No one knew where the spores came from, or what had activated them. But they carried the most horrific, virulent disease ever to threaten the Spore 7.It started in a sleepy town. A peaceful, law-abiding citizen suddenly became a raging maniac, attacking anyone in his path. Within hours he'd become a savage, slime-secreting mutant of ferocious strength, and monstrous appetites. And by the time a medical team realised the spore infection was highly contagious—and incurable—the deadly fungoid had spread faster than wildfire.Amidst the seething chaos of a panicked nation rumours ran alien invasion, germ warfare, or a scientific freak gone haywire. Whatever the cause, time was running out, and there was only one devastating course of action the President could take...
An epidemic breaks out in a Northern California town. Is it an act of war by the Russians? Or is it a plague from outer space? People start to get very violent. Then they secrete some sort of sticky fluid. It's up to a middle aged doctor that just want's to be left alone, to solve the mystery.
This book starts off with a bang. The outbreak starts in the first few pages, so we don't have to sit around waiting. It looks like it's going to be the residents of the small town against the crazed mutants. It soon switches to a military exercise. This is the point that it gets a bit dull. We get an over abundance of lectures about germs and fungi. It sort of feels like I became a mycologist overnight.
This keeps you interested, but the ending is quite a head scratcher. A big cop out. An executive decision is made to deal with the outbreak. Then it's reversed as easily as asking for another piece of pie. This would have been so much better with the military and The President and his cabinet left out.
