Surprised by Love #4

An Amish Marriage of Convenience

Rate this book
In Rachel J. Good’s sweetly romantic inspirational series, a bustling Green Valley Farmer’s Market in Pennsylvania is the perfect place for residents of nearby Amish communities to find the partner of their dreams—when, and how, they least expect it! Will appeal to fans of Charlotte Hubbard, Amy Lillard, and Jennifer Beckstrand.

When widower Stephen Lapp moves his five children from New York State to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, his only plan is to buy his family’s farm stand, Lapp’s Pastured Pork. That way, his brother can move closer to his fiancée and open his own stand. But on Stephen’s first trip to the market, his brave act of kindness nearly ends in catastrophe—until strong-willed Nettie Hartzler saves him—and makes an impression he can’t forget . . .

A widow with private heartaches of her own, Nettie has no interest in getting involved with any man, though she doesn’t discourage their respective children’s new friendships—despite Stephen’s contentious oldest daughter. But when Nettie runs into serious money worries and Stephen proposes a marriage of convenience, she’s distressed and conflicted. She’s come to know Stephen’s gentle heart and generous soul, and she can’t believe he’ll want her if she reveals the sins of her past. God has His own plans for the faithful, however, and this time they may include a second chance at love . . .

This is a Clean Amish Romance, and this is the fourth book in the Surprised by Love series. I have read and reviewed the other books in this series before picking up this book. I found most of this book to move very slowly, and I found myself not to connect to the two main characters. There were parts of this book I found interesting, but I found most of those parts were in the background. I really liked the ending of this book, and I found I got a whole picture of the main characters at the ending. I wish I got more of that connecting throughout the book, and it did not just come at the end. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Zebra Books) or author (Rachel J. Good) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

I have enjoyed this series that is mostly set around the Green Valley Farmer's Market in Pennsylvania, the Amish families who sell their products there, and some Englisch characters as well. These stories are about the lives of people who love, live, and struggle through life's problems and issues with faith and strength. I was a little thrown off with the story of Nettie and Stephen as I felt we were reliving Nettie's story of a couple of books ago. She is a widow who depends on her unmarried brother-in-law and her in-laws.to take care of her and her four children. But Gideon has his eyes on Fern. Their story was in a previous book, but it is revisited in this one. Nettie is not a likable person but as we learn more about her past, we can see how it has formed her and it has redeemed her. Stephen sold his New York farm and home and moved his five children to live with his engaged brother. At the heart of this farmer's market is an older lady who owns it and is a matchmaker, proudly. Mrs. Vandenberg is a wonderful Christian Englisch woman able to read people and now Nettie and Stephen are in her sights. This is a frustrating story at times with many obstacles to overcome but well worth hanging in with and seeing the story to fulfillment. Wonderful story of love, faith, overcoming fears, and trusting God's leading. Recommended for lovers of Amish fiction and others.
I received a complimentary copy from Kensington Books, Zebra, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are mine only.

A very heart warming Amish story that wrapped me in as I read it. Most of the characters had past experiences in their younger years that continued to control them in their later years. The importance of forgiveness, and that also includes forgiving yourself, seemed to be the theme of the book. I was totally drawn into this wonderful story and I found it to be entertaining, unpredictable and original. There was a few edge of seat reading chapters that had me turning the pages . Tender romance for two lonely people and a promise for a brighter future. This is the second novel by this author that I’ve read and I love her writing style. I can definitely see myself reading more of her books in the future.

The two main characters of this book are Stephen Lapp and Nettie Hartzler. Jolene Lapp could also be considered a main character because she plays an important role in the story. Stephen Lapp is a widower who recently moved his family of five kids to Ephrata Pennsylvania. He wanted to be closer to his brother Ottos Lapp. Stephen is a pig farmer and he and Ottos rent a booth at the Green Valley Farmer’s Market to sell his pork products to the public.

Nettie Hartzler is a widowed mother of four kids. She lives with her brother-in-law Gideon Hartzler and her Mother-in-law. Nettie feels very insecure with her living arrangements and in her past she lived in extreme poverty. She has done many things in her past that she is ashamed of and she has kept many secrets from the Amish church. Lately Gideon has been seeing an Amish woman who works at his fried chicken / bakery stand in the Farmers Market. Nettie worries what will happen to her and her children if Gideon and Fern decide to marry. She will have to move and she fears that her family will face poverty once again.

Stephen Lapp also lives with his fears from his childhood. An accident in his youth has allowed his fears to paralysis him as he grew older. Stephen’s head is turned by Nettie Hartzler after they meet. He is lonely and is drawn to the pretty widow. His daughter Jolene is twelve years old. For years she has been filling her late mothers role in their home. She doesn’t want another woman to take her mother’s place and certainly not that sourpuss Nettie Hartzler. She has lost her mother and she certainly doesn’t want another woman in her kitchen and competing for her father’s attention. She will do whatever it takes to keep the two apart.

I recommend this book to readers of Amish Christian Fiction and Romance Fiction. This is book four of Rachel J. Good’s Surprised by Love series. It can be read as a standalone. This book is scheduled to be released on 8/23/22.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

An Amish Marriage of Convenience by Rachel J. Good is the fourth novel in the Surprised by Love series. Each book in the series can be read on its own, but I recommend reading them in order. I like the author’s writing style. It is casual (easy going) which makes the story a breeze to read. The pacing varied throughout the book. Sometimes I thought it was a little on the slow side, while at other times it moved along at a steady pace. The point-of-view alternates between Nettie, Stephen, and Joline. Nettie and Stephen each had problems from their youth that are plaguing them in their adult lives. Fears and insecurities have a way of holding us back. They both need to learn to let go and trust God. Forgiveness is another theme in the story. I like that the romance progressed slowly. I thought it was amusing how Mrs. Vandenberg used her new project to get the pair together. Mrs. Vandenberg is trusting that God will find a way to overcome the obstacles in the path to the couples happily ever after. I liked the light humor sprinkled throughout the book (I laughed out loud a few times). It was good to return to the Green Valley Farmers Market where we get to catch up with the characters from the first three books. Mrs. Vandenberg has a wonderful new project. It is something that could be used in neighborhoods all over the country. It is certainly a “beacon of hope” for many people. The author also touched on bullying and learning disorders. I like how the various threads all came together for one heartwarming tale. The ending of An Amish Marriage of Convenience is special. I am glad the author included an epilogue. I loved the last line of the book (it was fitting). An Amish Marriage of Convenience is a delightful escape from reality. An Amish Marriage of Convenience is a heartening tale with a demanding market, the cunning Mrs. Vandenberg, school troubles, frightening fears, a sneaky schoolgirl, a caring community, and a forgiving God.

My blurb …
Nettie, a widow with four children, has deeply guarded secrets far different from other Amish women. Fear has gripped her over what her brother might do. Her children WILL NOT go through what she did!

Stephen, a widower with five children, moves to Lancaster County to buy his family’s farm stand. He can be paralyzed with fear in certain circumstances.

Both see themselves as damaged goods. Can a little old lady with a huge plan to improve the lives of teens in the town also make things better for Nettie and Stephen — and their children? She’s known as a matchmaker …

My review …
Fear can be a monster. Fear of failure is the reason people don’t succeed. And fear grips our two main characters, especially Nettie.

Nettie knows little joy in her life because of fear. If her brother smiles at that woman one more time!!! If people *really* knew what she had done after she returned to the community? When she smiles, her face completely changes but only her children and customers at her brother’s food stand will see it. Fear keeps her trust in other people at bay, even other Amish. Nettie loves her children fiercely.

Stephen, on the other hand, is a gentle, kind man. Yes, he has fears that can incapacitate him. He avoids situations that might cause that to happen. His brother also has a pork stand in the same market as Nettie’s brother’s business. Stephen’s children are adapting to their new home with his brother — well, all except Joline his oldest daughter. She has no friends, gets into trouble at school, and misses almost every recess. Then Joline suddenly takes an instant, intense dislike to “Sourpuss”, a nickname she privately had used for Nettie since she didn’t know her name.

Characters …
The fourth book of the Surprised by Love series has a set of rich characters. Some you would never expect in an Amish romance book but fits the plot. Besides Nettie and Stephen, other key characters are:

The Bully. Have you ever been bullied? I have and yes, one really scared me which he enjoyed. This one bullies for amusement by doing it where others can see.
The Thief.
The little old lady with a sharp mind and money, an Englischer, and a huge heart for giving. She owns the market. Her name is Mrs. Vandenberg. And yes, she was my fav.
The children. Stephen’s five, Nettie’s four but the chief character is Joline.
The brothers. Gideon is Nettie’s brother who smiles a lot at Fern. Nettie works with them at Gideon’s food stand in the market. Amos is Stephen’s brother. The two have plans but not many people are aware of them.
The kid with the nose ring, tattoos, “hair” and a heart of gold. He works at the market.

There are almost too many characters, especially in a book you can’t read in one [long] sitting. Used Kindle’s search to remind me who was who when needed.

Plot …
One word — fear. Even Joline’s ill behaviors (yes, she had more than one) were caused by fear. But for an Amish child, she got away with too much, MHOOC (my humble opinion, of course).

Pacing …
A bit slow at times. There is a LOT going on in An Amish Marriage of Convenience and that makes it quite interesting. For me, it dragged with Nettie’s fear about what her brother might do. Rarely was it about her *real* fear which was what could happen to her children if he did. Had her “real” fear been used more often, I would have had a lot more sympathy.

Missing …
An Amish bishop. Deacon. Minister. The police are involved at times in this book. Yet no leaders of the church appear. For *any* reason. There would be questions too about Mrs. Vandenberg’s “project” and Stephen’s and Nettie’s involvement. AND their children also participating.

This missing aspect of an Amish community resulted in the loss of one star–the pacing of another half star. The book is still a good read, especially if you have read the previous three books. This one can standalone. But no involvement by Amish leaders was for this reviewer a big hole.

I received a complimentary e-ARC copy of An Amish Marriage of Convenience via NetGalley from the publisher, Kensington Books, Zebra. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

It is when we know our true worth, that we can receive the love of God and be free to love others.

I have enjoyed this series and if it continues will continue along with it. With that being said, this had a different spin from others in the series. It wasn't because the main protagonist Nettie, a widowed mother was guarded, or that she was at the mercy of her community and husband's family for her and her children's well being, it was the past she was hiding. From her first husband and his family.

Stephen is also a widowed father and new to the community and the market. He left New York for a fresh start for him and his children. He has good business sense but has a few fears that he has not overcome. One being heights. Stephen and Nettie meet while Stephen is on a ladder about to tumble but Nettie saves the day. She is a little disgruntled with Stephen but Mrs. Vanderberg the owner of the market and a well known match maker sees a match between Stephen and Nettie. She helps it along by suggesting that they both volunteer at Youth Center that targets troubled youth.

To Stephen's surprise, Nettie seems very much entuned to the youth except for Stephen's oldest daughter which brings another thread to this romance. During Mrs. Vanderberg's mission to bring these two together, you learn more about their past, fears, and dreams. You also have a perspective of 14 year old daughter that has taken care of her father and siblings for a long time.

Many threads going on and it was enjoyable to go thru. I did have a hard time believing the real Nettie. I liked her but "choice of weapon" is all I am going to say was a little off the charts. All is good and Mrs. Vanderbergs continues to be the matchmaker you grow to love fondly.

A special thank you to Kensington Books and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Stephen moved to Lancaster County with his children to assist his engaged brother-in-law. Finding a new wife was definitely not his plan, but the owner of the Farmer's Market where he is now working, nonagenarian Mrs. Vandenburg, takes the choice out of his hands. He just might soon find himself in a huge blended family.

Nettie proved herself strong-willed, especially in book one in this series. Stephen is a good match for her in more ways than one. Of course, anyone reading this series no doubt has fallen in love with Mrs. Vandenburg, as I have in each and every book, as well as book five, coming out in June, that I have already read. Her wisdom is unrivaled and she blesses the lived of everyone she comes into contact with.

Although the Farmer's Market employs both Amish and English, and with Mrs. Vandenburg working hard to bring together Amish couples, there is a sense of unity and community among most of the folks there. Of course, there is always an unlikeable character, but the challenges the Stephen and Nettie overcome in this book make it a very worthy read.

Many thanks to Zebra and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed this latest installment of Good's series.
You've just gotta love Mrs. V but in reality she's too perfect. No one that I know of helps ppl like that but it is fictional and I could day dream about it.
This story really does make you stop and think. What might that other person be going through. Is their life worse off than you. This story is about Nettie and her fears. About truth coming to light and it most times it generally does.
My heart went out to Nettie once I learned her story. She really is a heroine in my book.
It was Joline that I didn't like. I didn't even like her name because of the song Joline. For some reason the name even rubbed me the wrong way. She sure lived up to it too.
Jealousy is definitely a green eyed monster.
I can attest to that.
Truth always comes out no matter who you are. No one of perfect and that's what I liked about most of the characters in this book. Good did a wonderful job portraying them.
A great story that I really enjoyed and I highly recommend to others. 5 stars for a job well done!

An Amish Marriage of convenience by Rachel J. Good is a wonderful book that I enjoyed very much. I am giving it a five star review. Nettie is a widow with four children and she has a very unique background for an Amish person. She has many secrets that just she does not want to share with others. Stephen is a widower who also has five children and when they meet there are sparks immediately. Nettie does not feel that she is worthy of Stephen’s attention and his daughter Jolene seconds that feeling. Of course as time goes by things change and Jolene comes around to liking Nettie. Steven suggests a marriage of convenience but Nettie wants a loving marriage. My favorite character by far was the older woman, Mrs. Vandenberg, who founded a community center in town. Many times I had a feeling that she was an angel and not who she said she was.

Rachel J. Good always bring an extraordinary story to life with her characters past and present situations. faith, God’s love and forgiveness and the sense of belonging to a community despite the past.

Good created true to life characters even including a young rebellious Amish girl in this wonderful story. Stephen and Nettie had challenges to face as well as their own past. The circumstances of their past played a major role how they viewed life. I appreciate how the story was developed with themes of forgiveness, letting go and realizing past events develop characteristics to assist others as shown throughout this tale.

Amish fans will appreciate this story and reconnecting with characters from the earlier books in this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Keningston Publishing for an ARC of the book. I was not required to write a positive review but have expressed my own thoughts.

Another amazing story by Rachel Good as she takes us back to the Green Valley Farmers Market with an Amish widow and Amish widower and their stories. Two people with their own heartaches strive to trust one and help one another. Will this be a second chance of love for both or more heartache? I found the story engaging and I didn’t want to put it down.

I was given a copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest opinion and review. All words are my own.

Delightful Story

An Amish Marriage of Convenience, which is the fourth book in Rachel J. Good's Surprised by Love series, is a wonderful addition to the series. While it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend you read the entire series. Each story in the series revolves around the Green Valley Farmer's Market. Therefore some characters, such as Mrs. Vanderbilt, appear throughout the series, and you will also have been introduced to Nettie and Stephen prior to their story in book 4. That little detail is the first thing that drew me to this story as I wanted to see what would become of Nettie and Stephen.

While I thoroughly enjoyed Nettie and Stephen's story, I did struggle just a bit with some of the characters. Nettie is the first one I struggled with. I found her very lacking in the kindness department. However, when I came to understand her struggles and concerns for her and her family, she moved to the likable category.

The other character I struggled with was Jolene. I know she'd been through a lot from a young age, but the girl was just not nice. Even when things began to improve, Jolene never quite crossed into the nice category the way I would have liked to see her do. However, that didn't take anything away from Nettie and Stephen's story.

As for Stephen, I liked him immediately. My heart went out to him completely. Even with all he'd been through, he was kind, caring and just an all around great person.

The combination of these characters and overcoming their pasts for a second chance at love made for a very entertaining, engaging and touching story. It was truly a delight to read and I hope you add it to your "to read" pile very soon.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. All comments and opinions are completely my own.

An Amish Marriage of Convenience by Rachel J. Good is book 4 in the Surprised by Love series
You can read this book as a stand alone however I would suggest reading the series in order as many characters are mentioned in each book, plus you will enjoy seeing how a community of friends and sometimes just acquaintances form relationships and at many times love.
I always enjoy Rachel J. Goods books and this one didn’t disappoint. In this book you will read how ones past can have such a profound impact on their life, and in many cases freezing them in place.
Nettie Hartzler has survived more than most have in her young life and from the outside others just see her as a hard nosed sour faced woman.
Stephen Lapp is a young widower with five kids and wants nothing more than to settle into their new community and provide for his family the best way he knows how, but can he overcome his past as well?
This storyline will hold you captive and make you truly understand that no one can run fast enough or lock away past hurts before they surface and are dealt with. It’s only then that one will see the true path for their life.
At times through out this book I found that one of the characters was such a drama Queen then again I began to understand The depth of pain she must be holding onto, it became clear how at a young age her whole life was turned upside down and in turn she processed that with more drama instead of giving it over to God. I hope you take a chance on this book and series I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. Happy Reading

Surprised by Love book 4

I usually really enjoy anything by this author, but this book was a little slow to keep my attention. I really enjoyed being back in the farmers market and continue to love Mrs. Van. Her generosity and love for her community is remarkable. She can be a little bit pushy with her matchmaking stuff, though.

Stephen's daughter was insufferable in the story. I know she was a teen and didn't want to see her dad re-marry but I found that part of the story to drag on for far too long.

Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.

Sweet story about Stephen, a widower, when he moves to a new Amish community, and he meets Nettie, a widow.. They both work at the Marketplace in different booths, but Stephen's oldest daughter, Joline, wants to keep them apart as much as possible, Nettie likes him, but she doesn't believe any man would want to be with her with the kind of past she has. will they be able to overcome these obstacles? Great clean story!

Nettie has lived life on the streets and knows more about life than she should. As the mother of four children and a widow, she is having to work to put food on the table for her children and to help her late husband's brother.

Stephen is a widowed father of five, his oldest being Joline, a recalcitrant preteen who bullies her way around and wonders why she doesn't have friends. She is head-smart, but not necessarily book-smart, partly due to the fact that she's dyslexic. Stephen knows he has his hand full with her and in some things, she just doesn't give a flying flip.

Rachel J Good has put together a "sweet" Amish story that is more than just the sweetness of the characters. The struggles and issues are real world problems. She weaves a story of redemption that goes beyond just the salvation Christ offers to us.

One of the lynchpin characters is an elderly woman who wishes to provide a safe haven/hangout for teens on a troubled path. She enlists Stephen and Nettie to help her develop a training center, recreational center for at risk teens.

This is definitely a five-star book about overcoming fears, finding forgiveness, finding love, and overcoming obstacles. It's got it all!

First of all, thank you to Kensington Books and #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
An Amish woman who knows how to wield a knife? An Amish girl held at knifepoint? Gangs and vandalism? ALL in an AMISH FICTION book? Seems wild, right? But yes, the beginning of this book was just that wild ride...it was explained in a way that made sense, but the explanation came later, so for a while, the book just seemed so out of place, especially for this genre...way too complicated and worldly for a book about the Amish. This book was very uneven for me- I enjoyed it, but it was hard to change my expectations of how I wanted it to be...
I liked that Amish parenting was on display with Joline, who was quite a character! And giving things from her perspective, added another layer to the story. But being a mom of a pre-teen myself, the drama...I get it. Seriously, I do. It's actually pretty spot on, though to people who don't currently parent pre-teens, they might be thinking, "no way would a girl behave like this." How Stephen handled it, could have been expanded upon, with more moments between the two of them. Nettie and Stephen were a good coupling, BUT I would have maybe condensed the book into the first part and then expanded upon the epilogue after the marriage....I would have loved to read more about how they blended their family, to me that would have probably been more on point for this genre of story. Also, more details about their culture and faith, would have added to the story.

Thank you Kensington Books, Zebra, for allowing me to read Rachel J Good’s new book, An Amish Marriage of Convenience that will be released, August 23, 2022.
This is her book 4 in the Surprised by Love series.
Fabulous. Just a wonderful addition to this series. Rachel has a great knack for telling a story.

Stephen Lapp has moved with his children from New York to Lancaster after the death of his wife. The plan was to work with is brother until the brother married and moved closer to his fiancés family. That was the plan until he met the strong willed, Nettie Hartzler.

Stephen nor Nettie are the least bit interested in romance until God and an earthly, matchmaker, Mrs. Vandenberg decided differently. It took awhile and a lost of prayer before Nettie could accept that past experiences can be used to further God’s kingdom here on earth.

Now the question remains, will they be open to a marriage of Convenience?

Don’t miss this 5-star book. I was not required to give a positive review, and all opinions are my own.

Rachel Good gives us another great romantic book in her series about the Green Valley Farmer’s Market in Pennsylvania. Each book has brought us new characters that experience relationships and love with workers in the Market. We also get to revisit some of the favorite characters from previous books.

This book introduces us to Stephen Lapp and his children who has just moved into the area and is working with his brother, Amos in the family meat stand. There he meets Nettie Hartzler, a widow with 4 children, who is working with her brother, Gideon, in his stand.

We see many interactions within this couple and their children which makes for entertaining, and surprising reading, due to some of the subject matter, which you would not normally read in Amish romances. Blackmail, hurts, fear, sadness, recovery, relationships, love, and new lifestyles are all a part of this book.

I received a copy of the book from NetGalley and the publisher, Kensington. The opinions expressed are my own. I would highly recommend this book, particularly if you are looking for something different, yet familiar in the Amish genre.

I wasn't a fan of Nettie from the previous book where she tried to interfere with her brother-in-law Gideon's courting, so it was good to see things from her perspective in this book. She's driven by fear- of the security of her future and providing for her children. I admired that she worked so hard and was such a loving mother, even though she has rough edges for everyone else. Stephen is a bit thick-headed and it takes some effort, as well as aid from local Christian philanthropist Mrs. Vandenberg, for these two wounded souls to come to understand each other. Be sure to read the other books in the series to appreciate the cast of characters and the good they do in the community!

I need to paint the scene: during slow days at work, you and your friends go through the giveaways and laugh at an Amish romance book, because of how ridiculous that concept is. A few weeks later, you and those friends go out for a nice lunch and go over to Books a Million, and you find it: Amish Romance in the wild. One of the books is on sale for four dollars, and cackling, your friends buy it for you to read and let them know exactly how it is.
To be completely fair, this is not the worst thing I have ever read. It's a 1.5 still, because it still is not good, but it is better than I expected. It's competently written for the most part, though the plot is a bunch of small inconveniences that then get cleared up in the next fifty pages or so (did Amos ever get his money back from Russell?). And I have to admit that the characters are frustratingly human. Nettie grappling with her trauma in frustrating ways is very accurate, but nothing tops the depiction of Joline.
Joline is an extremely accurately written twelve year old. Here's the thing, I don't hang around twelve year olds for a reason. Joline is one of the most despicable and petulant characters I have ever had the misfortune to read about and be stuck with. And so much of the story is focused on Joline, she easily gets as much page space as Stephen or Nettie. Her vehemence is so sudden and intense, she is willing to cause harm to others to keep these two separated. Even after Nettie saves her from being killed or assaulted, Nettie refuses to give her a fucking inch. Also the plot point of her having dyslexia is brought up but really goes nowhere. We are just told it as a reasoning for why she is acting out, due to frustration at her inability to read easily.
Lastly, my biggest gripe and full spoilers ahead: this book purports to be about two people realizing a marriage of convenience is more than that. Here is the thing, the book ends with them being married. The idea of marriage isn't even floated until page 290 out of 400, when both characters are already in love but refuse to admit it to themselves or each other. This book is about two people coming together because of an eccentric rich lady who can apparently solve any problem with her money and connections and then realizing they want to be married. Don't have your blurb and title be about a marriage of convenience if there is no actual marriage of convenience.
Highlight line: He did not lock his doors. He left his safety to God.

An Amish Marriage of Convenience by Rachel Good, the fourth novel in her Surprised by Love series, is an inspiring and heartwarming tale of two people who are still affected by events from their childhood. This story is a compassionate romance about two lonely people and a promise for a brighter future. The importance of forgiveness, including forgiving yourself, is a theme that appears throughout this book.

Nettie Hartzler is a widowed mother of four kids, living with her brother-in-law Gideon Hartzler and her Mother-in-law. Nettie feels very insecure with her living arrangements as in the past she lived in extreme poverty. She has done many things in her past that she is ashamed of and has kept many secrets from the Amish church. Lately Gideon has been seeing an Amish woman who works at his fried chicken/bakery stand in the Farmers Market. Nettie worries what will happen to her and her children if Gideon and Fern decide to marry. She will have to move and fears that her family will face poverty once again.

Stephen Lapp is also a widowed father and new to the community and the market. He left New York, moving closer to his brother, for a fresh start for his family. He has good business sense along with a couple of childhood fears he has yet to overcome; one being heights. Stephen and Nettie meet while he is on a ladder about to tumble but Nettie saves the day. She is a little disgruntled with Stephen but Mrs. Vanderberg, the owner of the market and a well known match maker, foresees a match between Stephen and Nettie. She suggests that they both volunteer at Youth Center that targets troubled youth, as a way to push these two together. To Stephen's surprise, Nettie is quite attuned to the types of trouble these youth deal with. While working together, their past, fears, and dreams are revealed and shared. Stephen suggests a marriage of convenience but Nettie wants a loving marriage. Stephen has his work cut out for himself to convince Nettie that they do belong together.

Ms. Good wrote a wonderfully sweet and moving story that had feelings. The message of love, faith, and forgiveness stood strong; making this a sweet and inspiration read. I highly recommend An Amish Marriage of Convenience to other readers.

Return to Lancaster County and the Amish at the Green Valley Farmer's Market for a story that touches your heart. Rachel Good has woven a wonderful series of stories together in the Surprised by Love books, but they all stand alone as well.

In An Amish Marriage of Convenience, you meet widower Stephen Lapp and his 5 children, recently returned to Lancaster from New York, and Nettie Hartzler, a widow very concerned about supporting her children and keeping them out of the poverty and strife she knew as a child. Both Stephen and Nettie work at the market and they are brought together in an unusual circumstance. Through many twists and turns in the story Stephen is drawn to propose a 'marriage of convenience' to Nettie, which Nettie eventually accepts., despite the efforts of Stephen's oldest daughter.

This is a wonderful story - I couldn't put it down. Stephen has his own issues with losing his wife, returning to Lancaster, living with his brother, taking care of 5 children, and establishing himself at the market. Nettie, at first is not a likable character - very concerned that her brother-in-law. with whom she now lives after the death of her husband, may be interested in another which would make her and her children's future and well-being uncertain. It isn't until you learn Nettie's backstory that you realize what is at the core of this anxiety and fear over stability.

Of course characters from the other books in the series appear, most memorable is Mrs. Vandenburg. Mrs. V must be an angel on earth as she is always looking for the betterment of others and ways to give people a second chance. Through her philanthropy and ability to see through Stephen's and Nettie's pasts and pain, she is able to help bring them together for a most unusual and wonderful purpose -she may just be my favorite character!

This book, as the others in the series, made me want to visit the market and get to know the characters better. I was sad for the story to end and hope that Ms. Good will soon take us back to the Green Valley market and another story of love, faith and transformation. These books are definitely needed in today's world.

An Amish Marriage of Convenience is the fourth book in the Surprised by Love Series by Rachel J. Good. You don’t have to read the other books before this one, but I always recommend reading a series in order. And they're so good, you will want to read them! Book five in the series is coming out in the winter!
This story focuses on Nettie Hartzler, a widow, and sister in law to Gideon Hartzler, from the first book. She meets Stephen Lapp, a widower with five children. His daughter Jolene is very spunky and doesn’t want her father to remarry at all. A wonderful lesson about love and family prevails. The story revolves around the Green Valley Farmer’s Market.
I liked this book, but I didn't like the timing of the story. It started off with a timeline that overlapped the first book. It was a little confusing and I had to go back a few times to reread parts of Book 1. I’m looking forward to the next book. I received a complimentary copy of the book from Kensington Books through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

In any book by author Rachel Good you will learn something new about the Amish community. I won’t give any spoilers but I found this one very interesting.

Well developed characters will pull you into the story. Stephen and Nettie are both misunderstood in their own way and I really wanted to see both of them grow and succeed. Both needed to walk through healing from the past, as did Stephen’s oldest daughter, who made life challenging for many people. Through it all are threads of God’s love and forgiveness, with many lessons we can learn as we read the story.

If you enjoy Amish stories with clean romance and unexpected twists, then I highly recommend An Amish Marriage of Convenience. (Releases August 23, 222)

"An Amish Marriage of Convenience" is book #4 in the Surprised by Love series by Rachel J. Good. This novel is about widower Stephen Lapp and widow Nettie Hartzler They meet at the farmer's market, where they both work, and a friendship begins to grow. Mrs. Vandenberg is up to her matchmaking tricks once again, and makes sure that these two are thrown together in an inner city outreach project she's starting up. Why does Nettie know so much about kids' rough inner city lives, and will she ever be able to let go of her many fears? This is an engaging tale, and it could be read as either a stand-alone or in the series.

The most unusual aspect of this book to me was having a story with both Amish and inner city kids in it.

I was given a free e-copy of this book by Net Galley and Kessington Publishing. All opinions are strictly my own.

This is the fourth novel in the Surprised By Love series. I have read only one other in this series so these can be read as stand alone. However, I feel the need to go back and read the others. This tells the story of Stephen Lapp and Nettie Hartzler. I found this story hard to get into at first. The characters are relatable but were standoffish at first. Each was harboring hurts and secrets from their past. Forgiveness and Love were major themes in this story. One must learn to forgive themselves first but many find that hard. We tend to be our own worst judges. When circumstances push them to an unconventional decision, will they trust God? Rachel Good has a very relaxed writing style that pulls the reader into the story. I look forward to more from this author. I received a copy through Netgalley. A review was not required.

Amish stories centered around the local farmers’ market continue in this latest book by Rachel Good. Widowed Stephen Lapp moves with his five children to join his brother in Lancaster County and help in his food stand. Right away Stephen has a run-in with a widow, Nettie Hartzler. Both have issues from their pasts they must overcome, which casts a shadow on their present and future. Plenty of action and surprises, much unexpected in an Amish story, carries the reader rapidly through this intriguing tale. I was surprised they didn’t seek counsel from their bishop since they would need his permission before taking on the offered roles in the city. And would an Amish woman really desert her nonresistant beliefs to challenge gang members? I enjoyed the novel and read it quickly. I was gifted an ebook from the author. All opinions are my own.
