In 1977, I attended a 5-week residential stuttering clinic. Top therapists in their fields worked with us in small and large groups to help us battle and (hopefully) overcome our disfluency.Summer 1977, Geneseo, New York. The therapy was intense, living in the dorms, attending hours and hours of lectures over a five-week period, mixed in with stutterers of varying ages and all walks of life.
I hope my journaled experiences and the useful tools I learned there are fun and interesting to all those who stammer or know someone who does. Charts and graphs are included, which I hope the reader finds useful. Signed, Robert I. Beck
A note from the Publisher.
WHAT IS STUTTERING AND IS IT A COMMON PROBLEM? Stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by repetition of sounds, syllables, or words. The individual knows what he or she wants to say but has difficulty producing a normal flow of speech. Stuttering (sometimes referred to as stammering) may be accompanied by “struggle behaviors”, such as blinking or lip tremors. Stuttering causes difficulty in communicating, which can affect the person’s quality of life in a myriad of ways, including concerning interpersonal relationships and even fiscally through impeded job performance. Stuttering may also interfere with a person’s career opportunities. Stuttering affects around three million Americans in all age groups.
WHY THIS BOOK?Author Robert I. Beck kept this hand-written journal while staying in the dorms at the State University College Speech Clinic. Decades later, it turned up again and it occurred to him that other people who stutter (or love someone who does) might be edified and even encouraged to read about his experience overcoming the disorder. Robert contacted our publishing company, and this book is the result. It is our hope that his prediction comes true, and you are blessed by reading this material.
