The book follows a little girl as she gets ready for a day in Egypt. She wakes up, gives a kids to her parents, eats ful, visits a fruit stand, walks along the Corniche, and plays with her grandparents.
I love how many Arabic words are used in the text! It was beautiful to see the pronunciation help for the words.
The pictures are adorable and there are little areas where babies and toddlers will love pointing out colors and fruits. My kids love when board books get interactive!
I enjoyed this book and love seeing the beautiful authentic Egyptian joy on the pages.
This vibrant and joy-filled board book will transport young readers to a vivid day in Egypt. With fun language, sensory details, and colorful illustrations, the story is sure to engage toddlers and preschoolers. And there’s plenty for adult readers to enjoy, too! I loved learning key words in Egyptian Arabic, like yalla (Let’s go!) and bahebek (I love you). And I appreciated the easy-to-follow phonetic spellings included as well as the helpful glossary. This beautiful book would be a fantastic addition to any home or school library! Highly recommended!
I loved the succinct, yet honest dive into the Egyptian culture and lifestyle. The interwoven Arabic was a beautiful touch. This book is a great way to plant seeds of pride in young Egyptians or to introduce others to the world outside their reach.
This is such a sweet board book exploring the beauty of spending a day in Egypt. I love the use of sensory details as the family ventures out on their day, from buying fruit at the market to dancing with Teita and Geddo in their apartment. The illustrations are bright, and the glossary at the end it a lovely touch not seen in many board books. Definitely a fun way for litter readers to discover their own country and/or to travel to another country and learn new phrases before bedtime.
This book is a must have for future world travelers. The beautiful words (and information) from Aya are perfect for this young audience, and interesting for grown up readers, too. The illustrations are vibrant, fun, and engaging. I am sure it is a story little ones will reach for again and again.
What a lovely book to share with young children about their home country or a country they can learn about. The language is simple but full of sensory images and onomatopoeia. The story begins and ends with kisses, which is endearing. The glossary is a wonderful touch.
A colorful and engaging board book that will transport little ones to a day in Egypt. With a simple Storyline, layered with Arabic words, it’s the surest way to enhance a child’s worldview from birth. Barefoot Books has done it again! A perfect book for children to learn about the daily life of a child in Egypt. Kids get to experience what it is like to spend a day with family from an Egyptian child's perspective. This book opens a window for children to learn about the life of children in Egypt. Beautiful illustrations and I loved the transliteration of some of the common terms used in the region. Must read!
This is such a sweet board book, rich with culture, joy, and lots of learning opportunities for little ones. The illustrations are colorful and energetic, adding to the book's re-readability. A definite winner!
Such a sweet book! It's a perfect way to introduce kids to Egypt by using universally recognizable routines (getting ready for the day, visiting relatives) and integrating more specifically Egyptian nuances (food, instruments, places) or Arabic terms. The illustrations are bright and warm. I can tell this will be a great series- looking forward to more.
This is a fun, colorful book where we get to spend a day in Egypt with a little girl and her family. The sights and sounds, endearing family terms, and tasty food (along with the Arabic pronunciation) are sure to entertain little ones at each reading - because you won’t read it just one time. I’ve already read it to my nephew multiple times!!! Be sure to add this enjoyable book by Aya Khalil with fun illustrations by Magda Azab to your collection.
4.5 This sweet board book is part of a series, the other two books are Japan and France, releasing in October. All are brightly illustrated, 20 page books for ages zero to four and take the littlest of readers into a country, through sights, experiences, foods and language. This particular book does not feature any visible #muslimsintheillustrations but the author is Muslim, and so I am reviewing and sharing it here.
The framing of the book is a day in the life of a little girl, who wakes up with bosas from her mama and baba and greetings of Ahlan. Some of the words are written in Arabic script with the English transliteration and pronunciation provided, other times it is just the English transliteration of the Arabic with the pronunciation asterisked and written smaller immediately below the text.
Once she is awake, she gets dressed, brushes her teeth and is off with her baba to buy pita and ful. The busy street offers sights to see and fruits to pick from. She ponders and asks herself and the readers which one to choose.
At her Teita and Geddos there is dancing and tabla playing before walking back home along the Corniche. Dinner is served and bedtime has arrived. The book concludes with a summary of her day linking the Arabic words to the illustrations and English meaning, as well as some pronunciation tips for the Arabic sounds.
As a Muslim reviewer I had to hope there might be one hijab clad woman in the illustrations, I know many Muslims don't cover and Egypt is diverse, but considering the lens I review from, I feel obligated to state that opinion.
A little more critically, I was a bit surprised on the page with the colorful boats that the color names yellow, blue, and purple, were not included in Arabic and only in English. Seemed that would have been an naturally and easy inclusion.
Overall, the book did a good job of celebrating Egypt without over explaining, keeping it bright and engaging for toddlers. I really like the language being shared in a story context, not just a book with a picture on it and words in different languages. I also liked that while the details were Egypt specific, there were also pages that were universal.
In this colorful board book, a little girl begins her morning with hugs from her mother and father (Mama and Baba) and has a hearty breakfast of bread and ful (a breakfast dish of beans). She visits her grandparents (Geddo and Teita) and sings and dances with them. She watches the boats, buys fruit at the market, and finally goes to bed after a wonderful day in Egypt.
I love this beautiful board book that teaches children about different cultures around the world! At the back of the book, there are explanations about the words that are in a different language, along with guides to learn how to pronounce them correctly.
The illustrations are so cute, and all the little characters are adorable! Each page is full of color and energy!
I love the sweet and simple plot as we learn about a regular day in this country. It shows that all around the world, we are pretty similar. We all get up and brush our teeth and have breakfast with our family. It's the lovely simple things in life that bind us together, and showcasing those similarities will help young children to relate to different cultures around the globe.

Part of the new "Our World" series, this colorful and sturdy board book provides an insider's glimpse into Egyptian culture while also fostering cultural pride and a sense of belonging. Young readers follow a young girl as she goes about her day in the company of her father. The two of them go in search of delicious foods, visit family, and see the sights before returning home for a delicious meal prepared by her mother. Rich colors, large font size, and the inclusion of Arabic in various scenes as well as a pronunciation guide add to the feeling of culture immersion and delight in spending a day in one part of Egypt. Each of the Egyptian Arabic terms is explained in the back matter so that, at the very least, readers are able to greet others and identify some foods typically found in this country. Books such as this one provide an introduction to a place as well as maybe encouraging youngsters to dream of someday visiting Egypt.
I loved this beautiful board book by the amazing Aya Khalil! The language used is perfect for a toddler/preschooler and the pictures make you feel that you are indeed in Egypt! So many beautiful memories came rushing to my mind as I started reading this book as well as ideas for how to incorporate this book in our diverse family library. I want my children to learn about Egypt where my family comes from and this book is just a great way to introduce the beautiful culture, foods and warm family relations. Highly recommend! Thanks Aya for another great book and for representing Arab and Muslim culture so beautifully and accurately in your books!
Readers will go on a journey through a day in Egypt, from waking up, to dinnertime. Readers will learn about shopping for food and see some boats. This book shows how some common words are written, as well as how they are pronounced. At the end, there is a glossary that provides definitions to the new words. Simple sentences and bright illustrations will attract even the youngest of readers.

This is a sweet board book about a day in the life of an Egyptian little girl. Includes information about family, food, and traditions. Bright and bold illustrations add charm and appeal to this story about a day in Egypt. Part of the Our World Series. Highly recommended.
This is another great addition to the Our World series. Reads of all ages can learn new Arabic words, including pronunciation on-page and detailed meanings at the end of the book.
I enjoyed this sensory-focused experience of one of Egypt. While Egypt is one the most famous nations in the world for its history, I love that the focus wasn't so much on the historical things that tourists get caught up in (the pyramids) but more so on what daily life is like in contemporary Egypt. Simple language, Egyptian phrases, and sensory details make this a fun but educational read for a very young child.
The cutest upcoming board book infused with the beauty of Egypt. I must say that seeing one of my favorite foods on display in a board book was a true joy!
Aya did a wonderful job weaving Arabic, and a beautiful day in Egypt into a relatable board book for every toddler.
I loved everything about this fun, sweet book, and the illustrations are on point.
Note: tabla(musical instrument)is shown. . I often get this question about board books for younger kids. So here it is everyone. Please save this post. Just loved to see this super cute board book seeing Egypt through the eyes of a young girl and how she spends her day with her family including mom, dad, grandma aka taita, and grandpa aka giddo. We lack board books written by Muslim authors. Look at simple and cute illustrations. . Lovely book. If you're a teacher or homeschooler and even a parent of a young child, this book is a must. Can be a beautiful bedtime story or a perfect fit for a morning basket.
