Sir Michael Caine—perhaps best known as gang leader Charlie Croker in 60s crime caper The Italian Job—tells the stories of remarkable heists and extraordinary robberies from around the world, as remembered by the masterminds, detectives, victims, journalists and witnesses that lived through them.
For more than 60 years, Caine has played thieves, criminals, gangsters and the detectives trying to catch them. But there’s Hollywood and then there’s real life... and that’s when things get really interesting.
From the largest bank burglary in American history, to the world’s most audacious book heist, Heist with Michael Caine travels to America, Australia, Stockholm, Antwerp and everywhere in-between to tell true stories behind the world’s most daring heists.
A Somethin’ Else production for Audible Originals, Heist with Michael Caine was created by Alexis Conran, Russell Finch and David Britland. Produced by Richard Ward and Jessica Beck. Executive produced by Joe Sykes and Russell Finch.
I have grown up with Michael Caine and for me he has always been a box office draw. It was his name that drew me to this audible series because I knew if he was involved it would have to be good. Not normally a fan of true crime, his presence provided the necessary cache to put preconception aside and have a listen. Unsurprisingly I am glad I did. So much so, with the final episode presided primarily by another narrator, I did not care as the subject matter was so compelling.
This 6 episode series takes us behind the scenes of some of the most high profile robberies ever attempted. It is not only the daring-do of the capers themselves, it is the seemingly mundane circumstances that often lead to the perpetrators capture that make you think how close they came to getting away with it. However close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
Episode 1: Underneath Diamond Town. This is a recounting of a diamond theft in Antwerp, Belgium, and just goes to show that even impregnable vaults are, in fact, pregnable.
Episode 2: The Transylvania Book Heist. This one is amazing in that the thieves originally got away with it as it sounded like a bit of a Mutt and Jeff lark. And yet...
Episode 3: You Gotta Have Balls. Aptly titled. How these guys performed the robbery, then almost eluded capture, gives the name to the title of this episode. But, where did the money go?
Episode 4: All The Money In Stockholm. A heavily fortified storage facility, a helicopter, robber clad in black using explosives to gain entry, with all of it caught on camera while police helplessly watched? Straight out of Hollywood. Yet it happened!
Episode 5: The Multimillion-Dollar Fax. This one relies heavily on human error, but at the same time, it is a mistake anyone could make. In these days of high tech, it is probably more amazing that this type of heist does not occur more often!
Episode 6: Heist – The Inside Story. The creator of the series, Alexis Conran, takes over the bulk of the narration for this episode and walks us through the impact that heists like this have on society.
Audacious and thrilling, but at the same time illegal as hell, these thieves received their comeuppance. While exciting, it is important to remember, there are always people that get hurt.
Entertaining and well-produced true crime Audible series hosted by Michael Caine about interesting heists. He's a superb narrator that leads us through five cases with interviews of the criminals themselves, detectives, and investigative journalists. The sixth episode is more of a recap of heists and criminal behavior thinking. Short fun listen.
Michael Caine is an excellent narrator, and each heist was unique. I also learned that security analysts and thieves think the same way; one knows how to commit the heist and the other knows how to prevent it.
