One hundred eventful years are entertainingly assembled into one manageable package in The 20th An Illustrated History of Our Lives and Times. It is superbly organized; the century is broken into decade by decade chapters, then further divided into year by year sections, each containing six to eight information packed pages per year. The 756 page book contains over 2500 photographs, maps and illustrations.
I don't think that you can have a definitive book on one century. It is impossible. But damn, this book comes close in so many ways. Despite the fact that it does omit or footnotes what we would consider very important stuff, despite the fact that it is being published-I mean they are literally writing a stop press notification to tell us about such events as The Columbine Massacre-this book and it's editors really out-did themselves. I mean events touched in this book that nobody would have gave a shit about in 1999 are suddenly hugely important post-9/11. Revolutions and coups happening in third world countries getting full essays seem ridiculous, post-Arab Spring it makes real sense. A lot of the current players on the world stage make their debut in this book and I think the editors and writers deserve big credit for touching on these things without possibly knowing how the 21st century would be.
