Rate this book
In the quiet town of Bainbridge Island, a storm of anxiety brews beneath the surface. Jayne Bartlett's troubled marriage and her husband Corey's sudden disappearance coalesce into a chilling puzzle that beckons seasoned investigators, Al and Jake.

Initially dismissing the case as another marital tiff, the duo quickly realizes there's more beneath the surface when days turn into nights, and Corey remains unreachable. With every tick of the clock, the atmosphere grows tenser, and the mystery deepens.

But as Al and Jake plunge into the heart of the case, another threat casts its shadow closer to home. News of daytime break-ins on the island leaves Jake on edge, fearing for the safety of his wife, DeeDee. Will their trusty dogs stand guard, or will danger breach their peaceful abode?

As clues lead them to a secluded campground surrounded by treacherous trails, they find themselves out of their depth, quite literally. Relying on the expertise of forest rangers might be their only hope to trace Corey's steps. But in the dense forest where secrets are as vast as the trees, will they find Corey in time, or will the woods swallow his whispers?

Dive into this gripping 20th installment of the Northwest Cozy Mystery Series, where every twist and turn leads deeper into a web of intrigue and suspense. Crafted by a USA Today Bestselling Author, this tale promises an expedition through the woods of mystery that fans won't forget.

I have read all 24 books and have enjoyed them all. In this book Cassie and Al have a baby girl. DeeDee is busy with her restaurant. Al and Jake get an office visit from a young woman asking for help in finding her husband. It seems he disappeared one morning and never returned. This book is about Al and Jake looking for this missing husband. They find the trail ends at a state park camp grounds. His car , tent, and belongings are found but not him. They decide to contact the rangers and its a good thing they did. The ranger find him hurt. It ends happily . The husband has cleared his head and reunites with his wife. There is an underlying story in that a burglar is loose in Bainbridge Island. The burglar breaking into homes during the day. DeeDee is spooked b/c she hears sounds but can’t find what causes it. The dogs are also curious to strange sounds. It turns out to be a mother cat and her kittens! This story was easy reading nut did not have the intensity that previous books have had. If this was the first book, I dont know if the reader would want to read book #2. It is not one of Dianne Harman’s best although te recipes are always great!

A man was not very happy--he and the wife were fighting over every little thing. He knew he had to get away from everything and everybody to try and figure out what he should do. Without telling anyone he took off before his wife was awake and drove to a place where he knew he could find peace and have time to think.

His wife ultimately got really worried--the police did not seem to be doing anything so she went to Al and Jake’s private investigation office and hired them to find her husband. She was positive that something was wrong! They took the job but nobody had heard from him-nor did he tell anyone he was leaving. They asked everyone he knew.

They eventually asked enough people enough times and found that he might have gone camping--but which campground? When they eventually found his campsite-something was really wrong and they got the park rangers involved. Sure enough he had hurt himself--they actually ended up saving his life.

Meanwhile back at home other things were going on!!

No fears, very happy endings on all accounts and some really great recipes at the end!

Another solid read from the NW cozy mystery series. In this one, a married woman seeks help from Jake and Al. Her husband has gone missing and she hires them to find him. They follow their leads, and meet some interesting folks along the way, before bringing the case to a successful conclusion. Enjoyed it!
