An FBI Agent. A missing hiker. And a secret to die for...
FBI Agent Faith Black was damn good at her job.
But considering the events of her last case, she is lucky to still have her badge.
Her latest assignment lands her in a sleepy backwoods town where people are disappearing.
She’s less than enthused.
She partners with the local sheriff who's desperate for answers. They agree that their only option is to retrace the footsteps of a college grad who recently vanished while hiking.
Together they scour the hiking trail over 87 miles through the thick mountain forest. They can't shake the eerie feeling they are not alone.
Whatever was lurking in the shadows wants them gone.
And nothing could have prepared them for what they find.
It was a secret that the ominous forest has been hiding.
A secret only the dead knew...
Vanished is the prequel to the Faith Black FBI Crime Files series; it can be read as a standalone.

Jade Madden lives in Minnesota with her husband and dogs. When she's not writing mystery, thriller, and suspense books, she loves to travel, long-distance hiking, gardening, clean eating, learning about healthy lifestyles, bushcraft, herbalism, and staying fit.
Fantastic first chapters, then we get the POV of the FBI agent and I just loved it. She was a fantastic character (and loved learning more about her, though it also broke my heart) and I loved the Sherrif, James, as well! Their banter was just so funny and I loved that they also had a spark between them (romance may not be one of the things of the list, but I did think it was a good addition). Loved that both of them were very eager to figure out what the hell has happened and things went from OK-ish to WELP exciting! But the Matthew POV? Well.... that is -1 star. I am never a fan of adding POVs for villains/bad guys/people who just stalk and murder people. I really struggled to get through these parts. I do hope that there is more Faith Black books, but I do hope that we don't get the bad guys POV next time. Please.
A new Author for myself, I did receive this book for free for a review. I must say ,I was Absolutely Enthralled with the Story, I fell in Love with the modern day Heroine. She is an Wonderfully believable character, and I so Love a Great Mystery !! I could not put the book down and read it in one sitting. I am now following this Author and can't wait to read her next Book in the series !!!
All too often prequel’s are just a tease and set up for Book I of a series. I do so love with an author can make a prequel novella that stands alone yet makes me want the next one. Especially when a female FBI agent is looking for a woman that went missing on the 87 mile stretch of Jade Forest section.
We are off to a quick start, when a young girl goes missing in the Jade Forest.
Small town mystery with a couple of characters brought together under tragic circumstances. How much danger will they face? I think plenty. The big question is, where will it come from? Is it two legged or four legged? Will there be a romance?
Vanished by Jade Madden is a complete novella, an entire story, in one fell swoop. YAY!
It is written with a light touch. Though there is plenty of gruesome death, it’s over quick. I never really felt the sense of urgency and suspense I love so much. That’s okay. It is a novella and I don’t believe it was meant to. NOW…
What’s next in the Faith Black Case Files? Bring it on.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Vanished by Jade Madden.
This book is a good start to a series. The author has established some characters, whose story we want to follow. At the same time, the plot line of this book was tied up in the end. A lot of authors have some difficulty producing a series without leaving cliffhangers, but that was not a problem here. The author made me want to read the next one; she didn’t trick me into it. I appreciate that.
It was less predictable than other books. There were a few areas where I had questions or thought some more clarification was in order, but they weren’t major points and didn’t affect the overall storyline. I don’t recall any typos, which in itself is unusually impressive! It was a good story. Dark, but well-written. I would read the next in the series.
I did receive an ARC, but this is my honest review.
FBI Agent Faith has had a bad case and she has to prove herself. She is assigned to a case in.a sleepy town in the backwoods. People are disappearing and she works with the sheriff to find out more about what happened. But the secret they uncover is very chilling. This book is full of suspense and is very exciting. I recommend this book to other readers.
June Robinson went on an 87 mile hike on her own. Day two started out with rain. Even with the sun out she couldn’t warm up. She set camp where she could since she wouldn’t make it to her camp site. The next day was no better. She was really sick. Then she disappeared. Special Agent Faith Black FBI and Sheriff James Hollow followed her footsteps to find her. This is where it all went wrong. Even with backup tracking her became so very dangerous. You can’t put it down as you need to see what happens next. So highly recommend. I can’t wait for the next book to come out. It will be awesome like this one.
FBI Agent Faith Black is assigned a missing person's case in the middle of nowhere. She is a good agent, but she made a mistake and now has to prove herself. She meets the Sheriff and the two of them set out to track down the missing person. However, this isn't the only person that has gone missing. They track down clues and call in more support as the clues lead to something even bigger. Good back story and interaction with the characters. Great start to a new series. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
This book had me hooked from the first page. We follow an FBI agent on a case that she originally thinks will be easy and insignificant. Boy, was she wrong. There is madness, horror, and romance in this book. There are twists and turns throughout. The characters all become real as you read. I keep replaying it in my sleep. Definitely a book I highly recommend.
I can't believe that this was the author's first book. I enjoyed it immensely, could not put it down. Loved the characters, can't wait to see how FBI Agent Faith Black career goes and if she will get together with the sheriff
Gripping story, with a setting that the author makes you think you are actually in the woods. Searching is deeply involved, risking to find the answers. Hard to put down once you're into the scenario.
I really enjoyed this fast-paced crime story which I read in a couple of hours, it was just right for a cosy evening reading : ) FBI Agent June is tasked with solving a series of missing person cases, she is a very likeable character. I am looking forward to the sequels. I would be happy to let my 14-year-old daughter read this story, I'm sure she would enjoy it as much as I did. I feel as a former high school teacher there was nothing in it that most teenagers would be unfamiliar with watching or reading. It was a great read!
Personally, I like the different voices in how it is narrated. It's a nice pace story and I find it fun and engaging enough to read it in one sit. Personally, I think Faith character is great, and want to see how it is developed in the next books
I enjoyed this book very much. For a prequel you still get enough backstory to make you very interested in the upcoming series. FBI agent, Faith Black, is sent to a mountainous area to find out what is happening to hikers on an 87 mile stretch of hiking trails. For quite a while hikers have been disappearing and no trace of them has been found. Faith screwed up on her last assignment and this is her redeeming case, if she can solve it. I am looking forward to the rest of the series. If you like a great mystery this is one you should not miss.
Vanished is the first book that I read by Jade Madden and it was a positive surprise. The plot is good, the story is well written and it's fast-paced. Faith's and Sheriff Hollow's tenacity in discovering what happened to June led to uncovering a much bigger problem that both have to face with some nefarious consequences. Good entertainment! Looking forward to reading other books in the series. I received a free copy of this book and this is my unbiased opinion.
Highly recommended. If this author had not declared that Vanished was her first novel I would never have guessed! I felt this was written by a seasoned author. What a great story! And what a superb ending. What will happen and where will the story go. Excellent leads into the series! Every other review is accurate from impressive first book, well written, intensely gripping and full of suspense to engrossing and riveting. The only way for me to add to the review is to use synonyms. Well done Jade Madden!! I cannot wait for the first full book to follow this prequel. Highly recommend Vanished and can tell you the next instalment is going to be worth the wait!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The story begins with June Robinson beginning a hike on the Chippaway trail. She is going alone and this is something that she wants to complete before moving to the city from Oak Creek. She starts by taking a picture on her phone at the sign where the trek begins. This is the last communication that she will be able to do because the signal will be lost. She makes it to the 1st campsite with no trouble. The next day she starts her hike after a storm passes. She is wet and soon becomes sick. She pushes herself to the next stop. When she wakes up the following morning, she starts to see if there is someplace close by where she can get help.
Faith Black, an FBI agent, has been assigned a case to looking for June since it has been two weeks since she was last heard from and this area has an unnormal amount of missing people and the sheriff has requested help. Faith arrives and talks to the family and friends of June and learns that this is usual for her to not contact her parents. Faith talks to the sheriff and they make plans to start following the trail that June took. They discover the 1st campsite that June had stopped at and continued looking. The next time Faith and James, the sheriff, stopped they discovered that someone was watching them. They decided at that time to follow this individual. The sheriff contacted his office and requested additional backup. The backup arrived, which included a tracker, and the search continued. As they restarted the search, they came accross a grave. At this point, more backup was requested and Faith also asked for additional resources from the FBI. They eventually came to an old logging camp.
To learn what they discovered, what was found in the logging camp and whether Faith was able to complete her mission, then you need to read this book. You won't be disappointed.
Wow! Very, very good book. I loved the cast of characters. They're all well written, compelling, and in my opinion, realistic. Faith Black is an FBI agent sent to a small mountain town to investigate the mysterious disappearance of several hikers. She teams up with the local sheriff, and they decide to follow in the footsteps of the latest hiker who has vanished. They could have never anticipated what they discover. Exciting action, suspense, brutal murder, and an unexpected twist. This is definitely a must read, and I'm looking forward to the next book.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
June Robinson is an avid hiker. She decides to hike a massive trail alone. The travel time is around a week. June calls her parents at each camp site until she loses cell phone service. June becomes sick and varies off the trail seeking help. Her parents do not hear from her after the timeframe of her journey. The FBI sends agent Faith Black to investigate. She works with a local sheriff to try and find June. A suspenseful and thrilling conclusion to this novel. I am hoping for more Faith Black episodes.
I received an ARC of this FBI procedural from KCB Mysteries and Jade Madden. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read this novel of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am pleased to recommend Jade Madden to friends and family. She writes an intense, swiftly moving mystery with personable protagonists and a well-presented background on which she builds her story.
The first of a new Series, Faith Black FBI Case Files, Vanished is a fast read featuring a sympathetic Faith Black as she susses out the mystery surrounding the disappearance of several girls from the general area of the Jade Forest section of the Chippaway Trail, an 87-mile hike usually taking about 7 days to complete. While there is no actual Chippaway Trail, I felt this novel was based on the Western Trail that runs through the California Sierra Nevada and up into Oregon and Washington State.
The story is well-drawn, the protagonists empathetic, and Faith Black is presented as a strong, capable, intelligent woman fully capable of handling this mystery. This is a series I will want to pursue. Thank you, KCB, for this intro to a series I know I will enjoy.

Considering this is the author's first book, it impressed me. It was a beautifully written, nail biting story that had me hooked from the first page. I hope there will be a book 2 so we can continue with the lives of the characters. Vanished is well worth reading.
Tension from the get go til the end. Faith and James end up hiking the trail together in search of a madman or a monster. I like these characters. There’s no playing games nor lack of respect. A great thriller.
