Alpha's Alpha

Torn Between Two Lovers, Feeling Like A Fool

Abby Stafford, new Alpha of the Hat Island Pack, has a lot to deal with. The serum the Hat Island Pack has developed will save the lives of shifter girls everywhere — and change the world forever, if the Pack can survive long enough to get it into production.

And she's been a wolf for all of a month. She's in love with her Second in command. And they're scrambling to make a real shifter community on Hat Island, hopefully with some income-producing businesses.

But someone is gunning for the pack— trying to stop the serum, trying to prevent Abby from being alpha. In the last month there have been seven attempts on her life.

Then someone makes a run at the Tanaka Pack Alpha in Seattle — and the only way to save his life is through a mate bond. Abby knows realistically that Hat Island won't last two weeks with Tanaka's support and backing. And she's aware of her own growing feelings for the man. Why wouldn't she want him? He was urbane, polished, intelligent....
But she loves Jake, her Second. Jake says she doesn't have to choose. She can have both.

She doubts it's as simple as that, but there's not much time, and very little choice. So another new thing in the shifter world: two alphas mated.

She hopes they all survive it.

Book 2 in the new urban adventure series, Wolf Harbor.

4.5 ⭐️

As a naturally dominant woman, this series speaks to me in ways that very few books do.

Like so many good stories, the author asked herself “what if”.

The FMC is my new favorite of all time.

One word. STUNNED.

Objectively, this is a five star read. Great writing, great characters, the plot gave what it needed to give. However, my whole body was crawling post finishing this bc the content was v v jarring.

So, I will not be continuing this series.

I’m currently in my badass heroine era. Whether it’s physical or mental power and skill, any kind of strength displayed or even hinted at is a huge factor in picking up a new read & so book 1 did just that for me. I enjoyed it for it’s creativity, it’s characters, plot & even its romance. However, I feel as if book 2 took all that & tossed it over a cliff. In part bc of who I am & in part bc 80% of the content was triggering.

I am going to leave this unrated bc I rate based on a combination of enjoyment factor & an objective (I try) view on the authors writing, character development, plot & so on. So, while parts of this book was enjoyable it felt tooooo real.

Also, I felt betrayed by the main character about 25-30% in. Its not often I am so sucked in like that emotionally bc some parts of this hurt so much I cried (not like water having a roll down my cheeks, but a sob out, proper body wracking sobs). I cried bc I thought the fmc & I were in alignment in our thinking (this is getting weird but bear w me) & to face the fact that we weren’t, cut deep 🥺

Then, the introduction of Abby in a polyamorous relationship was sort of a blow. There was no easing in, just straight up thrust in & as the reader I was there like “hellllooo what’s happening?” I probably would have gone w the flow butttttttttt bloody Tanaka.

Tbh, I would have been able to give this 5 ⭐️ for it’s almost academic & intellectual portrayal of fictional (lol) shifter culture - past, present & future. But the betrayals kept coming. Tanaka’s betrayal hurt almost as much bc he took trust that was shaky already & disregarded it & in my head I’m like “Abby this is the man you’re attracted to?” Sigh

Then came things that were described within shifter culture that made me sick. I just couldn’t after that. I finished bc I felt a sense of obligation to see it through & I still sort of wanted to continue to like Abby

But damn I wonder at the authors aims in her depiction of graphic content bc it’s one thing to describe actions, another thing entirely to ascribe emotion to it. I think it made my reading experience painful and more sensitive, if that makes sense.

After reading I found that I was sad at the bleak world the author is building, anger at the author but I don’t know why yet & bruised in my emotions at somethings I feel like I ‘witnessed’ (that might be because the book is written like an anthropological study)

So I can’t rate this book bc I didn’t enjoy it. It made me sad & angry. Doesn’t mean it wasn’t good objectively, am I making sense? Sigh it just wasn’t up my alley

However & this is a huge however. I loved the author’s writing, for me, her writing engaged all parts of my brain lol (& while that can exhausting esp if you read her books back to back) it was v v stimulating for me. It felt like I was learning and engaging in my hobby at the same time lol so the lack of rating is not a depiction of this author’s skill but bc the content was so jarring to me that I couldn’t decide if I hated or liked the book

I might revisit my earlier stance on not continuing the
series

Edit - 01 May 2023
I was randomly thinking about this book & I suddenly thought that I probably shouldn’t judge Abby as harshly for what felt like a betrayal towards Jake. Don’t get me wrong, I’m annoyed that the Tanaka plot line came into play but I realize she’s over 50 & can do wtv she likes lol. She’s had a lifetime of listening & playing along w societal rules so her polyamory can continue but I’m still mad at the whol Tanaka bit. (If that wasn’t clear already lol)

Enlightening

Unless this is your first shifter read, you have had plenty of books that tried to give you a path of determination in how a pack should be. This book will completely set your shifter beliefs in a tornado to see what spins out and what is kept.
This gives a whole new perspective and food for thought all the while keeping things in the semi- here and now.
I have been thrilled to pieces to watch the growth of the characters and the addition of others.
No spoilers so I will conclude with saying that this isn’t as graphic as others but you may want to keep in the private section of your library.

OMG- a female alpha that takes no crap

And she is creating- well, I don’t want to give anything away. But readers- the main character is a post- menopausal woman that leads. Amen.

Abbey Stanford is a most unusual heroine.

Akihira and Jake are both loved by Abby and are loved with her. She's a new breed and hopes to make life better for shifters but also to keep the shifters from extinction.

Wow!!

This story just keeps getting better and better! Betrayal, violence and love all come together in a story for the ages. I am in love with this saga. The author has done an amazing job of combining lore and fiction together. I am so intrigued by the story and the anthroponology that this book shows. The story of ancient cultures has opened my eyes and interest in where we come from and where we are going. But, it is also a story of love and figuring out where we belong in this world. Very exciting and action packed.

Wolfe Harbor

Spellbinding; loved the take of middle age transformation. Challenging to continue reading when I want to research the theories on cultural isolation. This series just hits me on so many levels. Congrats to the author on creating a series of such depth.

Good story and continued character development

The depth of the characters and the story told continue to keep my attention. I’m delighted with the insights and how they connect in this world. What I find especially connecting is that these characters are not perfect and that only makes them more real. They have their flaws … but then so does anyone who is a real person.

Alpha's Alpha

Book two of Wolf Harbor. Oh are these books good! Wolf shifter society from the POV of an older female who just happens to be alpha. Mind now, she is a made wolf, not a born wolf. The interactions between Jake and Abby, between all the other wolves is very well done. I really care about this society, about these people.

Interesting fantacy.

This is an interesting fantacy. Many of the questions about posed are valid for our current real life society. Of course the villains are a little off the wall but that is part of the fun.

I am seriously enjoying this series. There is so much depth in Abby, the lead character. The story opens up possibilities that include hope. With all the ideas introduced, you'd think the book would be boring. BUT it is not!! I can't wait to read #3.

this one was wild!

Holy crap! This was a wild ride! I love Abby so much! Their world needed her so badly! Why are these male shifters so closed minded? And horrible? Even Tanaka has some issues and he’s one of the good ones. Man. I’m gonna hold off on reading the next book for a minute cause I need to decompress. Such a good story tho.

Very good, but grim

This second book is compelling, but not as comfortable as the first. There is a lot of evil in the world, and Abby, first female Alpha of a pack, is taking it on personally. Contains polyamory, philosophy, anthropology, violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking.

Equality is the strongest

Individualism, power over others, subjugation of differences - it's not working. Stories of ideas and ideals to hope for is what LD Breedlove gives here. If traditional religion no longer aspires us to behave better, we need stories of hope for stronger virtues - like equality and respect.

Learning experience

I love reading a book that has more the a story, and Alpha's Alpha and this series is that kind of reading experience. It appeals to the want age anthropologist in me.

Even better than the first book

I generally don't like books that have any socially redeeming values; I'm all about the fluff. This book is not fluff. It has humor and fun stuff, but touches some deeper things. I'm glad there are many more.

I enjoyed this 2nd book in the series and looking forward to the next one. It's such a different story line to anything I've ever found. I love that it's based on women's empowerment but how women can rule differently and doesn't HAVE to be a b*tch. Will move onto next one in the series.

Graphic and detailed violence of all types

I loved the first book. But this had way too much graphic and detailed violence, physical , sexual and mental. It was repetitive and overdone-how many times can we hear the same misogynistic phrases? While the book still has questions and strategy, the needless violence overlays it too much. Will not be reading any further.

Second book in series. 3rd person pov following various characters, sometimes difficult to follow. Detailed, graphic and pointless violence. Mildly steamy.

Great Series!

These two books really made me think. The storyline is fascinating and who wouldn’t want to live 200+ years. I really liked Abby but I wanted to see Jake become her mate! L.J. Breedlove made Abby, Jake, Cujo, Benny and all the other characters seem so real. This is the second time I’ve read this duet. They will go on my reread list and I will likely read them every few years, again and again.

Once again, a strong female character accepts abuse because "they're in love" and "that's just how he is." The implication that non-consensual sexual activity is acceptable because it's part of werewolf culture, and Abby just needs to learn to understand it is really skeevy, especially in what's marketed as a feminist werewolf book.
