Comenzaré diciendo hechos: ustedes jamás amaran a alguien como He Pingyi ama a Jing Can y ustedes jamás serán amados como Jing Can ama a He Pingyi.
This book destroyed me emotionally 😭!! I don't think I'll ever be ready to review this story. I just want to warn future readers: If you are sensitive to topics related to mental health, suicide, death of loved ones and such, stay away from this!!
It has a happy ending, and most of the book is about healing, but it was still a hard blow when some truths began showing up. I cried and felt horrible for both of them, so young and already struggling with the hardest part of life. Also their relationship was everything 🥹✨. If you enjoy the hurt/comfort vibes this is a great choice.
There are some aspects of the story that might have been lost in translation... hopefully some of this author's work will get licensed or someone else picks it up.
I really like how the emotional atmosphere is described and how the characters develop throughout the book. Can't say more without spoiling. >.< But the imagery is quite melancholic and it hits just right~
I absolutely loved An Accident in Broad Daylight, so when I realized that this story was by the same author, I knew I had to give it a shot. While I'm glad I read it, I can only say that I enjoyed it but didn't love it, hence my 3 star rating.
The story follows two high school students: He Pingyi and Jing Can. They meet in their 3rd year of high school and slowly open up to each other and help each other through their struggles. It's a beautiful story and it's written very well, but I'm not a fan of stories with instant love and I feel like that's what happened here, at least for He Pingyi. It takes him a while to realize his feelings, but that's essentially what it is.
There are some sensitive topics covered in the story that shape the characters to who they are today. For example, I knew there had to be a reason why Jing Can randomly decided to attend high school in Huihe away from his family in Beijing, but the reveal was quite unexpected and made me really feel bad for him and the upbringing that he had where he felt like he always had to hide everything from his family. At least his family came around and became more supportive by the end, especially his dad.
I do appreciate how the author eventually brings the story full circle, and some things that are only hinted at earlier are fully explained by the end.
It’s been two months, and I’m still thinking about this novel. A Brilliance, Yet Obtained completely captivated me, every aspect was beautifully done and it absolutely deserves more recognition. Both main characters were distinct, complex, and incredibly well written. Compared to other high school danmei I've read, this one was far more emotionally intense. It went beyond a typical coming-of-age story and offered a raw, thoughtful exploration of mental illness. The writing was powerful and it genuinely made me cry.
