate her, she’s an incredible woman and makes an incredible read.

In this new book she’s off investigating matters close to home when she believes something is amiss. But has she got the wrong end of the stick?

Combined with planning a masked ball to rival all previous parties in the town, welcoming her sons family home from Australia permanently and planning Christmas, Flappy has a lot going on! Oh and her friend’s husband is showing more than a little interest in her too.

Well worth a read, Flappy is unique, likeable and sometimes a bit annoying, but sure that adds to the fun!

I brought this book for a couple of reasons, it was cheap on Amazon and that it had some good feedback and poor feedback.
Really wished I listened to the poor feedback. This book was not for me. Didn’t feel the story lines were not gripping enough. So hard to get into it, I dreaded
Picking the book back up. It was good an ok read. Passed time,
Although wish I could get the time back. Last 3/4 chapters things started happening but was
Not shocked. People in book were rich, lovely home. With a sauna, pool, yoga place.!let’s just buy the son his own house. Yeah because people have thousand like that sitting there in the bank.

Is it worth the read? No….. please do not waste time or money.

This was a wonderfully lighthearted continuation from Flappy Entertains which commences with Flappy and Hedda addressing the very important issue of the new residents sitting in the front pew. This book continued in the wonderfully uplifting vein of the first but is also totally fine to read as a standalone. Flappy has a wonderful point of view and her self image is hilarious, it was good to see her challenged by her son and his family not to mention still contending with her feelings for Charles. Overall this is a real tonic of a read and a great antidote to the current doom and gloom.

Having throughly enjoyed the ‘Flappy Entertains’ novel I was looking forward to seeing what laid in store for this character next.

I’ll had to admit that I was a little disappointed and felt that her character has shifted to something almost dull. In the previous novel her character had become quite vibrant whereas this seemed to negate a lot of that development.

I enjoyed this books view of the more sentimental side to flappy but felt it came at the expense of her vibrancy and sense of flare. The storyline itself was okay though not likely to re-read sadly.

This was my first encounter with Flappy (I absolutely hate the name) and although very light and easy reading it was an amusing and very tongue in cheek book. I loved the fact that Flappy was such a paragon of virtue!

I love Santa Montefiore's stories and i loved Flappy, her friends, and the world she lives in where appearances are at the centre of life.
An entertaining story that made me laugh and kept me hooked. There're some moments when you feel sad for these women and other moment when you think they're very lucky and shallow at the same time.
Highly recommended.

Flappy is back, a great funny character. In this story she meets new people in the village, has an admirer, organises everyone in the village and her son is home with family in tow. Plenty of adventures and laughs ensue.
Yet again Santa Montefiore has written a great story, I cannot wait to see what else Flappy gets up to.
