First published as a poet on the wall of her elementary school in 1988, #1 Bestselling author Susy Chandler has spent decades dashing poems in private. After major life changes brought her to North Carolina, she cut her cable and wrote her first novel to celebrate finishing her MBA. As part of her oxymoronic lifestyle, she is pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing at the Thomas Wolfe Center for Narrative at Lenoir-Rhyne University of Asheville.
WHOA! A dramatic and emotional rollercoaster in this installment. A fair bit more interpersonal drama this time around - and much political intrigue that is still there as a huge layer, to everything our protgonist Ehra tries to do as she lives her life in this unjust world.
She is trying desperately to navigate being a spouse, daughter and now Mother to baby Ria. While appearing to be 'Omeo' in a world that gives special priveliges to that class, while she struggles with the truth of her own history, as being anything but, and wanting to change this society and it's attitudes.
She has made more connections and discovered more about non-Omeo 'secret societies' if you will. Faux-Meo's passing as Omeo's. She is also struggling with extreme tragedy hitting close to home. Coming to terms with her own parents position in society and just how different her relationships were between her adoptive 'Mother' and Father, and what they did (or didn't) do for her in such a classist society to set her up for success.
Ehra is emotional, and feisty and I love that about her character. She cares so much, and it always made my heart-clench to hear her feelings being dismissed and her ideas passed over as 'crazy' or unhinged, just because she got so passionate. That's not to say she is perfect. Anything but, however she feelS so real as a character. Conflicting yet sympathetic and relatable.
Ehra is coming to terms with her parents own unfair treatments and differing emotional and physical intimacies between her, her adopted daugther, and now her spouse, Mamara.
It gets so very convoluted and shocking. One of the big taboo no-no's of relationships is presented, and it's messed up, and so very gut-wrenching. While it's not something I find "fun" to read about, the emotional impact is full and understandable, and it means I can't wait to see what is next for Ehra in this world.
I found it fascinating, and it kept me reading and focused til the end. What will happen next?
