All my life, I’ve been fascinated by stories about gods and the mortals they treated like toys.
Now I’m at Oxford University with a newly acquired doctorate, and I’m making a career out of my childhood obsession. There, among medieval buildings and famous libraries, I meet five men who have names right out of Greek mythology.
Achilles. Hector. Paris. Pollux. Orestes.
I’m drawn to them, not only because of their names, but by the passion they try to hide.
And the way our fates seem inexplicably linked.
Turns out, I’ve uncovered an ancient artifact that could do more than just turn the academic world on its head. It’s the key to releasing a pantheon of angry gods who’ve had millennia to plot their revenge. And it’s the reason these legends have emerged from the shadows.
Five men who were once princes, generals, and tragic heroes have vowed to stop at nothing to prevent the world from descending into chaos again. Even if it means ignoring the growing passion between us and wiping me off the face of the earth.
**The New Gods is the first book in a reverse harem romance series with dark themes**
Ripley Proserpina spends her days huddled near a fire in the frozen northern wilds of Vermont. She lives with her family, two magnificent cats, and one dog who aspires to cat-hood.
My impatience got the best of me !! I really struggle with slow burns, but the pacing of this book felt glacial 🧊
I was pretty excited when I read the blurb, as the plot sounded so unique. I thought it was going to be like an adult Percy Jackson. It was not that.
You could tell that the book had been thoroughly researched and for this I have to give massive props to the author. I like to think I'm into history, but it felt like a lot of info dumping and I need 3-5 business days to retain it all.
There is obviously a wealth of Greek mythology, so I understood the additional information, but it honestly bored me and somehow made the book feel so much longerrrrrrrrrrrrr
Things I didn't gel with :
The FMC - Leo/ Leonora 🤷🏻♀️ - She’s socially awkward and despite that being relatable & endearing, she lacked substance. There isn't much else I can say about her. She's ‘smart’, but the character wasn't really dived into. A little forgettable.
The MMC’s🤷🏻♂️ - It's been a day since I read it and I can't tell you one of their names. My memory is terrible, but they were bland men and in a line up I wouldn't be able to tell them apart.
The Seal 🦭 - I was confused what this was or looked like. Is it like a plate or a metal disk. At the start of the book, I imagined a frisbee thing and then a couple of chapters in, I imagined something that looked like a sink plug. No idea.
I would like to reiterate that I struggle with slow burns, but I can power through them when I feel like I have something to look forward to. With this book, I already didn't like the FMC or the 2 MMCs that were discussed, so 30% was enough for me.
What captured my interest: RH (yo, this genre is GROWING on me, ngl) What made me stay: the plot + the leads
This is probably the best RH book I've read this year. I was hooked from the very start.
***There are some spoilers ahead.***
✔✔✔ → LEO
She has some of the qualities I like in a FMC:
— smart and logical — brave (not the superficial kind) — passionate about her life's work and in what she generally does — independent — confident and knows her worth
“It hurt, but it doesn’t matter. I found other things that matter more. Other aspects of myself that I really like. And I’m not going to hate on my body because it doesn’t look the way it should, or my face because my features aren’t perfect. I’m healthy. I’m smart."
I like her flaws, too and I can relate to them:
— anxious, awkward, and socially distant
"My fingers touched the index card I shoved in there from the last party. I’d made some notes—topics I could bring up if I got stuck."
— though she may be confident and aware of her worth, that doesn't stop her from disparaging/belittling herself sometimes
"Once you get to know me, and see just what I am, you’ll move on. You want to have a conversation about the ingredients in the paint used at Delphi, I can do that. If you’re super into being lectured, I can do that, too. But I’m not comparable to Helen, in any way. And you won’t think about me again for the rest of your—well—infinity.”
I'm not sure how others view this scene but for me, it's not her wallowing in self-pity. It's just her stating a fact. Again, I relate to this a whooole lot.
I can be confident and aware of my worth but there are instances where I know I'm not the best, the smartest, nor the prettiest in the room, and that's fine. I can admit that to myself. What I am is enough. But then again, there will always be times when I will take a dig at myself hihi.
Lol this is turning into a reflection paper. I feel like a student again. Moving on.
→ THE MMCs INTRODUCTIONS AND THEIR FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH LEO
All I have to say about this is that each intro was unique and memorable. I wholly enjoyed how they met Leo and us readers. Except for one of them.
→ LEO'S PAST
The twist about wasn't all that shocking. The author gave the readers several (and obvious) hints throughout the book.
But that's what enjoyed about it—how she gave snippets of that scene little by little, coaxing the readers to come to the right conclusion. It wasn't too complicated and you don't need to be as astute as Detective Conan.
I luuurv twists like this. It reminds me of the twist in Extraordinary Attorney Woo about the identity of her birth mother.
✖✖✖ → 1 + 2 + 4's RELATIONSHIP WITH LEO
Again, I don't want to influence others' opinions of the MMCs too much, so here, I referred to each as numbers based on their order of appearance... backwards.
Their interactions were too short! I didn't feel their connection with Leo that much, unlike with 5 and 3.
I usually hate books with 700+ pages since they tend to get boring at some point but I feel like this book should've been longer. I do hope RP gives them more screen time and significant development with Leo in the next book.
Ahhh so I DNF’d this book, but it’s more of a me problem than a problem with the book I think. The writing is good, I just got incredibly frustrated with the characters and plot. I was planning to finish it, but at this point I need to face the music that I’m not going to make it through. I was really enjoying this story until it got to the part where she was brought into the fold about what’s going on and believed everything but then decided to continue on her path to uncover the seal despite understanding it could bring about the apocalypse. I was getting the ‘walking into the basement of the haunted house’ vibes where I just wanted to scream at/shake the FMC. For a smart lady that is respected her hubris and ego just felt like such a negative trait when they were applied to her selfish drive for recognition being put above the safety of the world. I’m sure everything works out for everyone but I just couldn’t deal with the journey.
Dr. Leonora Ophidia found fame early on with an extraordinary discovery and now she has her dream job as an Oxford professor. She gets to share her passion with her class and further her research moving her closer to another great historical find. Little does she know history is about to come for her. Achilles. Hector. Paris. Pollux. Orestes. Men who were bigger than life. Demigods straight out of the pages of Greek mythology. Real men. Living today. In England. Men who are willing to do anything to keep Leo from making another discovery. As it turns out, her discovery has more significance than enthralling the academic world. It's an ancient artifact capable of destroying the entire world.
I am convinced Ripley Proserpina is a bibliophile of great proportions. Her knowledge of the classics has played a large role in several of her books. Now her passion for Greek mythology has helped her create a superb new series. I hope she understands how much I appreciate and respect her knowledge and varied interests because they mirror my own. This is the RH I didn't realize I was waiting for. Tragic heroes, which we are all familiar with presented in a new light. Personal relationships with legends. Then matching with a brilliant modern woman who has as much baggage as they have is brilliant. Each character is more complex than the last. Tangled emotions, regrets, and self-doubts all come into play even as their attractions build. The complexities made me pause and reflect throughout the book. I'm not going further into Dr. Leo's story. I will elaborate more after the next book to avoid spoilers. I will tell you if you are looking for an intelligent, highly creative, well-thought-out book with epic characters, mystery, suspense, and passion, this is a must-read.
I can always count on this author to weave a good, smart story and this new series starter is no exception. Another thing I can always count on with this author is a strong heroine, and Leo is definitely strong, and so smart. I love her knowledge of Greek mythology and it definitely comes in handy as one by one she meets players from those myths in her modern day Oxford world. They are afraid of her finding more pieces of an artifact and feel they have to take drastic measures to prevent it from happening, but as they meet Leo realize they cannot. It's a little more insta-into her than I generally like, but the circumstances they face make that part okay for me. I really like the relationships between all of the guys, and they each have their own deep, deep-seated issues that Leo is going to help them overcome (and they, her - I SO feel for her with what her parents did to her!). Though there are mythological/paranormal elements at the core of the plot, the vibe/tone/dynamic of the story and the characters seems most similar to this author's contemporary Finding Nora series, which was the first by her ever read. Certain things are revealed by the end of book one, and it leaves you looking forward to what is coming up next.
Well I’ll be damned. I’m not gonna lie most of this book was a little weird to me and that’s hard to say because I loooooove stories with Greek/roman gods. This time it just took a bit for the story to flesh itself out and by the end I was hooked. Finding out the heroine is Medusa reincarnated was not at all what I was expecting but damn if I can put it down now. Her background combined with her (4 I think) mens really changed the game now we know the connection. I’m also a bit pissed her mean jealous ex teaching advisor is actually Athena parading as a human. I’m still so mad at how she tried to destroy the heroines career. She’s so passionate and dedicated that watching anyone try to discredit her was hard. Each of the characters have so much pain and history still lingering even hundreds of years later that makes the gods meddling so much worse. Heck the guys have basically spent much of their time moping and living off regret that I’m actually glad she couldn’t remember her past until her memories were unlocked. Just like the gods to meddle in human lives, though I’m surprised they even still care after so long. But then again they’ve been locked away and probably spent much time plotting. I have no idea how the gang expects to take on the Gods but I’m ready to find out. Not gonna lie this author is a win lose for me and luckily in the end I can say this was a win. Medusa is my kryptonite 🧨

Ok, this was pretty dang cool! I really enjoyed the history lessons and all the mythology. I believe this is a why choose, but I’m not exactly sure since I went in blind. It seems to be setting itself up that way though. Honestly, I think the story could have been better without any romance. That’s the only reason it’s not a 5 star read for me.
May want to ignore this review because I just couldn’t get into this one. Felt too slow. Wasn’t a huge fan of the FMC. Didn’t really get the relationships. Overall there wasn’t enough there for me to want to keep reading. But it could just be me. In theory, I liked the idea of the story.
This book was really, really interesting!! I really liked the main character. She was so smart, but struggled with the social stuff, which I found relatable (the social struggles). The guys were really interesting too!! Can't wait for more!
The New Gods is the first book in Ripley Prosperina's new series, Rebels and Curses. If you are a fan of Greek Mythology then you are going to eat this book up. If you aren't a fan of Greek Mythology you are still going to devour this baby. There is no way that you can't! So we have Dr. Leonora Ophidia. She has always been very career driven and at a young age she made a discovery that rocked the world. This lead to her getting to do something she had always aspired, be a tenured professor at Oxford University. She gets to share her adventures with students, professors and investors. This small artifact that she found has also gained the attention of a group of men. A group of men who have names far too unique to be coincidental.
Hector, Paris, Achilles, Pollux and Orestes are no ordinary men. They have spent an eternity trying to keep what happened with Leo from happening. A very particular artifact that was broken and hidden long ago needs to stay hidden. For everyone's sake. So why does this group of determined men find it so hard to do what needs to be done?
The thing I love most about Ripley's books are that you get such an in depth story. Now don't get me wrong, you guys know I love some hot and heavy books. Bottom line every time though, I want the story. The journey. I always know I am going to get it all with Ripley. So yes, this is definitely on the slow burn train. That doesn't detract from this book at all though. There is so much going on. So much to love. Getting to know these characters and learn their stories. I just loved it all. And oh my goodness that ending. I love that little twist. Can't wait for the next book in this amazing series.
Mythology, from the almighty rulers of Ancient Greece to the land of Pharaohs and hidden treasures, one can only hold their breath in anticipation as the sheer thrill of discovering such fascinating worlds completely absorbs you. So, when I saw that Ripley Proserpina has something that focuses on Greek Mythology, I knew that it would be an intriguing book, and by all means, she did deliver.
I loved the plot, it is evident that the author managed to incorporate elements of the Greek Mythology within the paranormal elements of the book.
The FMC is a scholar and her recent artefact discovery lands her a position at Oxford University. Leo is such an amazing character, she has had her fair share of deception and betrayal as the world of academia is quite cut- throat, in particular in her line of work. I loved how excited and sublimely happy she was as she was going through ancient manuscripts. I was completely smitten with the main protagonist and her unyielding determination to seek more answers.
Hector, Achilles, Pollux, Paris and Orestes had an interesting dynamic and I am quite curious to see how it will all play out in regards to the main heroine.
The book was engaging and for certain I did not expect some of the revelations towards the end in this first installment. This was very well thought through book, in terms if plot, suspense and character building. I simply cannot resist anything revolving Mythology and Ripley Proserpina gave me exactly what I needed.
So, for those that like their storylines with a splash of sparkle from the Gods, this a splendid book to dive in.
So it's a wrap on The New Gods by Ripley Proserpina!
Rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
This is the first time I have read a fiction about Trojan wars and Greek gods. This was definitely something new and unique for me. There was very little spice in this story but the way the past has been incorporated in the present has made this book one of my top favourites.
Leo and all the Trojan heroes had a lot of baggage which was written in great detail so read the trigger warnings before reading this book.
I was fascinated to reach the end of this book and was pleasantly surprised by the ending.
The book tropes were: ✅Boss Bitch FMC ✅Damaged but strong Trojan Heros ✅Multiple POV ✅Inspired by Greek Mythology ✅Traumatic Pasts ✅Asshole Parents ✅ Immortality and Superpowers ✅Ends on a Cliffhanger ✅Reverse Harem - sort off
In terms of Romance, this book did have some bits and pieces of it, but it mainly focused on the FMC and her journey on discovering pieces of a pottery with images that are dated 200k years before the first traces of men.
She was portrayed as a strong and independent, fierce and practical but also a willful and understanding person. I liked her a lot.
Anyone who liked books like Percy Jackson will definitely like this book.
I'm going to be brutally honest here and admit that reverse harem romance is really not my thing. I typically feel they are all about heat and usually offer very little substance. Now do not get me wrong, I love and embrace the heat and the hotter the better is the motto I subscribe to; however, I also have a fierce need for genuine emotions, some serious Feels, more than cardboard characters and if I want to be truly greedy (GASP!) an actual storyline. Lol Yeah, I know, it is a lot to ask and believe me my expectation are very often not met. I am absolutely thrilled though to say that book checked all those boxes and left me with a wicked craving for book two! Leo, Paris, Pollux, Hector, Achilles and Orestes are complex and wickedly intriguing characters that share an undeniable connection and a simmering chemistry that practically sears through the pages. The brilliantly constructed, enticing and totally consuming storyline delivers an intoxicating blend of romance mixed with myths that is by turns seductive and stunning. Intense emotions, taut tension, can't-look-away drama and a rich underlying layer of epic secrets, danger and jaw-on-the-floor twists made for one truly terrific read and an incredible start to a new series. This is my freely posted frank review.
The story and romance was suuuper slow. Lots of info dumping about greek gods and the history. I skimmed most of this tbh because I didn't really care. FMC wasn't really my favorite and I didn't really feel her connection to the guys until the last couple chapters. It starts to pickup a little bit around 80%. Not sure if I care to pickup the next book.
Mixed, mixed feels. I liked the writing and the characters. The characters are unique and that always does it for me. The MFC was quirky in a way I enjoy. The MMCs were different enough that they didn’t get messed up in my head and they were all well developed.
But there were a few things that really bugged me. One was the modern vernacular. Ugh. I really hate when authors use trending slang. It’s so cringe and it will be even worse as time moves past the trend.
Second, sadly the relationships moved too fast for me. I didn’t feel the chemistry that I love in romance. There was a lot about the MFC’s work and research and I feel like that could have been dialed down to spend more time developing relationships.
I do plan on reading the next one tho. I’m sure the relationships will develop more in the second book.
The first chapter in this book takes place thousands of years ago and is the basis of this story. Five demigods, brothers if you will, Hector, Paris, Orestes, Achilles, and Pollux merge their powers into an obsidian seal that will lock away the Gods and Goddesses. It would appear as a jug or amphora figures adorning it, should anyone find it. It would be in pieces, scattered across the globe, hopefully gone forever.
Dr. Leonora 'Leo' Ophidia, on a dig in Turkey, unearthed a shard of vessel. It depicts the image of Horace and in Cyrillic beneath the image the words 'For Astyanax, beloved son of Hector, Prince of Troy'. This piece now on display in the British Museum has been carbon dated way prior to established date of the Trojan Wars. Her discovery was the entry to her current position of professor at Oxford.
We first meet Pollux at her first lecture, he was stunned to realize the shard was indeed part of the seal he and his brothers created. He asked only one question and that was if she'd found any other pieces of the vessel. Her confident answer makes him realize she wasn't going to stop looking for the rest of the pieces. This is far more frightening than she could possibly imagine.
She meets Orestes next as he saves her from being run over. The different traffic patterns from what she's used to in America nearly gets her run over.
After Pollux has met her, the five of them get together, they rarely all gather since it's a lot of power in one place and could get noticed. They need to decide what to do about Leo and her quest to find the rest of the shards. Pollux doesn't like the outcome of that meeting and makes it his mission to protect Leo.
There are two sites Leo is researching as possible places for other pieces. One is the Lighthouse at Alexandria and the other is here in England. She accidentally finds out the site she wants while at the Ashmolean. They have an artifact of the head of Achilles. In fact it's on the train there that she runs into Achilles as he's trying to get rid of her.
Pollux and Orestes are also on the train and with Achilles convince Leo to meet with their other two friends before continuing on her journey.
Their conversation is the beginning of a turning point in this story and their relationship.
They convince Leo to stay with them and things start getting more interesting as myth becomes a bit of reality.
So many twists, turn and OMG surprises in this book that I'm truly rooting for that happily ever after.
I really can't wait for the next book in this series!
4+++ stars! Would've been a 5 star except for this, no way in hell are 5 basically immortal men no matter how much issues they have would live hundreds of thousands of years and not be wealthy! Its totally unbelievable! Can't afford to feed them all? Seriously? Go did up some of the hidden treasures of Troy dude you're a prince, not a pauper! Renting a flat? Bro he should have owned the whole block! These aren't ignorant peasants for goodness sake! Now rant is over and I can start with the positive. I am Greek and absolutely love everything Greek mythology and history with a passion so this book was definitely my jam. Pollux, Orestes, Achilles, Hector and Paris? Swoon! Leo with her insecurities is believable and I am loving her feistiness with the guys. God's are supposedly bad so after being subject to their cruelty these males combine their powers to banish or bind them away. The vessel they used breaks into pieces scattered across the world. Fast forward two hundred thousand years and Leo discovered a piece. The guys were going to kill her but none of them could, each drawn to her. But if the vessel is put back together the gods will be released and in search of vengeance ending the world! The world building was fantastic (except the lack of money! I can't get over that malaka move) I loved the good versus evil. The angst, the suffering from guilt that has gone on more then long enough. I want them to live, I want Hector to have another child, he sooo deserves that! Paris too! Honestly one for each! Yeah I said it!
4.2 at best,, mas madami akong pros dito than cons and obvious naman sa annotations ko throughout the book pero one thing i loved is the FMC and her character na even though shes not badass and she has REALISTIC FLAWS shes emotionally strong and really confident in her passion and setting boundaries sa guys like ugh go girl,, also I LOVE THE WRITING super beautiful writing ang consistent although medj naoff ako na naging infodumping sa gitna yung narration ng mga guys hindi masyadong nagshow than tell,,, and uhm YUNG ROMANCE!! THIS WAS A REALLY SWEET RH and less spice and I LOVE IT tho what i did not love was how nagdevelop yung feelings nung ibang mc like hector at paris like SUPER RUSHED yung kay hector sa ending,, one moment stuck siya sa past and then the next moment hes kissing leo like wtf also with paris,, like he just kisses her and decides na he wants to be with her eh wala pa silang masyadong interactions????? how tf pero with pollux, orestes, and achilles THEYRE RS DEVELOPMENT WAS DONE SO WELL ANG CUTE NILA HUHUHUHUHU also i love the plot even though ang slow ng pacing,, I RLLY LOVE THE IDEA nila achilles being reborn and sht and leo being medusa and idk if this is just bc first book pa lang pero may mga plotholes and sht like how did the guys managed to survive the decades passing like ?? or how leo just neglects her work like that lmao idk pero may mga missing details pa and all pero so far this has been my best read for the month of may ♡ sana di mafail ang next book

WOW! This was such a creative, unique and utterly intriguing story from start to finish. I was instantly captivated and refused to put it down. The outstanding imagery, phenomenal world building and the creative use of Greek Mythology was all uniquely woven into a story that had me gripping my kindle tightly, gasping at each and every shocking turn of event, and blown away by how it all played out in the end. And that ending – AMAZING!
I absolutely loved Leo. She’s super smart, independent, feisty and can hold her own against those that want to bring her down. She has this instant connection with five grumpy men who just appear into her life. The chemistry between them is there, you can feel it, but is slow to rise to the surface. And I for one, loved that about the story. I can’t wait to see how they all come to terms with how things were left at the end. It’s going to be even more explosive.
This was a brilliantly written story that combined paranormal, mythical and magical elements into one hell of a gripping story. It’s filled with mystery, secrets, violence, pain, passion and love. I was riveted to my seat, biting my nails with the intensity of all the suspense and shocked at what transpired in the end.
LOVED IT and I can’t wait for the next book in this new amazing series!
DNF - quit at 20% This moved so slowly, I quickly got bored. The main characters lack any appeal. Add in that the FMC is only book smart and has no other draw (both physically or emotionally) to see this going anywhere. Add in that the MMC are just bleh, not anything intriguing for me, let alone see a romantic RH connection be able to form with the FMC. Add in that they for the most part seem to dislike each other. It was also a bit confusing on the guys, as I wasn’t familiar with their actual backgrounds, other than 3 of them from the movie “Troy”, to place even who most were (not even connecting most of them to being sons of Greek Gods for the purpose of this story), to be able to connect the dots to this story. So this being a re-interpretation of events happening after Homer’s Iliad, just fell flat for me. Add that I’m not a history buff who appreciates all that is the Greek pantheon & only watched the movie “Troy” because my daughter made me when it was released to DVD. I personally think she only wanted to watch because of Brad Pitt, Eric Banna, & Orlando Bloom being in it, because she was just out of high school at that time! LOL
At my age (60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
5/5 stars: This book literally had everything you could want. If you are familiar with the classics like Homer’s Illid, it will absolutely help you understand the background and basics of the characters. Especially the 5 main men in the novel.
The main character, Leonora is a newly appointed American Professor teaching at Oxford University. She has been obsessed with Hellenistic antiquity since she was a child and had dreams of becoming an archaeologist/professor since she was 8 years old. Over the summer she went on an expedition to Turkey, and found a shard that holds a lot of prestige amongst the academic community. She was recognized for her hard work and because of that, she was offered a position to teach at Oxford.
On her first day of class, a student comes in, a man who is tall and strikingly handsome, inquiries about the shard. Leo fines him suspicious and seeks to do more research about the shard. She ends up traveling into the Marshy areas of England before getting ejected from the train by another man. (I don’t want to spoil too much.)
There are a ton of Ancient Greek mythology references in here, as well as people, and mythological beings. It’s a fantastic book. Definitely has sexual tension throughout and 1🌶️ scene. Highly recommend!
I've been in a book slump until this book. I go in expecting the worst but my gods; I am glad I was so wrong. As a huge nerd for the mythology, I adore this book. The author has a gift of absorbing you in this world and I end up thinking, 'What is going to happen?' That is all good books should do.
Unfortunately, reading the Why Choose genre, you see similarities in all the books and I always figure out characters and where it is going to end. I read for the storytelling and plot. This book surprised me with the characters and the story. And I adore it. Plus, I appreciate all the history and archeological and even academic talk.
Our MCs are tragic heroes of the Trojan War. I never so much focused on them before. But this book led me to read it and search again. That is also a bonus point for this book from me.
Even though it is a duet, it didn't feel rushed. I had a good feeling about who our MFC was, but I was wrong. That made me very happy.
I am going to be completely honest. After being disappointed by so many books, this book was a gift. I am now a fan of this author.
It’s a nice slow burn! This is a good quality reverse harem that is kinda rare nowadays. I almost didn’t read it due to a review, but I’m glad I listened to my intuition! I’ve been a little desperate for a good RH. 😩
I like the writing style, although some complain saying it’s an info dump, if you’re really interested in the idea of gods, mythology and storytelling you’ll enjoy this a lot. THERES PLOT, SURPRISE SURPRISE! Our FL is a professor who specializes in finding artifacts to uncover the truth that tells story. The MLs happen to be gods of the story she uncovers! SO expect that!
The men is easily recognizable, at least for me ,so no complaints coming from there. I read low quality RHs that had unbearable info dumping, dumb FLs, and a cluster of MLs who act the same, trust me when I say this is far from it!
Just give it a try, it’s a slow burn too. At least read up to a part when she meets the first ML. If you’re more of an instalove, instalust, fast paced person, then this probably ain’t for you 🫤
THIS BOOK HAD EVERYTHING. Trojan heroes? Check. Accurate representation of the pitfalls of academia? Check. A smart, level-headed FMC? Check. Well, mostly, but honestly, if I were in Leo's position, I too would've been too hypnotised by the MMCs to care much about, y'know, personal safety.
I also - dare I say it! - kinda enjoyed the severe lack of spice. Like, there were some make-out scenes and the like, and I don't think I EVER want to see the words "Achilles' d*ck" used in a sentence again (there's something so weird about that, idk) but aside from the one 1-on-1 smutty scene, it was kinda tame. And I LIKED it. Because it meant we got to a) focus on the plot (!) and b) focus on character development.
Honestly, it didn't even need the 'twist'. I could read like 40 books of Leo and the Dudes hunting down pieces of the vessel, eating in roadside diners, travelling the world, roadtrippin' - the whole shebang. I just want to hang out in this universe, but alas, it's only a duology.
Do you ever read a book and find yourself missing the characters and the story? Leo genuinely intrigued me. The brainiac with a doctorate and tenure at the age of 25 is a huge accomplishment. But with the fame comes the backlash. Leo is back in Britain to teach a class after a monumental discovery for Greek mythology. Not everything should be discovered though, and when word gets out about what she found there are 5 men who can’t let her journey and search for more continue. Each man’s story is sadder than the previous. Each with a unique background and even bigger secrets than Leo’s. There’s something about Leo that gives the men pause and that is the cliffhanger for the ages. I swear I read any book Ripley Proserpina writes because she has me that immersed and begging for more. I found this to be the perfect spin on a book about the gods.
+FMC that is 25 and curvy + Accuracy of Greek mythology + Why Choose/RH + Smoldering MMCs + Interesting plot
- slow burn - not a lot of spice
This is not going to be a book everyone enjoys or appreciates. It's obvious by some reviews that folks skimmed over words and didn't pick up on jokes (like the person ranting about them having no money 🤣). BUT as someone who knows way too much about Greek mythology, this was wonderful. I was giggling at the mythology filled jokes, one of which made me cackle for hours after. I was so relieved to have a FMC that ISN'T freshly 18 for a dang change and flawlessly perfect in appearance or personality. I typically am not a big fan of slow burns, but I couldn't put it down! Some tropes were definitely present, but the plot felt way more unique compared to other books in this genre I've read.
I absolutely loved this book! This is the RH I’ve waited years to read. I love the genre but usually RH novels focus more on the sex than the story. If you’ve got 5 fated mates you’re going to be busy; I get it. This book though was just rich with story. The plot was fascinating and will appeal to those that enjoy reading about intellectual pursuits. All the characters had emotional backstories that I couldn’t get enough of. The twist at the end was well hidden until the buildup was needed. While the MC was torn between her ideas of monogamy and polygamy, the reader isn’t stuck in a vicious loop of self-recrimination played against uncontrollable lust. The author really nailed this one. I can’t wait for the next novel!
I don't think I've ever found a book to truly fall in love with more then this one. These characters stole my heart right from chapter 1. Pollux, Hector, Paris, Achilles, Orestes, & Leo have stolen my heart and watching their journey begin and grow like it has, had truly be amazing and leaves me begging for book 2. I loved the take on this whole thing the gods and their mind games, the back story behind the Trojan war. Why the guys are the way they are and what Leo's role in everything is truly astounds me and I just can't wait for book 2 to come out and I definitely look forward to adding this series to my shelf.
I don’t think I’ve read anything quite this detailed when it comes to a retelling, and the writing is so good that it keeps your attention too.
Definitely a slow burn but gradually picks up near the end so I’m thinking we’ll get a bit more in the next book.
Poor Leo. Her entire world was turned upside down in a matter of minutes. Also, I think Dr. St. John might have escaped the seal. 🧐 He’s far too interested in Leo to not be suspicious, especially when he didn’t show up for the meeting like he claimed to be attending.
