The author and I are the same age. I grew up with a mother similar to hers with deep Southern tendencies (and she could cook like nobody I ever saw). But I grew up in both Mississippi and South Carolina, and the tone of these stories ring so true to me. Oh my goodness, they brought back some tender memories of my own. I have spent a lot of time on Johns Island, in the agriculture community, and until reading Jane's book, didn't even correlate that I'd met her daddy on his tomato farm. But that time period of the South is gone, I guess like most time periods do, they disappear into history, but I read every story in this book, most of them touching upon a memory of my own.
Jane Jenkins Herlong can capture what's unique about the south and the people who are graced to be born there. This easy read had so many funny little stories that I found myself waiting for my husband to get home to share each night. From her mother saying 'CPAP smear' instead of 'CPAP machine' to her grandma's hair so stiff her grandsons put golf tees in it, I laughed out loud several times. This book could easily be a movie. I will pass this book to my aunt, who lived in Tennessee for several years and will delight in these stories!
Absolutely delightful reading. Jane Herlong is a very gifted story teller as she writes of her memories with humor, mixed with wisdom. She describes her characters with southern wit and charm, yet relatable to all her readers regardless of geographic background. She inspires us to see the humor in our own lives.
“Sweet Tea Secrets,” is Jane’s gift of exquisite graphics and touching stories that is wrapped up in southern elegance and humor. Also, as a southerner, I love how she represents our way unique way of life with respect and charm.
I bought this book after hearing JJH’s interview on Jenna Ellis’ radio program on AFR! This fun Christian lady has lots of colorful stories illustrating the importance of humor! I’m giving copies to my de-ah southern friends!
Grab a tall glass of tea and settle into your favorite spot under the magnolia, because once I started reading, I couldn’t put this book down. Jane is a masterful storyteller who transported me back to a simpler, sweeter time in the South. This book, brimming with sweet sentiments and witty anecdotes, masterfully weaves Biblical truths throughout. I even found myself craving Southern delicacies such as pecan pie and wishing I could've sampled Tootsie's biscuits.
If you're a lover of all things Southern or wish you were born below the Mason-Dixon, Sweet Tea Secrets from the Deep-Fried South is a must have for your coffee table or home library. Jane's stories will put a smile on your face and a song of hope in your heart.
