Harry Potter has been hiding in plain sight all his life, since he carries the soul-mark of Minister Tom Riddle on his arm—and a fulfilled soul-bond will double both partners’ power. His parents and godfather are fugitives, members of the Order of the Phoenix, and Harry is a junior Ministry official feeding the Order what information he can. No one, least of all him, expects Harry to come to the sudden notice of Minister Riddle, or be drawn into a dangerous game of deception.

I feel like a child whose corrupted mind has been cleansed but still tarnished. Reading this book felt like a twisted kind of enlightenment. Hear me out: In most stories where you have The Order of the Pheonix fighting for justice and fighting against the dark side, they generall operate from a place of moral righteousness, even if they make some sacrifices and take risks for ‘the greater good’. So, naturally, you start this book with that expectation — it’s what you know, and it’s what Harry knows too! That’s what makes the journey so compelling: it gradually peels back the layers to reveal that what you assumed to be the morally upright side is actually driven by fanatics following a madman cloaked in the illusion of persuing “the greater good”. Both Harry and the reader (hi, it’s me) go through this realisation together — slowly understanding that, shockingly, the Order is the villain. This slow-burn kind of revelation is probably my favourite part of the book! — that is if i put aside the struggle of enduring both Hermione and Albus’ nonsense about non-existent wars and dark lords.
And to further prove you that this was incredibly stimulating to my little brain, let me emphasise — this book is steeped in politics. Yes, politics! Imagine me, genuinely engrossed in discussiions about passing bills. Fucking absurd (in all fairness, they were passing magical bills, of course they were more exciting). But here we are, anyway. The truth is, it was so well written, and the dynamic between harry and tom was so perfect that their psychological chess games with the rest of the wizarding world made me flip my shit. Their combined power (both mental and physical) as soulmates made even politics fascinating to me.
I liked the Phoenix's magic. Tom Riddle was also really well written. The pacing was good and overall, i can say that i liked this fic. But Harry was, IMO, quite weak and wishy-washy. His parents were alive, and they were awful! Selfish and blindly following dumbledore. Ron and Hermione were stupid fanatics who got what they deserved.
