My goals for college were pretty simple: Get an education. Meet some new friends. Enjoy the mountains of Colorado. If I was lucky, find a boyfriend. Pretty sure they did not include being stalked by a magical black market. Or having multiple boyfriends. I mean, come on. What are the odds?

Unfortunately, my birth parents were mages that left me orphaned at a young age. Instead of growing up surrounded by spells and magic, I grew up with normal humans. The world might know about magic, but that didn't mean they accepted it. Mages have no rights, and my foster parents tried to stamp out the tiny bit of magic I held on to. Notice I used the word tried? I manage to sneak in a few things here and there. The perfect temperature pizza? Not a problem. And I've never had a bad hair day in my life. Don't even get me started on red lights…

But it was those little things that put me on the black market's radar. An untrained mage with little knowledge of the magical world was easy pickings. Now, the only thing standing between me and a whole lot of unpleasantness is the pack of hot werewolves that made me theirs.

This book is intended for mature audiences. 18+ readers only! It contains language and sexual situations. This is a medium burn reverse harem where the girl gets all the guys. Why Choose? Harem members added as series progresses. Series will contain some mild M/M scenes.

Dakota has two passions in life: writing and cinnamon tea. Tea so strong she ought to be able to see her future when she drinks it, and the writing? Well she hopes it makes you see stars when you read it. She creates reverse harem romance novels filled with things that go bump in the night. That handsome werewolf walking down the street? The suave vampire you’re just dying to get a taste of? You’ll find them enraptured by charming, smart ladies ready to make those bad boys work for their affection. When not writing, Dakota can be found on the back of a horse out on the trail or tending the animals on her farm.

The premise of the story is that Sophia is being hunted by the Black Magic Mafia or something. But the actual story is forming bonds with Doc, Ed and Allen. The magical mafia only do 2 things, they attacked once and ran off, then they kidnapped Sophia. I mean I don’t understand really exactly all the players, how this world works, and what’s really going on. It was fairly boring too until the about 85% when things finally get going and then it ends. I think I may check out the next book to see if it gets better, but I just needed a bit more from the overall plot. Also the whole “he’s my teacher” crap was annoying. We see them as teacher and student like once in the entire book. If we spent more time in the classroom with him I might entertain this he’s my teacher crap, but otherwise he doesn’t seem to be a teacher authority thing.

Read other books by this author in the future: yes
MC: Sofia, Doc, Ed, Allan
SC: Victoria, Sam, Ash, Alex,

This is the debut reverse harem story of Dakota Brown. And I rate it 3.5 round up to four brownie point for debut story!

Sofia moves to Sunnyglade, Colorado to attend a small liberal arts college. On her first day in town she runs into Alex and dumps her coffee on him. He is persistent and wants to get to know her.
The next person she meets is Victoria her room mate. They get along very well from the get go. While getting her stuff from the hotel to move into the dorm they meet Ed and Allan when they return and they help them carry Sofia’ss stuff into the dorm.
At a party they met a friend of Ed and Allen, Doc. Turns out that Doc is Sofia’s history teacher.

I liked that this book had a light handed note. It was nice even if Sofia was in a few shitty situations. She was the girl who’s glass is half full and not half empty. Victoria is a loyal best friend, the best BFF you can wish for. She puts up with a lot.

I liked this book very much.

Note to myself about the content:

Review for the series:
Sweet and low-stakes paranormal RH, which frankly is about all my brain can handle lately. Closed polyamorous relationship with new members added as the series goes on, all with consent from others in the relationship, and the sexual situations include m/f and m/m pairing as well as larger groups as they get more comfortable with each other. The only consistent problems I had were that sometimes it seemed like there were weird continuity errors -- not a big deal but a little confusing at times, and Victoria (the heroine's always supportive roommate) seemed more like a mammy character than I was comfortable with.

There were creepy villains but they remain pretty much furniture throughout the series. There is a plot but it's secondary to the relationship-building.

2.5 stars...

Let me just say that the first 40% is so ridiculously mundane and focused on getting to know all the characters. The plot is constantly on the back burner to the relationship developments, which irked the crud out of me to no end. Especially at the end of the book where the lead, Sophia, and her parents seem more concerned over who Sophia dates than the danger she is placed in by being an untrained/unknown mage. I think I skipped a part of the big reveal, or maybe it just wasn't there as to why she was in so much danger. I felt when she disclosed the information, I missed it in the story. Probably because it seemed so focused on their relationships. Ugh. Just so much irritation with the book overall. I almost didn't even finish it, but I forced myself to.

A good first book.

I enjoyed this for the most part. I liked the characters and their interactions with each other and how each of their relationships developed over the course of the book. The plot was fairly basic, but I liked what the author did with it. It was on the slower side, pacing wise, but nothing that bogged the momentum of the story down so much that I got bored.

Really good read

The characters are strong and the book is well written, I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, it was an easy read and I couldn't put it down, I read the book within hours and lost sleep because it was easy to fall into the pages, a fantastic escape.

"Becoming," is a high fantasy novel in which the FMC (Sofia) goes to college and finds herself immersed way more into the magical community than she bargained for. Between all sorts of guys vying for her affection and trying to keep up in classes, she learns that the magic mafia aka the magical black market has learned of her gifts and wants to steal her for themselves. In this exceptionally medium burn book, Sofia has to figure out what exactly it is (and who) she wants ... before its too late. This book is the first in a completed series, and while it does continue after this book, you could stop after this one if you wanted. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger and all the issues in this book are resolved by the end.

While it is advertised as a reverse harem story, this story was more about Sofia building her harem than anything else. And while the Amazon summary states, "series will contain some mild M/M scenes, " they are so mild in nature that it was hardly worth mentioning. The spice is more like a PG-13 movie, and very little other than making out happens. I've also not read a story that managed to make the spicy scenes sound clinical and hesitant in nature. The guys and Sofia are all concerned about going too far, too fast. Which, in real life is fine, but in this fantastical world where werewolves are adding a female to their pack ... that's not usually how things work.
This reads very robotic in it's delivery. Now, I don't know if I would feel the same way if I had read the book versus listening to the audiobook, and maybe it's just a voice narrator issue. But characters interactions and even internal monologues felt very stilted and starched in nature. It almost felt like someone with limited knowledge of English or an alien had observed humans interacting with each other and then spent a long time away from humans - then after like a year or two tried to write a book based on their previous knowledge of how humans acted. It also tilted towards sounding a little juvenile in its overall tone - once again, I don't know if I would feel the same way if I had read it versus listening to the audiobook. There was also a lot of time dedicated to explaining, in great detail, the very mundane and the minutia of the characters day to day. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, I just think it took up a lot of time and didn't always add to the overall plot.

Despite all the downsides that I found with this book, I will be downloading the next one. At the very least to see if the spice gets any better. But also to see if reading the story makes a difference to listening to the story and if that changes my opinion on things.

This book is a fun and quick read. I like the premise, but it seemed to me as if not much foundation was really built for the rest of the trilogy to rest on. Not necessarily a bad thing, just not what I was expecting.

I like Sofia and her guys and the relatively light read that this series seems to be so far. Not much in the way of steam, but that’s okay, it isn’t really needed for this book to be enjoyable.

So many things I want to know and hope the next book addresses. Like, what’s up with Ash? Is Doc able to do what he said? Who’s gonna school our girl and what will her pack think of that? So much to explore! So I should get to it.

The biggest issue I had with the writing is that the author doesn’t seem to know how to write in first person for anyone other than Sofia. All other POV chapters are written in third and it’s weird. So that dropped the star rating for me. Book one gets a rounded up 3.75 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

You should give this series a chance, it just might check your boxes.

Loved it

I absolutely loved this book! This series is addictive in the best possible way, and it had me hooked from the very beginning! The characters are absolutely fantastic. Each one is lovable and endearing in their own way. The characters create a great balance amongst one another. There’s just enough angst to make the book believable, but not so much that it feels like a chore to read. While the men are your typical big, strong, capable, hero types the women are not wilting flowers! I love that the women are strong, independent, fierce individuals without compromising personality. Thankfully, no unpleasant bitchy types to be found so far! The only potential issue I could foresee for some Readers is there is some MM scenes. So, if you are uncomfortable with male/male interactions/intimacy this series will not be for you. However, if you’re like me, and you don’t mind then this book is absolutely for you! While the men are first and foremost for her, there are plenty of group interactions, and there are scenes exclusively for the men as well.

I'm not the target audience.

Rudimentary writing here, there is world building then there's constantly describing the colour of walls and carpets. I'd have been more excited if the walls ate you if they were a different colour.

Some may like this for very easy bedtime reading, if you get my hint. Funnily enough for being so descriptive the characters come across bland. The heroine didn't seem all that keen on the MMCs either, there was more enthusiasm about coffee. I'm shocked the heroine is meant to be collage age, came across younger. DNF by the way.

Enjoyed the book thoroughly, this book pulled me out of a reading slump. Has the typical aspects of characters new to rh. The trust in each other to not get upset with the situations in the book is great. No judgement is shown towards each other which is always a breath of fresh air. The main MC is just a girl trying to stay on her feet in an unfamiliar world while going with the flow because freaking out helps no one. The slight MM in the book was done well and allows for further character expansion. Its not a very complex plot and is a good straight forward read. No complex drama to stress about. I found this book a relaxing read that was still entertaining enough that I read it in 4hrs.

Very on the nose writing. Cute, but not memorable.

It reads like a typical debut novel. Too much "tell" with not enough "show". Had some cute and funny moments, but I found myself skimming a lot. Much of the dialog was useless and/or gave repetitive information. More suitable to a reading level younger than I.

I made a second attempt at a read-through to give a more detailed review why I still didn't want to finish the book. DNF at 25% after Doc mentioned that the black market was after Sofia.

Small things about the writing and cast choices irritated me. The supernatural activism from the roommate was a little over-the-top, and there was a weird emphasis on drinking water all the time for some reason to combat altitude, which I had no idea if true. Did it really matter for a supernatural reverse harem romance?

The men that seemed to be the FMC Sofia's love interests all had weird quirky personalities, and the dialogue with them was very formal for fellow college students. One of the men, Doc acted pretty creepy for a professor that taught Sofia during the current school term, like hugging her and holding her hand during an off-campus hike. The insta-lust the men displayed with cursory handshakes honestly seemed like a shortcut to explaining why they would find each other attractive (and we're not just talking about the given hot looks here). Lastly, going back to where I stopped reading, the men apparently had a truce with the black market running in their college town that wasn't fully explained by the time I stopped, but why would good citizens in a *college town* be okay with this instead of attempting to shut the human trafficking part down at least????

Sofia herself lacked some common sense as an FMC and didn't think it weird how the men behaved around her by being all shifty with answers, and she never pressed them for more answers before agreeing to see them again. Even her own magical abilities didn't make much sense with her cursory explanation of her abilities - they were all over the place.

Based on where this story was going and my previous mediocre experience with the author's work in their Pizza Shop Exorcist series, I'm not bothering with any more of the book and series.

Becoming is the first installment into the RH series Mountain Magic by Dakota Brown.

I had far too many issues with the writing. It was fairly stilted; allowing us to get all the facts but in a somewhat robotic or methodical way. This didn’t necessarily interrupt the flow of the story too much, outside of the building tension somewhere in the middle.

There’s a definite lack of world building in this book. It appears to be written with the assumption that the reader knows enough about common supernatural lores to get by with only simple specific concepts changed and mentioned. Very lazy in my opinion.

The characters are my main focus in any book. That Brown captured my interest and real emotions towards Sofia, Ed, Allan, Doc, Victoria, and Ash is surprising. Given the egregious areas in which the author could use some spiffing up.

I’m interested to see how Ash fits in. I have my assumptions in him becoming part of the inner sanctum. Now, whether that will be as an addition to Sofia’s growing harem or with Victoria given their past compatibility is hard to decipher.

Book 1

Not a bad read my only hang up is the whole professor thing where he “fosters” and acts like a father figure with the guys and then how they all want to be with the lead female and then there was some kissing between them. I just kinda wish it was omitted that he fostered and was responsible for the guys when they were young boys. It adds a creepy factor that takes away from the hotness.

Fire on the mountain

Sofia is college bound and ready to fly. Well, as much as a human used to non mountainous altitude can. Air gets a little thin, you know. But her roommate is nice, for a supernatural rights vigilante, and classes aren't too bad. There's a few guys that are showing some interest, 3 get along, one decidedly not. And then there's the Viking that's lurking. But when the magic mafia puts her in the cross hairs things get really interesting. As in, "may you live in interesting times" cursed sort of interesting. Yay.

Spoilers ahead.
This was fun. Very minimal world building but still fun. A lot of blondes, though, lol. I think Sofia and the one beau are the only brunettes in the bunch. Not a redhead, chestnut, or dyed otherwise in the bunch. I'm glad the the little bit of info given relates to certain species and how it's both genetic and transmissible. I'm guessing magic is a born only deal, though. I'm not sure how the training for mages works, though. The bit at the end about it being either family or someone they plan on being involved with must mean that to learn magics mingle, and sort of binds them together? Although, must be a bit more than that or good friends would suffice. But, we're given enough to be curious over. The reveal, their rights being fought over, the threats from exploiters - although, other than a brief mention of 1 use no other reason for stealing mages. Maybe the weres are for underground fighting matches? The relationships move a little quickly. No fated mates, or anything like that, just that they get really comfortable with each other really quickly. And apparently bites have an aphrodisiac effect, and gender doesn't matter. I don't complain about m/m, at all really, but especially when there's 3 or more guys. A lady can only handle so much. But if it offends you, you won't be comfortable reading this. I have other questions, but they're definitely major, reading ruining spoilers, so I'll have to see if they're answered in 2.
Oh, and the editing is really well done. I don't think I highlighted more than a handful of items.

Full series review

This is a full series review of the trilogy. I didn't read the fourth book as it's only like 126 pages? Maybe? It's also three short stories about the characters of the trilogy.
It's an ok read. I finished it, but I can honestly say I probably won't remember the characters next week.
The world building isn't much. Just the general idea of the supernatural world coming out to the real world. It would have been nice if instances had been embellished upon concerning the struggles of the super natural community. Most of the world building was spent on the mountain they lived on and the small town they went to school in.
The plot was the same through all three books. I don't understand why book three had the same plot due to the situation being handled in book 2. Why did they keep coming after her when they couldn't use her the way they wanted anymore? It was confusing.
The romance interests were easy. Book one was the best one. It was really cute. The characters were not cookie cutter. Each character had their own personality and maintained them throughout the series.
The Magic had some different spins on it. But it didn't seem well thought out by the author. For instance, the vampire had bracelets that held magical reserves so that he was able to perform magic. Well, when the wages used up all their magic, they were severely weakened. Wouldn't a mage make magical reserves for themselves to pull on when they were weakened? Instead of pulling on their bond for energy that weakens the whole group? Furthermore, one of her mates came from centuries before. He had knowledge of magic that was lost through time and the Renaissance. With someone with that type of knowledge, wouldn't you train with him as much as possible to learn spells that have been lost to modern mages? The basic spells they used were the same ones throughout the series. There weren't any new spells. No, ah ha moments. Just basic.
There was some humor in the series and I found most of it to be amusing.
All in all it was an ok read. Nothing that I will reread. It has a lot of potential to be more than what it is.

DNF - quit at 25%.
This book flowed so slowly, it just bored me into not caring. There's really not a world building, maybe it will be a learn as she does, but I'm not sure. There's too much mystery in the first 25%, and no real connections or hints for me -as to what's going on. It needed some kind of clarity for some of the events happening for a reader to be hooked into the story to make them want to continue. Some things happened that just made no sense with no explanation as to why it happened. I really felt no connection to the main character -Sophia, she seemed odd with no reasons given to her odd behavior. All these guys are introduced so early on (4) with hints that they might be supernatural but not really detailed, and leaves you wondering if all of them are going to be in her RH (that is only known she has a RH from the blurb). I absolutely hate the teacher-student relationship theme. It's crossing a line for me mentally, that is hard for me to stomach. In the end, I just couldn't care enough to want to finish this book.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

This book took me a while to read but I did enjoy it. I think I may have burnt myself out on reading just a bit. The relationship was a bit more of a slow burn than some reverse harem books and it is neither a good or bad thing, it worked for this book. The FMC is a college aged woman but I like how the author writes her characters because they don’t act as if they are inherently stupid just because they are young and I really appreciate that.

The relationship dynamic was really interesting and I was curious to see how it would play out prior to her making a decision. I was definitely a bigger fan of the pack and of course the other guy turns out to be the evil one.

She is still new to understanding her magic and has a lot to learn but she was able to get herself out of a difficult situation and figure somethings out through instinct.

I personally love reverse harems but hate that it can be so hard to find books with the MCs all being adults beyond high school. I have no desire to read about high school romance and really appreciate every time I find a book with older characters. I typically prefer characters older than in this book but like I said this author writes very well and makes it easy to overlook.

I definitely recommend reading this book and plan to continue the series!

Okay, I’m going to say this: I don’t like to pick on books that were obviously written with love by the author. The painstaking way it’s been edited, and the carefully casual dialogue along with other little details show that the author really loved writing this....that being said, I am half way through and I just can’t finish it. There are too many guys tossed in the story at once and they all have some kind of blonde hair and blue eyes and two of them are even related....we haven’t even gotten a chance to know the FMC and there are just men vying for her attention everywhere. And a few of them act very weird but the FMC never questions it....and then there’s the weird instant best friend that she is lucky enough to be roommates with....that’s just weird too. The “friend” is just this odd third wheel on all of her instant dates....I don’t know. The vibe of the story is weird. Hell, I’m halfway through and don’t even know why the story is!

Her magical powers me are that she can cook her pizza, never waits for a table at a restaurant, and always has great hair? Weird...

I don’t know, I can see the effort made but I just can’t keep reading. Great effort though!

So far so good!!!

So far I like how the book started out it has a good push going forward I like how the story is playing out and it’s not being forced. I just wish that they had better explanations for some of the stuff and the people like give us a good introduction with the people so that we understand what’s going on (ex:Sam) because with the black market stuff and the truce reasonings and everything it kind of gets confusing and lost along the way but since it’s such a good story you get a good understanding so you still keep going forward so that’s what I like about it even though there’s that one slight dislike. This book is like refreshing because it really doesn’t follow the normal trends for these reverse harem books but I really do love the fact that even though the guys are into her and all about her like literally all about her!!! Lol…but they still have their own personal relationships and that bonding them tightly with each other and I like it I’d recommend it to people because I think that is very spicy really interesting and so far so good I can’t wait to see more..,
