The Edge

Rate this book
Sometimes it’s easier to believe the lie. But is the truth right in front of you?

Everyone says Poppy jumped. My beautiful, creative sister, with her paint-splattered dresses and sunshine smile, took her own life. And I think they’re right. Until the day I speak to Daniel.

Everyone says his sister jumped too. But he has proof that she was pushed. And if she was, I have to ask myself: could the same thing have happened to Poppy? In the moments before she died, was she really calling me to say goodbye, or was she calling for my help? Was she really alone on that cliff edge?

When Poppy’s friends tell me she had a serious boyfriend, I feel like I’m losing my grip on reality. If they were so madly in love, wouldn’t she have told me? Wouldn’t there be pictures of them together? And when I find the silver heart necklace he gave her, I feel sick. It’s the same silver heart another murdered girl was given in the weeks before she died.

This can’t be a coincidence. Either I’ve lost my mind, or the man my darling sister loved killed her. And if he could charm his way into her life so easily, what’s to say he’s not already in mine?

Absolutely unputdownable!

One of the best thrillers I've ever read. I can't believe this is a DEBUT!!! So many genuinely surprising and gratifying twists.

This was WAY heavier than I expected. I knew it was about a murder thought to be a suicide, but there is a theme of suicide throughout the entire book. It's very dark, sad, and depressing. It was well written, if a bit too long, but definitely be aware going into it that it's more sad than thrilling. This was a wonderful debut. I'll definitely want to keep reading more from this author.

After her joyful but socially anxious sister Poppy commits suicide(she doesn't, and we know that from the prologue), Clementine devotes her time to volunteering at a suicide hotline. She's stayed near her parents instead of going back to her work as a scientist. She carries a lot of guilt because Poppy tried to call her before she died and Clementine didn't answer. She'll never forgive herself and doesn't think she deserves happiness.

When a call from another grieving sibling reaches her at the suicide hotline, it throws into question everything she thought she knew about her sister's death. Maybe it wasn't really a suicide. As she investigates, it seems that every obstacle is thrown in front of her which leads you to wonder.. is the killer already in her life?

This started off really well for me and I feel mean only leaving 3* but it got to be a bit too draggy in places and has taken me an absolute AGE to work my way through !! It was a Kindle First one I picked for October. It has actually taken me 3 weeks to read which has to be some sort of record. I've been working a lot of hours recently and that is chopping into my reading time, too, which also doesn't help matters as I only manage to cram a few pages in some nights. That isn't good as you lose your thread totally. I made a note 39% in that things were getting dragged out.
I didn't like Clementine a great deal, either, which didn't endear me to the book, since she was our main lead. The way she treated people, especially Jenna, was pretty bloody atrocious of her, grieving or not. No excuse for it in my opinion. Rude is rude, simple as that. And I didn't like her binning letters and drawings sent to her......thoughtless. The way she carries on and on and on about ignoring a final phonecall and feels SO terrible she does it to someone else as well !! Selfish, stupid cow !!
I liked the cover, too, BUT there are too many that look similar about. (A year or 2 ago it was a hooded man on every cover, then last year's favourite a woman in a red coat. This season's choice seems to be a woman in a yellow coat !! I remember I stopped downloading the-bloke-in-a-hoodie covers in the end as it didn't come across as anything original if the cover was going to be so samey as many others. Surely it can't only be me that has noticed this ??)
I loved the line Poppy's dad spoke at her funeral, "Ever since she learned to talk, she only said nice things..." That was sweet. The mention of hair growing I also found interesting and it stayed with me. Liam made me laugh out loud when he observed how well her help for Daniel was going !! I liked him a great deal. A line near the end about a triangle also had me decidedly sniffy.....
I spotted the odd missed-off apostrophe and she did commit the cardinal sin for me that I will always knock a star off for-getting your own character's name wrong. At one point she mentioned finding Rachel's friend online when she meant Poppy's friend. Any self-respecting editor ought to have spotted that one. Straightjacket is usually spelled straitjacket as well.
She mentioned a green dot next to a name on Whatsapp I spotted and said she knew someone was online but you get that on Facebook's nasty Messenger, not on Whatsapp. I wondered why she never checked Poppy's location history on her phone, too......only her social media accounts. She'd make a rubbish detective, that Clemmie !! Another odd line was somebody saying they had to "play an act" and the expression should really be play-act.
I would try another by her as this story was a good one but perhaps a little repetitive is all and it was a first novel. Plus, the author loves foxes and shares them on Twitter and I love them too, so she's definitely worth another look !!

Clemmie is struggling with the suicide of her sister. Poppy had tried to call her the night it happened and Clemmie had ignored the call. She cannot believe that her beautiful sister would do this.

Whilst Clemmie is volunteering at a suicide helpline Daniel calls to talk about the suicide of his sister, although he is adamant she was the victim of foul play and has proof that she was pushed. Could the same thing have happened to Poppy?

This story kept me hooked, I cannot believe this is the author's debut novel and I will be looking forward to her next book.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

Wow, I really can't belive that this is Lucy Goacher's first book. I really hope she has many more in her.It was fabulous, so gripping I didn't want to put it down. Just how many twists can you get in one book? You think the have the killer all worked out, but then a twist takes you away from that onto someone else. It could be any one of the five or so men that Clematine has got to know since coming back from her studies at Harvard University after finding out her sister had committed suicide.
Clematine is a scientist who love her life in Boston USA, her analytical mind make science her perfect subject, she has friends, a nice place to live and a good if infrequent social life, she also thinks she has found out where here heart lies after sleeping with her best friend and house mate.
However before she can process this, she is woken up the next morning by her phone ringing and it is her dad telling her that her sister has taken her own life. Chaos ensues as she rushes to pack, get a flight and heads back to England.
She cannot process the fact that her lovely, beautiful, artistic, shy and vunerable sister would do such a thing.
She ends up spending 6 months in the UK as she can't face going back. Meantime she volunteers at a help line for people who are bereaved, usually through suicide, There she meets Jude who is sympathetic, artistic and seemingly reliable. She also has a flat mate Liam who is outragously outgoing, and great fun but she spends a lot of her time in her room avoiding him, but he wants to help her too. Alexander is the strange but sweet man in the flat opposite, he is very mysterious and has a flatmate who plays computer games all day whilst listening to very loud music, he spends most of his days in Clematine's parents cafe to get away from the noise, when he finds out she is a scientist, he says that is his interest too and is forever popping cutting from magazines etc through her letterbox, and bumping into her offering her tickets to the cinema etc.
Daniel is a caller to the help line, whose sister also committed suicide 2 years ago, but he can't accept that she did that and feels she was murdered, he has a blurry image of a hand pushing her onto the train tracks on the night she died on his phone, take from some CCTV camera. He has been trying to prove the murder but the police won't listen to him, he has a breakdown, tries to kill himself and is committed to a mental health unit for a while.
All these people are playing their part in making Clemantine think that maybe her sister was murdered and she increasing feels that at least one of these men were involved, but which one??
Read the book and you will find out. You will also enjoy the book very much.

Please Lucy Goacher write some more like this, I can't wait

Who pushed her sister...and is she next?

“I didn’t check the voicemail until the next morning, after I already knew she was dead. The sound of it taunts me again: wind on a phone receiver; the churning of waves. Silence.
Whatever she wanted to say to me, she never got the chance. Her last words died with her.”

This is a debut? Seriously? But it is soooo good! THE EDGE has all the hallmarks of an accomplished writer who has already made their mark on the genre. It is gripping, it is intense, it is pacy and it is skillfully plotted with twists and red herrings that leave you questioning who to trust...

Clementine Harris has returned from her studies in the US after the death of her sister Poppy, whose body was found on the beach below Hope Gap after a dogwalker came across her phone and backpack on the cliff's edge. An open and shut case, Poppy's death was ruled as a suicide. And Clementine accepts that but she blames herself. Because Poppy had tried three times to contact her on that last day and she ignored all of her attempts. What if she could have stopped her? What did she want to say in that last phone call before she jumped? She will never know because she never answered it.

So now, Clementine volunteers at a helpline for those who want to talk, who need to talk, to help talk them down from the edge. To be there, to be a voice in the night (or day) at the other end of a phone...to listen. If she couldn't do that for Poppy, at least she can do that for someone else. It's there she meets fellow helpline colleague Jude, who sketches out his callers as he pictures them whilst talking to them. He is sympathetic and caring but Clementine tend to shut down to the hands of friendship extended to her. She does with housemate Liam, with his exuberant pink hair, who does everything in his power to get her out of herself and to live!

She gets a call one night from a man whose sister had died two years before, having been ruled as a suicide. But he believes different. He knew his sister and she was murdered. But no one believes him, no one will listen to him writing him off as delusional. And now he can't imagine a life without his sister in it. But at the other end of the line, Clementine tries her best to talk him down...and fails. Or at least, she thinks she has. But if someone has decided to take their lives, they have already made that decision and nothing you can say will change that. But Clementine feels this failure as much as she did when she heard of Poppy's suicide.

When the inquest draws a line under Poppy's death, ruling it as suicide, Clementine thinks that's it. She had expected closure but all she has are more unanswered questions. She takes herself off to a suicide bereavement support group where she meets newcomer Daniel. And something in him, and his story, resonates with her. This chance meeting then throws into question everything she thought she knew about Poppy's death. Maybe Poppy didn't take her life. Maybe she was pushed... And if she was, then who pushed her? And why? What did sweet, sunny, smiling Poppy do to make someone want to kill her?

So Clementine and Daniel go in search of answers into their respective sisters' deaths to see if they can dig up any new information, anything that will cast doubt to it being suicide and pointing towards murder. Someone somewhere must have seen something, known something...surely? But as she investigates it seems every obstacle is being thrown in her path, which begs the question...does she know the killer already?

For the rest of my life, I won't be able to trust any man – because any man could be him."

If this is indeed fact...then who could he be?

THE EDGE is an intense psychological thriller that is at times heavy in subject matter. The story unfolds from Clementine's perspective with the odd inclusion of a random woman that will all make sense by the end. It begins with Poppy in the prologue with various others peppered throughout. Who are these women and what do they have to do with the story? Well, it's not hard to figure out but it does add another dimension to an already complex mystery.

There are a handful of characters within Clementine's life that could be the villain and, as a scientist who deals in hard facts, she carefully and methodically lists everything surrounding Poppy's death and gathers whatever evidence she can. But the closer she gets the more obstacles in her path. And pretty soon, she begins to doubt just about everyone. She can't trust any of them because it could be any of them!

As readers, we are given a handful of suspects and by a process of elimination, are we able to figure it out? I had two solid suspects, owing to Clementine's theory about the killer - which I won't reveal but it does give you cause to really look at everyone. And it was by that theory that I eliminated one of them on that very basis. But it did ruin the twist at the end that I had already figured out by this point. Lucy Goacher threw in a ton of red herrings to throw you off track but I would not be swayed.

THE EDGE is compelling and complex but an addictive read that will have you turning the pages. My only complaint is that it was a little long and dragged a little in places but as a debut, it totally rocks. I felt the similarities to John Marrs' "The Good Samaritan" in part, particularly with the mention of Beachy Head (a paramount location to Marrs' climax) and yet it was different. The chemistry between Clementine and each of the male counterparts was intense. Even the scenes with her parents were.

Overall, THE EDGE is fantastic debut psychological thriller. It is addictive, complex, dark, gripping, intense...everything I love in a thriller. I'd certainly be interested to see what the author offers us next.

I would like to thank #LucyGoacher, #Netgalley and #AmazonPub for an ARC of #TheEdge in exchange for an honest review.

thought I’d sussed it

It took me a while to start enjoying this book, it seemed quite basic at first, maybe a first novel. Then it began to ramp up a bit and draw me in but then, wham, I thought I’d sussed it, it was obvious, so this then became a bit of reading for the sake of reading to prove I was right. Then I wasn’t right, I’d fallen into the same trap!
Good story but I did feel the middle bit left me feeling a bit as though I’m just reading to finish it but only because I had no idea what was coming

This book was well written and the plot was an interesting idea. But, I found the first couple of chapters rather tedious and slow. The pace did quicken and in places it was a compelling read but I didn’t warm to the main character, finding her irritating and self absorbed.

Ugh, very torn in my rating. I feel like the length of this novel could have been cut in half and would have been a good novel. Liked the storyline but had a hard time staying engaged. The first 1/4 of the novel was SO repetitive. I also didn’t seem to like the main character, Clementine.

*suicide is a major part of this novel so if that’s a trigger, this novel is not for you.

PUBLICATION DAY: November 1, 2022

Poppy’s body was found by dog walkers early one morning; her death ruled a suicide. Clementine shoulders the blame for this terrible occurrence, not picking up her younger sister’s call on the night it happened, convinced she could have made a difference if only she’d answered. Grief stricken and unbearably guilt ridden, Clementine devotes her time to a suicide hotline, vowing to be there for anyone else in the same situation. But when Clementine meets Daniel, whose sister also died under debatable circumstances, she begins to have doubts. Was someone else responsible for Poppy’s death? Will her question lead to salvation? Or more guilt…

PROS and CONS:
Very, very good for a debut novel! Clementine is a great main character (smart, sensitive, striving for redemption.) Her determination to get to the bottom of her sister’s death is admirable, and I liked the plethora of suspects to choose from. It gets a little bogged down in the middle, with some repetition in the investigation (notice the necklace already!), but overall it was quite good.

READ IT?
If you’re looking for…a fast paced look into a possible murder, then this one’s for you!

"For the rest of my life, I won't be able to trust any man – because any man could be him."
I feel you, girl, I feel you.

This book was insane. Breathtaking. Hilarious at times. Scary because even though this is fiction, it could be happening somewhere in the world and we wouldn’t even know.
It was really unputdownable - I had to read it in 3 or 4 days because I didn’t have free time but if I had, I would have finished it immediately the same day I started. The plot was intense, the characters were intense. And the chemistry between them? You guessed it - intense.
Not sure what to say about it more because it literally left me speechless. I think it might be one of my new faves, actually. And the fact that this was a debut novel makes it even better. Loved it. Would read it again. Can’t wait for the next thriller Lucy Goacher writes!

As a debut thriller, this is a pretty good effort.

It’s about a young woman trying to find out what happened to her sister, Poppy, who apparently jumped to her death from a cliff.

But when she encounters Daniel, another bereaved relative who claims his sister was murdered and the death covered up to look like suicide, the two of them team up to find out the truth.

It was one of those books where my wife, Amanda, and I disagreed. She loved it from start to finish, and couldn’t rip through the pages fast enough.

By contrast, I found the first half of the book slow and plodding, with too much introspection and not enough action for a taut thriller.

The second half is much better, in my opinion, and Goacher pulls off a convincing twist as she guides you through the final whodunnit to identify the murderer.

It just felt a little long to me and could have benefited from a judicious edit.

However, still a solid four-star read.

*4 Stars*

This was a really heavy book. Themes of suicide. The story is based around finding out the truth about what happened to Poppy, our main character Clementine's sister. She's believed to have committed suicide, but there are things that lead Clem to believe thats not at all what happened. What ensues is quite the mystery full of odd turns, plenty of surprises and an ending that I didn't expect.

TW: suicide

WOW! The topic of this book is so heavy, but I think the author managed it in a respectful way. That ending!

Disclaimer: I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I loved this book. I started it last night and couldn’t put it down!

I read and watch a lot of horror, thriller, and mystery. I knew it was 1 person and that they changed their looks. I knew who it was. It never impacted my enjoyment as I was reading. The why was the part that kept me turning that page.

Oooooh girl. I loved the why and the ending. Just read it. 5*.

This was a great read right from the start. It was brooding and creepy at times and I throughly enjoyed this one. It was a great ending and I raced through this one. Highly recommend. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

loved it

This book was amazing. It kept me guessing the whole time. Every time I thought I knew what was happening/who the bad guy was…I was wrong and back to guessing again!
