Phantom's Thrall

Rate this book
A Reverse Harem retelling of "The Phantom of the Opera"... What if Christine didn't have to choose? When singer Christine arrives at the opera house, she encounters the lithe dancer Matthieu Giry, the handsome stage-hand Joseph, and her childhood sweetheart Raoul. Each of them is hiding secrets. As Christine wanders deeper into a sensual symphony of music and temptation, she discovers the mythical Phantom at its center... and the wicked freedom he offers will change her forever.

Do not read unless you're fully prepared for a deliciously debauched Phantom, an innocent virgin Christine, and an MMM+F reverse harem with crossed swords where all the relationships are important. There's also actual magic, and the Phantom's secret isn't quite what you think it is...

I mean, I knew what I was getting myself into. Dead dove, don't eat—all that.

Christine arrives at the opera house and gets swept up into the polycule of Erik, Mattieu Giry, Joseph Buquet, and Raoul de Chagny. She's peak naive virgin who must learn about the world of pleasure through these other men, all while the story also explains that dragons are the source of all magic and that the only way to use magic is by getting some from a dragon through... special fluids.

If you know what I mean.

It's straightforward, raunchy, and painfully anachronistic (girlie please wear a chemise under your corset). It's not particularly deep, and you're just going through the gist of the plot with smut thrown in all over the place. There are some Choices being made, not all of them great, but suffice to say I had a hard time putting this down because I couldn't help my curiosity about where the story was going. It's just kind of funny, really.

Does it feel vaguely sacrilegious, as a PotO stan? Yeah. But as someone who's survived 2000s-era Phantom of the Opera fanfiction.net, it's not that bad. It's, dare I say, refreshingly blasé about the source material and doesn't pretend to be anything but.

Respect for all reverse harems where each person in the harem is into everyone!

I decided to read this because I’m a big POTO fan! However, I wasn’t a huge fan of this book. It had moments of cringe (either dialogue or actions) Christine is wayyyy to naive. To the point that I rolled my eyes with her character multiple times. Also, I’m not 100% sure what the plot was? Almost every chapter was some type of RH scene (which I have no issues with 😂), but there was never an explanation why the Phantom wanted the RH? To gain power sure, but why??

What was the reason?!

I hate doing these types of reviews but I expected a lot from this book. It was literally scene by scene of the film up to the masquerade. Was not a fan of this one.

This was indeed a retelling I didn't know I wanted but I am very glad to have it. This was some very good smut, it followed the original source well enough but with a lot of added smut and a lot of strange fantasy things. I was only here for the smut but I did notice the weird fantastical, magical plot points. Interesting take.

Not At All What I Was Expecting

This was filthy and glorious and everything I never knew I needed from a Phantom of the Opera retelling.

Firstly, this is fantasy. It is not a contemporary retelling, for those of you who aren’t into fantasy. I’ve seen some people rate this book with low stars simply for being fantasy, which I think is incredibly unfair.

Moving on from that, I adore all of these characters in their own way. And how they’re all flawed and need something that this RH can only provide. A place to belong. And honestly, the ending that the author wrote really was quite wholesome and cute. It made my heart swell with happiness for these characters who have finally found peace.

But do be warned, this is an utterly filthy book. Swords ⚔️ is an understatement. The phantom, Erik, is certainly very convincing Angel.

It's a why choose retelling of Phantom of the Opera; retelling in the loosest sense of the word. It's light on plot and heavy on smut. I do like the poly relationship between with the MMMMF though.

Full disclaimer, I know literally nothing about The Phantom of the Opera. I decided to read this book because of the TWs (lol) and the fact that the ridiculously long title and awkwardly rendered cover just screamed porn with not even a vague sense of literary ambition. It's totally not that; it's actually one of the most romantic and thoughtful books I've read in awhile. I wouldn't call it dark; most of the warnings are things that happen but don't have a lot of impact in and of themselves because the author is so focused on emotion and introspection. That's not a bad thing!

I have almost no complaints besides a couple of spelling and grammar issues, some conveniences and inconsistencies, and a few euphemisms I got sick of. The prose is so good, far better than the vast majority of books available on Kindle Unlimited. The use of metaphor, consonance, and rhythm makes Phantom's Thrall a joy to read. The attention to small, smart details only adds delight to the overall experience.

Rue is deft at weaving the historical context with enough modernity to quell the many uncomfortable realities of life in the past that authors tend to conveniently forget. Obviously, anti-woman and anti-LGBT sentiments exist and are overcome by the characters, but it's such a non-production that the story isn't bogged down by predictable self-acceptance tropes. I don't mind M/M (I prefer it in RH, because probably-homophobic authors never include double and triple penetration and what is the point without it?!) but I'm usually not that interested or invested in the relationships. I liked them in this book; probably because they don't seem like a device for a female-centric fantasy and an excuse for men to be in the vicinity of each other's dicks? The male characters are unafraid of their "feminine" qualities and behaviors in a way that doesn't make them read as cliché (to me, anyway); a refreshing change to most RH M/M relationships involving the alpha-iest alphas that ever alpha-ed. I was fully on board with the men crying and expressing outright affection for each other, although the dom/sub dynamics I enjoyed at the beginning of the book sort of devolved into something a little too subtle and sappy for my taste.

The intimate scenes got somewhat boring and uneventful, in the physical sense—the payoff just wasn't there for me by the end—but I appreciated the overall work. Romance books never go into accurate/explicit detail about genitalia, all velvet steel this and glistening petals that—cringe. I love straightforward description, and I especially love it when it's not paying homage to tiny pink nipples and pretty polite pussies. Rue doesn't get all the way there, but she/they seem like someone who has actually experienced pleasure and explored her/their body. And I love nothing more than a man (in fiction and in real life) who isn't afraid to pay attention to a woman's labia, so cheers to lip nibbling.

Can't wait for the next standalone in the series!

“We will make the sweetest music together, and I will hear you scream in a voice so pure and perfect that the stars themselves shudder in orgasm.”

This a reimagining of the Phantom of the Opera and boy is it spicy goodness. Christine is so sweet, innocent, naive, and virginal. The Phantom is magical, mysterious, sexy, but also very dangerous. He has a plan and is not afraid to manipulate and use seduction to get what he wants. He may not go about getting it in the best way but he truly just wants a family and to be accepted. Joseph, Raoul, and Matthieu are all enamored with her along with the Phantom. This is a story of sexual awakening, accepting yourself, finding your family, and magic. It was fun book to read and I definitely enjoyed this retelling!

Let me start with, this book was smutty smut smut and I loved every minute lol. I would say Phantoms Thrall was 75 percent sex and 25 percent story but the author does an amazing job telling an enthralling story with that small percentage. Not only does she do a good job retelling the Phantom of the Opera but her added magic and fantasy are ravishing. The characters are all so vivid and easy to fall for and the ending leaves nothing left unsaid. I will definitely be checking out her other books in the future!!

A Phantom of the Opera reverse harem? That's all I needed to know before I dove into this head first.

I absolutely LOVED this book. It had everything I wanted from a spicy POTO retelling I wanted, and more. MMMM/F, magic, and dragons. Not much more a girl could ask for - well besides a phantom haunting the opera house, and four men lusting after me.

was really enjoying dark retellings, so i gave this a try. i wish i hadn’t. christine’s character was super cringey and if i wasn’t rolling my eyes at her i was laughing at her, i think she is at the top for the most naive. the phantom, erik, also had me questioning SO much.

the smut was there though, and it is a quick read if you can get past the fact that the plot was lacking some depth.

** a glowing spoiler free review below **

What can I say when I'm rendered speechless?

I was never a really huge fan of the Phantom of the Opera but this might have given me a change of heart. Not only was the story unique but the author used the original characters and plotline in a way that only adds to the ambiance.

And if this is their first reverse harem then color me surprised. I find that this subgenre can be difficult for some authors because their men aren't different enough, or written different enough, to truly stand apart from one another. Even when reading the separate POV's of each character they each have their own flavor, which is especially necessary when writing in the first person. Truly an exquisite specimen of the genre.

And the spice? THE SPICE. This is truly some of the filthiest, most delicious scenes I've ever read. And I've read...a lot.

Consider me a fan. Consider me hooked. I'll be (impatiently) awaiting more from this one.

The Phantom Retelling We All Need

This was exactly what it claims to be: a racy retelling that I didn't know I needed. I have always been a fan of the Phantom of the Opera and this was such a great retelling. This Christine never has to choose and gets to add a few more names to her harem as well. I was very impressed with the author's writing. She had a real talent for describing the scenes and world around the characters. It made sense when she explained in her author's note that she's already a writer but this is her first foray into reverse harem. I will definitely be checking out the rest of the books in this series (heck yes to the Pirates of the Carribean retelling!).

I’m going to leave this unrated since I knew I didn’t like Phantom of the Opera when starting this and I still don’t like it. Writing was decent, just full of tropes I’m not a fan of, so if you like PotO and any associated tropes, by all means, read it.

A great Phantom of the Opera retelling. I really got the spooky vibes and the opera house and all the characters translated well, even if they were a bit different for the sake of the reverse harem. It was still very clearly a retelling. Makes me want to watch the musical!

This book was much more smutty than I anticipated. The plot was definitely secondary. Nothing wrong with that, but I personally prefer more plot in my books. There really wasn’t any overarching conflict. The “plan” that the men had was kept a secret from the FMC and the reader until the very end and the small issue they did have to figure out in the end happened and was resolved in a couple pages. It was super face paced, which again, isn’t bad, but not my preference.

Even though the book was mostly focused on the relationships between all the characters (everybody was with everybody), I really did love the theme of sexual liberation. The FMC and one of the men were taught to be ashamed of their sexuality and desires and they were unlearning that throughout the book. They learned doing and loving who and what made them happy was more important than following societies expectations. They all found a family together. Found love and acceptance and it was really heartwarming to read. They had a very healthy polyamorous relationship.

The incorporation of dragons was a little surprising, but it was a fun fantasy style twist on the original story. It provided the framework for magic and bonds and some world building. There wasn’t a ton of details, but since it wasn’t a huge part of the book, I guess we knew what we needed to know. It also led the way for the FMCs virginity to be used as a plot device, which I am not a fan of, but fit the book and was explained. Just fyi.

pd: ahora me aparecen varias recs de libros con dragones y (??? tal vez los lea(???? is that a thing? im kinda into it now

This is definitely a retelling you didn't know you wanted!

I was familiar with Phantom going in, but I'll admit I'm not the biggest fan so I don't know all the ways that things worked. And this definitely fell a bit more into "inspired by" territory than a straight up retelling. I did like that it felt like it pulled in some elements from the original story though.

There was definitely a lot of smut and less plot. I would have liked to have more exploration of the dragons and mages and the Dragon Wars and everything. We got some explanations on things, like how Erik ended up in the theater and even some explanation on his magic but it also wasn't explained in depth.

Because the book is shorter and there was a decent portion devoted to the smut, we didn't get as much character growth as we could have. I did like Christine figuring herself out and finding the power she could wield. And Raoul figured out that he didn't need to follow society's wishes although that took a minute. I would have liked more on Joseph and Matthieu's pasts though. It seemed like Matthieu may have had some...issues with his mother but we never got to see it. And Joseph was kind of an enigma, although I did like the tidbit about his baking.

Overall, kind of smutty and less plot, but the spice was spicy and I enjoyed this!

Too short

I really enjoyed this and was very excited when I heard about it... but it was SO short.. like so much happens all at once with no time for plot development and no one has time for character development it was all very rushed- like they sleep on it and suddenly they're ok with everything... like this story happens over a like 2 week period and it's way too fast.. I love the premise I wasn't expecting the *spoiler* dragons and magic and all that but I liked it... I feel like the author had a wonderful idea but didn't give themselves enough time to develop plot or anything else (I feel like I'm repeating myself here with all this)

3.5/5 stars
2/5 spice
2/5 dark

It had a lot of sex yes and was a good portion of the book but it was not very spicy imo (theres a difference between a sex filled book and a spicy book).. I read a lot of spicy romance and dark romance and this was trying but didn't quite make it to that threshold for me to qualify it as a dark erotica.. maybe as an introductory book for those types of stories?
It gets points for being a RH especially as I was only expecting it to be a MMF not a MMMMF

When I saw on BookTok that this book was coming out, I pre-ordered it SO FAST.
This is a retelling of my ALL TIME FAVORITE movie, The Phantom of the Opera . I still have the DVD at home, scatched from excessive use. What made me love this movie was the music, I didn't care that much for the romance at the time. Now when I'm almost 30, I appreciate the story and the characters more.

The author made this polyamorous/(reverse harem between the three main characters Christine, Raoul and the Phantom + two workers from the opera house Matthieu and Joseph. It was better than I could imagine. I can still feel the essence of the movie in the book with the things added. It's a dirtier version and I'm all here for it.

The only thing I maybe, half-heartedly, complain about is that Christine is such a virgin that apparently knows nothing about her own or male bodies, but suddenly dirt as fuck. I'm not a fan of the overly virgin type. But other than that, perfectly written.

I almost wish we got more smut, but then the story would have not been the same.
Now I'm gonna watch this movie and think inappropirate things.

This book get’s a solid 4 stars ⭐️ from me! I’ve been loving why choose lately and the fact that this book was not only a why choose, but also a Phantom of the Opera retelling really drew me in. I LOVE the musical so I knew that the book was gonna draw me in and it did! I loved all the men and their dynamic with each other and Christine 😩💞✨!!! The smut!??! oh my gosh is was hot! Not gonna lie it was a bit more descriptive with Christine than between the guys but I didn’t mind it! It was super good 🤭✨There was a few reasons why I removed a star though! I felt like there wasn’t enough dual pov for the other characters (mainly Raoul in my opinion) and I feel like some of the plot and characters could have been built upon, I just wanted more!!! I’m definitely gonna pick up another book from this author since they have two other books that are also why choose 👀✨ so I’m looking forward to that.

I really only picked this up cuz it was somewhere on my Kindle recommendations. And as a fan of POTO, both book and musical I was interested.

It felt very cringe from the beginning. I was hoping for more plot but that was sorta barely there. The smut reverse harem was so cringe and uncomfortable. Especially with how unbelievably naive Christine was made out to be. Like how could she go from learning where her own stuff is and how to pleasure herself to suddenly being decent at jerking off a guy? And in general I felt uncomfortable with a lot of the scenes anyway.

A lot of the wording could've been changed. As a whole I feel this should've been polished up more before being put out there.

Also, what was with the weird thing of Erik (the phantom) being half dragon that could shift? I really felt that wasn't necessary. Or we could've had a whole story that was better polished for that kind of thing.

I'll leave it here cuz I don't wanna rant to much.

um…phantom retelling where? was this set in modern times, was this set in the original time period? this is another one of those “retellings” that’s blantenly using the fact the book is public domain to get around copyright of basing it on other Phantom adaptions.

No build up at all. Christine goes from not knowing where her parts are to being a super freak in the sheets. I like virginal fmc and this had none of the cute awkward first time stuff. Characters are so boring and one dimensional and it’s unclear how they know each other. The weird “oh he’s not deformed actually he’s a dragon actually” made me laugh out loud.

If you’re reading this because you like RH plots sure go ahead. If, like me, you’re reading Phantom retellings because you like Erik/the story, skip this one. It has none of the plot or stakes or charm of the original novel. You could change the names of every character and you’d have no idea it was a Phantom retelling.

I’m a huge fan of The Phantom of the Opera, I even love the spinoff tales everyone has been making the past few years. The story to this one was just okay. It was a short book so it didn’t have a big story (I’m a big story person, even in my spicy books) so that’s knocked my rating quite a lot. This book ended in a trope that so many spicy books end that I know a lot of people don’t like so keep that in mind before you read this one. Would I read it again? Honestly I don’t know. It’s a book that will stay on my shelf for now.

A quick read. The ending seems somewhat rushed into a conclusion, a sweet conclusion, but I feel like there's a chunk missing before it.

I picked this up because of my love of the Phantom musical. I did find myself unsure of it during the first half, but I breezed through the remainder in under 3 hours, and it was okay.

There is plenty of spice, 3.5/5 on the spice-o-meter.
I did raise my eyebrows at the earlier scenes where it felt they were taking advantage of the virginal fmc. Especially because of the way her innocence is played up to the point where she is infantile, it was mildly unnerving.

Overall, a short read that could have done with being longer. More character development and exploration of dynamics. More about the lore that is briefly touched upon. We know that the eradication of mages and dragons happened, but I want to know more.
