What a stonkingly good conclusion to this series

Well I wasn't expecting half the things that happened in this book and it was a riotous way to end the series.

Fantasy will always be my first love and with this blend of elements of urban fantasy with high fantasy, Jocelynn Drake has created a truly compelling saga.

While the events in City of Blood bring to a satisfactory conclusion the main story arc which has run through the previous five books, we're thankfully also left with the possibility of another trilogy somewhere down the line with Adrian, Haru and Prince Shay.

I'm totally down for that as I've fallen madly in love with the whole setting and the various peoples of Thia.

I was also super happy with how the big show down went in the jungles of The Ordas too, although I don't think I'd have been as gracious as Caelan was!

Our four erstwhile adventurers all make it safely through, although not without some pretty dramatic effects along the way.

It's been an excellent read from start to finish and one I'm sure I'll come back to again.

It took me a long time to get into this series. First I had to get used to the fantasy world with modern technology setup, then I saw more telling than showing and hit rock bottom on Wake the Dead. However it was also one of those series where, although I still don't know why, I never wasn't able to stop reading it.

Wings on Fire was some turning point and now with City of Blood all my carping is a thing of the past and completely forgotten because here everything falls into place. Now I see the found-family and how everyone of those 5 characters adds to that close-knit group while they're walking into the Ordas for their final challenge. They grew so much and it shows. There are still internal struggles but they are reasonable and never lead into miscommunication threatening to disrupt their group, even their respective romantic relationships aren't in question anymore, they talk with each other and don't fall anymore for stupid self-sacrificing assumptions. That said it's still no bed of roses for them and it's not only the gods causing trouble.

Now that the gods are free, their history and their intentions are clear and there is no doubt anymore how manipulative and uncaring they are. Even the grain of sympathy the guys might feel for the goddess of the hunt is shattered quite quickly. So Cael's struggles to be a god is unique and that is undoubtedly because of his unbreakable connections with the other guys.

The action is quite good and appropriate for this kind of fantasy. There is some steam but somehow neglectable. It's more about emotional connection than physical and there's plentiful of that kind and I enjoyed it.

If there is something to find fault with it's the epilog and Adrian's connection with Haru. I completely agree with Amur Thera that it's no appropriate conclusion. The intention of that epilog is not to give they guys their romantic happy ending or to allow the reader a glimpse into the live after the war against the gods and the empire, it's mainly a teaser for a spin-off. As much as I like to get that spin-off there is no way to end the original series this way.

The good
+ Caelan's care with his new powers, and how he just wants to protect his people
+ Drayce keeping things light, even when shit gets heavy
+ Eno talking Caelan from the ledge and telling him what kind of god he really is
+ Rayne having plans in place for their future, so they can all get what they want
+ Eno accepting his new normal, and seeing the bright side of things. Namely, being able to marry Rayne
+ Adrian casually mentioning Eno is the best bodyguard possible
+ coming to aid. Nice!
+ Caelan's interpretation of the meaning of Adrian's emotions through the bond
+ Cael not putting up with the gods' shit
+ Epic god battle
+
+ Tula getting what she deserves
+ I will throw all my money at a hardcover boxset with zero regrets

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
o Adrian seemed kind of frustrated by Haru's antics sometimes, while previously he seemed almost equally mischievous. I really thought the former sneaky thief would have more appreciation for Haru's antics, but maybe Adrian will lighten up later when things are less dire
o

The bad
- The epilogue. We have traveled with these guys for six books, so the least we could get was an extensive epilogue with HEAs for every one of them. Hell, Eno wasn't even in the epilogue, and Rayne had only one line. I needed more, because these guys fought hard for their futures, and they deserve happiness. But the epilogue was a setup for a spin-off, instead of a nice peek into the lives of Eno and Rayne reconnecting with Eno's brother, or Caelan and Drayce adapting to the role of king and consort with their identities out in the open
- Kaes did not get what he deserves
- It's unclear to me what exactly happened to Tula and will happen to Tula

I loved these books. The series was absolutely amazing, what an intense journey. The epilogue really left me feeling sour, because these guys deserved more. I'm just going to pretend the epilogue doesn't exist and imagine my own. It involves lots of happy moments for all main characters and many instances of Eno smiling indulgently while Rayne pretends to be mad about Drayce pulling Caelan into crazy schemes. Regardless, I would still definitely recommend the series. A really great experience!

the whole modern but historical world theme this series has is surely not my favorite but the wonderful characters do more than make up for it.

i was expecting a going-to-lose-but-didn't type of fight at the end but i think i kind of prefer what actually took place more. it wasn't amateurish and there wasn't needless death (much) so that's a win in my book.

Caelan and Drayce are my most favorite couple and the lack of smut till the end did play a small part. I can't wait to read about Adrian and Haru😊. i would've preferred they got together in this book and the next series be about whole new characters but I'll take what I can get.

Never Stop

“‘The promises of gods and goddesses are treacherous things.’”So I really want to say oh my gods after finishing this but… as you know they kinda stink. So instead, I’ll say oh my Talos because the beating, and at times bleeding, heart of this journey is Cael. All my emotions are colliding because not only is it the end but it’s THE END. It’s been an emotional, thrilling, action-packed saga and I’ve been ready to see how this would play out since we started but I’m still not ready for it to be over.

My heart lies with this incredibly amazing and enchanting family and I would risk the Ordas to live forever in this phenomenal world.

“Drayce turned in Caelan’s arms and glared at Eno. ‘We do not like caves. We like flying in the sky. We’re not…bats.’
Caelan laughed. ‘You also like comfortable couches and pizza.’
Drayce grinned broadly at him. ‘I’m a dragon of simple tastes.’”

Gah, who wouldn’t fall in head over heels, tail over snout, sword over hilt, pen over text in love with this family. I refuse to name a favorite as I fiercely love them all: Adrian, Cael, Drayce, Eno and Rayne (ahem alpha order only) are the family of my fantasy dreams and wishes. I love how they tease one another, how they protect one another, how they bicker, how they refuse to give up, how the bonds they’ve formed are more than friendship and the strongest form of love. They are my heroes, each one. There is nothing Ordas-nary about this world and I can’t share enough about how it will steal your breath, wake a fire within you, or how you’ll forever embrace the blood rush it sends through you as you read. It is hands-down an epic saga you don’t want to miss, and one you’ll devour again and again.

OMG!!! What a ride! This series was really amazing, I cant believe that this is the last book!!

Cael, Drayce, Rayne, Eno and Adrian now need to face the goddess of the hunt and they didn’t know what is going to happen when they arrive to de Ordas.

The book is fill of tender moments, action and got you on edge and hope that they are going to survive and have the HEA that deserve.

I’m happy how everything ends, Cael was truly an amazing leader and I love how his friends were there always to do anything to help him. I highly recommended this amazing series!

ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS SERIES, all the adventures, the ups and downs, the shocks, the romances and all the snarky banter between Caelan, Dracye, Rayne, Eno and Adrian.

I will be reading this series over and over, I have been this hooked to a book series in a LONG TIME.

I loved it. I wished the epilogue had been longer, there was more that needed solving that is still waiting resolution, but I'm crossing my fingers that Adrian and Haru will get a novel or novella of their own, and with it some closure for those small ends. Though the big plot points were resolved very well

3.75 stars. This was an expansive series with a well developed universe of magic and dragons. The writing felt very YA to me despite the gore and explicit sex scenes. Like maybe the books were slightly underdeveloped and a little too wholesome for the subject matter. I enjoyed the story but probably will not re-read.

After watching Caelan and his trusted friends give their blood, sweat, and tears to the cause, it was viscerally satisfying to experience this final showdown. Each installment has been building and building up to this tipping point, and oh my god was the aftermath thrilling, captivating, and world-changing. What started as a quest to seek out the Godstones turned into so much more than that, and it's been my pleasure to see Caelan, Drayce, Eno, and Rayne grow into themselves and their relationships over the course of this series. There's almost nothing I can share about the contents of this book without revealing massive spoilers, but trust that this final chapter has the same drive and urgency of the previous books, builds to a seriously epic series of battles, and showcases the unwavering loyalty and love between the core group of men we've been following since the start of this journey. This final chapter laid to rest all my last questions about Safa, Zyros, the Empire, and the old Gods while simultaneously weaving a future for Caelan and crew that felt both hopeful and rooted in reality. These men have only grown stronger and wiser with every obstacle in their path, and seeing them use their skills to fight for the survival of all of Thia was equal parts breathtaking and humbling. I am once again in awe of Jocelynn Drake's talent as an author because she made me feel like I was standing right beside Caelan when he was facing down the impossible task asked of him. I experienced every ounce of his and his companions' joy, pain, hope, and fear, and you better believe I was crying tears of happiness and relief when I reached the epilogue and realized that finally, finally their battle was over and they could celebrate with the ones they loved most. Major kudos to Jocelynn Drake for bringing this amazing universe to life, and I can't wait to see what's next!

Oh my gosh! What a rollercoaster ride! I knew this book would be a doozy after the way the last one ended but I was only partially prepared. Please don’t read this book if you haven’t read the previous five. It will not make sense if you do. Caelan and his closest friends now have to go stop Zyros in Ordras and somehow keep the rest of the gods from destroying the world as they know it. These characters have grown so much and come so far since this series has started. It isn’t easy to keep a story going with so many different POVs but Jocelyn Drake has managed it magnificently! This ends on just the right note and is even set up for a possible spin off. The original four companions have their HEA and next we get to hear from three of the new ones they picked up along the way. I can’t wait for that one. It should be good.

This entire series goes on my re-read/re-listen pile for a few reasons:
The detailed plot. There are subplots and an overarching plot with plenty of detail.
The world-building. All the countries, the cultures, everything was so well done!
The romance. By the end there are almost 3 couples to root for. 2 established and so in love with each other. Yes, the steam is on the lower side and it is a sloooow burn for Caelan and Drayce, but I liked that about this series. I wanted the adventure with a side of love.
Found family. That is a heavy theme throughout the series and I'm a big fan of family being the ones you choose for yourself.
I really liked how it ended - leaving room for spin off adventures and a return to them later. I'm off to read the short stories!

Absolutely loved the final installment of this epic fantasy adventure! I am not sure what to write as to not spoiler a finale! I was super happy with all of the relationship twists and happy endings! These guys have all been through so much to get here! I read an arc, and I was actually pleased that there was a bit left open for the future of some of the couples as I believe there is a spinoff series coming! I absolutely Need Haru and Adrian! Haru's possessiveness is everything! If you enjoy epic adventures, complicated and deep relationships of all kinds along with battles among Gods and wonderful warriors, you need to read this series!

OMG. Wow. City of Blood is the sixth and final book in this series. I have been lucky enough to read the journey from the very beginning. Our heroes are now having to travel into the Ordas to take care of Zyros, Goddess of the Hunt. There is lots of action as they travel through this realm. The last quarter of the book tells us how they deal with the Empire and the Goddess. I will definitely be missing reading about these gents but will be looking forward to reading the spin off, especially with Adrian and Haru. Well done and I recommend.

I received a copy of this book for my review.

Loved it

I highly recommend reading the previous books first because no one minute of the epic battle of gods is to be missed. This was a fantastic ending to this fantastic roller-coaster ride and I'm still not ready to get off, luckily it seems this world has more stories to tell. I can't wait to read Adrian and Haru's adventure.

A solid conclusion to the series. Not my favorite part but okay. Just cute how they all bond with each other - sometimes almost too cute for my taste. The finale disappointed me a bit, as some things were simply not explained. The epilogue is also more of a teaser for upcoming parts.

My heart is still pounding away after reading this book. There were moments where I was literally holding my breath for dear life.

Caelan/ Drayce and Eno/Rayne deserved their HEA but they had to fight to the very end and stay strong. Things didn’t always go their way and there were times I thought everything would be lost but there was hope.

Haru made me laugh. I’m dying to know what’s in store for them.

To borrow the author's words from her special note at the end of the book. "I've shouted, cheered, cursed, and spilled so many tears over these books. And I'd happily do it all over again". Same here...sigh...same here. This series wrecked me emotionally in the best of ways. It was a journey full of action, suspense, mind blowing discoveries, sweet and tender moments, and so many twist and turns that had me at the edge of my seat.
We got to see so many sides to these 5 guys...their vulnerability, fierceness, loyalty, strength, protectiveness, and so much love. They were all sliced open, their fears, secrets, and true self revealed. But this only made their bond stronger, creating a family full of love and loyalty. And no matter what situation they were thrown in they stood together and protected each other, even at a cost of their own lives (and they were thrown into a lot of life or death situations). Their banter, teasing had me cracking up, giving me relief from the heartbreaking, emotional moments. And when Haru is added to the chaos it becomes even more fun, lol. I'm so glad we got more of Haru in this book, love that mischievous dragon. But poor Adrian 😂. I wish I can say more but don't want to give any spoilers. Just know that it is very satisfying conclusion..man...so satisfying. And as to how all of the characters were dealt with, thank you Ms. Drake, you made this reader very very happy.
I was hooked from the first book so I'm a little sad this is the final book and the journey has ended since I thoroughly loved the wild journey I was taken with Caelan, Drayce, Eno, Rayne, and Adrian.

What’s there to say except Jocelynn has delivered a fitting ending to a series. We left off with questions about Cael’s godhood/?. They are on the move agin back to the Ordas, where all this began.
I seriously don’t want to give anything away but we have blood, gore, tears and so much love. We see the bonds between each of the 5 men. We see their strengths and are shown when they stumble. We watch them get pickup up to do it all over again the next day. We are give some lol moments where you better not be drinking anything because it may end up spewed all over your tablet or phone.
Cael absolutely comes into his own and finally starts making decisions for himself. We learn the awful truth of the “Gods”. They are a crappy bunch and have made a mess of things. Cael learns how to overcome and adapt. We get a front row seat to the mayhem. That seat shows us the love between the four men and the love between the two couples. Oh, dragons, you didn’t think they weren’t going to show up and help. Haru is as ADD as they come. We find out at the end he’s getting a book all his own and I for one can’t wait. I’ve taken this journey with
Cael, Rayne, Eno, Rayne & Adrian he are some of my most favorite characters when ever created. She told us a story that engaged and drew us in and we became invested in the telling. That is all you can ask of an author❤️

Yes, yes, yes, she did it. 5 perfect books in a row ... the only regrettable thing is, that this is the last book in this series.
But even here seems to be a solution.

So, this book starts nearly immediately after the last one and with the development of the 4th book, there are a lot of open questions.

We experience the peace before the storm, and what a storm it is.
I lived the pacing of this book. I thought it is the perfect mix between suspense, relationship and feelings, and of course a lot of action.

Eno and Rayne were my favourites after the first book. But then Cael and Drayce made their play for my affections ... and it worked so far that they were equal to the other two.
There is so much these characters have to go through but what stands always out, is their sense of family and affection for each other.

Adrian fits perfectly and I absolutely adored him here. Love how that developed.

So, I absolutely loved this book and it belongs on my best-of-2022 shelf but I am also a bit sad as this is the last one in this series 😢 ...
But Jocelynn found a solution for that and I seriously hope it will work out earlier as expected.

All in all, the perfect last book in this series. If you haven't started reading this series, start now!!!!

An ARC was provided by GRR and I am happy to give my honest opinion

I was not expecting half of the things that ended up happening in this book, and I am delighted by that. This series has been, from the start, a beautifully expansive, complex tangle of characters, motivations, powers, and events, and in this book, so many things are unraveled, rewoven, and otherwise put into place in really interesting ways. Definitely start at the beginning of the series if you haven’t already– each book is great, and they’re all worth it to get to the point to see things all work out. The chosen family dynamic at the heart of the main characters’ connection to each other is strong and vibrant, as are each of the characters themselves. I’ve liked some more than others (you can make up your own mind there) but I’ve always cared about each of them, no matter how frustrating one in particular might be, and it’s a relief to see them weather all the epic-ness and find the equilibrium they each need and deserve. Well worth a read.

WOW… The Best Amazing Series Ever!!! I freaking loved every book, sad the series is over now. It’s be an awesome ride and an emotional one too. I cried a lot reading this book, it picked right up to the cliffhanger of last book which shocked me, I’m still in shock. I think I was three percent in and the tears were falling. This book was suspenseful, heartfelt, crazy, a tad funny( Haru),heart stopping moments, angst, ohh the angst, steam and love, so much love. I So love all those men and I’m looking forward to whenever Adrian’s & Haru’s book comes out. It was expected but the plot was big surprise and I can’t wait to meet the new person, hopefully it will be Prince Shey’s love…

Oh my Gods, what an amazing ending to the series. Jocelynn Drake has outdone herself with City of Blood, and I am sad to be done with Caelan, Drayce, Eno, and Rayne. However, I am freaking out about a Trilogy with Aiden, Prince Shey, and Haru—yes please!!! 🔥🙌🏻

I was nervous about how this was all going to end, but I think the story was wrapped up nicely, with some lingering unanswered questions that will make a great next series!! ❤️🗡

Bravo, bravo Jocelynn! Loved every minute of this journey. 👏🏻👏🏻

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Release Date: July 1st (earlier than expected!!) 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Picking wimmediately on from the shocking cliffhanger of Embrace the Light there are old and new complications for Caelan and co. Gods, goddesses, dragon riding, we finally meet Zyros and theres an epic showdown in the Ordas. This final installment is action packed and got my heart pumping a fair few times. Caelan has really been out through the wringer and it’s so good to see him finally come out on the other side with an uplifting epilogue that allowing for what already seems like an amazing spin-off which I will be waiting for with bated breath. Great long series. Highly recommend! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
