Dynamic Interactive Astrology uses a comprehensive and sophisticated set of keywords, and subsequent key phrases created by the user, that provide immediate access to the meanings in one's birth chart of the Planets, Signs, Houses and Aspects - the stuff of astrology. Specific questions that are addressed to the key phrases that the reader/seeker has created initiate a process of dynamic interaction and are based on the idea that the reader/seeker already has the answers to these questions inside them. This idea is akin to the basic psychotherapeutic premise that the practitioner never tells their client what they are like or what to do, but asks questions that elicit the client's innate self-awareness. This is known as 'clean' psychology as it avoids the practitioner's own personal agenda getting in the way. Having utilised these two methods the user can then apply them, safely, to other individuals and their birth charts.
This looks to be part of a coming series, as this is titled the first volume. It covers the luminaries, Sun and Moon, the planets, the Angles, Ascendant and Descendant, MC/IC, and the nodal axis. Chiron and asteroid bodies don't get a mention, neither to any Kuiper Belt bodies and beyond, other than Pluto. Aspects will be covered on the next volume, according to the author.
This is probably, more than enough for a beginner to be getting on with when starting out.
Burbeck emphasises that only a professional should be entrusted with a full interpretation of your Birth Chart, paradoxically this book is full of photocopiable material on how to interpret experientially your own chart, using keywords for each planet, angle, mathematical point, within its house and sign.
One thing he does slightly differently is to group the three inner planets with the three outer ones. This, Uranus becomrs the higher octave of Mercury, Neptune of Venus, and Pluto of Mars. This idea of the transpersonal as being higher octaves is scarcely a new idea either, of course.
This is the 'modern' approach to astrology: the idea that by becoming aware of the planets and how they play out on your chart, the less likely it is that you will be enslaved by them, the more positive sides of each planet becoming more manifest. It is an approach that was very much in vogue in the eighties and nineties. Hopefully, this method of experiencing the main players on your horoscope will be as fresh and exciting an experience for the budding astrologer as might be hoped for. Others since have argued that whilst this approach to astrology seems to favour destiny, it can sometimes reveal itself to show up Fate in a velvet glove.
The thing about keywords too is that they may work as great guides to begin with, as long as they don't end up becoming clichés, a rusted mirror, reflecting nothing. But hopefully there, Uranus will prevail over Mercury.
Possibly too, some of the sample birthcharts used in this volume could have been updated: it's possible a new generation of astrologers won't be massively au fair with Thatcher, there may be more recent colourful figures they might be more worried about.
It might be better to get the hard copy as unfortunately, the handouts for writing on and accompanying comments got somewhat mangled on my Kindle.
Ultimately the proof is in the pudding, and this book invites each reader to try it out for themselves. The author includes a link to his website where birthcharts may be obtained for free, and the addres of his Facebook page is also given, should there be the desire to share insights, feedback, etc.
I received a copy of this book for review. Having been interested in astrology but never explored it, I was excited to get stuck in.
As a complete beginner in the study of astrology, I found this book both interesting and hard to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I will need to continue working with it over a period of time as it is more of a workbook than a simple informational read. I am now copying details for astrology tables, and I’m using free download tools referred to in the book, so that I can study astrology on a practical level and use it for my life guidance and deeper understanding.
This book is written in a tone that you can easily understand but you do need to concentrate on the technical stuff!
This book is great! It is so in depth! I wish I had a hard copy instead of the electronic copy as I wanted to write all over it. The book really made me want to get stuck in and get reading of my own astrology as well as the given examples. Its pretty full on, and can be a bit overwhelming at times - with the sheer amount of info in the book, but it certainly leaves you feeling you've accomplished something after reading! Definitely recommend for experienced astrologers or newbies alike!
E-arc received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'll be honest, the first time I tried to use this book, my brain wasn't switched on and I didn't understand what was happening. But thankfully, I gave it another shot and I'm so glad I did!
I definitely think you need this book in print form - as it's been designed to be used. I think being digital is why I struggled to grasp the concept at first.
I like how this book is interactive and anyone can do it. I also really enjoyed the writing activities and questions along the way.
This is definitely NOT the right book for me! This might be a great book for someone who is much newer to astrology. I picked this up on a whim because I thought that I would learn some new things and also build on the foundation of knowledge that I already have. Creating fill-in-the-blank sentences from word clouds was absolutely not what I was expecting - and incredibly disappointing. Most especially not choosing a single word or two for each planet + sign + house. Ugh.
Fascinating introductory book into astrology. It covers the Sun, Moon, Planets, Houses… it was challenging to read as an ebook. I felt as though it would be better to be able to quickly flip around during the exercises with a physical copy. There is mentions of a second book coming out to engage further in these topics. I look forward to that!
Such a fun read, and the first where the author walks you through steps, shows examples and give you a sense of actually understanding how to work your way through the book. Something I find authors of this genre lack. This author hold her own, and the book was so beautiful created.
This is a great book for those wishing to learn Astrology. It is simple to use in a workbook format and gives newcomers to this ancient Art a good foundation to better understand themselves and others.
This is a very interesting book. I enjoyed the exercises to help me remember the planets and their interactions. I'm still attempting to work through the material. It is good for someone who needs to write things to remember them.
