Pavle (Serbian Cyrillic: Павле) was the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church from 1990 to his death in 2009. His full title was His Holiness the Archbishop of Peć, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci, and Serbian Patriarch Pavle. He took his monastic vows at the age of 34, and was ordained a priest eight years later. He received a doctorate in New Testament and liturgy by the Theological Academy in Athens. He was noted as a renowned theologian and church leader, both in Serbia and abroad. His funeral at the Belgrade Monastery of Rakovica was attended by some 500 thousand people.
