Shun Umezawa (うめざわしゅん, Umezawa Shun) is a Japanese manga author.
Umezawa debuted in 1998 in the magazine 'Young Sunday'. He usually works for seinen manga magazines, aimed at a mature audience. His short stories have been collected in books, most notably Utopias (2006), 1 & 99 (2012), A Pantyhose Like World (2016).
He is best known as the author of the manga Darwin's Incident, which has been serialised since 2020. The series has received multiple accolades, including the Manga Taishō Grand Prize in 2022, the Manga Excellence Award at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival and the BDGest’Arts at the Asian section of the 50th Angoulême festival in France.

El amanecer en el planeta de los simios se cruza con la enésima historia de chavalito con problemas de adaptación al instituto y una de terroristas ambientales de los 70 (aquí son veganos). Sólo conocía a Umezawa de sus colecciones de historias cortas y lleva muy bien el inicio de algo más extenso. Aquí hay sustancia y algo de provocación.

Alianza de Liberación Animal (ALA) es un grupo radical analista que asalta un laboratorio de experimentación animal para rescatar a estos seres. Allí encuentran a una chimpancé a punto de dar a luz. Lo que nace es el primer híbrido entre chipancé y humano, "humancé", de nombre Charlie. Tras 15 años, Charlie comienza el instituto y a conocer gente pero la ALA ha ideado un plan para él y ahora quiere cobrar la ayuda prestada. Hará todo lo posible para atraer a Charlie, aunque sea cometer los planes más retorcidos.

El protagonista de esta historia es Charlie, un adolescente de 15 años mitad humano y mitad chimpancé. Tiene las características de ambas especies muy potenciadas, por lo que es muy listo y cuenta con una enorme fuerza. Su vida en el nuevo instituto será difícil, sobre todo porque el ALA comienza a realizar una serie de atentados. Además los problemas se suman cuando se descubra que es vegano y el ALA vaya hasta su misma casa.

Este manga ha ganado el Premio Manga Taisho 2022 y plantea una serie de temas muy importantes. En primer lugar la experimentación animal, uno de los temas centrales en los que va girando esta historia. ¿Hasta qué punto es lícito experimentar con animales para tener nosotros una vida mejor? En torno a esto se crea un grupo radical para atacar estos experimentos. Se abre una brecha entre el bien y el mal o entre lo correcto y no, el bien justifica los medios. También hay un predominio de la vida vegana, qué beneficios tiene, cómo se hace y todos los estigmas que conlleva esto. Por último, la vida adolescente en un instituto americano junto con todos sus problemas.

Este manga es una pasada y engancha desde el principio. Tiene una trama muy actual, con muchos subtramas y muchos temas importantes contados desde múltiples vistas. La escritura también es muy fluida, con unas conversaciones amenas y muy reales. Y el dibujo es realmente bueno, muy detallado, bien perfilado y con mucho dinamismo. Un manga necesario que hay que leer.

Charlie just wants to attend a normal high school and get a normal education, but Charlie's main problem is - he's not normal! Charlie is the world's first ever Humanzee! Born in a California lab 15 years ago then freed by the ALA -- The Animal Liberation A​llliance -- Charlie has been trying to live a quiet life with his mom and dad in a small town in the Midwest, but all that changes when the ALA sets its sights on Charlie once again. When the ALA begins executing violent attacks in cities across the nation, folks start to wonder if it's safe for Charlie -- and for their own children -- for him to try to be a normal teenager.

This title packs a serious punch in examining the rights of humans and doesn't shy away from some heavy political topics. The story tackles "us vs them" and NIMBY (not in my backyard) attitudes that have been prevalent in recent years in US politics and also includes some comments on violent police and a "shoot-first, ask later" proclivity. Through all of this, Charlie is an innocent who has an interesting way of seeing the world. The way he questions the world's inequities will encourage readers to have some critical reflection as well. This is a manga that will get under readers skin while also satisfying the need for action and interesting characters.

Because of the violence, the age of the characters, and the more mature concepts, this title would be better suited for high school audiences.

I'm not really sure what to make of this one.

On one hand the idea of this Charlie character being half human half chimp is awesome. There's some hilarious moments of him trying to blend into life and school. Of course assholes not being nice to him but that's for any kid different really. I liked all the stuff with Charlie and the fish out of water situations. I wasn't a major fan of the overall terriost plot and didn't really feel that intriguing for me. It's kind of between a 3 and 4 but I'll bump it to a 4 because I enjoyed Charlie and the art a lot.

Human-chimp hybrid in a world of terrorists, 1.5/5

The writing was simultaneously good and bad. Some of the premise and dialog were solid, but there was this weird disconnect where it feels like its an alternate history where vegans did 9/11 because people's conversations seem so alien. It takes on this weird forced tone because it wanted to encapsulate an idea but couldn't fit it in organically. That disconnect would throw me out of the story because it felt didactic more than narrative. It ultimately left a net negative impression.

wasn’t the Bee Movie enough?

this was like Planet of the Apes but take away any nuance about animal welfare and human violence and throw in an anti-vegan plot, a disgusting human-animal romance, an awful art style, and a vaguely racist subplot. one of my best friends said it best, “for this book, i’m pro-book-banning.”

i wish i could say i’m DNFing, but i’ll be following through until the end. cheers to my book club, but for the worst books. stay tuned for my suffering! ✨✨

Estados Unidos, Laboratorio de Investigación Biológica Strald, California. Un grupo radical armado llamado Alianza de Liberación Animal (A.L.A) asalta un laboratorio donde se estan haciendo experimentación con animales y, en medio de la puesta en libertad de estos, encuentran a una chimpancé herida y embarazada. Los terroristas salvan a la chimpancé y, meses después, en un laboratorio de Misuri, da a luz a un híbrido entre humano y chimpancé al cual bautizan como humancé, el primero de la historia. Quince años después, el humancé Charlie, el cual ha sido criado por el matrimonio formado por Hanna y Bert, comienza a ir al instituto de Shrew, lugar en el que vive. En su primer día, Charlie conocerá a Lucy, una chica resuelta que se siente atraída por lo que es Charlie, y otros compañeros más o menos amistosos e intrigados ante el humancé. Su nueva vida de estudiante comienza a truncarse cuando se da un ataque vegano de la A.L.A en Nueva York quienes, abanderando el derecho a la vida de los animales y la lucha contra los "come carnes", quieren reclutar a Charlie para su causa.

Todas las ideas preconcebidas que tenía sobre el manga, se fueron al garete a partir de la quinta página leída.
Me lo bebí y lo disfruté lo indecible. Tanto, que ya tengo encargado el tomo 2 para saber cómo continúa la historia.
No sabría decir qué es lo mejor de este tomo, si la expresividad del trazo, la historia que cuenta, el tema que trata, o cómo hace una crítica tan fidedigna de la sociedad actual. Desde luego es un manga que se merece 100% el premio Taishô que le han concedido.
Si tienes algún tipo de dudas, léelo, por favor. No te va a dejar indiferente.

El personatge del Charlie, primer humanzè de la història, és intrigant, curiós i amb molt marge per desenvolupar-se. En aquest primer volum tenim una introducció al naixement del Charlie i el context que l'envolta (amb el grup terrorista de vegans ALA), així com l'inici de curs a un institut de l'Amèrica profunda. Com a única petita pega, em sembla que els debats filosòfics i morals es toquen d'una manera un pèl superficial, però com a tirallonga de pensaments inconnexos i estereotípics. Amb ganes de veure cap a on ens porta aquesta sèrie ♥

Que gozada cuando un libro cae en tus manos, lo lees y no encuentras nada a mejorar o criticar. Es perfecto en trama, ritmo, historia, temas tratados, personajes e incluso en el cliffhanger final.

El arte (de un estilo muy realista) solo ayuda a alzar aún más la calidad de este primer volumen.

I gotta say, it seems to be a pretty decent manga about a humanzee (chimpanzee and human hybrid) named Charlie who just wants to fit in the human race just as much as everyone else but has human villians wanting to badly kill him after a sudden terrorist attack that blames the monkey race for the cause. I also thought his sidekick human friend Lucy was pretty cool and a likeable character.

Definitely check this manga out if you want some monkey business 🐒🦍🦧

#Arranca2024 como año lector. Y lo hago con un #manga de #cienciaficcion que juega con la evolución y plantea preguntas desde la visión de un personaje genial: Charlie, el primer humancé.

Distrito Manga nos trae, en esta primera entrega, un manga de Shun Umezawa que se lee en un suspiro, con algunos golpes de acción, un buen dibujo y gran guión. A través de la visión de Charlie, se nos plantean reflexiones curiosas que nos harán dar alguna vuelta de tuerca a diferentes puntos de vista.

Voy a ir buscando los siguientes números porque tengo claro que voy a continuar trepando junto a Charlie

I picked this one up because it's a popular release here and every person talks positive about it.
I found in this one some good things and other things I liked less.

The story is indeed interesting. It's a brand new concept and I liked the originality and the idea behind this series. At some point tho, it started to be a little repetitive and the whole story seemed to got stuck on a single mission only, which is to capture our main protagonist.

Now, this was utterly predictable and the part I liked less of the story.
Despite it got my attention, I can't deny that at some point I lost interest thanks to the path it took at some point.

J’ai vu un bon paquet d’avis passer sur ce manga et tout ceux que j’ai pu lire, ce n’était que des avis positifs. Déjà que ce titre m’intéressait, voir tout ces avis m’a encore plus donné envie de découvrir cette histoire. Et bien je peux vous dire que je comprends complètement tout ces avis qui encense le premier tome. Je les rejoins clairement parce que ce tome était tout simplement incroyable, j’ai énormément aimé l’histoire mais aussi les réflexions plus profondes derrière. C’est vraiment un titre que je vous conseille, vraiment, je l’ai trouvé tout simplement dingue et je suis déjà très très impatiente de découvrir la suite surtout avec une fin pareille!

Dans ce premier tome, on va suivre le personnage de Charlie. Il y quinze ans, des activistes armés militant sous le nom de l’Alliance de libération des animaux ont pris d’assaut un institut de recherche biologique dans lequel était détenue une femelle chimpanzé sur le point de mettre bas. Curieusement cette dernière a donné naissance à un humanzee, un hybride mi-humain- mi-chimpanzé. Quinze ans plus tard, on retrouve Charlie élevé par des parents humains, doit à présent entrer au lycée. Il va y faire la connaissance d’une jeune fille, Lucy. Mais les activistes de l’ALA devenus plus extrémistes que jamais, projettent d’amener Charlie à rallier leur groupe terroriste.

Que dire sur ce manga! Il y en a des choses! Alors déjà j’ai vraiment beaucoup aimé l’histoire ainsi que les personnages. C’est quelque peu déroutant au début de se dire que Charlie est un hybride mi-humain mi-chimpanzé. C’est assez perturbant même je dirais! J’ai adoré son personnage par contre, je le trouve hyper touchant. Il est surtout très intelligent. Il a passé sa vie a être sous le feu des projecteurs, à être le centre de l’attention. Il est médiatisé depuis sa naissance, fait beaucoup parler autour de lui. C’est un sujet d’étude depuis sa plus tendre enfance, Charlie est habitué mais il fait également la même chose avec les humains. Il décortique le monde qui l’entoure et soulève pas mal de questions autour de la condition humaine.

L’autre chose mis en avant dans ce manga, c’est le terrorisme. En effet, l’ALA qui a libéré la femelle chimpanzé qui a mis bas Charlie sont devenus plus extrémistes que jamais. Ils n’hésitent même plus à faire des attentas à la bombe, comme on peut le voir avec le restaurant. Peu importe si il y a des enfants, il faut bien des dommages collatéraux pour faire entendre leurs causes. Ce groupe d’extrémistes prônent le veganisme. Charlie étant vegan comme ses parents se voit montrer du doigt. Il est mis dans le même panier que ce groupe de terroristes. Je trouve ça bien dommage d’englober tout le monde alors qu’il ne s’agit que d’un groupeen particulier. Comme le fait remarquer Lucy lorsque ses camarades s’en prennent à Charlie, elle dit à Trevor « Toi aussi Trevo, t’es un humain comme ces terroristes » mais ce n’est pas pour autant qu’on met tous les êtres humains dans le même panier. D’ailleurs, j’ai beaucoup aimé le personnage de Lucy et la relation qu’elle noue avec Charlie. C’est une véritable amie pour lui et elle le soutient quoi qu’il arrive.

Ce premier tome nous donne matière à réfléchir et pas qu’un peu. On a clairement beaucoup de réflexions dans ce manga qui nous pousse vraiment à réfléchir. Et ça j’ai vraiment beaucoup aimé, les différents messages qui se dégagent de cette histoire etc. Ce n’est pas un coup de coeur mais ça aurait pu vraiment en être un. J’ai vraiment apprécié cette lecture et je suis déjà plus qu’impatiente de découvrir la suite des aventures de Charlie. Surtout lorsque l’on voit cette fin pleine de suspense. C’est une de mes meilleures découvertes de l’année si ce n’est la meilleure même!

It's an interesting concept and the comic store guys really sold it saying it was a really intelligent exploration of the themes but I think maybe if you've heard these arguments once it comes off a little flat when they're said so flatly here? Mangas are just often written so badly... You don't have to say an apple is an apple all the time.

2.5/5 rounded up because its got alright art and the author has clear writing chops. But its not for me. I kinda don't understand the hype seeing as this has won multiple awards. Like, I was kinda okay with it but the terrorist bits just kept dragging it all down and the action stuff. I wish it focused more in the parts that were more relaxed and less action-y.
The story is alright. Its a action story with a bit of a thriller. It also tries to do that seinen thing of describing life but the way it goes about it is just off. Like, there are a few philosophical-y moments in this that kinda seemingly go nowhere. Its neat that Charlie has its own unique perspective and set of values. But everyone in the manga goes on and on in these philosophical scenes and then like, laugh it off when Charlie responds? It doesn't help a lot of the conversations and dialogue feels off at times. The best part is honestly Charlie and Lucy.
Idk… its just a bit lacking and all-over-the-place for its direction to me. Hopefully the terrorist plot bit ends because its the least interesting part. Give me more of Lucy, the parents, Charlie's odd responses to humans (the good ones), and the cool plotline with the Mom. Just please don't pursue the terrorist angle it massively ruined the entire second half of this.
The series also has a weird fetish with veganism? That and drawing people with real honkers for noses. I also don't like how they draw African-Americans. They really detail their lips which is just gross.
Final thought: if you do like this manga watch Okja on this Netflix. If Okja-core is ever a thing then this manga is prime Okja-core. This feels heavily inspired by it.

🐵Hoy os traigo otra de las novedades de @distritomangaed , el nuevo sello manga de Penguin Random House, y no es otra que El incidente Darwin!

🐵Lo primero que debéis saber es que este manga ganó el premio Manga Taisho 2022, así que ya partimos de una buena base, y tras leerlo me ha quedado claro las razones por las que ganó tan merecida valoración.

🐵El incidente Darwin es un manga complejo, no busquéis el típico cómic con acción y personajes sencillos, ya que está centrado en otros temas y aspectos más "serios" por así decirlo.

🐵La novela nos cuenta la historia de Charlie, un híbrido entre humano y chimpancé, y como su adaptación al mundo actual le afecta en su día a día tanto para bien como para mal.

🐵Aún así la trama es mucho más compleja y entran en juego muchas facciones que prefiero no desvelar para que lo disfrutéis si decidís leerlo.

🐵En cualquier caso El incidente Darwin es una gran crítica social, cultural y sobre todo medioambiental, donde los temas más actuales se magnifican hasta ese supuesto futuro del cual no estamos tan lejos.

🐵La única pega para mi gusto es que en este primer tomo el protagonista no aparece tanto como me hubiera gustado, pero supongo que un primer tomo tiene que sentar las bases y ser en parte introductorio, es normal.

🐵Os lo recomiendo totalmente si buscáis un manga de carácter más serio, que se centre en temas medioambientales y en hasta donde es capaz de llegar la naturaleza humana.

I first picked up this book and read it because my father bought it at a book store. But when I started to read this book, it was very interesting and I kept wanting to read more. Staring Charlie, the Humanzee (Half Human, Half Chimpanzee) as the main character, this book focuses on Charlie's everyday problems of being avoided at school for being thought to be working with a terrorist group called the ALA whose goal was thought to be protecting animals (killing people eating meat). However, this group wanted something beyond that. Although this book can get a little complicated with relations and situations, this book was very interesting so I suggest it to anyone willing to read this book.

This is a cool lil manga about a human chimpanzee hybrid “humanzee” named Charlie. We get to see his first days of high school, and as anyone could guess it doesn’t go well. An activist group which Charlie has a history with has committed a terrorist attack and everyone is looking at Charlie.

I’m excited to see where things go in the next volume!

Charlie est intriguant, j'ai eu du mal à aimer les autres personnages, soit trop fades, soit surjoués.

Un buen inicio para esta historia. Quedaron muchos misterios sin resolver pero es porque la historia recién está empezando. La premisa es muy buena y los personajes aunque me parecen algo exagerados si contribuyen con la trama.
