After a really strong 3rd and 4th instalments of the series this 5th book ended up being a bit of a lull. Typically this UF series is a fun action packed ride with a bunch of humour and a crazy main character who is just likeable enough that he is easy to root for. There was some of what made this series good in Fire Water but for some reason both the plot and action seemed to struggle to hold my full attention.
On the surface the plot should have been quite fun. Cisco Suarez has lost the Horn of Subjugation to his Djinn nemesis and needs to get it back before that nemesis uses it! It set things up for some crazy action with Cisco going after Connor Hatch. To add to the intrigue Cisco even got to travel to the elemental realm.
I'm not quite sure why the story never worked for me as well as the previous few did. The elemental realm was pretty interesting but I think a lot of the action scenes just lacked their usual fun or emotional investment. I'm not quite sure why! Perhaps the secondary characters were to blame. Outside of Cisco no one really made a solid impression on me in this book.
The other disclaimer I'll add in is the fact that I'm in he midst of my worst reading slump in a decade and a lot of the stuff I'm reading lately has struggled to hold my attention. This book might just be another victim of that. I'm definitely still going to read the final book in the Black Magic Outlaw series but I'll pause the series for a bit in the hopes I'll be more in the mood for this kind of high action UF.
All in all this one was not as fun as the previous books in the series but it was still a passable read.

Audio Note: Neil Hellegers does a fantastic job with the audio. His character voice are good and he really seems to get the tone and humor of the story. He is the perfect voice for Cisco!

I'm not done! Kindle or Goodreads thinks otherwise. I give up the fight to switch it back to "currently reading". I guess I'm done enough to leave a review. Although, I'm at the tasty bits of the story.
In one of the previous books we got a taste of the Nether. Only a taste, mind you. In Fire Water we get to experience the Aether. My mind was so engrossed in the Aether that I forgot what was happening on Earth. I almost wish we could have spent more time in the Nether.
Domino Finn is one of my favorite authors. His novels are always action packed and has just the right amount of humor.

Note: This is Book 5 in the series and really needs to be read as part of that series, not as a stand alone.
In Book 4, we learned a few big things by the end of the book. First, Cisco has more family than he knew he did. Turns out the Spaniard from the Horn of Subjugation is an ancient relative. Then he also has a 10 year old daughter, Fran. Emily (Cisco’s ex-girlfriend) married Evan (Cisco’s best friend back in the day) and Evan has been raising Fran as his own, giving her some protection from Cisco’s enemies. So that was a lot for Cisco to absorb and digest.
Last book he was in a bit of funk, feeling pretty sorry for himself. But now he has to pull himself out of that well of self-pity and get his life in gear. Of course the attack on Fran’s birthday party is a pretty sharp spur to get him motivated! Once again, there’s plenty of action being tossed around – yay! It’s never a dull moment.
Cisco’s sense of humor has been a big draw for me in this series. He’s got a bit of machismo going and plenty of snark. That’s still there in this story, but some of the humor got a little tiring with all the references to other fantasy series. I felt it detracted a little for this story which I have so enjoyed.
Connor Hatch continues to be the big baddie and he is devilishly deadly. I really enjoyed hating him but I also felt for Cisco. His jinn powers give Connor a definite edge and I really wasn’t sure Cisco would be victorious. He managed a truce of sorts at the end of the last book but not a victory. With Finn, I couldn’t be sure how things would end with Cisco.
So lets talk a little about that ending. First, it was very satisfying in action and people getting what they deserved. However, there are tons of lose ends. I didn’t really feel like this was a series ending. There’s all these side characters that don’t get an ending in this book. Then there’s Cisco and his relationship with Fran, Emily, Evan, and even Milena. Things aren’t tied off there either. I’m really hoping for another book in this series or at least another series in this world that answers some of these questions. If this was just another installment in the series, I would give it 5/5 stars but since it’s supposed to be the series’s finale, I feel a little cheated. 4/5 stars.
The Narration: Neil Hellegers makes a great necromancer full of snark and anger. His little kid voice is also believable and his female voices are believable. All the characters have distinct voices. I felt that Hellegers really enjoyed narrating this story. There were no technical issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.

Cisco Suarez, as usual, takes us right into the middle of things! This is the grand finale (spinning off into something else, I hope – I don’t want to lose sight of Cisco). The current antagonist is Connor Hatch, a drug kingpin and a jinn – super trouble! He found Connor waiting in his room. Unfortunately, his belt pouch with his spellcraft tokens was sitting on the bed, out of reach. Before he could get to it, Connor magically drew up flames that engulfed him.
After a dramatic leap off the balcony into the pool – you have to read Cisco’s account of that! – he walked away to avoid the police. As he turned the corner, another necromancer attacked him! Without his pouch of goodies, he had to improvise. While dealing with that, a Cuban woman carrying a dead chicken came toward him. As he retreated, a gang of teenaged Haitians went after him! Was there no end to this? This was not the vacation he has signed up for! And he still needs to track down Connor!
I can’t get enough of this talented author’s writing – and Cisco is near and dear to my heart! As expected, this book doesn’t disappoint! The presence of the cat occupies the mind with questions so the distracted reader can be constantly surprised by the next thing to spring up! The suspense and humor never stop, but the reader will love every second of it! As promised, we get a great ending. Yes, satisfying for the moment – but I hope Cisco sneaks back in!!!

I sincerely hope that this is not the last we hear of Cisco Suarez, as I feel there are still stories to be told.
This is a cracking story which ties up some loose ends that have been hanging around. Domino Finn enjoys writing about Cisco, you can tell. This whole series has been action packed, but boy this book has its fair share and then some. What a fantastic ride.
I really don't want to say much and spoil it for others, but not everything or everyone are as they seem. Entertaining, nail biting, good humoured, eye opening, and so many different agendas on the go - we even get to join Cisco in another plane of existence.
The best quote in the book (which made me giggle out loud at silly time in the morning) completely sums up everything I enjoyed about this series:
"Then I suddenly remembered I was Cisco f***ing Suarez."
Stick it to the man - come on! *fist bump*

I am coming a little late to Cisco Suarez party as it seems I am jumping in at book five but it is ok as I figured things out pretty fast. Especially when someone, Connor Hatch, try's to kill you at your daughter birthday party, yeah that kind of warrants a retaliation. Humm, and the black is there too.
Domino Finn has a great series and book on his hands, it is full of action, suspense, and so many twists and turns you will never know what is coming next, and with narrator Neil Hellegers lending his voice to all the characters to make the book into a story told to people in that wonderful way of making people feel as though they are a part of the story themselves just makes it a even better experience.
Oh and Cisco I really hope it is not the end of the line, please I'm late but I do want more.

Great ending!
Ah, a satisfying ending to a super-fun series. I've always wanted to see a necromancer who used his powers for good. It winds up totally intriguing.
In this book we get to visit both the Aether and the Underworld. And there's dragons. And I want a picture of that Aether city. It's a great, fun conclusion to Cisco's story arc. Yet lots is left open. I hope another series comes along with more craziness for Cisco to take on.

This book seemed to mark the end of the current Cisco Suarez struggle, and many other characters that have been established throughout the series went a bit topsy-turvy into their own curtain calls. Despite this, I saw a few glaring flaws in book 5 I didn't see, or perhaps, just don't remember, from previous installments.
1) Cisco's Daughter/Wife/Best friend aren't really part of this book, at all, it seems the end of book 4 just conveniently wrote them off; and there is actual sense of this being "done", in the same breath, at the end of book 5, it doesn't seem there is much reason for another installment.
2) The art of fantasy writing has often been lazy in some respects, by this, I mean: Using more well-known and well-established series as comparative "Go to's", and then milking them for all they are worth with a tongue-in-cheek humor that seems more or less: overdone, and grating. I've enjoyed this series because it has avoided it, until now, with Game of Thrones and other references thrown out for "loose, comedic effect", that actually took away from that section of storytelling.
When people/authors reference other fantasy series, it's always in the same way, across the board, no matter the author; and it tends to be a tired tact after a while. "Oh, there really is a mother of dragons!?" "Oh, Vampires really do Sparkle?", "Oh, Dwarves really do have magic axes?"
3) Despite how the book ends, and his own heritage, none of Cisco's other family is knotted into the ending of the book. Which is peculiar to me. If it's due to his bloodline, and all the explanations that were given, where is the rest of his family? This seemed to be a glaring omission.
In the end, these are just a few things that there are no answers given to; other, less important ones also remain.
In the end, it wasn't a bad book, and the end more than picked up for the trek into the various other "lands", however, if the series does continue and in the same vein as this book; I hope the worldbuilding is given a touch more effort, and there is less reliance on "2".

Awesome
I loved this book. The storyline and ending were fabulous. And I was pleasantly surprised with the locales the story took place in, so different from the prior 4 books in this wonderful series. I don't want to say anymore. I do not want to ruin it for anyone else. Great book.

Nice
I like this series, it's punchy and fun. The MC's attitude is usually entertaining and the side characters don't feel like cardboard cutouts. This particular entry felt like a good stopping point or pausing point for the story. Things that need to be resolved are left largely resolved. Neatly tied up.

This series has been interesting enough to keep me reading through book five and better than even odds that I'll read book six eventually. I felt this entry into the series had some very good chapters and some that were not so good though it did wrap up the story arc from the previous books so I'm curious to where the series will go next.

Fire With provided a satisfactory ending to Cisco's struggle against the Jinn that had tormented him and his family. Even if Domino Finn never continued this series, at least things were wrapped up well.

Ultimate showdown!
Cisco finally travels above and beyond to accomplish his endgame. Self-discovery and epic battle scenes are the highlights. I just wish a wrap-up with Milena, Darcy, Fran, and his friend and ex-wife was included.

Action packed!
The action picks up in this one. Still plenty of threads left to follow and threats to be taken care of.
Let's just hope the MC learned something so that it doesn't take five books to stop the next one.

Firewater marks the end of the battle between Cisco and the Jinn Connor Hatch. The storyline is absolutely awesome. The ending is great with the powers Cisco acquires. Hope to see more of the Black Magic Outlaw in the future.

Series still worth reading.
Let's face it if you've made it to book 5 you know what you're getting. This book wraps up many of the story lines I enjoyed it a lot I will continue to read the series as long as he continues to write them

Cisco Suarez is an amazingly driven character that is rare in books nowadays. I'm happy to read a book about an antihero is actually lives up to the name.

I'm so excited to know that hopefully this isn't the end of the Cisco Suarez! I was disappointed that there weren't as many supporting characters present as there have been in the past, but it was a really good finale to the biggest thorn in his side.

I loved this book and the series. I impatiently waited for each book in the series so I could scarf it up and read it. Sorry to see Cisco go, but I'm sure Domino Finn will come up with another series to keep us entertained. Can't wait!

Dark urban fantasy at its best!
NO SPOILERS HERE. There is a lot going on in this 5th book of the series but the publisher’s summary does a nice job of providing the highlights so I won’t even attempt to offer a synopsis. This is one of the most imaginative and compelling series to come along in a long while. It has so many interesting features to draw the reader in. You know you are in for a great story when the “hero” is a snarky necromancer who, though now alive, used to be a zombie hitman. In this book, our main character, Cisco Suarez, the aforementioned snarky necromancer, encounters zombies, wraiths, Haitian necromancers, elementals, dragons, jinn and more in his action-packed, never-a-dull-moment mission to take down his archnemesis, Connor Hatch. His battle takes him to other realms including the Aether and the Underworld. The reader is treated to some fascinating Taíno mythology. Friendships are tested, allies are imperiled, and danger lurks around every corner.
I have loved each story in this series and this one was no exception. This author always delivers more than expected, more than hoped for, and way more than my imagination could have ever conjured. I also thoroughly enjoy the outstanding narration provided by Neil Hellegers in the audiobooks of this series. Each character is given a unique voice well-suited to the individual and the overall pace and tone are always perfectly coordinated with the events of the narrative.
If you enjoy dark urban fantasy, this is definitely a series worth your time. As always, I am eagerly anticipating Cisco’s next adventure.

This author knows how to spin a story. Good continuing storyline. Exceptional writing - a gotta have book. Magic abound, demons, necromancers and many others. The life of Cisco Suarez is never dull or easy. I received a complimentary copy of this book for voluntary review consideration.

I have read every one of the Black Magic Outlaw books in one sitting,
and this one was no exception. It grabs you at the first page and just
dares you to keep going on. You must find out what will happen next.

Another great book
Yet another fast paced ride in the Cisco Suarez world, with Cisco finally hoping to take down the architect of his many losses, the jinn, Connor Hatch. Between jumping out of 8th story windows, a sojourn in the Aether, flying with dragons and a submarine trip Cisco chases down Hatch at every turn.
I'm not going to give away too many more plot points or spoilers, suffice to say that this is a fitting end to this particular story arc.
Definitely recommended.

Magical, highly recommended
Action packed from start to finish.
Cisco has been through soooooo much and recounts it all soooooo well.
An unexpected but satisfactory conclusion to a fabulous series.
