A ranger’s duty. The rotten heart of a king. Rebellion spilled from the blood of family.
The Ranger’s Lament is the epic conclusion to AC Cobble’s King’s Ranger series. Rew, and his band of companions, have fought from one end of Vaeldon to the other, but the final leg of their journey will be the most difficult.
Rew has spent his life running from who he is. But now, to save the kingdom, he must confront his past, and return to the place that created him. He has to go home. His father awaits, hungry for Rew’s life and his soul. Can Rew confront his most dangerous foe, and cut out the rotten heart of the king?
Raif, no longer the petulant boy, must command the respect of men to advance a brutal march northward. Zaine, a thief without a care, will risk a family she never believed she’d have. Anne, the caring nurturer, must turn her back on those in need to heal those she loves. Cinda, heir to power that rivals the king himself, will decide—a march to power, or a march to salvation?

An absolutely brilliant conclusion to the series. I’m sad to see it end but these characters really came through and the story came together so well. Some things we knew would happen while also expecting it to not happen. As sad as it was, it’s also refreshing to see one of our heroes not make it. It makes it more realistic. I didn’t enjoy it though. This is one series I’m glad I checked out and stick with cause it was great and I loved the characters!

First, this is actually a review for all six of the books that make up A.C. Cobble’s “The King’s Ranger” series even though I am writing this on the 6th book. There are no major giveaways here but I do reference the direction of the storyline a bit. If you don’t want any idea what is going to happen, stop reading. Most of it, like any good series, has enough foreshadowing that nothing I say here will ruin anything for you.
There are a few things that I dislike about fantasy books. 1) Often towards the end of a series an author will feel the need to start enabling the hero(s) to “portal” long distances in short periods of time so that they can talk readily to the huge cast of characters that are otherwise leagues away. 2) They feel the need to “save the day” by finding a last minute solution for an otherwise impossible obstacle. 3) No matter how strong and capable they make a female hero, they always end up being surly and petulant on some level or need to be “saved” by a hero.
Thankfully Cobble keeps all of that to a minimum. He makes it almost impossible for the adventurers to portal anywhere as the story line progresses. The heroines of the tale do not devolve or change their principal personalities throughout the books and I like that he gave one the main characters a choice that ended exactly how he foreshadowed it rather than giving her an out in the finale.
While I can say that there are aspects of the story I wasn’t overly fond of, I think Cobble does an excellent job of telling the story and balancing crazy situations (how many time can you win an impossible scenario with no loss to your main characters?) with character development and scene setting. Further, there were no characters or subplots that I elected to skip over; everything was woven together well and I never felt the need to skip sections of the books for lack of interest. While I was a bit slow reading the first couple of books, that was owing more to my own time availability and not any lack of interest. Having said that, I had no problems putting these books aside when I needed to be doing other things and picking them back up sometimes weeks later.
Overall a solid vacation read, engaging but not overly cerebral.
This book tries to wrap everything in a tidy knot. We expect it to be about the final battle with the king, but that’s only the final 20 percent of the book. You can expect battles with ever-evolving Dark Kind. Finally learn their true source and what it takes to defeat a 200-year-old evil. I like Rew. His cohort has risen to become a powerful support system for him which is what truly matters in the end. Not sure there are any happily-ever-after endings for the characters we’ve traveled with for six books, but there is closure.
True family is more often than not the ones we count on to be by our side. Bonded by blood or by shared trials which has the greatest hold over us? I truly enjoyed the the way this book explored that question.Always an action and adventure fan but contemplating what drives us makes for very interesting story!
Disappointed in the last book of the series. It did not seem like it belonged in the same series. The flow was entirely different and there was not as much character interaction. The first five were very good and I did not want them to end, but this one seems like one long acid trip that I had to plod my way through and wanted to just end.
The Rangers are the heroes of legend, overcoming incredible odds to save their land as it's people. This last book in the series doesn't disappoint, the warriors fight their way across the kingdom against unbelievable evil. I highly recommend these books
Great story of magic, heroism, loyalty, friendship, and victory of good over evil.
Five disparate souls thrown together have to fight their way through overwhelming odds including hordes of undead warriors, corrupt nobility, and their own incompatibilities, to succeed in overthrowing evil gathered up by generations of horrific kings.
This was the final book in a 6 book series. I loved the first 5 and a half books .... but the final showdown between Rew and his father was too long and dragged out for me. Of course you knew Cinda was going to sacrifice herself to kill the evil King ... and everything was wrapped up at the end. I was disappointed at the ending.

I really have enjoyed reading this author. His books are exciting and his characters are very interesting. I'm trying now to read all of them. I've been through three series and enjoyed everyone. If you enjoy good clean fantasy this is an author that writes that. When you see the author's name AC Cobble on a book you will know it's a good one..
An incredible ending to an incredible series! Definitely a good adventure! Read through series and get to know the wonderful characters. Watch them go through terrifying experiences and growth in a world turning upside down. A creative and fitting end to the Rangers trials and triumphs!
Did not want this series to end. It was wrapped up masterfully. I look forward to reading more of A.Cs work. His attention to detail is so good you feel like you are there.
The rangers lament pulls together all of the books before nicely. Like most of AC's books, what you think the end will be it won't. It'll be much better. The ending also is very satisfying. Strongly recommend.
Thoroughly enjoyed this series and the journey of the group. Newly discovered the author and will be reading the other series as well. Loved the personalities of all of the group and how they evolved through the course of the books.
AC out did himself with this series. As a writer he improves more and more, and he was pretty good when he started. If you’re looking for a fun adventure series with plenty of action, this is it.
Very good story.. Loved the characters and the interactions.. My only suggestion would be to have a brief recap at the start of each book. Reading stories over a 3-4 year span makes it a little hard to remember.
Final book was a bit of a let down. I still enjoyed it but was looking forward to this big showdown with the king, but it felt rushed. I would recommend the series as it definitely had its moments
I highly recommend this series to anyone who needs adventure, excitement and the comfort of having trusting companions. Swords, monsters both animal and human, play a major part in these books.
Thank you AC for an excellent series with continued character development along with the story line that you unfolded. It’s refreshing to follow the main characters interactions and motivations while following your overall plot throughout the series.
A decent last book. It was a bit tidy and sudden at the end (also got a bit strange). Overall I would rate the series a 4. I like AC and loved his first series, but the characters in this series just seemed a bit wooden and perfunctory.
I won't spoil anything with details...but the way the author wrapped up the final confrontation seemed silly. It just got a little weird. All my reviews for the other books were five stars.
This series was exciting, colorful, and totally full of surprises at each turn. Don’t try to guess the plot, something I always attempt, because you next response will always be, “ I didn’t see that coming’.
