When she’s taken prisoner by the enemies of her people, her elven captor is the only person standing between her and death at the hands of his bloodthirsty kin...
Novikke has no love for night elves. Her people and theirs have been at odds for centuries thanks to the elves’ penchant for violence and hatred of humans.
So when she’s caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and taken captive by a night elf warrior, she has little hope for mercy, especially since they don’t even speak the same language. Trapped in his unforgiving homeland, a vast forest of shadows and magic, she’ll have to rely on her wits and her sword in order to survive.
But she never expected her captor to be so devastatingly attractive. Or so polite. As Novikke begins to see him in a new light, she starts to question everything she thought she knew about his mysterious people… and she’s beginning to think that he feels the same troublesome attraction between them that she does.
Now, as a deadly magic and the threat of war loom, they are forced to decide where their loyalties truly lie. With the fate of their nations in their hands, will they betray their own people to protect each other?
An enemies to lovers high fantasy romance for readers who love worldbuilding, action and adventure, spice, and HEAs.

I wanted to give it one star. Why? Because it was boring af. Then why did I gave it two? Because I liked the worldbuilding. That's it. Lame protagonist, boring ass night elf, too few action scenes. Unfortunately, I won't continue the series.
Sorry is a no for me. I made it as far as 42% but this book was boring. like literally they spent all of this time just waking in the forest. Is there even a plot in this book? humans against elves? what is goin on ?what's the story? characters are boring. they don't even talk, I get they both speak different languages , but this whole time just telling they walk in the forest, they sleep and cross old bridges doesn't make it any interesting. I had high hopes because I play WOW and I play a Night Elf and I love Night Elves so I thought this might be a WOW fan and wrote a book based on the Nelves.
The writing of the author was a bit difficult to get used to. Very straight forward. But overall had a really good story line. The night elves capture a human, who all seem to be in a war with eachother, Including the sun elves. Night and day. I’m curious to see where the characters will be in book 2 since this book ended with and interesting twist.
I couldn't finish at 25%. Overabundance of starting sentences with "But," "And" and "Maybe." Most sentences were so short, I was reminded of the books my 7 year old daughter reads: "My cat is bad. He scratches the chair. My mom is mad." Paragraphs were very short, and a new one started while still on the same topic as the previous. This pattern made it challenging for me to remain oriented to the story.
Night Elves Of Ardani had so much potential but for me just didn’t quite hit the mark. Sadly there was a lack of world building, character development and interesting plot. There were a handful of elements that had me intrigued but sadly never expanded upon. Especially a book about Elves I was truly hoping for some illustrious lore and characters that hooked onto my heart for years to come.
The cover is what drew me to this series and sadly it just did not deliver.

That's about all I can say, unfortunately. This book was incredibly uninteresting and flat. The main character has no personality or identity. Nothing motivated the reader to continue past the first chapter or two. The relationship is boring and tense and unsatisfying. And when they do get around to showing any physical connection, its wholly unfulfilling and flat.
Thank you to booksirens and the author, Nina K. Westra, for providing a copy of Captive (Night Elves of Ardani book 1). I have reviewed honestly.
Captive features, but is not limited to, the following themes: ○ New adult ○ Fantasy ○ Elves ○ Enemies to lovers ○ Language barriers ○ Stockholm Syndrome
My overall rating for Captive …
5 Stars!
This little book is huge on fascination! Captive is a fast paced, new adult fantasy adventure, with wonder, action and a tantalising, enemies to lovers trope. I really enjoyed the language barrier between our two main characters, this adding intrigue and intensity to their forbidden feelings. The world building was exquisite and the plot was dicey, fun and whimsical. I honestly cannot fault this little beauty of a book! Fans of Sarah J Maas will devour this series!
Captive is a New Adult/Fantasy novella featuring elven warriors, mythical monsters and a brush of magic.
When Novikke, a human in the Ardanian Army, is captured by Night Elves, she is certainly bound for interrogation and death. As she makes a slow journey to the Night Elves with her captor Aruna, they find themselves inextricably pulled to one another, the consequences of which neither is prepared to trust nor accept.
The world-building in this novella was great. We get a good glimpse into the Night Elves, the Sun Elves and the humans and their intricacies and conflicts with one another. I liked the forest that Novikke finds herself in and its mysteries. The inability to speak each other’s language and relying on other means to communicate was a great touch to the believability of the world.
While I liked aspects of the plot, at times I found it somewhat predictable. This can be both good and bad. Some predictability and use of tropes in Fantasy is good because it grounds the reader in a world not too far from their own. Too much though, and it becomes easy for readers to know what comes next. For my taste, there was a little too much predictability. I still enjoyed the novella, but it made reading drag on a little.
One thing I found hard to move past were some of the early intimate scenes between Novikke and her love interest. At times, I found this progression to be incongruent with the broader plot and would have preferred some of the descriptions of attraction/intimacy were avoided until later. My main issue was that it didn’t feel true to Novikke’s situation as a soldier and captive behind enemy lines.
On the whole, I did enjoy this book. There were definitely some aspects that could be better built upon, but I can also understand that this is a novella and it can be harder to progress the plot without moving too fast.

I really did enjoy this and will be recommending this to my friends who also love fantasy. It had me hooked from page one and all the way to the end. I couldn't put it down. I will be reading the next books soon.

I genuinely enjoyed this book. It's short, simple yet effective in conveying both characterization and worldbuilding, all while building up a surprisingly gentle romance that leaves you wanting more.
The sequels should be published within the end of June, but I couldn't help myself and requested both ARCs because I definitely need more :')
It was an okay read. 2.5 🌟stars The thing that annoyed me most was the fact that the main characters were walking in a forest for the entire book.... Still debating whether or not I'll pick up the second book.
I'm really not that much of a fan of books that read like the first half of a whole book and have been split in the middle to make it a series or something because of reasons? I swear, some "series" would've been better left as a standalone novel!
This one here felt like the end of a chapter and not the end of a book, right in the middle of an action scene. *insert angry emoji here* Naturally, I did read on, like the author wants you to. And the second book pretty much sucked, which is unfortunate, so I stopped reading it at the 20% point or so. But I digress.
The story of this whole series had so much potential yet didn't succeed in making this read more than okay. The characters had sooo much potential, and I liked the struggle of captor/captive – which sadly dissappeared somewhere along the lines and I still don't know where. Suddenly there was a sentence and suddenly there was attraction. Okay. Could've made this more of a slow burn story and resolved the tension at a later point, but apparently they needed to boink in the first book, so that's what they did. A tad disappointing, because right after that the air was out of the plot. Like, literally. :/
Let me tell you something about this book, it's tiring.
For a fantasy book, that the author didn't hesitate to even explained us how that place where they lived worked, just named places that we didn't know and talked about elves.
I hated that literally for the first hqlf of the book she was captive and nothing else good happened, just the main character questioning how gorgeous his captor is.
The book is short, but here to say, for a book to be short and only telling us that just this estocolm syndrome happened on it, it's just disappointing.
I just want my time back.
This is a book that you should read if you don't like fantasy books so long, and some good "enemies to lovers"
This book felt very flat. The plot- If there was one the characters- boring the...'romance' If you want to call it that has absolutely no chemistry and seemed a bit forced. It was a book about walking quietly through a forest where nothing happened and when something did happen, it didn't even last one page. It was over and done with too quickly to be noticeable.
This was surprisingly good. More of a 3 stars but gave it 4 because it doesn't seem to be as well known. Hated how short it was. Didn't feel like it was full length.
Overall Rating 4/5 | Main Character 4/5 | Relationship 3/5
This was a pleasant surprise - I believe it’s an Adult series but I had forgotten that by the time I actually started reading it so I was shook by some of the content that came up. It has some very dark parts but they’re brief - the worst parts are *mostly* insinuated, not acted out on page. Personally, I found that aspect to be unique from what I normally read, so I enjoyed the high stakes atmosphere and never knowing if the protagonist was going to get out of a situation unharmed.
I really liked Novikke for the most part - I found her to be funny and relatable in the ways she viewed situations. I also liked that throughout the entire story there’s this clear conflict for both her and Aruna about how to handle situations. They both have feelings for each other but they still view the other person as the enemy - I really like that this was not an insta-love situation where after an hour together the enemies suddenly would do anything for one another. This felt very realistic with how conflicted they both seemed to be in regards to the other person.
I also hadn’t expected the language barrier but I really liked that element. I can’t remember the last time I’ve read something where the love interests don’t speak the same language, so it added an interesting obstacle to overcome.
As for the romance, this book definitely isn’t romantic. There is a lot of tension though, which is something I enjoy. Not sure where the series will go but I would love to see Aruna and Novikke move beyond sexual tension and actually soften towards each other and see some romance in book two or three. Overall, great first book in the series (I also love how much of a quick read it was) and I’m excited to read the rest.
This book was pure bliss for me. I am a huge fan of slow burn enemies to lovers romance, but rarely come across the emotional intensity this book gave
It read like three main parts, the first being the meeting of Aruna and Novikke and their attraction slowly building. I honestly enjoyed their one on one interactions and entire journey the most.
This was the most fleshed out, realistic enemies to lovers romance I've seen in a long time, where the complexity and sacrifice that comes with loving someone you've only ever known as an enemy is truly explored. Where our main characters have to decide who they are apart from the societies and cultures that would keep them steeped in hate, after they come to know better about the other.
I loved that Novikke (FMMC) was just human, no super magic rare power that makes her 'special' and 'one in a million's, no sword wielding high end assassin that can kill with one swipe😂 None of that, she was just human, flawed and exceptional because she just was who she was.
Aruna complemented her so well, resilient with a quiet strength, but somehow still lethal. I loved his integrity, and the evolution of both characters
The world building was decent, it was an interesting world with a solid foundation. I loved the language elements (though there was some occasional wee bits of intrusion of modern 'tone' if I were to be really picky). Language is a bug bear of mine, and the one thing I'm always picky about in books, but overall don't think it took away from the flow. What really sets this book apart for me is the characters, the emotional tension, and the background world building.
Absolutely give it a chance (for those who said it took time to build up). Have gone onto the 2nd and 3rd books in the series and this couple is my favourite.
It seems this book is taking a hard look at pre-judging based on assumptions versus making your own decisions based on how you are treated. And that’s just a tiny piece of all that is going on.
Novikke is in the Ardanian army and has always been told to avoid the night elves whom her people have fought for centuries. The night elves are known for violence and their hatred of humans. But when Novikke is taken prisoner by the night elf, Aruna, she realizes she will die.
Aruna is not what she expected and Novikke looks at him differently based on his compassion to her, his intelligence, and his strong sense of honor. Further, she is now questioning all she thought she knew because it isn’t lining up with what she is seeing in front of her. But their people are enemies. Would he kill her if commanded to do so? Or would he spare her life and betray his people for a human?
The two of them begin to fall for each other in a slow burn romance which will be continued into the next book. But the questions are raised to think about. Aside from the life and death situation, the characters also cannot communicate with a common language, so things are even more difficult to navigate. Yet they find a way to realize what they want. Grab your copy that sets the stage for the next book while the reader has time to contemplate how they can get through what’s coming.
The author's writing style is straightforward and concise, which paired nicely with the fast pacing of the book. The worldbuilding is well developed considering the short pagecount, with the politics and histories of the world managing to be intriguing without overshadowing the immediate storyline. The author has a lovely way of simply describing the world that still makes it feel mysterious, magical and alive.
The relationship between the two main leads is exactly what I want from an enemies to lovers story. Tension, conflict, attraction and stakes that heighten it all. A little bit of more wit and humor would have been nice but the existing chemistry was already so good I hardly missed it.
I will say that the length of the book is on the shorter side which I found surprising for a fantasy. Personally, I wasn’t in the mood for a particularly long book when I picked this one up so it didn’t bother me too much. However the ending does feel truncated, like it finished in the middle of the story rather than at a solid conclusion. The rest of the books in the series could have probably been combined for a longer but more complete and satisfying story.
I recommend Night Elves of Adrani. If the short length doesn’t bother you, and you wouldn’t mind reading the rest of the books, you will enjoy the book for what it is: an engaging and exciting enemies to lovers story.
First of all, I need to start by saying: ugh, how gorgeous is this cover?!
I really liked Novikke (expect I kept pronouncing her name incorrectly and then I would get annoyed at myself haha)
She was strong in character and spirit not as a physical fighter even though she is a member of the Queen’s Ardanian Army.
Aruna was a mysterious character who I loved because it was obvious he really always questions what he is told to believe and that he has honour and compassion. I’m looking forward to learning more about him.
I enjoyed the brief history of why there are Night Elves and Sun Elves and how it wasn’t an overload of information. I think it was written really well.
The ending was a cliffhanger which made my main issue even more of an issue:
I was super disappointed about it being only 97 pages
I personally would have preferred all three parts be in one regular size novel.
This was a 4/5* read for me. It would have been more I really couldn’t get past the fact I felt I only read the beginning of a novel.
I’m already looking out for the Arc for book two and three!
I received an advance review copy for free for an honest review.
I received an eARC of this book from Book Sirens. I was not compensated for my review, all opinions are my own.
I started this book and flew through the pages. I loved Novikke and her snarky attitude. although she was not fighter in the Army, she had tough streak about her. Aruna was just as likable but had a mysterious side to him. I'm sad that this book was only 97 pages. This book does leave on a cliffhanger and I look forward to reading the next book. It looks as though this story will be a three book series but I would have liked it to be one book. This is especially true if book 2 and 3 are the same length as this one. As someone who reads a lot, I find value in a longer book and will pay a bit more. Overall, I really liked this story and am looking forward to seeing where the author takes us. I also would like to add that the cover of this book is beautiful. If I saw it in the store, I would have picked it up. The only reason this book didn't receive a 5 star review is because it was so short.
Night Elves of Ardani swept me up in the tale from the very beginning. There is the horror movie "this is a bad idea" at the beginning, and what do you know, it isn't. But, if the characters always made the "right" choices there would be no story. It serves to help the reader see the characters and how they may not be exactly what the other is expecting.
Story reminded me a little of Romeo and Juliet in the sense of being attracted to ones enemy. Main characters are torn between what they have been taught and what they are seeing for themselves. As definitions of who is good and bad begins to change their world view, the question becomes what side are they going to choose.
Leads into book 2 with a satisfying ending for now. I am excited to return to this world and see where the story goes from here.
