Burning Kingdom #1

The Dragon King's Mate

Rate this book
I was supposed to seduce the dragon king, but before I could, he claimed me as his.

Now I’m chained to him, trapped in an ancient mating process I neither want nor understand.

I’ve got to get out, but there’s only one way to do that now—and it involves a much more permanent type of shackle.

I have no idea what will happen if I agree to be the king’s mate, but one thing's for sure…

My life will never be the same again.

DNF

Too many weird logic issues and boring plot action.

In the beginning it’s set up that Seren and her kind can go months without eating. But every couple of hours she needs to feed from her dragon.

It’s mentioned over and over how tired he is but he never gets the chance to rest. Every flight takes hours. Really??

There is talk early on about the two tribes of vampires getting together when pregnancies aren’t possible to enjoy themselves, but she doesn’t know what an orgasm is.

She’s a vampire who has internal thoughts about the need to kill to keep feed, but is having an internal crises over killing a creature made of bone.

Her tribe is primitive and she has mentioned the verbal histories of her people and having no knowledge of things outside her small world, but then she laments over how long it takes to read the labels on hair product bottles. Wtf. How did she learn to read without books.

This was where I knew I couldn’t go any further.

I made it to 43%.

Found this read to be overly descriptive. Slow to start. And the interactions between the MC and FMC slightly boring.

As it progressed, it started to pick up. The characters became interesting, and I became more invested.

Going into book to optimistically

This was one of those books that I call “fantasy chick lit”. You get enough fantasy bits to make it interesting and spice up the blandness of chick lits, but it also has the same level of complexity and depth as any other rom-com.

Up until the last few chapters I was convinced this series is going to be each couple having a book, but I was surprised in a good way that it’s actually not the case.

I really enjoyed the way the relationship developed through the story and how we saw both Seren and Kadoc grow both together and as individuals. It was nice to see them standing on equal grounds when it came to their bond. They were both confused and they learned together and set their own terms and understanding of the mating bond. It is definitely a story for those who like to see the individual’s choice in mating bonds, and the learning and shaping it to fit the specific couple’s needs. I loved that they didn’t just give in after a brief resentment but they actively tried to form a friendship first.

The feeding was weird though. I get it, and it worked with the story, but still there was something about it that made me feel like “can we just not?”. It’s probably just personal preference though.

I was in a limbo to rate this book, because for me it sits somewhere between 3 and 4 stars (closer to 4 actually), but I still don’t feel like it got that umph factor I'm looking for. It’s not bad, it really was fun and I really enjoyed this story and I will definitely keep my eyes open for the next book, but that extra depth was missing for me.

Regardless, I really recommend this book for those who like to see mating bonds as an inconvenience at first rather than a reason for insta-love.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

You kinda get what to expect from this book only by looking at the cover.

In this case, it is pretty self-explanatory.

He is the brooding dragon king that kidnaps his mate. She is a starving vampire, isolated on an island together with her sisters. When the dragon scoops her into his talons, it is a saving grace.

He has his usual round of possessiveness and stubbornness in accepting their bound. She sees his company as something temporary. She wants to return to her vamp sisters, to save them. She is interested in no dragon kingdom.

You get it, it is a through-and-fro. There is nothing spectacular or innovative. You read this book because it will be pretty much the thing we are all expecting from an adult fantasy—it is not even that adult-ish, if I remember correctly.

It is on the same vibe with RUBY Dixon`s books on dragon romance.

I'll call this a "meh" for me. I finished it, and I'm working on the 2nd one so I can complete the series and know how it ends. It's not my favorite however.

The idea of vampire and dragon shifter was interesting, and how the author describes vampires coming about. The cultural differences are significant with a post-apocalyptic vibe. The plot I think would need some work, as things like the amount of time it takes to travel places and there doesn't seem to be much rest at all for the characters in between scenes.

All in all, not a terrible read. Just things I think that could have been done better.

- fated mates
- dragons
- vampires

Seren, a vampire, sets a trap with her sisters in the hopes of seducing a dragon to save them. Their plan works, sort of. The dragon claims her as his own and whisks her away from the only life she's known, and away from her starving sisters.

Now she finds herself mated and chained, literally, to the dragon king no less, and her entire world flipped upside down. Seren must navigate this new world and it's customs, her connection to the insufferably hot Kadoc, battle rogue power hungry dragons AND immortal creatures bent on destroying their world, all while trying to figure out how to escape and/or save her sisters from death.

Seren and Kadoc's story is a bit of a slow build, but I am so into it. Although, the ending of this book has me so upset!

It was good but there were two thing I don’t like: 1. The fact that the main characters fight their feelings for each other. I hate that. I was kind of hoping their story would wrap up with this one and then the others would be about more characters. Also, I can’t stand cliffhangers. Ugh

DNF at 30% because I couldn’t stand reading the phrase “skies-damned” even one time more.

3.5 ⭐️ Dragon x Vampire Fated Mates Romance!

This was slightly better than I expected, but only because I had zero expectations.

I also did not know that it was Book 1 out of 3, so now I need to make my way through this series. And, tbh, the writing and world-building are really not great, but I'm invested in the MCs relationship now.

There's a lot of inconsistencies and details that don't work with one another, but I like the fast pace nature of the narration and, although it bothers me that we only see Kadoc's POV for the very last chapter of the book, I hope it means Book 2 will be Dual POV(?). Fingers crossed.

Also, I really liked that he was OBSESSED with her. Like, most of his dialogue is "she's mine" and "touch her and I'll kill you"... Seriously demented because at the same time he was trying to deny any connection to her lol.

Idk, this was a fun read, but don't expect greatness. It's just a mindless, joyful romantasy.

🌶️🌶️.5/ 5 - It wasn't super spicy. A lot of h0rny thoughts but not many actual scenes. Soooo much biting and bloodsharing tho. So much!

Good read.

It felt like a quick read beacause the writer's style was very simple, almost keeping the FMC, very childlike to a certain point. Not to much exposition or character development, I skipped a whole chapter and didn't miss much. I will read book 2 to see if the characters development changes. Overall, it was a nice story. Little to no spice.

* 4.5 ☆

I have to say... I'm pleasantly surprised with this book!
I have nothing bad to say about it, except for the lack of a sex scene, even though there are a few spicy ones.
Other than that, loved it and would 100% recommend.
I'm starting the next one right away!!

The dragon kings mate

Score: 5/5
Smut: 1/5
Synopsis:

Seren and her sisters are starving on the verge of death, to save themselves they decide to try and attract a dragon so that they can feed from him. Their plan backfires as Seren gets taken away by the dragon as he claims that she belongs to him, and now she is physically forced to stay with him (by an invisible shackle on her arm).

Characters:

I love Seren as a protagonist. She is smart and lets the situation flow, but she is firm when she needs to be. She doesn’t let Kadoc tell her what to do and she fights for her to be seen as his equal. And I also love seeing how much does Siren care for her sisters and how she would do anything to be with them.

I think Kadoc is one of my favorite male protagonists I have read in a long ass time. The author did a good job showing his logical side while also showing his primal dragon side. I also enjoy that he didn’t fall head over heels for Seren from the second he saw her but that it was a slow build up.

Overall Thoughts:

I have read over 30 books of mates since 2021, and I think this is my overall favorite of them. The connection between Kadoc and Seren felt REAL, it wasn’t something that felt rushed or that it happened to quick. It was a slow build up where they actually get to know each other along the way and it’s not just the mate bond doing everything. Which makes it feel like a more genuine love.

Apart from the romance, the overall plot of the book was interesting too and how they are handling the magic aspect. I enjoyed reading about all this very different type of magical beings. In all of the scenes I could really vision in my head how the world was built.

Hooked even when I didn’t want to be!

I loved the book even though there were parts I hated.
Kodac pisses me off. He doesn’t care about her or her sister and judge her based off bs the shifters came up with. But….. You can tell that circumstances made him that way. You start to feel bad for them both.
She wanted to save her sisters but kept going about it the wrong way. Instead of betrayal maybe she should have asked him to bring them another sea monster.
The reason I gave 4 stars is because the writer was great. She kept me interested. I want to read the next book and I was mad it wasn’t out yet. I wanted the MCs to workout. I wanted them to save the world and her sisters. Despite me not liking certain aspects of the book. I was 100% hooked.

I have read all three books in pretty quick succession, mostly because I hate cliffhangers. All and all here’s my review.

World building 5/10
Character Development 6/10
Smut 5/10
(there is way to much “shattering”, what are you? Ancient dish ware)
Story 8/10

It’s an interesting story. If you can handle the words “skies-damn” in place of “god-damn” used a million times more than necessary and the fact that neither of the main characters ever speak to each other and only “snarl” and “growl” every other word. You’ll like it. If you can’t handle that stay far far away. I think there would be less snarling and growling if I had read a book about feral dogs. It’s an excessive amount of snarling and growling.

Interesting premise, but...

I'm upset it took a whole book to get this far, so long and labored so it could be a series? I almost quit reading several times, but thought there might be more eventually, but not enough to justify this type of cliffhanger. There just wasn't enough reason to drag this out.

Did not make much sense

A very long and drawn overly dramatic tale. I don't get it.... It went on and on, to what end?

Who is Kadoc? I certainly don't know and I read the entire book. All I know is that he's in denial and growls a lot.
