Okay, so I was definitely surprised by this book. I expected to hate it tbh because Maxim was never my favorite and Evie didn't interest me but I actually really enjoyed this book.
Starting with Evie, she wasn't the terrible love sick puppy I thought she'd be. I mean do I feel like she was a push over and overly enthusiastic yes but it kinda got canceled out with her constant self depreciation and self sabotage. Evie exuded immaturity and insecurity to the point that it was frustrating because she it on Maxim despite his constant reassurance that she was it for him. I feel like that was my whole issue with Evie, her actions felt lead by her perception of Maxim instead what she knew from him to be true. It felt like she acted out of that kiddy/fan-girl love instead of actual love. While Evie definitely wasn't the worst female lead she wasn't my favorite either.
Talking about character growth - Maxim and Sterling! I swear I would have been happy reading this book solely from Maxims POV if only to see more of Maxim's and Sterling's bonding moments and to see them breaking those generational chains. Forget a romance tbh I was here for the bond of these brothers. After seeing the two brothers go after each other like cats and dogs it was so wholesome to see them come together to heal those wounds and integrate in each other's lives. And I mean that moment eith them at the end of the book? It had my heart ❤️ 💙

Also Maxim standing up to his dad was everything. There was no fists or irrational anger just a man who finally put his foot down and honesty was the ultimate tell of maturity and growth that I didn't think we'd get from Maxim.

Maxim and Evies conflict was just stupid to me. It made no sense and while they both had they're parts in it I feel like Evie just was outta pocket. What caused them to implode was something that was out of Maxim control, it was something that Maxim had told Evie could and probably would happen and she claimed she understood this. .. clearly not.

Instead of talking it out she ran but later says it wasn't just because of the original misunderstanding they had but because of Maxim not telling her that he loved her... but he hadn't said it for a while and it was not a problem for her before them getting in a fight. And while I totally get wanting to hear those words and having a problem not getting to hear them and that was a problem to discuss for sure it wasn't a problem that she should have tied to a tabloid article. That's what pissed me off about it the most. Evie had all the time in the world to bring up the lack of I love yous from Maxim before that article came out but didn't. She waited until the first little bumb in the road to throw it in Maxims face and blam everything on him.
It took Mila pointing out that the article wasn't Maxims fault and why Maxim would have a problem saying the word love considering their family. And I loved that Mila kinda put her in her place (in the softest and nicest way) and told Evie you should know this you basically grew up with us. Like thank you Mila!
I do appreciate that Evie apologized to Maxim though. That had me shook because I didn't think she would. Also Maxim standing up to his dad and risking his career to go get his woman was everything.

I felt like Evie and Maxim would've benefited from separating for a few years so she could mature and then come back together after Evie could grow up some.
This was a good story to end the series. Everything seemed to be wrapped up nicely.
I also deserve a medal lol because I read all 22 books in 14 days lol it was worth it though 😭🤣

Maxim Zolotov’s story is bittersweet because it’s the last book in the Carolina Reapers series by Samantha Whiskey. She is such a versatile and talented writer and truly knows her hockey! There’s always so much action and you feel as if you are part of the team and fanfare. I’m always impressed because her writing styles vary from sports romance, supernatural assassins and contemporary romance, to suspense thrillers under the pen name Minka Kent.
Maxim is book ten of an interconnected series with each book named after the hero. All can currently be found in kindle unlimited if you’d like to give this author a try if you’re not familiar with her work.
I loved how of our past heroes and heroines stood out and had come to be apart of the Carolina Reaper family by different circumstances. Set in beautiful Charleston County, South Carolina, it’s Maxim turn to fall in love. He is the leading scorer on his team, but has some mental health issues once his controlling and verbally abusive father, Sergei, a retired NHL goalie with all of the accolades, resurfaces.
Although a stand-alone, the characters are introduced in previous books, and you truly feel for Maxim. His brother from another mother, Sterling, is also on the team and although their relationship got off to a rocky start, they have bonded rather well over the past year and it warmed my heart to see Sterling defend Maxim.
Their sister Mila needs a favor as she’s off to Italy for a few months and asks Maxim for a favor...if her friend Evie, who is all grown up, could stay with him so they can sublet their apartment and save for their business venture. Both girls are artistic and want to open their own studio, so of course Maxim agrees. Although Evie has always watched from afar and didn’t interfere, she is now up close and personal with her childhood crush, and longs for more. I love the dynamic and close relationship he has with his sister and older brother, David, and how this wasn't forbidden as Mila and her brothers encouraged the two of them to be together.
So many emotions in this story as our hero and heroine navigate being roommates with their blossoming friendship and desire. I honestly felt for Maxim the entire time–he was haunted by his past and while he remained strong and steadfast, his upbringing was crippling. She helped him see there is more to life than hockey, and cared about him as a person, not just as a professional athlete. And he helped her see her strengths and talents, and supported her dreams. She often didn’t feel comfortable in her own skin, but Maxium gave her confidence and changed all that.
He was so sexy, a bit tortured, and so sincere. All he wanted was to feel cherished and accepted and she did this for him. Evie was so relatable and I loved how sweet and down to earth she was and how she saw the bigger picture and helped him relax. They both made mistakes and learned from them, and his big grand gesture to win her heart, while a bit unrealistic, was super swoony and a great ending to this action-packed series about friends and family.
I loved how past characters were included (Axel, Sawyer, Connell, Logan Cannon, Sterling, Briggs, Caspian, and Brogan) and their significant others, as well as the team owner, Silas, and their PR director who befriended Evie. If you love hockey, start right here or start at the beginning, and also check out her Seattle Shark hockey series!

My review may contain slight spoilers if I can't control my disdain for what this series has turned into....
This book was meh. Better than the last couple that were completely ruined but still not as good as the beginning of the series. I thought Maxim's character really showed good development but I was unimpressed with Evie's 180 and her bailing at the end. She was great up until then.
The glaring inconsistencies of writing (and now plot, thanks to the underlying details of Maxim's book) give me great disdain for ghost writers. I've known for awhile that this series is, very obviously, not written by one person and if I hadn't loved it so much in the beginning, I probably wouldn't care. But it's a money grab. There was no care or passion or consideration to readers to put out the best possible work and see the series through. And I just find that insulting.
My biggest pet peeve in this whole book? It wasn't how many times Evie's "lips parted" or the fact that Maxim never really told his dad to get f'ed and instead bailed on his team. No. It was the set up for what appears to be at least 2 new series. Early on in my discovery of Samantha Whiskey, I would have been thrilled. But now? I'm just rolling my eyes. There was so much emphasis on Asher in earlier books with his assistant. I have literally been craving his story. Then he was nonexistent in a few books and I thought for sure his book would be a perfect ending to our time in Reaper Village....but nooooo. He was set up to start a new Billionare saga with an random author that will shadow him? Obviously whoever wrote him in earlier with his assistant is no longer a part of Samantha Whiskey LLC.
And of course, we're set for another spinoff hockey saga in Bangor. Meh.
I finished out the Reapers because I was invested with my earlier love of the series but I don't know if I can support a company that is solely concerned with turning out books for a profit, instead of with passion and love for the craft of writing. SW LLC currently has set up or started/not finished a football series, a baseball series, and a vampire series that I'm aware of. And they're all suffering because of it. Now I'm off to find a good hockey series to make me feel better....

I hate the ending. He should never have left the game. Evie needed to find her balls instead of being a coward. Im not as disappointed after reading this as i was after Nixon (That one was baaad, i bitched over the ending for hours), this one was ok, exept the ending.

Too tired to write a review. Simply loves it and all the characters. This book marks my completion of my reading challenge. Though I am gonna continue reading. I might check out other books of this series as well.

Maxim has been a character I've not always liked, he often came off as a bulldozing ass. With this book he was better, it's helped that he has developed a relationship with Sterling instead of antagonizing him all the time for something that wasn't his fault. In fact, I really like how they embrace being family now, Sterling gave Maxim some great advice and support through out this book. I also loved that Maxim's teammates and those in power in the team realize how bad his dad is and helped protect Maxim when he needed it.
I wasn't sure about Maxim and Evie, but she turned out to be perfect for him. She truly liked him for himself, not the hockey or money, she has always been around, she grew up with him. Her reservations were real, not wanting to deal with the fame that comes with playing professional sports.
I loved how Evie was the one person that got Maxim to love playing hockey again, to just be there for him as he got out of the yips and playing back to normal. I hated how they were torn apart, but loved that with his actions Maxim let Evie know just how important she was for him.

Maxim by Samantha Whisky is a hockey sports romance that follows the story of Maxim and Evie. This is the tenth book in the Carolina Reapers series, which is a spin-off to the Seattle Sharks series.
Ahhh this book, I’ve been craving for long or as long as the attraction between Maxim and Evie had been hinted at. Every single page was pure perfection of how their story would play out.
The angst, the sexual tension, the emotional and everything else captured these two characters and their lives so beautifully.
This story ticks the sports romance box, but also adds in so many other tropes like little sisters best friend/best friends brother, friends to lovers and roommates.
Side note: the cover model, Lucas makes the perfect Maxim.

Maxim and Evie are probably one of my favorite couples. Besides them the story between Maxim and Sterling is also really heartwarming. I NEED a book about Asher and Daisy. I’m not sure if this is the end of the series, I got the feeling that it was, but I think the only thing I would have changed is that some of the characters I loved kind of disappeared from the team without any real mention of what happened to them. Just a brief mention of them retiring or maybe they play them after being traded to a different team would have been nice.

Oh my goodness. I knew under that tough exterior shell, there was a soft and caring guy. I have been waiting for Maxim and Evie’s story from all the little teases we got about them from previous books. Samantha Whiskey is Queen at dropping little hints on where her books might go next and I love it everytime she does a surprise release of a new book.
Evie has been Maxim’s sister, Mila, best friend for basically all their lives. With that said, she has been around the grumpy and focused Maxim. With her life long crush now an NHL star, Evie has always been in the background. But when Mila goes to Italy to study and sublets their apartment, Evie moves in with Maxim so she can finish her college classes. The two grow close as they navigate being roommates and the chemistry that has always been simmering underneath, comes to the surface.
The tension and chemistry between Maxim and Evie was absolutely delicious. You could feel it coming off the page. Even with both parents in the picture, Maxim did not have an easy childhood and you could see how much that impacted his personality and life. Although he was tough on himself and most of the people in his life, I loved the soft spot he had for his sister and by extension, her best friend. I loved Evie and was able to relate to her so much on a personal level. I like being behind the scenes like her and just being at home or spending time with my friends. The way these two bonded and formed their friendship and then their relationship never felt fake or forced. We get lots of scenes from the other Reapers, including my beloved Cannon, and it was great having the team all together.

this was such an easy read as i finished in a whole day and i loved every second of the book except the last 20% of the book they had an argument which led to evie leaving him and he didn’t even stop her. however, he finally stood up to his dad and defended evie when his dad spoke bad about her and i love how evie came to love herself.

this just showed me how much he loves her but before he could love her fully he need to stand up to his father and move on
this was such an easy read as i finished in a whole day and i loved every second of the book except the last 20% of the book they had an argument which led to evie leaving him and he didn’t even stop her. however, he finally stood up to his dad and defended evie when his dad spoke bad about her and i love how evie came to love herself.

I read this because I accidentally bought it, and I really enjoyed most of it. Maxim was great and Evie was predictable but didn’t bother me until the end. And the spice was really good 🔥💯
I contemplated DNFing at 86% when the immature breakup happens. It was so disappointing to have that ruin it for me, but it did. I had overlooked the melodramatic father issues that occurs through the book but once I was no longer invested that annoyed me too.
Evie didn’t deserve Maxim. He was absolutely right to be upset that she gave up on them because of a dumb gossip article. It’s so cliché and juvenile. I’m mad that he made the first move to reconcile. 🙅🏻♀️

This one was better than the last few! I felt more invested in this story, so much so I read it in one sitting. I'm definitely over the toxic family angle everyone seems to be taking on lately but that's most likely related to my own trauma.
Could you read it as a stand alone? Probably but you'd miss out on the bits of their story in the other ones that kinda adds to that slow burn feel. I know that eventually the author has to throw a wrench into the works but I'm not fond of the one used in this story, nor how it was resolved. (Especially as a hockey fan. Grand gesture? Sure. Would it actually happen, no.)
Would I read again? Yes.

This was an ok read for me. It was a little frustrating at the beginning with Maxim’s hot and cold routine and constant mixed signals. I also wasn’t a fan of the lack of communication and the way they both gave up so quick, neither willing to fight. But, the side characters are always enjoyable and I love the relationship between Maxim and Sterling and how far they’ve both come.
This was an ok read for me. It was a little frustrating at the beginning with Maxim’s hot and cold routine and constant mixed signals. I had no idea this was the tenth book in the series. I felt like I would’ve enjoyed it more had I started from the beginning but that’s totally on me. The book was still pretty good. It was your typical sports romance, it had the big friend group which I’ll never tire of, with likable characters.
It loses a star because after the conflict I feel like the h forgave the H too quickly.

I enjoyed this, I really did but I was also disappointed in a way because I expected.. more I guess. But then again, I was expecting more of a "She fell first, he fell harder" but I didn't feel that way at all when it came to Maxim.. so yeah.

Alright kids we got another sports romance because they are unrivaled in so many ways.
Evie my girlie was in love with this man for years since childhood and good for her for getting her man. Our girlie reads books just like this and got to live the life. Honestly, love that she was a baker idk but I always think it's so nice when they can cook/bake. Something about food in stories that get me going. I knew there was going to be an 80% break up and I didn't necessarily find the reasoning for it too out of the water but Her making most of being his lucky charm definitely made sense to me and I would 100% do the same. I love how, even though she wasn't the most outwardly confident, she had a high self-esteem and knew her worth.
Maxim you made me melt. Get you a man that will rent out a whole bookstore and rail you in it. He kinda didn't do anything wrong the whole book. He asked for consent for everything which just made him so much better. Like I would've been so confused. He didn't really grovel, because he didn't have to but he did do a big gesture and oh how that makes my heart weep.

I really enjoyed this book! Maxim and Evie's love story was amazing and emotional. There was so much that I loved about this book and this series. I'm very heartbroken that I am finished with this series.

Ohhh. Poor poor baby maxim. This car park scene made my heart hurt for Maxim.
A bit slow to get into at first, felt like it was going to be like every other sports romance.
You know what was different? Not Evie bc girlie was throwing out major PICK ME VIBES. But Maxim had some depth, more so than the usual I have major daddy issues boohoo. You know.
But anytime he had a scene with evie. The raging idiot came back as if he had no intelligence and the maturity of a 15 year old kid.
You know what I don't need to read every other chapter. Evie tucking a curl behind her ear and looking towards the ground. ( debbie ryans meme style). This happened and was described at least once every chapter. Girl if it bothers you that much TIE IT UP.
Ugh. Why is it with plus sized characters, or supposed plus size characters. They either have some sort internal fat shaming thing going on, or they body shame people on the smaller size. That is what Evie does quite a bit in this book. She would make digs at the girls , about their body size, dress size the length of their legs, and their eating habits.
For those on the plus size or smaller size. Body shaming is not on. And I hated how evie would pick at them, making digs bc they didn't look like her, as if her body and eating habits should be the norm. As if every woman isn't different. As if skinny (which is just as unhealthy as 'Fat') people didn't go through body dismorphia, or have their own issues with their body and food. Self love isn't about hating on others because they're not like. It's about being accepting of what you look like and how you are, and knowing that other people are gonna look and be different and that's okay. It's not about dragging others down. Which is what Evie has done on 3 occasions within the first 6 chapters of this book.
And this girl is an absolute Fisher. Why bother bringing up other women of his past, when A, you're not even together or made it known you want to be together, and b it's none of your business. SHE'S so jealous of his past as if Maxim can only like her. And she's so desperate for him it's unbelievable. And her saying "I didn't mean to throw my triggers at him", yes girl yes you did. You knew exactly what you were doing, you were trying to demonstrate you were different from his other woman because you were allowed in his home. I'm 7 chapters in and so close to it being a DNF.
And we have hit another low point. They just keep on coming. When asked by MMCs sister why she loves him, she replies because he is kinder than people give him credit for. REALLY. YOUR TELLING ME THIS IS ALL IT TAKES TO BE IN LOVE. But no she doesn't stop, she then goes on to diss the woman he's been with in the past. At this point the only reasons shes doing this is to prove that she can get with a man like him. That an athlete/ hockey player would choose the curvier girl, over the model type. And quite frankly its pathetic. It's not love it's an unhealthy obsession. She's incredibly toxic and manipulative.
I don't know hockey but can someone tell me if they're really viewed as celebrities as FMC claims MMC is. Bc realistically it's not like a hockey player can be compared to the likes of RDJ or Meryl Streep, or even Usain bolt, or lebron.
Ok so I stopped reading at chapter 7, but in all fairness I had an exam. After said exam (my final one for the year) I was going to go back to reading but then I thought do I really want to treat myself by reading this book. The answer. NO. It's a shame because even from the chapters I did read I could tell this book had promise. There were a lot of things that were different from your average sports/hockey romance. Maxims story was interesting enough to read on, and he had some character depth it would have been nice to see where his story went. But, Evie was awful and honesty she is the sole reason I didn't carry on with this book and the only reason this book isn't getting the 4 star I think it would deserve had I carried on reading.
So....liked the writing, liked Maxim and other characters that were introduced. HATED. HATED. HATED EVIE.
At this point I am a bit scared to read Axel in case the FMC turns out like she who shall not be named.

I didn't think I would love Maxim that much, honestly. But it turns out that he is one of the best book boyfriends. Sure, at the beginning, he couldn't make up his mind and when he left Evie twice only to then never talk to her about it was horrible and it cut deep. But then... well, let's just say he made up for most of it.
Loved both MCs, liked the plot. 4.5/5

This started off pretty strong for me. I was hooked, having fun! There was tension between the two of them that was hot. Lots of cute little things and gestures that Maxim did.
But then I got a little bored starting towards the middle-end. I loved the pining between Maxim and Evie when it all started but I think it declined when they got together semi-officially. There was miscommunication in this book which I did not like too much. I love friends to lovers but not on the side where they make themselves miserable by not wanting to "ruin" the relationship so they deliberately do these things to keep it platonic while also crying about it. Just talk.
Then the breakup in the final act: the reason felt flimsy. It seems like Evie didn't even appreciate all the gestures Maxim did to express how he felt about her. Maxim was at fault too. They've been friends since forever, he could've trusted her with some of his past trauma with what Evie wanted. But he has been abused most of his life by his father so I get why he's not as forthcoming.
The cast of supporting characters was great though! Mila, the ever supportive best friend. Sterling, the other supportive best friend/newly found half brother of Maxim. I didn't read the previous books, so all the name dropping of Maxim's teammates got confusing but it was okay! Just a little flip backwards to see who's married to who and boom. We're good.
I also liked that Maxim stood up to his father. Showed him who runs his life! That's a pretty good resolution on how he keeps bullying Maxim and his family.

Best Friend's Brother will forever be one of my favorite tropes and I had been anticipating Evie and Maxim for so many books, and damn did their chemistry burn the page. Gosh Maxim's backstory is heartbreaking, but I adored seeing him and Sterling finally fully come together as the brothers they were meant to be.

It’s not bad but the plot premise was weak. This author dragged out a whole story on the FMC’s insecurities which I was bored with by 40% and the other is of the MMC having the yips. But the cure was not addressed enough to suit my understanding of nearly every psychosomatic issue I’ve ever read about. When you are having a mental/emotional block like this books MMC was having it can’t be “cured”, for lack of a better world, by picking up a new superstition or by being distracted by dating someone new. The mind is ridiculously too complex for that to be a long term solution. The issue would always crop up again and then what? Constantly changing habits and partners would never have been sufficient to solve his problem.
The author never once noted that maybe his falling in love was enough to overcome a lifetime of abuse that was finally rearing it’s ugly. One single mention of that would have worked for me. I mean this is a romance book so what more can I expect. But she didn’t so.
The next issue that was in my opinion blatantly overlooked was the parental abuse the MMC had and still was receiving in this book. And NOT just by his father. The father was a stereotypical control freak that didn’t see anything wrong with his behavior. The author was text book in his character and therefore not worth more attention than that by me. However, his mother was also abusive. The fact that she didn’t protect her children from her abusive spouse but then actively placed blame of her husband’s infidelities on her children’s heads was simply abhorrent! But the fact that the MMC felt like he had to keep taking his father’s abuse even as a grown adult to protect his mother was the topping on that cake.
The author never once having the MMC address this nuance was disappointing. The MMC never came to the point where he realized his mother for what she was. Equally complicit. Or the fact that his mother never even trying to leave that marriage since her children were adults who lived away from her home shows that’s the relationship she valued over those of her children and therefore she didn’t need any protecting by the MMC. The MMC could have simply focused his efforts on his younger sister who was at least for college expenses financially dependent on these abusive parents. Which the MMC could have easily afforded to take over.
Basically all the reasoning in this book was unsound. Yes families have very complex dynamics but this author didn’t show any of that. All of these adult aged children of these parents hated them and they were grown/independent enough to have not needed any interaction with either of them. So what was the point?
As for the FMC’s insecurities. The author tried to give her a sob story from ONE bad sexual encounter she had her one and only time out the gate was not worthy of the extreme thoughts she had about not being good enough to hold the MMC’s interest long term. The FMC grew up with the MMC and loved him nearly all her life so it made no sense for her to believe he would be that shallow towards her. No matter what types he dated in the past he wouldn’t use her and discard her for no other reason than that the relationship had run it’s natural course and not because she wasn’t thin enough or picture perfect for a celebrity lifestyle like the one he lead. An insecure FMC and a grown man MMC allowing himself to be abused for no reason is not a good plot premise. It was a flawed storyline. 🤷🏻♀️
Otherwise I liked the characters well enough to say I wanted them to end up together but the nonsense drama of the tabloid article was so lame an excuse for a break up that I was done at that point. The FMC demanding to be told she was loved is not a good romance storyline. Not only that, but demanding love from someone when they are not ready to say it is pathetic. I lost major respect for the FMC and the author for that.
This is my first book by this author and I do want to try another book or two before I past judgement on whether she is a follow or forget kind of writer for me. So in essence it’s not a bad story just lacking some minor nuanced inflections to make it more reasonable, but still a readable story. I won’t read it again, but someone else might. Good luck.

This may cause triggers due to verbal abuse and hints of physical.
We all know if you read Sterling’s book, you would know that Maxim Zolotov is his biological brother. Let’s just say two years ago there was no love loss between those two. It was all most could do to get out of the line of fire. Well, what a difference a few years can make. They have focused that negative energy where it belongs on their father, Sergei Zolotov. He is still chastising, Maxim in front of his team, but, more covertly because her brother, Sterling, and his team, now have his back.
He gets this mysterious call from, Mila, Sterling, and his little sister. She wants, to ask him a favor, but he has, to promise, to say yes. He is in the locker room when, he takes the call, and he keeps repeating Mila’s name making, Sterling, start to worry. Then, when he asks her if she’s in trouble, and she says no he shakes off, Sterling. They both head off to a grueling practice.
