Five Moons Rising #3

Winter's Moons

Rate this book
When Cassidy Nolan agreed to take over as the Alpha for Chicago’s North Side werewolf pack, she knew she was in for a challenge. Four months later, and she’s wondering how things deteriorated so far so quickly. Her sister—the Hunter of Chicago, a genetically-engineered werewolf/vampire/demon slayer—has disappeared, and wolves from her pack are vanishing without a trace. Complicating matters is the lone wolf in town whose motivations Cassidy isn’t sure she trusts.

All Snow had planned was to check in on her brother’s old pack, to make sure they were doing all right and that she didn’t need to avenge him. The new Alpha might be floundering, but with some guidance, Snow thinks she could be a decent leader. Not one to stay too long in one place, she should already be heading out of town, but the Alpha’s plight and that of her pack have her sticking around a little longer.

Cassidy and Snow quickly realize that time is a luxury and they’re about to run out. Forces far greater than the North Side Pack are aligning against them. And when they go looking to forge outside alliances, they discover that those who would call themselves allies may not have their best interests at heart.

In the world of Five Moons Rising.

Cassidy is four months into being the Alpha of the North Side werewolf pack and some of her wolven have vanished. Her super human sister has also disappeared without a trace. Visiting lone wolf Snow brings information of other packs across the country experiencing similar disappearances.

Winter’s Moons is part of the Five Moons Rising series yet MacTague gives the reader enough background information to read this one as a stand-alone. I highly recommend you read Five Moons Rising though for the pure enjoyment factor.

This is definitely an all important ‘build up’ novel. Three quarters of the story is strategically laying out the foundation for the action filled confrontation at the end and the exciting set up for the next novel in the series. I am caught, hook, line and sinker waiting for the next book to come out.

I received a free advance review copy from Bella Books through NetGalley. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

4.25 stars. I’m a big fan of MacTague’s books. MacTague’s imaginary worlds are absolutely wonderful ranging from urban paranormal (like this book), to high fantasy, sci-fi and steampunk and if you like lots of action in your books like me, you’ll not be disappointed. The first book of this series, Five Moons Rising, is one of my all-time favorites. What I like about this series is that there are quite some morally grey or flawed characters and the world they find themselves in consists of not only vampires, werewolves (or wolven as they call themselves) and demons, but also of humans that have been modified by the government into hunters with extraordinary abilities.

OK, back to this book. It is part three in the series but it is actually a sidequel of the second book. Because it is set in the same time frame as the second book, you could read this book without having read the second book. The only thing you need to know is that the MCs from book 1 and 2 (Malice and Ruri) have disappeared (they are actually in a parallel fae dimension) leaving Cassidy behind to fix all her wolven problems on her own. If you like urban paranormal books, but not high fantasy (as I would classify the largest part of book 2) it is an option to skip the second book, although I don’t know if that would give problems further along in the series. You should at least read book 1 though to fully understand everything.

So, about these problems Cassidy has to fix. Cassidy just became alpha and has no idea how to run a pack and knows nothing about their traditions. She’s out of her depth and if that’s not bad enough members of her pack go missing. They have no idea who’s behind it or who they can trust.

A large part of this book is on the slow side, showing how Cassidy has to adapt to her role as alpha (and all the wolven politics it involves) and building the storyline of the missing wolves. Since this is a longer book I think this could have been shortened somewhat to increase the pace, but I found that it still kept my attention, even with the slower pace. Cassidy is an interesting character, showing the world fearlessness, but floundering on the inside and the only person who picks up on this is Snow, a lone wolf. There is a romance between them as a well and this romance surprised me as it is very different from what can be generally expected in a shifter romance. That’s all I can say without giving spoilers. Snow is a wolven that’s very low on the dominance scale, but at the same time she has an incredibly strong personality and knows her strengths and weaknesses.

There are quite some secondary characters, with Carla the vampire lord still being one of my favorites. Cassidy’s mom is an acquired taste and I’m still not sure if I have acquired that taste yet. I wished I would get to see some of Malice and Ruri, but that’s not the case, so I’ll have to wait a bit longer for that.

As mentioned, when I read a book by MacTague I expect action and while I had to wait longer than anticipated the last part of the book fulfilled my wishes fully. I arrived at this part when it was already past my usual bedtime and I just could not put it down until it was done. Needless to say, I had a rough day at work today, but it was worth it. Lots of action scenes and some unexpected surprises, one note though……cliffhanger! I can only hope the next book will arrive fast because I need to know how it will continue. Easily recommended for urban paranormal fans.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Claw, teeth, fangs, murder, mystery, action, family, and friendship?? This book has it all! Okay…well, it doesn’t have sex, and I feel strange giving a sexless sapphic sort-of romance (maybe friendmance would be more accurate?) five stars because I love a good steamy scene. That said, the asexual rep in this was such an interesting and endearing addition that made it all that much better!

The characters. Fantastic. Both MCs are so well written, so deep and complex, and both navigating a difficult internal landscape. Cassidy is struggling to come to terms with her position as a newly-turned wolven and unwitting pack alpha, particularly while things are going so spectacularly wrong and becoming increasingly dangerous. Snow, as an asexual lone wolf, is wary of forming a deeper bond with anyone in fear they might want something from her that she can’t give, yet she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the new alpha. The bond between the two is beautifully written, it develops so slowly, from a reluctant alliance to a deep friendship and more. Absolute f*cking chef kiss for Snow and Cass!

The plot. I love the way the author weaved in a mystery that was both precarious as hell and also ambiguous. Putting this all from the two very diverse perspectives – a newly-turned wolven with little knowledge of wolven norms and customs and an outsider with a broad scope of wolven knowledge, but no deep ties to rely on – really added to the tension and intrigue of the story. The mystery blended in so well around the character and relationship development in a way that complemented both perfectly. This one really had me invested in every aspect of the story the whole way through, and there were no parts that felt needless or wasted.

The worldbuilding. I was so happy that this story was set back in the same dark and mysterious urban fantasy world as the first of the series. The second book was a departure from the world that I didn’t really care for because it was so starkly contrasted against the first. This book, however, was like a sigh of relief to ease back into the original world and finally get more of the werewolves and vampires I’d been craving. I love MacTague’s version of werewolves, she goes into real depth and has some different ideas/mechanics for the werewolves that I haven’t seen before. I’m crossing my fingers and toes that her next book will have the whole gang back together and give us more about the vampires as well!

I would 100% recommend giving this series a listen (maybe not the second book so much, but I’d still listen to it just for cohesion), Lori Prince does a fantastic job as always. For any lovers of urban fantasy, MacTague offers a rich and engaging world with deep and complex characters that you’ll love!

Overall, this was as enjoyable as the first two books in the series, tho it was a bit different than I expected. I loved getting Cassidy’s pov, and getting to see more of what was going on with her while Rauri and Mary were getting up to their shenanigans in book 2 in the fae realm stuff. I enjoyed Snow as well, and found her arc interesting, I was surprised to find out she was ace, (which is great! love more ace rep) but that meant I had to adjust my expectations a bit as I did enjoy the sexy wolven scenes in the first two books. This might be just me, but I didn’t find Cassidy and Snow’s relationship particularly romantic, either, and I don’t say that as a bad thing, but it might also not be the author’s intention and might have just been my interpretation? I actually rlly enjoyed their connection as it grew and it’s possible that this book was just a slow burn to them figuring their connection out as we the readers are, bc they are def Connected and the end of the book made it clear they are v important to each other. Wether that ends up more platonic or romantic I guess we shall see, (my guess is it’s meant to be romantic, but not sexual) but I ended up rlly loving the place they got to near the end of the book.

I DID miss Rauri and Mary so I hope the next book(s, hopefully) bring them back into the fold, tho I loved seeing more of the pack dynamics a little bit, the other alphas, and more of Sophia, Cassidy and Mary’s mom. And I REALLY need a Carla book pleeeeeasseee, there are hardly any good sapphic vampire romances out there and she is screaming for a story of her own. (At least, in my mind). I rlly love this world a lot, and I hope we get quite a few more books. I hope they’re all narrated by Lori Prince, too. She is as fantastic here as always.

ALSO THAT CLIFFHANGER!! Fuck me, I need book 4 now pls and thank.

Gritty and gripping urban fantasy
MacTague has delivered another gripping and gritty urban fantasy. The blurb says it is set „In the World of Five Moons Rising“ but make no mistake this is not a stand-alone to fully understand and appreciate Winter‘s Moon you are well advised to read the first two books „Five Moons Rising“ (1) and „Hunter‘s Decent“ (2).
MacTague delivers in beautiful prose very vivid and clear pictures (the ARC had still quite a few errors I hope that got polished away in the final ebook). The author immerses the readers in the dark inbetween-world of werewolves, distrusting alphas, other non-humans, possible conspiracies, growing despair and a glimmer of hope. I really liked the many unexpected twists and turns. And I think the story of Snow is not nearly told. There is a lot of gripping action in the last third of the book, but - gasp - this book ends with THE mother-f… of a cliff-hanger. In many ways this reads like a (very worthwhile) bridge-book between the first two in the series and an upcoming fourth - and the sequel better comes up very fast for readers hanging by their fingernails on said cliff.
It would be helpful for readers to indicate that this is a series and that another book (or more) will complete it.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.

Cassidy is the new Alpha of the Chicago North Shore Werewolf pack. She is struggling with how to run her pack and keep everything together especially when she learns several pack mates have gone missing. She gets help from lone wolf Snow who gives Cassidy information that other packs across the country are experiencing packs matés disappearing.

This was a good read I like how we right there with Cassidy as she learns to lead and wait to her Mom who’s is very nosy finds out what’s really going on can’t wait for her reactions.

4.25 ⭐️

This is a story about Cassidy Nolan the new Alpha of the Chicago North Shore Werewolf pack. Cassidy was turned into a werewolf in book 1 of the Five Moon Rising series. She was violently assaulted and it has given her added strength and powers that other Alpha pack leaders don’t have. A wandering werewolf-Snow, comes to visit the pack and check up on how they are doing. Her brother, Dean, was killed in the attack that turned Cassidy. Dean was the former Alpha of this pack.

Cassidy is feeling overwhelmed by her new leadership responsibilities. She’s trying to keep her pack together and to solve the mystery of several pack mates who have disappeared. Normally she would have help from her sister Malice (a monster Hunter) and her mate Ruri, but they disappeared while in a mission in book 2 of the series.

Cassidy shows her leadership when she seeks out other werewolf alphas in surrounding cities to help solve the disappearances. She goes to visit Carla, the vampire leader for help and ends up owing Carla a boon.

Snow is a loner and doesn’t belong to any pack. She’s drawn to Cassidy emotionally but doesn’t want a sexual relationship with her.

I liked this book much better than the second book in the series. I enjoyed the relationship between Cassidy and Snow. Carla is always a wild card and fun to watch her torment the Wolfpack. We get to meet Cassidy’s mom and she’s very nosy and bossy. And boy is she in for some surprises!

The last 30% of the book picks up speed and is filled with action and romance and very fun to read.

ARC received through Net Galley for a voluntary and honest review.

The third book in the Five Moons Rising series, this book takes place at the same time (ish) as Hunters Descent, focusing on Cassidy and how she's handling being the Alpha of the North Shore pack. All you need to understand the story is having read the first book, though the second does add some extra understanding to some of the events that are going on.

In a word, this book is great. In another, heavy. It is an awesome story, though, and one that Cassidy definitely deserved, but what she's gone through, and going through? Ouch.

Cassidy is a complex character, and very well written - strong on one hand, having taken on the mantle of alpha not long after having been turned, but vulnerable in another, being new to wolven life, and then adding in the missing pack members...

And then there is Snow, the loner who comes into the scene. Snow is a great character, very well written, and very much relatable. Being ace, she doesn't fit into wolven dynamics well, and yet there is something between her and Cassidy. Not sexual, cause that isn't her thing. But yet, perhaps something else? This is very much a supernatural/urban fantasy book, with the romance being a sub plot, but it is very well woven, and seeing it develop is one of the highlights of the story.

The overall story is engrossing and enjoyable, one that is hard to put down, especially as things start to escalate. A lot is set up, the stakes high, but as this is the first part of two for Cassidy's story, it ends on a cliff hanger.

Even so, this story, and the series as a whole, is one that I would highly recommend. The focus on the wolven and their dynamics was more than welcome, and I highly await both the second part of this story, and then the next book in the series after that. Definitely hoping to see all of the characters get together.

Another great story from this author. I loved all the paranormal characters in this story and the addition of Snow was brilliant. Snow was more powerful than you would think but she was more of a submissive than dominant wolf and would rather avoid a fight than be in one. Cassidy is an alpha wolf trying to find her bearings while being the alpha who took care of her pack. At times you could tell that she just wanted to be left alone and her head voice was too hilarious for words sometimes. The addition of the vampires was even more interesting, because this seemed to be a setup for the next book in this series. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family and I look forward to what's coming next from this author.

4.5 stars

I haven’t found a lot of sapphic urban fantasy that I really enjoyed, but this series is one of them. I like the gritty atmosphere, the different supernatural creatures and their tense interactions, the thrilling action scenes and the well-written prose. Plus, we got to spend a bit more time with Carla, which I found delightful. So why not give this book 5 stars ? Mostly because I didn’t connect quite as much with Cassidy and Snow as I did with Mary Alice and Ruri. I mean, I did end up quite liking them (aside from my frustration with how little Cassidy seemed to value her sister), but not quite as much as the previous protagonists. Hopefully, I’ll like them better in the next book, which I’m definitely going to read.

I practically finished this the same day I bought it. It was very good, I loved it. I think it is the best out of the three books, I really couldn't put it down. It was incredible that Cassandra, after such a short time being wolven and even after all the pain she went through, found the strength to be Alpha. I loved too that the other Alphas saw in her a strength that could bring all the packs together. I loved that they, I think, look to her to become the strongest, most powerful Alpha. I saw where she has a power that connects them (the Alphas) in some way (I'm thinking about that moment in the van). I can't wait for the next book in the series. I have so many, many questions.

Interlude

While Malice and Rury are trapped in fairy land Cassidy has to navigate her role as Alpha of a tricks pack. Fortunately a lone wolf Snow comes in the picture.

This book is a little slower then the previous two. But the ending was jam packed. I can tell this book is more of a set up book. I liked the unique relationship snow and Cassidy are forming. Carly continues to be interesting. The ending was a surprise. I still really want Malice to come back though. I like Malice more then Cassidy as Mc.

This third volume of the Five Moons series is impressive. I loved watching Cassidy mature into the alpha of her pack. So glad she has an ally in her fight to learn about the unknown enemy.

Reading Snow highlights the challenges of being an ace wolven. She takes Cassidy on as an apprentice and more.

The story is fast paced, yet detailed with regard to wolven lore and the relationship between Cassidy and Snow.

The reveal at the end is unexpected. I encourage the author to write quickly.

I found the last few chapters quite exciting but the rest of the book not so much. I suppose it was more involved in setting out what was happening and leading up to the ending. It was left on a bit of a cliff hanger. Who is responsible for the disappearance of the wolven? That has not been properly resolved. Will look to read the sequel, I do want to know what happens!

This story has an interesting take on werewolves that I enjoyed. I wish the mystery was a bit more solved by the end, but the cliffhanger definitely leaves one wanting to know what happens next. A good book indeed.

I read this book first as a beta reader and fell in love with the characters! I feel it’s a bit lighter of an entry into the series, as the first two books are darker/more intense, so I’m glad I started here and then read 1 and 2. Hopefully Lise’s health improves and we will get a book 4.

Wait, why did this book not pick up where the 2nd book left off? I'm really glad that Cassidy is getting her own back story but I would have thought that her sister, would have met up with her in this one. I guess its on the next one... looking forward to them teaming up.

Soooooooo disappointing. The first book was amazing. I don't think I'm going to even finish this series. I want romance! Why would I want an ace romantic interest in a book??? Ahhhh
