Wingfall: bloodwing academy

Rate this book
Blessed by Angels. Trained to fight. Destined to fall.
Heaven's gate breaches when I find out my dead boyfriend has returned a monster; the one thing I've been sworn to destroy. The revelation shatters all faith in the academy, where I've been trained to hunt the fallen races, but also hints at dark histories long forgotten by our angelic founders.

Lusting for purpose amidst these tempting intrusions has left me torn between two an angelic training academy where faith is worshiped above everything else; and this otherworldly life well-known among supernatural creatures like werewolves and vampires - even though it may be wrong on many levels...
Despite my better judgment, I'm drawn to this new world full of dark promises. After all, what's wrong with a little harmless flirtation when it comes to eternity? Blood came into question when strange tattoos appeared across my skin... and then there are these lips! Like nothing you've ever seen or felt before - until they're pressed against yours in moonlight shadows by lovers' fingertips eager for secrets never told.

But as I explore my newfound powers and appetites, it becomes clear that there's more at stake than just my own desires. What will it take to save myself from this dark new world? With each step I take into the shadows, I risk losing myself - and worse, my wings.

Will I be able to resist the temptations of power and pleasure? Especially when there's an ancient book that hints at forgotten histories and dark temptations that are quickly becoming harder and harder to resist... Or will I succumb to the darkness and become something else entirely?

This is a world where love, faith, and betrayal all come into play. And I have to choose which side I'm on. Can I stay loyal to my mission when everything around me is falling apart? If I make the wrong choice, it could mean the end of everything. But if I make the right choice, it could save the world.

Wingfall is book one in a YA fallen angel/demon hunter academy series.

I did this as an audiobook, I enjoyed it, Cora is an interesting character, brave as she was curious, always took risks and breaking the rules dispite the consequences.

I have some SERIOUS issues

I normally love everything Drake Mason writes...under both names. But if this book continues in the direction I think its going, I'm going to be very bothered. So far it seems very anti-Christian specifically anti-Catholic. And if it continues in subsequent books I may give up on these two authors completely. And I've been on his ARC team for years now.
BUT, the story is interesting...and I'd love it if it did disrespect the single most important thing in my life. I've always rated his books highly. I'll have to see how it goes. If it ends up as anti-Christian, I'm done. Why do so many think it's OK to disrespect faith but not life choices? It's becoming annoying. Do not mix paranormal with Christianity. They are completely incompatible. If you're a Christian and truly care about your faith you will likely hate this. Especially if you've never read from this author before. Since I really like him I'm hoping it isn't what it seems.
These authors seem to know just enough to be dangerous to the faith...spread errors and be blasphemous and heretical. I'm not very happy with it. Though it's still "fun" as his books usually are. I'm torn. But can't give my usual hight rate.

At first this story struck me as a paranormal high school bully romance with angel descendants. It started with two teens, Cora and Noah, rebelliously hunting down dragons agaist Cora’s father’s wishes. Afterwards, Cora received an angelic mark, or sign of approval, from the angel Chamuel, Cora was approached by the “in” crowd, or Dante and friends. Despite her father’s status as the leader of the academy, she had a tendency to act impulsively, leading her into trouble. Dante wanted her to scare an orgy of fae…to prove the angelic descendants’ dominance.

Cora didn’t go along with their plan, and she received a second mark from Raphael, with a healing gift when Dante’s life was threatened. All she had ever wanted was a mark from Michael, with a gift of fighting. Thus, Cora didn’t appreciate receiving gifts from Chamuel and Raphael as much as she should have.

The side effects of healing include intimacy. Dante suddenly became interested in Cora. Since she had a crush on him, she didn’t dismiss it as the short-term side effects she should. It is unfortunate that Cora had two other, more compassionate suitors to choose: Aamon, whom she thought dead, and Noah, her BFF “kitchen friend.”

Then the tone changed. Her ex-boyfriend, Aamon, was a vampire, and thus an enemy of the alaric (angel faction). He tried to convince her that things were not as they seemed: “Any seeds of doubt are quickly smothered, aren’t they?”

The story evolved into an action-packed fightfest, but I was no longer amused. Cora might claim to want to discuss the differences, but more often she reverted to Dante’s methods of violence. She made stupid acts of rebellion despite respectable advice and her own beliefs. When the vampires and werewolves attack the alaric, all Cora’s thoughts are consumed by vengeance (no, investigation….no, vengeance!) I was frustrated. The only redeeming part of this was the ending, where truths were revealed.

After all, when there is peer pressure: “They don’t get to come before your own grief, and that’s for you to figure out.” Perhaps this is a coming-of-age kind of novel. It has nice plot twists, but otherwise doesn’t make me want to read the next.

I love academy books where new fledglings are starting to gain their powers and magic but this academy is different in that the acolytes are trained to become alary if chosen during their blessing ceremony by one of the seven archangels. The alary are a group of winged angelborn and blessed who train in order to keep humans safe from the evils of the feldings, those considered to be evil races such as the vampires, werewolves and the fae. Cora was the chancellor's daughter, whose mother had been killed in a battle with a felding or so the story went. She was impulsive, reckless and out to prove herself to her father as well as being enamoured by the human realm. She often sneaked out of the academy to venture into the city of Boston dragging her best friend Noah with her and oftentimes getting him into trouble. Cora started to gather a group of friends who also followed her on her escapades, putting all their lives in danger and taking them away from divine providence when the biggest attack ever took place. Cora felt extreme guilt for what happened but this made her risk her friends lives once again as she sought out a seedy den of the vampires for revenge. What she discovers leaves her reeling and her curiosity leads her to search for the truth come what may! I love this very exciting book full of angelborn, vampires and other creatures where nothing is what it seems at first glance. Their is more depth to this story which I am dying to read about in the following books in the series. Can Cora find the missing artefacts?

Great New Series Starter!

I am a big fan of the author. When I saw this book available at no cost I grabbed it! Wingfall grabbed my attention from the beginning and kept it the entire book. The characters are very well developed and likable. Descriptions are vivid without being wordy. It is action packed and entertaining. I am looking forward to seeing the next one in this series.
I am leaving a review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.

Long and complex. The girl cant just stay still and stop looking for problems.
This book took me more than usual to read. At about half of the book I lost interest a couple of months ago. I recently continued it and managed to finish... all to be left with a cliffhanger. The technique is very well applied.
I was confused in several parts of this book, but eventually it managed to straight out. 3 stars for me.

interesting

A new take on an old favorite of mine.. the conflicts between good and evil and what is truly meant by evil. The characters are interesting and the plot gives nothing away, which I love. Very good read.
