The ghost of a recently deceased chocolatier believes he was murdered, and it's up to young witch Brynn Warren to use her magical gifts and old-fashioned sleuthing skills to find out how he really met his bitter end in this enchanting new Evenfall Witches B&B Mystery.
After spending months unable to use her powers, Brynn Warren is once again using her gift and working at her family's bed-and-breakfast. Her heart is full, and although one of her aunts wonders if it might be a little more full with a bit of romance in her life, Brynn is certain that finding love again is not in her future. In fact, she can’t imagine anyone being more certain of anything…except for maybe, the recently deceased Mortimer Sweete. He’s certain he’s been murdered, and he wants Brynn’s help to bring his killer to justice.
Mort is positive he knows who killed him: his business partner's wife, Cookie, who had been trying to get them to sell the candy shop for months. But Brynn doesn't share his conviction. After all, the coroner ruled his death natural causes, and Mort did have health problems in life. But with Cookie putting up a For Sale sign for the shop already, Brynn knows she can't just let it go.
Trying to solve a might-be murder while attempting to stop her aunt from meddling in her personal life seems like a recipe for disaster. If Brynn wants to bring Mort's spirit peace, she'll have to rely on all her skills—both magical and mundane—to uncover the truth.
After spending her formative years reading Grimms’ fairy tales and stirring up potions in the creek behind her house, Auralee Wallace knew she would grow up to be a witch. When that didn’t work out, she decided becoming a writer was the next best thing. Now, Auralee is the author of multiple novels, including the Otter Lake mystery series and The Evenfall Witches B&B mysteries. She lives in Ottawa with her husband, kids, dog, and cat. When the Crow's Away is the second book in Auralee Wallace's bewitching Cozy Mystery series, Evenfall Witches B&B.
The first book, In the Company of Witches, was a great series starter and definitely left me wanting more.
These books follow Brynn Warren, who after the death of her husband, moves back into the B&B run by her Aunts, Nora and Izzy. The stated purpose is to help them run the place, but everyone quietly acknowledges that Brynn needs some time to heal surrounded by loved ones.
The Warren family have been a part of Evenfall for hundreds of years. There are whisperings around town, of course, that they are witches, but the Warrens do try hard to hide their true powers from the general public.
Brynn's powers faded after she lost her husband, but have slowly been coming back to her. Brynn's special power is that she can converse with the dead.
In this installment, Brynn is visited by the recently departed soul of local chocolatier, Mortimer Sweete. Mortimer insists he was murdered and he wants Brynn to find out who did it and help bring them to justice.
Mort has a suspect in mind, but as Brynn digs in, she discovers even more potential suspects. It appears Evenfall's business community isn't as quaint and peaceful as it first appears.
Auralee Wallace definitely knows how to write a Cozy. This was so fun, intriguing and cute. I loved getting to know more about Brynn's family in this one. I am even more attached to this cast of characters now.
I absolutely love an amateur sleuth trope and this one is well done. Having Brynn's Aunts help her out definitely added the perfect amount of light humor to this murder mystery.
The ending was so intriguing, setting us up perfectly for another installment. I sense a romance on the horizon. I can't wait for the next book!
Thank you so much to the publisher, Berkley Books, for providing me with a copy to read and review.
I am completely hooked on this series and plan to read any that are published!!
Oooh that ending 🙃 As a mystery, I found this cozy to be pretty mediocre, but all the parts about love were so cute. And you can never go wrong with witchy little towns, especially when they have unique witch hunters
When the Crow’s Away by Auralee Wallace is the second book in the paranormal cozy Evenfall Witches B&B mystery series. As with most cozy mystery series each book in this series will feature it’s own mystery to be solved within so they can be read as a standalone or in any order if choosing to do so. There is however character development that will carry over from book to book for those that follow the series from the beginning.
Brynn Warren comes from the long line of Warren witches who have been in Evenfall, Connecticut for the last four hundred years. Brynn helps run her family bed and breakfast with her two aunts who of course also practice witchcraft. Brynn had decided though that after the death of the love of her life that she wanted to give up her magic but hadn’t told her aunts when a guest at the B&B had been murdered and Brynn had to solve the case.
Now Brynn has begun to use her gift of speaking with the dead again and she is visited by a newly arrived ghost. A local chocolatier, Mortimer Sweete, believes that his death was no accident and he wants Brynn to find out just who killed him. Brynn first finds Mort’s death is supposed to be natural causes but the fact that his first suspect is already trying to sell his shop Brynn can’t help but to begin to ask around and see if she can’t get to the bottom of the case for poor old Mort.
It’s not a secret that I love to find books that combine and mix around different genres since I love to read quite a few of them myself so the Evenfall Witches B&B mystery series was right up my alley. I became a fan of the characters in the series in book one so I wasn’t surprised to find myself quickly right back in the action and gobbling up the story. This series has the humor I enjoy along with some quirky witchy fun along the way of solving a nice mystery. Will definitely be back again for book three in the future.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
4.5 Stars — WHEN THE CROW'S AWAY is a fantastic continuation of this paranormal cozy mystery series. Evenfall is an absolutely charming place, and it was great to be back with Brynn and her witchy aunts and uncle. This time Aunt Izzy does some meddling in Brynn's love life, which she's none to thrilled about. However, she does have a distraction in the ghost of a deceased candy maker who firmly believes he was murdered. Now that Brynn has her powers back, she's ready to help.
This is one of the more emotional cozy mystery series I've read, because it deals with loss and grief in a deeper way. Plenty of family drama too! The murder mystery in this book was rather intriguing, and the twist at the end was totally unexpected. I love how the last chapter hinted at what's to come in the next book and I am ready for it! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another fun cozy mystery in this series! I love these characters, and it was so fun being back with them. I will say, the mystery in here was a bit less cozy than I would have liked, especially when we got to the end to uncover who did the murder and why. But I loved how the heroine was roped into another murder mystery and the ghost was actually around a lot this time. And that end!? Where is the third book!?! I need more!!
I enjoyed this one a lot more than the first. The interaction between her and her aunts was more believable and less stressful. The ending hinted at another story and I’m looking forward to it.
“Memories should be cherished and embraced. Death can’t take those away.”
An easy, fun, murder mystery to get lost in during a cozy Autumn weekend. As far as a sequel goes, the characters seemed to get better and more intimate than Wallace's first in the series, and the ending had much more twists and memorable excitement. Indeed, while Brynn is still the titular character, backgrounds and the pasts of Aunt Izzy and Nora are delightfully provided, as well as that of their more-reclusive Warren brother, Uncle Gideon. With a sense of closure for those who have enjoyed strolling through the town of Evenfall, this novel yet again delivers with its ghosts, witchcraft, unique neighbors, sweets, poison, and the unlikely partnership of a Maine Coone and crow.
i liked the first one significantly more, but i loved the ending! the mystery in this one was better, but im very much a character-driven story type of gal. the atmosphere & coziness were still strong though so it's a high 3 stars for me
”I’ve come to realize something else. Just like my siblings couldn’t make me tell Harry the truth before it all went wrong, I can’t make you do what I think is best. There are some things we need to figure out on our own.”
PERSONAL SUMMARY When the Crow’s Away is the second book in the Evenfall Witches series, following the first book with just as much cozy charm, quirkiness, and fun mystery as the first. Unfortunately, the series is left incomplete (for the time being, I hope), meaning that I can’t return to this oh-so delightful world of the Warren witches. This book expanded on themes introduced in the first while adding some new elements to the mix, and it’s got such wonderful vibes for anyone looking for a magical, cozy mystery.
This book was sooo good! I may have shed a few tears. Brynn helps ghosts say goodbye to their loved ones, and even sometimes helps solve their murder. What a twist ending!! I never would have guessed the killer & oh my goodness, the way the book ended!!! I will be keeping an eye out for book 3.
I love this world, this town, these characters so so much, I can't even put it into words! This book for me is a 6 star read and I cannot wait to (hopefully) get a book 3 to this amazing series 🤍 till then I'll be reading Auralee's new book that comes out August 19th!
Happy/sad. Happy because this is my new favourite series. Sad because I'm all caught up and I don't know how long I'll have to wait for another book! Love the family dynamics, the magical aspects, and Brynn's continued journey through grief, A solid mystery with as many humourous moments as crime solving ones -- with a very unique approach to that crime solving which I appreciated. 'Dog' the Crow makes a great sleuthing sidekick for Brynn and the aunts are just as fractious and endearing as ever. I am completely in love with this series!
“When the Crow’s Away" by Auralee Wallace the 2nd instalment in the Evanfall Witches B&B Mystery series. I absolutely loved it! What a great follow up to book one.
The ghost of a recently deceased chocolatier believes he was murdered, and it's up to young witch Brynn Warren to use her magical gifts and old-fashioned sleuthing skills to find out how he really met his bitter end in this enchanting new Evenfall Witches B&B Mystery.
Oh my goodness, I love Dog the crow and how he was a big part of the story. Brynn learns more about her aunts and Gideon with respect to their first loves, and moving on with one’s life. I read in one day again much like book one I was pulled into the story right away.
I really enjoyed this book, there was Mystery as well as Magic! There were lots of twists, turns and I did not figure out whodunnit until Brynn did.
I highly recommend to fellow Cozy Mystery fans who enjoy a bit of magic and paranormal thrown in. Cant wait for book 3!
I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Berkley and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This series is just so charming and lighthearted. I really enjoyed the mystery and was pleasantly surprised by the twist. Now I really want book 3 to know more about Nixies brother
My first thought while reading the very first chapter of this book was wondering what kind of nosy bitches are those aunts?? How dare they go and tell Brynn she should try again at love because it’s not right she isn’t and she definitely misses it like what kind of weird bullshit? Also, so not your business who your niece shags???
I swear to god how is this even vaguely cosy? The poor thing is just slowly getting over seeing her husband dying of a heart attack in front of her eyes and idiot Izzie keeps pestering her to find another man because it’s impossible for a young woman to be happy and fine without love. I almost hurt my eyes rolling them so much at this 1950’s shit.
The book proceeds in such a weird direction after this, as the mystery is presented but there’s just too much of the soppy side of ghost whispering to literally anyone. The cosy vibes are not present and there’s barely any investigation
The magic side is not really emphasised as well. Brynn barely makes any magic, Izzie only bakes and her cookies put you in a good mood (but honestly, what cookies don’t?) and Nora casts one single spell, that goes wrong. We also discover that the memory spell on the neighbour didn’t work, making these three the worst witches to ever be and I don’t know why I should read about them. Especially from Brynn’s point of view, she is so damn boring! She is extremely passive, her voice is very meek and I get the feeling I know absolutely nothing about her and her personality.
The rest of the characters aren’t much better, starting with the whiny ghost and going into Nixie who I really don’t get. Why is Brynn helping her exactly?? Because she feels bad? I mean ok sad that Nixie is a sort of witch hunter and saw magic but always felt crazy, but this doesn’t mean you should show her that you are actually magic??? Literally the first rule is to not tell anyone you are a witch and you give some random person a real spell??? Couldn’t she give her a fake one? And I totally don’t get why Brynn is
I just don’t enjoy this series. I tried going past the first book thinking this might get better but I have to give up.
This is a 4.5 and a great follow up to the first book. Again I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying this book considering it’s more of an emotional mystery with paranormal/ghost elements and no law enforcer action. Shocking!!! Brynn continues to heal from her loss and is ready to help others. I like that the author gave her time to heal instead of rushing back into a bunch of ghost action.
The relationship between Bryn and her aunts is just hilarious and heartwarming. They are ready for her to move forward and while one is more overt in her actions, Nora tries the psychological route :). The family dynamics is just real, portraying the push and pull of relatives living and working together.
Brynn tries to help a ghost who first tells her he has been murdered but later she suspects is thwarting her efforts to solve the mystery surrounding his death. Brynn and her aunts uncover poisonous garden ( oh Nora), disastrous marriages, maybe stalkers, and 30 year secrets.
Along the way Brynn has to figure out what’s messing up her magic, what’s that weird feeling she’s getting, that pull she’s feeling? and that end … or rather is that new beginnings????
When the Crow’s Away continues the story of witchy B&B owner Brynn. Having recently revived her ability to talk to ghosts, Brynn is anxious to help a recently departed connect with a love one. Meanwhile, Brynn’s aunts are busy playing matchmakers, worried Brynn is lonely after the death of her husband a couple years ago.
Brynn hasn’t had much chance to use her magic until Mr. Sweete’s ghost shows up and insists he was murdered by the wife of his business partner. Brynn is determined to find out what happened to Mr. Sweete, even if it looks like he died from natural causes.
When the Crow’s Away is an enjoyable follow up to In the Company of Witches. Brynn continues to mature in both powers and character development. I love her tenacity and desire to help Mr. Sweete, including the sometimes hard lessons she endures along the way. The mystery has twists and turns and a satisfying conclusion.
One aspect of the story that I didn’t love was the aunt’s interference and insistence that she needs to move on from the loss of her husband. I became really annoyed at Izzy and her machinations to set up Brynn with any guy. Brynn is no longer so dark and down, and she participates in the day to day activities at the inn. Why does she need to be in love or have a man? I didn’t care for this message.
Narration: The story is shared via first person POV of Brynn. The narrator has a youthful, energetic voice that suits Brynn. She alters her voice based on gender and age for the dialogue of all other characters, making each unique. I was impressed with her performance of the two aunts: bold and gruff for Nora, while soft and soothing for Izzy. I really enjoyed how the narrator added effects to make voices that are far away sound as such etc.
Overall, I enjoyed my return visit to Evenfall and spending time with Brynn and her aunts. My early annoyances with the aunts and their matchmaking was put to rest as the story progressed. I look forward to finding out what the new man in town means for Brynn!
This series continues to be one of the best paranormal cozies I've ever read. It's a blend of autumnal, witchy vibes and a springtime setting, with plenty of loveable characters. Picture Practical Magic, but a cozy mystery. Brynn's aunts Nora and Izzy are such fun characters to spend time with (especially with their opposing personalities), and I loved learning more about their backstories in this installment.
Fun sophomore entry in its magical cozy series. I like Brynn and her aunts and uncle as well as the bed and breakfast setting. The pace is quick and keeps readers invested in the mystery throughout. The resolution of the murder is clever. There is a bit of a cliffhanger ending, and I cannot wait to read the next installment. Recommended to any paranormal reader.
