Sugar Land Saints #1

Quarterback Sneak

Rate this book
The boundaries of our friendship are tested and lines are crossed.

I’m in love with my best friend.

There wasn’t an exact moment when I fell for him. It was something that grew and evolved over time. He loves me back, but it’ll never be more than platonic. It can’t be because he’s straight.

Then one night he kissed me and left me with more questions than answers. The very next morning my trust was shattered by a family secret. I’d been lied to my whole life. He was by my side through it all, offering support when I needed it most.

How can I risk losing a friendship that held me together when I was falling apart?

He friend-zoned me.

Four years ago, I gathered enough courage to kiss my best friend. What I’d hoped would be a pivotal moment that would start a new kind of relationship between us was over before it began.

His world was upended, so I put my feelings aside and stepped back into my role as a friend he could count on.

He wasn’t ready then, but now it’s time to find out if he’s willing to take a chance on us being something more.

We’ve been friends, roommates and teammates, but I want him, body and heart.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Sadly A Bust*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

The first book centers around the best friends Rush Jaggers (18 in the beginning, then 22) and Torin ‘T’ Hopkins (same age as Rush). When a secret came out about Rush, Torin was sent back to the friend-zone, the kiss never brought up again. But for Torin, it's not enough, he needs more. Overall, I shouldn't have changed my mind about this one. I need to start trusting my instinct. I knew beforehand that I wouldn't like this book - even shelved this books as a "checked won't read" - yet I still changed my mind and read it. Why? Because I liked Sugar Land Saints book 2. A lot. So I thought; maybe I was too quick to judge. But I wasn't. The book lacked chemistry, it lacked "feelings", it lacked a plot. Nothing happened. The sex wasn't even hot. So yeah, the read was a bust. Sad, considering book #2 in the series was quite enjoyable.

Other Characters:
John, Rush's uncle. Though the truth is that he's Rush's biological father.
Joel, Rush's father and John's brother. Technically, he's biological Rush's uncle, but Joel adopted Rush, so he's legally his father.
Angela, Rush's mother.
Shaw Wakefield and Bishop Shepherd, players of Sugar Land Saints.
Nash, plays the same position as Shaw; a wide receiver (Bishop's defense).

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (New Adult) Contemporary Romance (M/M).
Series: - Series (Semi-Standalone), Book One.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Bishop Shepherd.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Most likely.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Yes, book 2.
Will I read this again in the future? -No.
New Rating - 2 stars.

description I usually really like this author a lot. She writes very enjoyable M/M books that are well written, low angst, and easy to read. That said, this one didn't "WOW" me. I think maybe it was because it was so short, but the story felt choppy and underdeveloped. Stuff is thrown at us in the beginning (a kiss, parent drama), and then suddenly it is FOUR YEARS later? Four years and nothing happened between them? And it wasn't like they were apart. They LIVED together. Hung out together. Saw each other EVERY day for those four years. Honestly, I am not even sure why the story needed to be set four years after the beginning of the book? It didn't seem to be necessary to the plot, and it left a pretty large hole in the story. It also left me wondering whether either had slept with other people in that four years??

So yea, this one wasn't this author's best work. However, I still love her to bits and will definitely give the next book in the series a try.

MM Romance
Best Friends To Lovers
2 Stars ⭐️

A To Z Book Title Challenge: Q

I love besties to lovers but this was lacking even for a novella. I just felt absolutely no connection between these two at all. The book starts in the past with Torin and Rush leaving a high school party their senior year. Rush is madly in love with his ‘straight’ best friend but thought nothing would ever come of his feelings until Torin kisses him and he’s dumbfounded. But some drama happens with Rush’s family the next day and their romance stops before it can begin. Fast forward 4 years, they are roommates and both on the football team, they’ve never discussed their kiss and have dated other people over the years but the want between them is still there.

This book didn’t work for me because I felt no chemistry between them as friends or lovers. This was too football forward and yes I know it’s a sports romance but part of why I didn’t connect to them was because there was more game play than relationship development. Instead of them going to practice, lift training, watching tape and playing games, I wanted time shared between them so I could see what their relationship was like even as friends. Having to read monologues of random shit like the kind of lift Rush had on his truck and how that changed how they could get in and out of it instead of any thoughts about each other bugged me. I just needed so much more than I was given!

The best part of this book was the other characters. I definitely want to read their stories especially Bishop and Shaw.

I think my feelings about this book can be summed up with this last thought. I just realized I wrote this entire review using the name ‘Cash’ instead of ‘Rush’ so I had to go back and change it. I just finished this an hour ago so the fact I can’t remember his name shows how forgettable this book is. I probably won’t remember I even read it in a week. 🤷🏻‍♀️ oh well.

Short but sweet best friends romance

This isn't very long but manages to stick a four year time jump in it to bring the two MCs up to college age.

I liked that there wasn't any stupid angsting, there's a bit of a drama at the start and then, after the jump, the narrative is basically bringing the two together.

They're sweet and a believable pairing but I have to say the repeated mentions that Torin was only sexually attracted to Rush did grind my gears a bit. I'm not a fan of 'gay only for you' specifically as a trope as it rumbles a bit close to bi-erasure in a lot of cases.

There's also some set ups for the likely other pairings in this series and I'm looking forward to reading those.

I love a good MM friends-to-lovers book but sadly this one didn't do it for me. There really wasn't anything interesting happening to keep my focus and I felt zero chemistry between these characters. I felt like it was missing the tension and actual romance. Also the random family drama thrown in right away only to skip four years ahead with no development gave me whiplash and kind of made me mad that we didn't get to see the fall out from the characters first kiss. It was like we were giving this really interesting scene and then the story moved on like it didn't even happen.

I needed a book that started with the letter Q for a challenge. I searched Amazon and this one came up in the results. And much to my surprise (and happiness!), it was MM romance!

For a novella, I felt this quick read gave me a lot more than some shorter stories do. I liked the characters and the story didn’t feel rushed. I didn’t catch too many feels though, but I’m very glad I read this!

The 4-year jump from high school to college was a bit much, especially for nothing to have happened between them during that time. That being said, I enjoyed this story enough to want to read the next books in the series. (HELLO Shaw & Bishop!!)

This was a new-to-me author and I enjoyed her writing.

Short, underdeveloped, lacklustre. This whole setup and execution was a bit disappointing. I liked the characters and the potential was there, but so much is ignored it’s hard to recommend this as anything but a time-filler if you’re between books.

Safety:
• no talk about previous partners but I assume they weren’t virgins
• first time bottoming for both
• only 1 of them has been with a man before (gay for you situation with H2)
• between their first kiss in high school and when they got together in their senior year of college, both dated other people. H2 only dated other people after H1 started dating. The relationships didn’t seem serious at all.
• No talk about when their last h/u was but I assume it’s been a while
• vers
• no om/ow drama

This book was rough for me. I did not have a connection with these characters. Sure they were best friends, but a sexual connection, yeah I didn't feel that. It felt rushed, and some things just didn't make a whole lot of sense. The whole thing with Rush messing up a play just wasn't as big of a deal as the book made it out to be. Not to continually be punished by the coach for a bad snap.

Either way, I'm not sure how I feel about continuing the series. I need more character growth and connection and if the rest of the series goes off this book, I might be in trouble.

2.5🌟 Took Suspension of Disbelief to the Maximum Extent Possible

" I want to roll my eyes right now but the doctor said if I keep doing it, my ocular muscles might spam and eject my eyeballs. " Tina Fey

Quarterback Sneak have the same dynamics as a MF relationship . The synergy between two men, regardless of their sexual orientation it's very different from the synergy between a man and a woman.

For instance, Rush constantly , put his hands on Torin's , lower back to guide him, while walking. Drive him everywhere, buckled his seatbelt and most of the times carry Torin's gym bag , just to name a few examples .
Mind you, Torin is a healthy , 20 years old man, straight , 200 pounds , 6 feet , College Quarterback Football All Star. And that is before their friendship became sexual.

In summary, here is a book presented as a GFY (Gay For You) MM story yet reads and have the sensibility of a MF story. Plots have lots of holes, dubious far fetched conflicts and resolutions. And folks, willing suspension of disbelief can be stretch until certain point.

In the positive side, story is hot and steamy.

DNF 42%. It just wasn't doing it for me. It was a good start, but I think Eden Finely has me spoiled. I didn't like how openly gay/bi practically everyone was. I love the thrill of self discovery and then fear of outing for what it would do to a sports career. This book totally by-passed that. I also thought the relationship between Torin and Rush didn't hold the right kind of tension. They both openly loved each other and physically craved each other. AND they lived together. Not only does it seem impossible for 2 people to not fuck under such circumstances but it takes away from the sexual tension. I need my athletes to secretly lust for each other. Otherwise there's no thrill of 'do I love him?' 'does he love me'? 'do I push him away? what are we doing?' 'how can I make this work?' Bottom line this was a gay sports romance without any of the signature things I LIKE about gay sports romance.
I'm sure it evolves into a decently cutesy romance but it just wasn't what I was hoping for.

3 stars!

This was an easy book to read, likable characters, low angst and friends to lovers plot. And because of these three things this book was an okay read for me.

It's a difficult start when on the first few pages you read about a kiss between a bi guy and his absolutely straight friend with almost to none history of their mutual chemistry. It happened out of nowhere and it was a good thing the author slowed things a little bit after that. I just prefer my books angstier and more emotional.

I just felt the story underdeveloped. There were a few things mentioned about the people around Rush and Torin, the families they had, but all the time I was reading, I felt I needed more information. Not about the surroundings but about their characters. I wanted them deeper and more complex. Both of them were too light as characters, which made them unbelievable.

A man stands, shadowed, with his head bowed while wearing (what looks like) protective gear associated with several contact sports. The dual font title is okay, but the script font fades a bit and is not as easily legible. When browsing thumbnail size book covers, looking for one to catch my eye, this one really would not do it. Luckily, it was highlighted in one of my favorite author’s groups and caught my attention that way & I enjoyed the synopsis.

POV ~> Alternating first-person

This is the first book that I’ve read from Baylin Crow and found the writing style to be very smooth and the storytelling to be quite pleasurable. QUARTERBACK SNEAK is the first in the series and introduces several characters that I imagine will be getting a story after this.
So, Rush is known to be bisexual but Torin’s always been straight. But, he’s willing to be gay for Rush.
Four years ago, they shared a single kiss before some news sent Rush into an emotional tailspin and Torin stepped back into his FRIEND role. Rush was too afraid to cross that line again and potentially lose his best friend.
They went off to college together, played college ball together. Torin had had enough waiting. It was time to make a move.
I liked the lead couple and enjoyed most of the secondary cast. The chemistry was good. Dialogue was smart and interactions felt natural. The big conflict felt a little blown out of proportion, but hey… I guess everyone reacts differently. Predictability was low. The conclusion was good and it provided a very solid HFN that I feel certain will continue in the background of following additions to the series.
I enjoyed this one and would definitely be interested in reading more from this series.

Short novella perfect for a quick does of cutesy.

You’ve got football. You’ve got best friends. There’s no angst. There should be angst because they waited so long to be together, but it’s a novella so all that is skipped.

So this mm romance has a GR rating around 3.59 stars, which for me is a LOW rating. I have too many books on my TBR to take a chance on something that seems mildy interesting. BUT I needed a “Q” book so I finally got a reason to try a lower ranked book.

And I actually enjoyed this one! I have to say I disagree with many of the reviewers. They said there was no relationship development and I feel like there was but not in a traditional sense. There’s a lot of implication here and heavy emphasis on each individual character. Both guys were in love with the other, so when they finally came together, it was quick and natural. To me, that’s development because you can see and FEEL it.

Torin is the 200 pound quarterback and best friend of the giant center, Rush. It starts off in the past where a passionate kiss is overshadowed by a shocking secret reveal that puts any interest on the backburner. Now 4 years later and seniors in college, Torin is acting different and Rush is worried he’ll lose his best friend.

It took a little bit to get there but it was pretty low angst, really sweet, pretty sexy, and had a great ending. I’m glad I finished it and I’ve even added more from the series to my TBR.

With a slow build to their sexy conclusion, Torin and Rush have a great connection and friendship. We don't get enough of that on the page, sadly, and even their romantic evolution is sudden because of all the denial, withholding, and pretending. Their first attempt at more than a friendship was aborted by "good" intentions and unclear motives for Torin's change and further put on hold by some family drama from Rush. I'm not sure why that information was so huge and necessary for prolonging the relationship angst. It seemed like making a huge deal out of something that was never discussed again until the very end when things kind of changed for the better. Torin and Rush were believable together, but I wish it had more depth. I thought they were sweet together once they were all in and they did have chemistry, though not as sexy as others of Baylin's stories, but overall it worked. I'll definitely read more from the series because the other characters were quite compelling, even from the sidelines.
