Detective Inspector Mark Olbeck and his partner have their day rudely interrupted when they witness a group of men attacking another in the street. Arrests are made but DI Kate Redman and the other officers of the Abbeyford police force are intrigued by their motive.
The dark side of vigilantism is revealed when a body is found, and the laptop of the victim reveals some true horror. But is this a simple case of a paedophile hunter’s quest gone wrong? Or is there something more to this murder?
Who is the real victim here? Kate, already struggling with a life-changing decision, has to draw on all her experience, wisdom and courage as she and her colleagues hunt a ruthless killer…
I’ve been trying to get published as a writer since…. um… er…um…see, it was that long ago I can’t remember. A long time. I make it fifteen years and counting….
I’ve also been writing for as long as I can really remember. I wrote my first story, The Blue Ruby, when I was about seven (if I can find that deathless prose scribbled in an exercise book somewhere, I might upload it here for a bit of light relief). Throughout college and university, I experimented with screenplays and scripts (I was studying Film and English at the time at the University of East Anglia), as well as other more short stories. In my twenties, I started my first novel, finished it, then my second, then my third. In my thirties, I was slightly side-tracked by the birth of my son but, leaving aside that trifling distraction, managed to write my fourth..
I didn’t bother trying to get the first novel published as I saw it as more of a practise run at this business of being an author. With the second, I entered the 2004 Lit Idol competition and got to third place. That was my ticket to publication, I thought, surely? Hah! Just the first in a long line of disappointments, of which every writer must be familiar… hopes built up to then be smacked down again. I had an agent approach me after the competition and on their encouragement, I finished, edited and polished the manuscript, sent it off to them with happy hopes – to be told months later that they didn’t think it was quite right for them..
Gutted, but enthusiasm relatively undimmed, I started on a new novel, inspired in part by the dramatic events of 2005 – the London bombings. I also wrote a short story at the same time on the same subject – it was on my mind a lot that summer (unsurprisingly. Freedom Fighter is the story – available on Amazon as part of The Mourning After short story collection). This novel The House on Fever Street (written under my maiden name Celina Alcock) was shortlisted for the 2006 Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger Award. Aha, I thought, a fairly prestigious and industry recognised award. This will get me published. Did it? Did it buggery!.
The House on Fever Street was also longlisted in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award of that year, which garnered me some nice reviews and a much needed ego boost but didn’t advance my career as a published author much further..
So what next for our doughty heroine? She ups and writes her fourth novel, gains an agent and thinks now, now I have finally made it as a published author! And she waits. And waits. And waits some more. And then waits a bit more. And a bit more. Finally, for variety, she waits a bit more..
So, after two years of waiting, reading about self-publishing on Amazon and other platforms, I believe a phrase that ends in ‘…for a game of soldiers’ passed my lips and I decide to publish myself. So I did. And here I am on Amazon, making sales. No publisher. No agent. Just me..
Vigilantes, pedophiles, murder, suicide and blackmail keep DI Kate Redman busy in this 14th outing. And on the personal level, she and husband, Anderton, are fully-engaged in Operation Baby.
This 14th entry in a most excellent series continues the tradition of topical plots, tight writing, dimensional characters (even the secondary ones), snappy dialogue, and well-described settings. I was hooked from the opening and surprised by the ending.
These can be read out of order - I must admit it’s been some time since I’ve read a Kate Redman, but the author is skilled at dropping in backstory in a way that doesn’t bog the current plot down, so I was able to catch up quickly. I still advocate for them in order – I became attached quickly to Kate in the first book; she was someone I could root for, and watching her grow and progress in her career was most satisfying.
I highly recommend this series and will be eagerly awaiting the next entry.
In Celina Grace's new book 'Hunt', Kate Redman needs to disentangle the complex web of a crime that began rather tamely, but leads the investigation into the affairs of families, big corporations, and traumatized victims. The investigation is intricate and intense and, although the reader is made aware of every step of progress Kate and her team are making, the resolution at the end is logical, but not necessarily expected. I was certainly captivated all the way to the end. The case touches on child sexual abuse and -pornography, both from the sides of the abuser and the victim, so be aware of these possible triggers! In the midst of trying to solve this seemingly unsolvable case, Kate is struggling to conceive; but is she really sure about bringing another child into a world full of sexual predators, into a world fraught with the effects of rising crime and global weather changes; is it fair to a child? In spite of her personal preoccupation, Kate pushes herself to the limits to solve the crimes. I found her identifiably human - haven't we all had to struggle with personal decisions and problems whilst performing an important role elsewhere? This is another Kate Redman mystery you don't want to miss! Since the book also works very well as a stand-alone, it is really for every crime novel lover - very much recommended!
After an apparent "sting" to catch a pedophile turns into a bashing of the target DI Kate Redman and her team investigate all the people involved. However, the suspect is found dead, and it's believed to be a suicide until the autopsy indicates otherwise. There are several twists and turns with unexpected results. Kate does the usual superb job of sifting through all of the evidence to find the killer.
I have been a fan of Celina Grace for many years. She has believable characters that readers become attached to. While this was excellent in terms of plot and hidden clues to keep the reader engaged in the mystery, the cast of supporting characters has become so large as to become burdensome. My biggest objection was the inclusion of every social justice issue you can think of as well. There were so many side issues to drag you off the topic of solving the crime. I read for pleasure, and although I enjoyed the mystery aspect very much, I don't think the book, as a whole, was as good as her others. I do recommend the Kate Redman series for anyone who likes mysteries or police procedurals. There is no graphic sex, violence or bad language.
The books containing the character Kate Redman are the “ crème de la crème “ of police procedural books. I apologize to other authors but when a new book, such as this, comes along i simply HAVE to consume it . It’s of the Agatha Christie level of crime fiction. Always exciting, always engaging. Once I start I HAVE to finish. There is a continuous update of Kate’s private and professional life, as in the earlier books she was a police sergeant but now is an Inspector. Other than those two progressing facts each story is an exciting murder mystery. The characters feel so real and believable and I personally am part of the investigation for each book. This is the best of the best in this genre and I have no hesitation in recommending this to read. I was totally enthralled as I’m sure you will be. If you are new to Celina Grace and Kate Redman books it’s best to start at book 1 to get the full flavor of how the characters gel and grow with each other. ( I hasten to add they can be read as a standalone as well).
I was so excited to be back in Abbeyford with Kate, Theo, Anderton, Olbeck and the team that I just jumped right in and it was a great time! As always, Kate and friends have a complicated case ahead of them but it’s in the story and the process that the real excitement exists. Each character adds great depth to the story both in solving the mystery and as part of the team and their personal lives. I feel that I have watched these characters grow into the fine people they are and knowing their backgrounds only enhances the book. At this point, having finished Book 14, so many cases and so much character development leads to a great read, but I do think the book can be enjoyed as a standalone. I do, however, recommend the entire series highly! I am rushing right over to download the next installment as I realized I am a few books behind. Read and enjoy this wonderful book!
Celina Grace does a fantastic job with her Kate Redman series. I have been waiting for a new book in this series for quite a while and Hunt did not disappoint!
The mystery was hard to figure out, as always, and the characters are wonderful. I love that Ms. Grace has the characters grow and change from book to book. There were a lot of great personal growth changes in Hunt and I was totally into it.
If you're looking for a great British police procedural, look no further! This is your series!
Thank you to the author and publisher for an ARC at my request. All thoughts gratefully shared because I loved this book.
Kate Redmond is called to suspected suicide that winds up being “suspicious” and connected to a vigilante pedophile hunter case she is also working on.
This is a good story that while it touches on some difficult subjects, does not contain any actual references or descriptions.
Kate is also going through some personal things in her life that may change her life forever.
For those who like romance?
Celina Grace has woven in some things that will make most of her fans happy in that since.
D.I. Kate Redman is called out to the apparent suicide of divorced businessman Oliver Webster. But it is suspicious. With conflicting information how will the team find the motive and the killer. For so long the case seems to be at a stand still. Then there is another suicide. Is there a connection between the cases. An entertaining, well-crafted and well-written modern mystery with its cast of varied and likeable characters. Another good addition to this enjoyable series. I received a free copy of this book from the author via BooksFunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Another thoroughly enjoyable book from Celina Grace continuing the story of Kate Redman and her police colleagues in Abbeyford.
Celina is very good at weaving the personal lives of the main characters around the various murders, disappearances and other intrigues that take place in and around the town of Abbeyford. The lives of Kate, Anderton and Mark Olbeck have each moved on and it’s great to see their development throughout the series.
This particular storyline was very interesting and well researched. Thank you Celina for yet another gem.
Another page-turner in the Kate Redmon Mystery series. Kate is such an interesting character with a complicated personal life. I'm so glad Kate and Anderton have got their relationship on track. This was another intriguing set of cases for Kate and her colleagues to figure out. Vigilantes, pedophiles, murder, suicide, and blackmail. These books are always so involved that I have to pay close attention to all the clues in order to keep up with the unfolding story. I enjoy the mental gymnastics. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Well now that was a tangled web with a few extra bites… This series gets more intriguing with each new mystery. Great characters wonderfully gripping and thrilling mysteries set in an enjoyable setting that certainly keeps me coming back time and time again. Kate Redman is a truly amazing DI puzzling out murder after murder with her fantastic team. Kate has an amazing partner and soon to have more dreams come true.
Another great book from Celina Grace in the Kate Redman series. Great police procedure! As she becomes involved in another mystery, we continue to follow Kate in her personal life with her former boss, and the series just keeps getting better. So well-written, and the characters are very believable. Thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC.
Once again Celine Grace has outdone herself. It has been a while since I read her last book. I was really glad to find her new book. The characters were well written, and the book had all the excitement I have been expecting. I found myself feeling as if my friends were back. Great story and I can hardly wait for the next one.
I have really enjoyed this series. I like series where the characters learn grow and change over the length of the books. And Kate has certainly changed and grown. You can pick up any one of these books and enjoy the mystery. However, reading them in order you see the depth of the characters. Well written, enjoyable mystery, and great characters tick all my boxes.
Hunt: Kate Redman #14. At first I was a bit confused. It seemed like parts were left out or the line of thought was abandoned. Then the threads all came together and bang the race to the end both professional, to solve the murders, and personal. I love the way Celina Grace's writing has developed over the years. Thank you for another wonderful story!
Great storytelling with a brilliant plot and clever characters. Suspenseful, and often twisted plots that deal with current newsworthy topics, but addressed without graphic description and gore. Well done!
I will always enjoy reading this series about the personal lives of the main characters, but the police mystery in this one was just not that well-defined. It was a short and quick read, and I am onto the next one.
Such a great addition to the series. I love the characters and the story line. The little side stories add to the fun. I also enjoy their thought processes as they work out whodunnit.
Once again the author did an amazing job with this book. Kate is fantastic at her job. As usual there is always twists and turns that keeps you guessing. The more books, the happier I am.
Once again Celina Grace give us another page turning detective mystery novel. “Hunt” deals with a major impact theme, pedophilia. When a group called Bite Back, vigilantes targeting kids abusers, is accidentally found by Detective Inspector Mark Olbeck beating a man, the reality of abuses takes the Abbeyford police force aback. In the meantime, a suicide for apparently mysterious reasons take place. But nothing is really how it seems and once again DI Kate Redman will be involved in a series of twist and turn of events in which, once again, she will need to face the truly dark side of the human race.
Celina Grace is getting back to her best with Hunt, the 14th book featuring Kate Redman. I still wish she could find a way to get Anderton back into the Police, but I suppose that is too much to hope for. Anyway, back to this book. At first it all felt a little light, but once the investigation got going the story was really enjoyable.
