Whether Confucius had it right or not is of little consequence to Patricia Fisher right now because she’s on the run from multiple criminals plus the cruise ship’s security team who have orders to arrest her on sight.
Her arch nemesis, Angelica Howard-Box, has finally figured out how to win and she is going all out to make Patricia’s life a living hell.
Dressed in a pink anime kitten outfit, cut off from her friends, and forced to perform ridiculous tasks because Angelica is suddenly holding all the cards. It’s Patricia’s toughest challenge yet, and she must race against time if she wants to find a way to turn the tables.
Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.
When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.
Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.
This one had me laughing my bum off! The hoops that Patricia runs through to comply with the latest nutcase are hilarious! Of course, she's doing it for a worthy cause but it's just too funny! A great escape from the insane real world.
Wow! The crazy insane hijinks in here! It's been a long time since I read such a crazy, fun story. Its just pure fun, one of those guilty pleasure reads. You know the type. I think that cover tells you what kind of story this is and yes that cover is why I chose to read this. What could be better than some cute anime cat girl racing down the hallway of a cruise ship? Oh and she's supposed to be a detective too! Basically she had the whole ship going crazy in here.
So I did not read any of the previous books in this series yet. I just jumped right in with this one. I admit when I first started to read I did feel a tad confused as the story jumped right into the middle of action. And a lots of names were being mentioned. Who were these people?? But then the story went back to the beginning of this case and soon everything made sense.
The story itself is simple: an evil woman named Angelica stole the detective's two dogs. Don't ask why. But the thing is by having the dogs in her possession she can force the detective to do stuff. And so she makes these demands. The very first one was to make her dress up in that anime cat outfit and to color her hair pink. Evil, err?? Well from there the demands get worse. Way worse.
I had fun reading this. To be honest I don't remember the last time I read something this crazy. That is funny crazy. I was actually laughing at this and its very rare for me to actually laugh at stuff. I mean I laughed multiple times with this book. A few other books may make me laugh like one time: a little chuckle, but then that is it. Or I may find other books humorous but they don't actually make me laugh. But my eyes were watering from laughter with this one. Poor Patricia has some really rotten luck in here. Lots of accidents befall her as she is racing around the ship. At least one of them involves a wheeled device. I really laughed at that!!
I still don't know anything much about her team. They are just names to me. In fact most of the characters in here are kind of flat and one dimension - but I really didn't mind that very much as I was just enjoying the craziness of it all. The racing around in mass confusion and all of that. I didn't bother trying to solve anything. Just enjoyed the story. Once in awhile its good to read something "fun" in between other books and that is what this is.
I guess the title refers to the fact she has two dogs and Angelica was threatening to kill them??? Only the lowest of low people would want to kill a poor animal!!
But I read this one super fast. Just raced through it.
Patricia Fisher is having a really hard time because of her arch nemesis Angelica Howard-Box. She has stolen Patricia’s two dogs and is threatening to kill them if Patricia doesn’t follow her insane commands. First she has to dress up in a ridiculous outfit and is not allowed any contact with any of her friends to help her. Angelica is making Patricia make statements that are simply not true just to make her appear foolish.( Oh the act of jealousy can make some people lose their minds and Angelica is ticking that Box!!) Patricia is also trying to avoid criminals on the shop who are out for her blood. With no-one to help her Patricia must outfox both Angelica and the criminals to get her sanity back. Angelica may think she has won but she really doesn’t understand how Patricia’s brain works!!! I have yet to read any of Steve Higgs books and felt disappointed. I wish I could rate more than 5 stars. Would LOVE to see his works made into a tv series. Would be a sure fire winner every episode.
This wasn't the best of the Patricia Fisher series, but it was still nice to drop in on the characters and see what they are up to.
Patricia's arch nemesis, Angelica Howard-Box, is still on the Aurelia and determined to deliver the ultimate revenge on her - isolation from her friends, loss of her job, physical punishment, and possibly even death. She almost succeeds, too, after kidnapping the two dachshunds and forcing Patricia to carry out a series of tasks if she wants to see them alive again. Patricia finds herself trying to escape the security officers who believe she has committed several crimes.
I only "read" this book for completeness. I would've have cheerfully skipped it entirely if I thought I could. I know I'm in the extreme minority here, but I absolutely loathed the whole Angelica Howard-Box story arc/subplot. I can't in good conscience give a one star rating because Mr. Higgs is a very competent and readable cozy author, but I can't give more than two because I dislike the AHB storyline so much. It went on way too long and there's also such a thing as making a character too bad. In fact, I skimmed/skipped to the last three chapters and read those so I would have the "denouement" and after reading that I'm glad I did.
Read books in order! all of the Patricia fisher books. You will want to know how she got where she is now. Great adventure, oh what we do for our beloved Fur-babies. Can't wait to see if her high school enemy ....... no spoilers!! As Patricia was jumping through hoops for her fur-babies. Will her hacker be apprehended? What about the “insider”? Was happy .... a good tight group. no spoilers!! Will justice have her day in court, serving up justice as needed? Lots of nice adventures to further give the Ship’s detective. More puzzles to solve!
Steve Higgs is just an amazing writer. I started with Paranormal Nonsense because of the dachshunds on the cover. I had a mini sausage dog of my own and there's no turning back from that love. I adore Patricia Fisher and anxiously await each new book. This one worried me because of the dogs' involvement. Always trust a great writer! The book had a lot of humor and extra intrigue (no dachshund was harmed in the making of this work). Definitely worth the wait and the five stars.
Our heroine is remarkably good at solving mysteries but she’s even better at getting various villains or crazies to come after her. While “Professor” Noriega is in the background until the Aurelia reaches Rio, the crazy Angelica Howard-Box has plenty of time at sea to try to bring Patricia down. There are a number of wonderful belly laughs in this book as well as multiple scrapes from which Patricia has to extricate herself. You’ll enjoy it.
I received an arc copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Angelica has Patricia in her grip when she dog naps Anna and Georgie. Patricia will do anything to keep them safe from this madwoman. And Angelica has a devilish list Patricia must do and admit to before the return of her little loves can happen. Mr. Higgs has set the stage for many creepy, witty and embarrassing things Patricia has in store for her and the clever ways in which she comes out on top every time. A reader's delight. Highly Recommended.
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I really wonder how Steve Higgs puts together all these stories, one funnier than the other! This series - Ship's Detective - is one of the best I read so far. It has rhythm, good plots, funny tirades, and sassy Patricia Fisher, and First Dig Two Graves is a good example of all that. Well done!!! I downloaded a free copy of this book through BookFunnel and this is my honest opinion.
Fast paced story and Patricia is at her best, or is it worst when Georgie and Anna are signalled. Follow Patricia as she tries to free the sausage dogs from her arch enemy. A member of the crew is in on it and close to Patricia. Who can it be? I burst out laughing as Patricia performed "tasks" to get her dogs back. You will too.
This is one of the outstanding stories in the series. So complicated the twists she is put through, and solves. Yet, we are still left with an ongoing mystery of an old sunken ship and missing jewels. Steve Higgs, writes in so many different stories and does not disappoint.
Each Patricia Fisher book is better than the previous one. I suppose it helps to read them in order, because you really get to know the characters and their idiosyncrasies. Patricia is portrayed as a fallible human with a propensity for clumsiness and other relatable characteristics, which make her all the more endearing.
Angelica's persecution of Patricia hits a new high (or low) when she kidnaps the two dogs and holds their lives over Patricia's head if she doesn't do every humiliating or illegal thing Angelica can think of. En-route to fulfilling the crazy tasks, Patricia uncovers two other illegal activities onboard.
This series is so enjoyable. You get a great mystery, or several mysteries usually, and a lot of fun and laughter. The fact is that I find a lot of myself in Patricia, the clumsy part that is, so I can laugh without being the one doing the crazy things. Thanks Steve Higgs.
This was the 4th book in the Patricia Fisher Ship Detective series and I must say this series continues to amuse me and keep me reading! Her arch nemesis has stolen her two beloved dogs and has crazy demands in how to get them back. The antics Patricia goes through are beyond crazy, and while she’s at it she keeps solving crimes.
Patricia's old school enemy is on board and trying to make Patricia's life a nightmare. She steals her two dogs then proceeds to give her a list of assignments that border on dangerous if she wants to see her dogs again. She has hired a crew member to spy on Patricia. However justice rules on the end
This was an excellent book in the Patricia Fisher series. I felt a lot of anxiety over the events in the book. The author drew me into the story and I was constantly worried for Patricia. Thank goodness many things were resolved by the end of this book. The author did such an amazing job with all the surprises and twists in this book.
Patricia is caught by Angelica Howard Box and as she's trying to fill the assignments that Angelica has assigned her she is caught into solving something she wasn't aware of going on the Aurelia. Will she accomplish these assignments or will she find Angelica and her two dogs, that Angelica dog napped.
What a fast paced, thrilling story! So many humorous moments, yet enough tense moments too, to make it a huge hit. Patricia Fisher is hilarious, yet has cunning smarts. I am always happier after reading one of this series.
This one in the series is more an action adventure than a murder mystery. Patricia can fall into the worst poop and come out smelling of roses. It’s interesting to see the way the plot devleops in a very interesting yet believable manner
Another truly entertaining Patricia Fisher book has been added to the series. Patricia’s ability to get herself into, and out of, situation after situation makes for a story I could not put down.
Oh I so love these Patricia Fisher: Ship's Detective books 📚! This volume was especially humorous with mind pictures of each of Patricia's various costumes! Such FUN!
First Dig Two Graves a Patricia Fisher detective mystery
Mind games, Angelica put Patricia on, worried me that Patricia would stop listening to her. With all of her team working behind her and for not to long they were able to help Patricia win the game. Well done!
I laughed right out loud while reading this book. While over the top in places, I absolutely loved it. Angela Box is back in the picture and she is making Patty's life miserable. Her two dogs have been taken and Patty is being made to do some hideous stunts to save her dogs.
I am a fan of Steve Higgs’ work. This book , not so much. There are a number of scenes written in an attempt to make you laugh. I didn’t laugh. The book is basically about bullying and self entitlement. I could have happily missed this one.
Poor Patricia proves she will do anything to save those she loves. The characters are great and the villain is deliciously evil. the story is so well written that I could see each costume change to perfection in my mind. I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
