The time has come for Domino and Gus to seize their destiny.
In the midst of life-changing decisions, Domino learns to live with his new clan and his betrothed, never forgetting the life he left behind. But in order to master his true nature, sacrifices must be made.
Hundreds of miles away, tormented by mysterious nightmares, Gus fights for survival in a world unforgiving to his kind. While challenging his own body and beliefs, he meets unexpected but most needed allies.
Once inseparable, now apart, Domino and Gus abandon their innocence while following opposite paths. Meanwhile, in the darkest recesses of the world, their enemies gather their forces to strike.
Through pain and loss, the two friends will discover the true color of their blood.
First known for her illustrations, C.J. Merwild (you can call her Coco) was born and raised in France where she fell in love with writing, fantasy, and characters at a very young age. When she’s not creating stories or drawing, she’s seeking inspiration in video games, books, documentaries… or in her incessant daydreaming.
So I reread this with two of my friends and actually I had a pretty drastic change in opinion that I’ve been sitting on for a little while. Here’s what I struggled with:
Prepare for MAJOR spoilers. Pls look away if you haven’t read book 2!!
• the characters, specifically Domino. In this book Domino writes off Gus as if he doesn’t exists anymore, and despite knowing that Domino is going through his own struggles and experiencing interpersonal changes, realistically anyone in his situation would still reflect back on a person they cared about so intensely (Gus) occasionally if not often. They would FEEL the loss of them being gone and by association we the readers would feel that loss as well. Since we’re in Domino’s head for the majority of this book, that was what I expected to be happening at some point if not throughout the whole book. But unfortunately, I didn’t get that from Domino in this second installment at all. To speak to more his character, Domino is very much a pushover. He doesn’t think for himself, he blindly follows people into the fire just as he did in book 1. I was hoping for him to take a bit more charge of his life at some point in the book and I didn’t get that from him either which caused for more disappointment.
• The romance. In this second installment a MAJOR romantic development happens between Lienn and Domino, in such a way that there seems to be no going back. I didn’t like the way Domino just moved on. But with the author confirming the romance essentially for the whole series, now I’m a little worried for how the romance will play out. Domino and Lienn are not only mated but have a baby together. In no way would I feel comfortable with the two of parting so Domino could be with Gus or them forming some sort of rushed poly relationship. Neither situation leads to a conclusion that I find has been set up well or just would sit right with me. The only other option I can think of is if Lienn dies so Gus and Domino can be together, and that also doesn’t sit right with me either. so honestly I’m at a loss for how I feel moving forward.
I will say however, that Gus carried this book for me on BOTH reads. His storyline was the most fluid and the most impactful, he grew as a character, he opened up the world and furthered the plot, so he was the one good takeaway I had on this reread. There were a few odd moments with him sexually that I found a little discomforting but overall I was the most engaged in his POV.
With all that said, I am really bummed that my opinion changed as I was not expecting that upon reading this again. I loved these characters a lot, I swore by them, I love the author as she’s an amazing person, and I wanted to follow her story until the end, but for a few reasons (mostly mentioned above) I don’t know if I’ll be doing that now. I have also removed my star rating for now as I don’t know exactly where I sit on the scale yet.
9/27/22: Actual Review
This new installment of the Lost Faces series surpassed my expectations point, blank, period.
I didn’t know what to expect to be so honest, but this was not it—and I say that with the biggest smile on my face. I once again was able to relish the character journeys that Coco blessed us with, and I’m so happy because dear god was this such a good follow up to The Nichan Smile.
Following the ending of the first book, we get two boys both dealing with their own issues separated by miles and miles. They face harsh realities and are forced to make choices neither of them are quite ready to make.
Gus discovers his desire to be independent and strong. He is thrust into the path of a man who helps him get there—Ganlaa. With the two of them now a team Gus transforms from a scared and fragile boy into a man willing to throw a punch at strangers for money. He develops a sense of confidence and independence that leads him to meet a young woman named Charr, who helps him discover even more about himself—this was what really sent me into a chaotic spiral. I was shook by the end of this reveal because I didn’t expect it to go so deep. Every time Gus learned something new there was still so much more to explore and I…Coco outdid herself 🥲.
Domino, I wanted to hug. He still had to navigate his choices made in the book prior. Weaving through new dynamics and people he’d come to know—Lienn primarily, who we know is his new partner. I loved how slowly their relationship developed. Coco took her time allowing them to have those intimate yet not exactly romantic moments before giving us the ship. I’m glad Domino considered Gus through all of this (and Vice versa) and that his past was not forgotten as he became more immersed in his present. I also felt for him when a certain traumatic thing took place and he struggled to recover from that. It was handled so well 🥲.
There’s so many points I could touch on in this second installment, but I will sum it up and say that this series continues to impress me in such a unique way; it gives me everything I want and more. I’m so glad Coco allowed me to read it in such a raw stage. I can’t wait to see the finished product!!
Also, I can’t wait to YEET some books from my shelves so I can make room for all of my editions 😩.
5/29/22: I must have cried hard enough because I got it 🥺🥺. And it was everything. RTC later as it’s way too early!
(Not actually a review) I NEED IT 😩😩😩😩😩

12/21/2022 Alright. Flat out - there is a difference between and accusing the author of queerbaiting. Both Gus & Domino are bisexual; they are queer no matter the gender of their partner. The author has never once claimed this story to be a romance. And the author has already stated on Instagram that (MAJOR SPOILER FOR THE ENDGAME PAIRING OF THE SERIES) . It's a long, complicated journey for both characters. A true slowburn. Of course I want to see my ship be together as soon as possible but the author has already addressed 'queerbaiting' concerns and spoiled parts of the story to reassure readers that is not what is happening. Hopefully if anyone reads this, it'll help reassure them too.
04/24/2022 prayer circle that Domino & Gus reunite by the end of this book
I loved everything in this book. I was so over the moon when I got the chance to read an earc early thanks to the brilliant Merwild. This book is everything you could have hoped for and more. It took right away from the ending of The Nichan smile. Gus is on the run, Domino left Ero and swore his loyalty to Lienn and from then everything, and I mean everything, happens. It's a rollercoaster of feelings, actions, adventures, new people to meet and new things to discover from our beloved characters.
Told by two points of view, Domino's and Gus', the reader is able to follow their growths and it was so good getting to know them better, even though separated. Gus alone in the world, threatened by his very existence, running away from and towards dangers, meeting allies and mysterious people. Finally understanding more about himself, opening himself up to others and discoverying what he wants to do. I'm so proud of my child! On the other side, Domino is in another city, with a new clan, partner, fighting to protect himself and his loved ones, new and old and growing up, taking new responsibilities, facing hard choices and losses and so much more.
The world introduced in The Nichan smile expands in places and people, from new Nichans and humans, Blessers and fighters, Gods and believers. The writing style is better and better, making the reader feeling involved and captivated all the time. I could have written thousands of quotes, because I truly loved this writing! The author has such a way with words and it was so incredible following these characters in their growths and relationships. We know and love Domino and Gus in The Nichan smile, we follow them from being children to teenagers and now to men, facing the world with its beauty and ugly, responsabilities and losses, hard choices and fight to survive and get better.
If I loved and love Domino and Gus, it was also such a pleasure getting to know better old characters like Lienn, Vevdel, Calico, Memek and amazing new ones like Charr and Ganlaa. The characterization is truly unbelievable and so good. Characters who are hurt and lost, physically, emotionally, and then get back up, fighting back, discoverying their inner strength and allies and love. Becoming more confident and self-aware, embracing themselves and others. I loved the bonds between characters so much. Even apart, Domino and Gus are always in each other's thoughts, showing how deeply they love one other. It's one of the most precious one, but not the only. I loved the relationship between Domino and Lienn, how they respect, support, rely on, and then love one other as partners, how they open up to each other and fiercely protect themselves and their loved ones. The peculiar relationship between Gus and Ganlaa, complicated by mistrust and feelings and past abuse. Or the one with the mysterious and all knowing Charr, fascinating and dangerous. Each relationship was absolutely perfect and so well written. It was also so good knowing hoe wonderfully complex these characters are and how there could be multiple people in one's heart.
I can't wait to hug my physical copy in November and even though I've just finished reading it, now I can't wait to read the next! I'm so excited!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Marking this as spoilers because I am aware that the author has a very strong stance on spoilers and so I’m playing it safe out of respect.
I loved the first instalment in this series. It was long, but there was plenty enough happening throughout that it kept me reading, and the dynamic between Gus and Domino had me hooked. So I was looking forward to see where Blood of Torbatt would take them and what new things we would learn.
Somehow, Blood of Torbatt got even longer, but…less happened. Or maybe I just expected things to pick up at a new level and feel that way because it didn’t. There was a lot that drove me nuts, and there was an equal amount that I enjoyed, so bear with me because this is probably going to get long, but I want to get the most irritating stuff out of the way first.
Domino’s story was…there was no other word for it, boring. I was bored. He spends the majority of the novel moping about and feeling sorry for himself, in between more interesting flashes of learning how to navigate his Nichan body. There are a few pivotal moments for him, but I genuinely feel like a good half of his story could have been removed, and there would be a much more solid, less dragging story. I recognise that he’s young and has had a huge upheaval in his life, but he didn’t really need 36 chapters to come to grips with it. I don’t really know where his story is going at the end of this novel, but honestly…I don’t think I care much.
Lienn is a bright spot for her resilience, strength and overall sense of leadership. Initially I didn’t trust her as a character, but she grew on me. She’s been through some hardships and has come out stronger, and she provides a guiding force for Domino throughout the novel. I really like her as a character. In saying that, the relationship with Domino went from platonic to sexual in the space of about three chapters, or so it felt like, which in this novel constitutes about eight minutes of in world time. It seems to come out of nowhere, wherein they’re both learning how to be with one another, and the next minute Domino is staring at her body and getting all sorts of funny feelings in his nethers. And then next minute, they’re on the rocks having a great time. It just felt…forced. I didn’t feel their relationship as a couple, which is more maternal to me, because of how much guidance Lienn has to give Domino throughout.
I don’t know whats in store for her and Domino, and I’m not sure I want to know. If the story returns to Gus and Domino as end game (which the author staunchly refuses to disclose since she considers it a spoiler, despite it being a dealbreaker for some readers if they aren’t since they’re so heavily teased), I don’t know how it’s going to happen without doing Lienn a major dirty. And if Domino and Lienn ARE endgame, since Domino seems to be wholly devoted to her, then I think that’s going to piss me off as one of those readers who have been reading this novel FOR Domino and Gus. Unless it’s going to end up being a MMF novel, which I feel like ought to be disclosed because that too is a major dealbreaker for some, and a real drawcard for others.
(For Merwild’s benefit; yes it’s not a romance, yes I recognise it’s not a romance, but endlessly promoting Domino and Gus as the main couple in art and blurbs and other such things on social media leads people to expect a certain level of ‘these two will be together at the end’. And for what its worth, and yes this IS a spoiler, but I’m a little salty about this so anyway: No, Gus and Domino do not meet back up in this novel.)
Gus’s story. A complete and total flip from Domino’s, and why I’ve afforded 3 stars in my rating. We return to Gus as a the scavenging, desperate, starving outcast he’s always been, just moments after he fled from Surhok. His story follows Gus as he learns to navigate the world outside the Nichan clans, about himself and about those who have a vested interest in him. He does a lot of growing up and learns very quickly that no matter how stubborn he is, he will always need someone to help him navigate the world as a Vestige. We learn more about his background and past, and about who he really is, and it was for Gus that I continued reading. His past trauma is addressed with care, and the flashbacks he suffers as a result seem genuine and hit right where it hurts.
He has a frustrating but brilliant relationship with Charr, who has emerged as probably one of my favourite characters in this book. Neither of them pretend to be anything but what they are with each other, and Charr remains a mystery until she doesn’t, and alters the course of Gus’s life forever. In more ways than one. I love her, and I love their dynamic, and I genuinely hope that there is much more of it to come.
Ganlaa is there. That’s all I have to say about him, really.
The book switches POV’s nearly every chapter, which is one thing that drove me absolutely nuts. I don’t mind dual POV, and it would obviously been impossible to cover this novel without it, but c’mon. Every single chapter? It was an endless rebound of cliffhangers and frustration as I’d just get interested in Gus again and then be thrust back into Domino’s boring self pity. I truly hope that Merwild, if you read this review, please be a bit nicer about this next time round. Give us five chapters with one character, at least. Maybe I’d be less annoyed by Domino if I had more time to spend with him at any given point.
The last quarter of the book is where all the good stuff happens. And boy, it IS good. Merwild has such skill with creating tension and reveals and just outwardly blowing you away with revelations that its just SO frustrating that she waits for so long for it to happen? I got hooked once I hit Part 3, and could hardly put it down. Up to that point I was reading out of obligation to this review. I wish, I WISH that this had all happened earlier in the novel, so that I had so much more good stuff to say! The ending is absolutely bananas. The revelations, the tension, the trauma, the changes that everyone goes through. It’s all there, it’s amazing, and even though I didn’t really like Domino at this point, I STILL was rooting for him and for his survival.
There is so MUCH potential. SO many places that this series could go. The world is rich and the powers that be even richer. Merwild has a lot to play with on her hands, and I truly, truly hope that the next instalment in this series continues with the pace set at the last part of Blood of Torbatt, because if she does it will easily boost its way so far up in my esteem that I might even forget about how annoying Domino is.
Overall, Blood of Torbatt is okay. It’s okay. It’s not terrible, it’s not the best I’ve ever read. It’s okay. I’m not going to talk about world building much here because it’s there, it doesn’t really change, but it’s still rich and interesting. The story is progressing (at a snails pace…god, at a geriatric snails pace), and the relationships being woven are interesting. I just really, really want the author to understand that character driven does not mean absence of story. It can be character driven and still be absolutely full of amazing things, like the entire third part of this novel. Let’s do that for book 3, please?
Also, I’m one of those people who probably will be pissed if I read this entire series only for Domino and Gus to be friends. There, I said it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have no idea how to rate this even though I’m thinking 4 stars, so I’m not gonna leave a star review at least right now because there’s so much I loved and a lot I didn’t and some was simply personal preference.
I loved:
Gus. Gus’ POV chapters and his character arc and his storyline All the side characters!!!! Omg wow Lienn was PERFECTION. Ganlaa??? Charr!?? The world building The writing was really good THE ENDING. THE PLOT TWISTS There’s a dog. UNDERGROUND FIGHTING???? hell yeah Did I mention Gus
I didn’t love:
No this is the hard part because as much as I wanted to I did not love domino‘s POV I really struggled because I felt like he didn’t care about Gus anymore. What he felt in book one didn’t transfer over? He felt oddly distanced from his feelings for his best friend and wanna-be partner. It felt like he never really cared that he lost Gus? I never saw the emotional responses of being separated and missing him to suddenly loving Lienn. And I know he obviously does miss Gus but idk it just didn’t hit.
That’s honestly just my take-away. I’m sure others thought Domino was emotionally reactive enough.
Like its predecessor, BLOOD OF TORBATT brilliantly balanced a character driven story and forwarding the plot. If you haven’t checked out this series yet, I would 100% recommend it to readers of adult fantasy. This series has it all: characters, world, romance. But please check the trigger warnings provided by the author before diving in.
Blood of Torbatt picks up exactly where The Nichan Smile left off. Because of the massive size of the cast of characters and world-building, I was afraid I’d have trouble reconnecting with the story, but I was very appreciative of how the author wove little reminders in her storytelling that immediately triggered my memory. It made the reading experience much smoother and enjoyable.
Like most people who have read the first book, I was desperate to have Gus and Domino reunited, but I will be honest: after reading this installment, I’m actually glad they were apart. As much as I love the boys together, I think this separation was necessary for them to grow into the men they’re meant to become. In Blood of Torbatt, Gus and Domino undergo some very interesting journeys filled with heartbreak, joy, and a great deal of self-discovery. Gus was definitely the star of the book, and his arc was my favorite to read both because of the characters he meets along the way and his own personal growth. This doesn’t mean, however, that I didn’t like Domino’s arc. I did find his story to be somewhat slower, but it’s no less satisfying to see him grow into his leadership. I also adore his relationship with Lienn, who is definitely my girl crush of the series!
There are some instances where I thought the pacing was a little too slow for my tastes, but its’ a very personal preference and in no way influences the quality of the story. There are so many epic discoveries and shocking twists, I’m honestly still reeling from the epic proportions of it all! I’m very much looking forward to the next installment of this series.
Thank you to the author for gifting me an e-ARC to review. All opinions are my own.
hmm. so i really liked the nichian smile, and was very excited for this book! and seeing how long it was i was like! yes! more to read!! what a fool i was. th main issue with this book is it is just too damn long. the pov switches basically every chapter between domino and gus - gus' chapters were great. dominos were boring. absolutely boring. by th time anything interesting began happening with him it was 3/4 th way thro the book and i was already kinda over it.
it's a real shame. i feel like this book had a huge amount of potential and it just completely fell flat. MINOR SPOILER i guess but domino and gus to not reunite in this book, and i feel like the book wouldve been so much better for it if they had. though their relationship in this book is...odd.. theyre either not thinking about each other at all or are all they can think about. its very all or nothing. domino for the most part doesnt really give gus a passing thought until suddenly at around 2/3's through he does. but then he gets over it. gus had a similar thing - the next chapter after domino's actually - where he suddenly intensely thought about domino, almost like the author was like look! they still like eachother! promise! i kinda felt like i was stringed along for the entire book, waiting for a reunion that didnt happen.
th only saving grace in this book were the early gus chapters; his initial meeting and life with ganlaa was fun and interesting to read about. i found myself skimming dominos chapters Hard just to get back to gus. but eventually this interest in gus' story faded out as well.
overall. this was boring and too long. i probably wont read the 3rd book.
Reread Sept 2023: Still outstanding. Still captivating. Still keeps you on the edge of your seat. Still so dark and primal. Great world and fantastic characters. I fell in love with Gus especially in this book all over again. Bravo to the author.
Sept 2022: Outstanding second instalment that left me speechless
The first thought that came to my mind as I finished Blood of Torbatt, the second book in the Lost Faces series by C. J. Merwild was: “there is no book like this one out there”.
It’s even more mesmerising than the first book (The Nichan Smile). We continue the story exactly where it ended, with the main characters Gus and Domino continuing their journey, their fascinating world developing further and them meeting some new and very exciting characters!
The second instalment is incredible in many ways: the growth of the main characters was an immense pleasure to read and be a part of. The boys become young men. The growing complexity of their characters shines through all their interactions, especially in the dialogues Gus has with those he interacts with. Gus’ journey and development captivated me the most, we learn so much more about him!
There are some gorgeously written steamy scenes, it was great learning about characters in this way and I loved them because for once, an author is not afraid to be descriptive but is using real words of body parts and about what’s happening in the scene rather than the usual descriptive words and sentences that have been used again and again.
Also, bearing in mind that we are reading a dark fantasy book, there is also plenty of darkness that many of us will understand and take in as part of the darkness that exists in the universe but some may want to visit the author’s website to read about trigger warnings before they start. What is important though - there is so much hope in this book, and so much more light. There is undeniable strength, survival, so much tenacity and resilience. There is love and loyalty and friendships.
And there are of course many “aha” and “I knew it” moments where we get answers raised by questions in the previous book. And still so many moments that catch you completely by surprise and raise new questions. The ending was INCREDIBLE and totally not what I expected - but isn’t that what we want from an amazing book? It’s 600+ pages of pure captivating pleasure and, for one, I cannot wait for the next book.
There is something incredibly honest about how C. J. Merwild writes: it’s raw, it’s unmasked, it’s real and not pretentious. It’s dark and it is light. It’s full of original humour. And irony, for those who see it. And all of that make the books so alluring, they remind me of real life in its most honest form. Because real life isn’t all fairy tales and strawberry ice cream and lovely easy relationships. The real world and life can be hard work, its what you are prepared to make of it. And Blood of Torbatt is just that: it describes the journey of the characters who want to make something of their life, from a life that is not easy. If you are looking for an easy and forgettable read, this is not for you. The world of the book sucks you in to the point where you can’t put it down and it stays with you long after.
And just to add, because I noticed other reviewers mentioning this - I absolutely love the writing style of the author. In particular, the way the language and the sentences are structured. It’s a very authentic writing style and because of that, the story sometimes reads otherworldly. But that’s because this world is not ours! It’s refreshing to read a book that actually genuinely reads like it’s been plucked from a different universe. It helped me visualise and I could see the story developing behind my eyes. It helps that the author is an amazing artist and has drawn many of the characters (find her on social media and website). And one final thing, I loved how the author divides the chapters by alternating between both characters, it makes it an energising read.
Arc provided by the author in exchange for an honest review!
(I can’t believe it took me 2 months to read this, urgh life 😂)
BUT WOW. This book… Easy 5 stars. Merwild has grown so much as an author it’s incredible.
We leave the last book with Gus and Domino having parted ways and begun very different lives on different paths… This book shows you them going through the months and growing and adapting and surviving and becoming their own… the character development was phenomenal. I laughed, I cried, this book REALLY puts you through the emotions but that is what makes a good fantasy! The way the plot develops is incredible too, we learn a lot more about the world and the gods and the history of it all, we’re introduced to some absolutely brilliant new characters (Charr, my beloved) and I flew through the last 30% of the book because… well…. ‘AHHHHHH’ 😂
Thank you Coco for the privilege of getting to read this book early, I’m going to hype this up all month now in time for the release on the 29th! (hehe my birthday)
I can't even express how excited I am for this release !! The Nichan Smile last year saved me from the biggest reading slump ever and it was definitely one of the best reads of 2021. I can't wait to meet my precious boys Domino and Gus again 💖 (* gets ready to suffer *)
Make sure to check out all the trigger and content warnings folks!
Thank you so much C. J. Merwild for giving me an ARC for your amazing book, I’m honored!!!
Can I give this book 6 stars?
Y’all having to wait for this book to publish, are in for a real treat. I’ve been taking my time on this, to slowly devour all the words, sentences and pages … and oh, my, what a ride my dudes! This was one of my biggest anticipated books this year and ofc did my friend C. J. Merwild DELIVER again! I never wanted to put it down.
Blood of Torbatt continues straight from where The Nichan Smile ended. We follow Gus, who is in real big trouble, and well, Domino is too. Poor boys, this book did not start well for either of them, but that was never the intention if I know Merwild right. What is this series without struggles and pain? The character growth and development is HUUUUGE and soooo good for our two boys–or should I say, men, now. Gus is really on his way to find himself and has a very interesting character arc, the growth he goes through, oh my, that boy ain’t no child anymore. Finally being free of nichan clutches and then he suddenly finds himself in the hands of someone else. Just his luck, but he will kick your ass literally with the “help” of some new and interesting characters. Earning fame, money and reputation fighting in circles. Ofc there is a lot more too it, but I won't say more ... 👀
Domino, oh boy, I was in pain for this man through basically the whole book, give him a break! He had to make so many difficult choices on top of what he already had lived through. But thanks to Lienn and Vevdel and his new clan, he finally has a real loving family and home ... 🥺
The story is character driven, something I really like. We get more world building and new places, and we get to know more about those mysterious Blessers. And some very spicy scenes, I like, I like. The writing is overall great. Floats well, and is rich. I did not want to put it down when I started. I love that the chapters were like Domino-Gus-Domino-Gus, it left me wondering and needing to know what would happen next! The last part had me really invested and screaming and crying for my beloved friends. All the reveals had me on chokehold and I was so stressed!
I liked this book better than the first. C. J. Merwild shows that she is a born author and keeps improving her wonderful work! Can’t wait to see what the third will bring!!!
Right off, this book was EPIC. No fluffy intro needed - the fantastic world C.J. Merwild has created beckons the reader to enter at their own will, as the adventures that await will bring them to their knees and on the verge of despair, many times over. Trust me, the price of admission is so worth it.🖤 If you weren't convinced you were in love with the characters in book one THE NICHAN SMILE this book will make or break your heart. 🖤 I love Gus. No stuff that - I adore him. This character dragged himself from the worst kind of downfall, from the deepest pits of despair and dared look up at the world sending out a challenge.🖤 This man will steal your heart away. Every one of his chapters had me hold my breath, he surprised me every single time, until at the very end the author gave me this surreal grand reveal that completely blew my mind. 🖤 The build up, the anticipation, the mystery - C.J.Merwild delivers big time on her pivotal reveal. So much so I am absolutely desperate for more.🖤 Domino...his gentle heart, his kind spirit is dragged through the filth of pain of loss and hardship, over and over and over again, yet he endures and stands tall.🖤 My fascination and regard for him grew exponentially in this new instalment. He truly went above and beyond to fulfil the duty to his people and to honour the feelings he has for Gus. The tenderness he has for him is fantastic and heartbreaking at the same time, and as the reader observes Domino, finally fully grasping his feelings for Gus, his circumstances make it difficult to rejoice. Reaching that knowledge is bitter-sweet, yet I wouldn’t have it any other way.🖤 The world building is absolutely sublime. This book is epic and I am in awe, completely amazed at all the beautiful intricate details the author has weaved into the story, bringing it to life.🖤 The cast of characters was amazing, and I found myself browsing through the numerous illustrations on the author's page @merwildandco as I read to make my experience even more memorable. 🖤 I loved it.🖤
I’m waffling around whether or not I should round up my 2.5 rating or not. This was … really, really hard for me to get through. I just couldn’t get into it, everything dragged, and I just didn’t … care about the main characters like I did in the first book! Gus was super unlikable; Domino was just kinda there for me?
The translation was a lot more difficult to ignore in this book, too. I wonder if it’d be a better read if I read (and understood) French? Random words felt out of place, or weirdly specific, and I couldn’t get over it.
The ending reveal with Gus was fairly interesting, which bumped my rating up half a star, but I don’t really know if I care enough to read future books in the series :/
It’s time to leave a review now that the book is releasing! Anyone who knows me knows that I am obsessed with this series. When I first read The Nichan Smile, I was NOT expecting to be so utterly engrossed in the story. It wasn’t like anything I had ever read before, and Blood of Torbatt is a fantastic follow up to that story. In TNS, I feel like we got to really see the boys growing up, where they came from, what their traumas did to them long time and just really had such an intimate point of view of these two growing up. In Blood of Torbatt, that intimate perspective from book 1 made every event in BoT that much more emotional and heavy hitting. I feel like I KNOW these characters and watching them in pain and trying to figure out how to live such different lives than they ever knew can be really hard at times!
The writing makes you feel so close to every character and it’s just so realistic to see the characters go through such intense emotions. I never know if I’m going to be smiling or sobbing with these two. We also get to see more of the world in Blood of Torbatt and it really shows how closed off the boys were their entire lives. Even after everything they’ve gone through, they honestly are kind of innocent when faced with an entire world they aren’t familiar with.
I also got to meet characters that I’ve been SO excited for (COUGH COUGH CHARR). Even supporting cast characters seem to have so much life and importance to them. I want to know about them almost as much as I want to know about Domino and Gus. I have a feeling this series is going to utterly wreck me in the long run and I’ll be thanking the author for every tear 😂. I HIGHLY recommend this series and hope you give it a chance because you will not be disappointed!
|WARNING| This review is not final as It’s based on my Bêta Read of Blood of Torbatt and once again, thank you to Merwild for allowing me to read it.
If you’ve read The Nichan Smile and still haven’t preordered Blood of Torbatt, what are you waiting for? The end of the world? We are living it now!
I loved The Nichan Smile so for the sequel to be better, It needed a lot. Merwild did it. In Blood of Torbatt, we see the characters grow so much, finding their paths and overcoming some really difficult events.
The worldbuilding also is way more detailed in this second volume and allows us to understand a little bit better what’s going on. The rhythm was just what the story needed, not too slow, not too fast and lord know how much I dislike a story that unravels too quickly. Also, I met Lienn. That’s it. Lienn. Buy it for Lienn.
I’ll post my full review, where I’ll be able to scream, analyze and discuss some parts more intensely once the book will be released, on November 29 2022, but this is a 5/5, a favorite of the year. So you know what you should do right? PREORDER. I recommend Bookdepository over Amazon for your preorder, but keep in mind that Bookdepository is owned by Amazon and that there is no tracking option on Bookdepository.

I finished Blood of Torbatt days ago and I’m still trying to process everything I read. A lot happened, most of it I absolutely loved!
The second installment of The Lost Faces series starts off immediately after the events of The Nichan Smile. Gus and Domino are separated and embark on their individual journeys in the continent of Coroman.
Gus’ POV was everything for me! He starts off this book on the run, trying to put as much distance between him and the Surhok village. As the book progresses and with the help of new friends, a strong, resilient young man emerges. Fighting to be truly free for the first time in his life and learning more about himself along the way.
The secondary characters of were amazing! Some of them we met previously in The Nichan Smile, and then there are new ones that we meet for the first time. A few of my favourites are Ganlaa, Charr, and Lienn. I loved Ganlaa and Charr for Gus. Ganlaa was refreshing as he’s the first human who doesn’t hold any prejudice against Gus for being a Vestige and is willing to take a chance on him. A bit later in Gus’ journey, we meet Charr, a mysterious woman who asks Gus for his blind trust. At first I was skeptical of her, but as the story progressed and more about Charr was revealed the more she grew on me. Then there’s Lienn, a predominant figure in Domino’s journey. She’s strong, powerful and fiercely protective of her people and loved ones. She compliments Domino, being there to help him navigate the changes in his life and allowing him to be himself, instead of what others expected of him.
The hit or miss for me was Domino’s POV. I just didn’t feel as connected to him as I did in the first book and it felt like he decided to start a new life in Visha to quickly after finding out Gus was missing. In my opinion Gus had more of an emotional response being separated from Domino than Domino did for Gus. What I did like was Domino growth without Ero’s expectations looming over him. I loved seeing him try to be strong in his decisions, but still having those soft hearted moments that made him relatable.
Overall Blood of Torbatt was a very enjoyable book to read. The world building, characters, and plot twists had me hooked and I can’t wait to read the next book of this incredible series!
Thank you to the author for an ARC of Blood of Torbatt in exchange for an honest review.
I'M FINALLY FREEEEEE. Oh man, I hated this like I hated little else I read this year. Look at that cover, look at the alternating PoVs, look at the marketing - nothing about that would lead you to believe that the two people this book is about would never meet in it. And, listen, if Domino's story was like Gus', I could've weathered it. Gus regularly thinks about this relationship that matters to him, he compares relationships in his life to this one that helped define him, he takes moments to miss his friend and everything that was wrapped up in him (safety, familiarity, warmth, etc.), he cares. Even in absentia, Gus cares about Domino. Compare that to Domino's perspective? There is one time that he thinks about Gus unprompted in 500+ pages (and by unprompted, I mean someone wearing Gus' exact face didn't show up and make him - and even still......... Domino barely thought about Gus even with Gus' face in his face) and the connective tissue isn't very strong and really only exists not to think about Gus, but to further his relationship with Lienn by telling her about Gus so he never has to be brought up again. *sarcastic thumbs up*
But here's the thing: you told me that Domino was in love with Gus, that that relationship mattered to him and defined him in the same way it did for Gus. I was told over and over again in the first book that this mattered and then in the second book it was made clear that it really fucking didn't, while everything about the book's design still implies that it does?
If Gus ended up wanting to try a relationship with Charronte at the end, I would be on board because it's clear he's grieving the relationship he had and that the meaning of it hasn't winked out conveniently, that even if that relationship isn't continuing at least it's left an indelible mark so, in a way, it still is. Domino's side of that? I feel fucking lied to and I did not appreciate or enjoy it and I just wanted this to end.
I received an ARC of BOT. This rating is an honest rating(may not be a very descriptive one because let’s face it, I can’t write what my mind is trying to say half the time).
I don’t even know where to begin. It just keeps getting better. I couldn’t put the book down. We got more important characters being introduced, more world building, new plot twists with now I believe the overall plot being made concrete. Our boys are coming into their own and new backstories are being introduced. This is still a dark fantasy so there are some TW: torture, rape, gore.
I am excited for what the rest of story will have to offer! I can definitely see myself rereading the Lost Faces series.
Firstly, thank you so much to Coco for the ARC of Blood of Torbatt! 😭 I am so thankful for your kindness and friendship and I feel so honoured that you shared your story with me. ♥️♥️♥️
Blood of Torbatt begins right where The Nichan Smile left off, which I think was a perfect decision and a great starting point. We got to see more of Gus’s struggle and how exactly he reacts to being free for the first time in, essentially, his entire life.
Gus was my favourite in this book. He completely stole the show for me and I love how Coco writes him as unapologetically angry and resentful (because who wouldn’t be after going through what Gus went through?) It makes me feel so vindicated for him. Gus speaks directly to every injustice I’ve ever had to face and I LOVE THAT.
His new friends, Ganlaa and Charr, were phenomenal. I love how much they guided him and how much they added to the story, because after so long, Gus deserves SOME GOOD FREAKING FRIENDS. We got the perfect amount of Ganlaa and Charr, I feel. Ganlaa felt continuous, like a solid friend, and Charr felt like a mystery until the end when we get to know more about her. I love this new trio and I hope they stay friends forever. (Prayer circle that none of them die 😆)
GUS’S STORYLINE. WOW. WOWOWOWOWOW. I’m blessed, grateful, crying, never taking anything for granted ever again. I LOVE. HIS JOURNEY. It was perfect. The slow reveals in his dreams/nightmares made the perfect build up for his eventual mind blowing discovery. Gus is resilient, strong, adaptable. Nichan are, arguably, the strongest species in the entire story, but I think Gus’s mental strength could obliterate them all. Coco writes him perfectly. Ultimately, Gus is a survivor and this is why he speaks to me so much and remains my favourite. I will defend him to the death. 😆
Despite the trauma Gus has gone through, one of my favourite things is seeing his compassion grow. The world has made him so tough, but his moments of softness absolutely killed me. His sympathy for the dog, his worry for Charr, him making peace with Ganlaa, him speaking to the spirit. He is amazing.
THE ROMANCE 😭 I enjoyed very much. Ganlaa’s slow fall for Gus. Charr and Gus’s flirtation and fun. The sweet, growing fondness between Domino and Lienn. Memek and Calico’s sparks. All relationships were completely different and I loved the variety Coco gave us. The unrequited feelings between Gus and Ganlaa stole my heart—because who couldn’t fall for sweet Gus?! 😭 I love that Gus, despite having no feelings for him, still TRIED to have an interest in Ganlaa, but ultimately realised he couldn’t due to the fact that he didn’t want to be bound and co-dependent again, and his lingering feelings for Domino.
Sweet, torn Domino… he had the hardest time. Firstly, I love that we can now consider him disability rep? I was shocked at how quickly he was launched into a different life because of Ero, but his little tripod Nichan absolutely warmed my heart. To see him stumble as he learnt both how to navigate life with one hand and adapt to his true bestial form was so great. I also loved his emotional struggle at losing something so vital. I was proud of him when he tried his best to appear strong and dominant and punish Ero for what he had done even though his heart and soul were constantly questioning him. He is truly too soft for all of it.
My heart broke for him. I wish we had got to see a bit more of a parallel between Domino and Gus—we saw Gus pine and yearn for Domino, but it felt like Domino moved on very, very fast after his initial, tearful shock that Gus was no longer at Surhok. I was sad to see that Domino’s priorities changed so quickly, or maybe that Gus wasn’t a priority for Domino amongst his new clan? I was hoping for more yearning from Domino to match the pull that we felt from Gus, after all—they spent over a decade together and had something extremely special 🥺 Because of this, I felt a emotionally detached from Domino. He is understandably confused and overwhelmed, and I felt this too. I feel like Gus and Lienn deserved a little better from him—Gus, some more pining to honour the special, deep relationship they had, and Lienn, a more present and honest partner who wasn’t holding back.
LIENN. LI. ENN. F*ck, I love her. She is headstrong, sensible, powerful, wonderfully sensitive, vulnerable, graceful. Her backstory broke my heart and I hold her so close to me for her wonderful disability rep. It’s easy to forget Lienn is such a young woman when she is faced with so much responsibility and hardship. I love the way Coco writes female characters—I loved the strong women in book one and it totally transferred over to book two.
Memek remained my favourite female character, but Lienn was creeping up behind her the whole time. Memek’s bloodthirstiness speaks to me in a similar way that Gus does. She is calculated, proud, intelligent, emotional, determined… I love her. She makes no apologies for the way she feels and the words she says. She is complex and appears unremorseful and I adore that we get to see that from her, because not every woman needs to carry guilt or make themselves look small. I feel so vindicated constantly by Memek’s anger at the world, especially the blessers. Her relationship with Calico was perfect to me, and I was so grateful we got to see them in the short story at the end. I’m holding out hope that they’ll survive, but even if only Memek and Gus survive, I’ll be all good. 🤣
Something that concerns me a lot/that I dislike is the pregnancy slash baby. It feels like the most dangerous time to introduce a child which makes me worry so hard for Sylun because the blessers have proven to be nothing but horribly cruel. I’m scared for Lienn recovering from birth (especially with her disability!) I wish she hadn’t had to go through it, she is so young and already has so much to worry about. If it was Coco’s intention to make me even more scared for book 3 then she totally delivered. 😆
Coco’s writing was amazing in The Nichan Smile, so to get to see her writing develop AND improve made me so proud and happy. I love her word choice and descriptions the most, they made me feel most immersed in the story. I also love her dialogue, especially Ganlaa’s. 😆 I will forever be fond of the way he calls Gus ‘mate’ and says he has a pretty face.
I’ll end this review with a TLDR, because I always write such long reviews 🤣
♥️ What made it wonderful for me: GUS. Gus, Gus, Gus. His wonderful growth, his yearning, his struggle. Charr and Ganlaa, their friendship (and maybe more? 👀). The reveals. Lienn, her patience and strength. Memek, her tenacity and her growing relationship with Calico. Lahla, his pureness and wholesomeness. The new disability rep. The strong women. 😍
💔 What didn’t do it for me: my lack of attachment to Domino’s ARC. Gus and Lienn deserving more from Domino (in my opinion). The pregnancy/child aspect (it’s just not for me).

The pacing of the second book definately matched my reading style more. There were more things happening than in the first, which had me intrigued and invested.
Especially Gus's storyline. I don't want to say too much, but I apreciated his growth as a character. I think he's probably stronger than anyone in the story, so I was glad to see his resilience finally 'hit' (ahah, hint!) and see him own himself & who he is.
Domino had lots to deal with, poor dude! Responsibility weighs heavy... but hey, he's got shoulders wide enough to hold anything, right? HEHE. Though I was a little sad to notice just how Gus was missing from some of his thoughts. I get that he's got a lot on his mind, and is exploring himself & love... I just wish he thought more about my lil Gus.
Gus & Domino are what I like in bisexual rep in books/media. I feel like bisexuality is often misunderstod, and when you chose someone who isn't of the same gender as you, then you are perceived as straight and people entirely forget about those you loved before. The evolution of Gus and Domino's relationship with other characters is perfectly natural & doesn't diminish their sexuality. Domino isn't straight because he's marrying Lienn. He's still bi. Gus isn't straight because he sleeps with a girl. He's still bi. I feel like people often tend to forget that. Don't. It's really hurtful when you do. Anyways.
This edition was also gorgeous, btw. I loved the chapter headers.
As with the first book, take heed of the trigger warnings before venturing forth. While dark fantasy certainly isn't for everyone, and the subjects touched upon in this series might be very upsetting, unsettling, or distressing for some readers, the content warnings are there to help guide you in your reading adventure. I mean this in the most sincere way; please don't feel obligated to push through any potential discomfort and upset because you admire the author, enjoy her art, or have been encouraged to do so by friends/reading groups. Your own personal comfort comes first, and nobody is going to have a good time if you feel as though you have to put aside your own triggers to support someone you admire, or read what you friends are reading.
The story is once again told from a dual POV, and the writing is definitely stronger this time, which lends itself to much more cohesive world building and character development. The introduction of several new characters creates a wonderful uplift, and I simply adored getting to know characters that have been teased for months through the author's art. I definitely think that Gus' voice is the stronger of the two, and his character development (and his companions) appealed to me in a way that Domino's did not. That's not to say that I dislike Domino as a character, nor do I hate his arc in this book, but I was simply unable to engage with him in the same way I was able to engage with Gus. I do feel as though some of that was down to how he reacted to certain news, and how quickly he seems to forget/brush off certain developments compared to Gus, but I totally respect that the way one character might compartmentalise and deal with things could potentially be very different to the way that other characters might.
I did feel as though the story dragged in places, and some scenes that felt particularly bogged down or repetitive could have been cleaned up or excluded entirely. I'm not sure if this was once again down to the author writing in one language, then translating the manuscript into another, but there segments that felt a little bit slow, rambling, and bloated. I've definitely been guilty of overwriting myself, so it would be hypocritical to complain about this too much, but it is something that made me feel somewhat detached from the story in places.
Now, to address the "fan" reaction that's been plaguing GR, IG, FB reading groups, and twitter.
There's something inherently gross and unsettling about the sheer number of people complaining that the two bisexual male characters are poor queer rep for showing an interest in multiple genders. Bisexual characters (and people) will remain queer regardless of their relationship status, and to try and reduce someone's bisexuality to "you're no longer in relationship with someone of the same sex, so you're no longer queer" is, frankly, offensive. It's truly baffling that characters who have been described as queer/bi/pan from the very beginning are being critised for being, well, queer/bi/pan. I've seen people try and argue across social media that they're within their right to disregard a character's bisexuality if they enter a relationship with the opposite binary sex, and I've had to click away for the sake of my own mental health. Biphobic rhetoric is no less offensive because you're discussing fictional characters. It's no less problematic to spout the same bigoted drivel under the guise that your ship isn't currently canon, or you aren't interested in reading certain dynamics. You can simply close the book, accept that the story isn't for you, or write a review that isn't centered on rehashing the same spiel that's been used to harm a marginalised community for decades.
The fact that the author was just forced to reveal that Gus and Domino are endgame in the face of queerbaiting accusations makes me feel incredibly sorry for her. Especially when she's been very vocal about *not* wanting to post spoilers for later books in the series. Yes, as readers we are well within our rights to not want to read something if it doesn't interest us, and I'd never suggest forcing yourself to continue with a book/series if it does not appeal to you because life is far too short to unnecessarily waste time on something that does not bring you joy. However, writers are people too, and making horrific queerbaiting accusations and bullying the author into discussing something she has, time and time again, stated makes her incredibly uncomfortable and unhappy revealing is frankly disgusting. Given the very, very dark nature of this series, I would have thought that those consuming the content would have been old enough and mature enough to understand that pushing and violating a real human being's boundaries, while repeating lines that have been habitually used to harm and minimise the experiences of queer people, is unacceptable conduct. As with the trigger warnings, you're free to not to engage should something not interest you or make you uncomfortable in any way, shape, or form. However, feeling as though you're entitled to information someone has repeatedly made very clear that they're uncomfortable sharing, and weaponsing harmful rhetoric to bypass that person's clearly communicated boundaries, is reprehensible.

As Gus and Domino are travelling separately, we finally learn more about the outside world of their village. Despite the world seeming to fall in crumbles I strangely found the outside less dark that we could imagine, I was clearly feeling less claustrophobic without the hand of Ero around Gus neck ! And the new characters offered by C.J Merwild are incredible (hello dear Ganlaa). I’m usually quite distant with women in books so when Charr appeared first around Gus I was quite unimpressed. But she grew on me and I was exactly like our Vestige in front of her : slightly annoyed but strangely attracted. I won’t spoil anything but she’s like a fairy running freely in this strange world. It was a pleasure to see Gus gaining real confidence, getting strength. Even with all his nasty and sissy attitude I’ve got the « must protect » from him (cause he’s just protecting himself since his young age and we all know that so we allow him to snap). On the other side, Domino is still struggling with Ero in the beginning before discovering his true self with a beautiful new character : Lienn. Perhaps it’s because she’s one of C.J Merwild's favourites but she’s a pleasure to read ! She’s strong and fierce but still so soft with her mother... And Domino. Our boys are travelling, growing up. They may be separate, they can’t forget their bond and despite the world seeming to turn darker and darker around them, they don’t give up. The lore’s still expanding around with the religious cultists running freely around. The final chapters with them shook me and even if some events were quite predictable, the story was still a pleasure to discover. The very last pages had me screaming. I want the boys happy and I don’t care if the world has to burn for it. They deserve to be happy and I’ll fight for them. One of the things I love in these books so far - well except for Domino and Gus obviously - is that no characters are flat. They're not « good » of « bad ». They’re not flawless but they deal the best that they could with their trauma and story, navigating in a complex and cruel world full of darkness but still with this light of hope. It’s not the end and I can’t wait to read the next part of their story.
Good job, C.J Merwild ! I can't wait for the next book !
The continuation of The Nichan Smile we didn’t know we needed, but definitely deserved! Or something like that. If you love Domini and Gus as much as I do… just read it.
- I was kindly given an ARC copy from the author in exchange of an honest review-
From the very start, I was hooked on the story, seeing Gus and Domino right where we left off had the same intensity as the end of the first book. I always find reading sequels a bit intimidating as I’m always looking for that same momentum and I can confidently say the author did a great job at giving that urgency back straight away
I really enjoyed how full the world felt as we were learning more about it. The steampunk elements were a nice surprise, you could slowly get an idea of how this world worked and their advancements, specially in the big cities.
Although I enjoyed how big and full the world felt, sometimes i found the exposition a bit convoluted. There were a few elements, specially in the middle of the book, that I struggled to understand! I think this might be due to the size of the book, it feels like it loses momentum in the middle (right in the thick of it) perhaps a few elements could have work a bit better if the story was slightly shorter? Perhaps a bit more editing, specially to a few chapters, could have been beneficial - that said, I know the author is self published and English is their second language so I do want to acknowledge the authors hard work and put emphasis on the fact that what they achieved is not easy. As someone who has English as their second language, I understand how hard this is! so I commend the author for delivering such a rich fantasy book with interesting characters
For the characters, I loved how complex each new character felt, from Charr to Lienn to Ganlaa etc. and I really enjoyed how each one of them had an impact on our protagonists. You can tell how much the author spent time thinking about their goals and how these would incorporate into the main story. For Gus and Domino, I really enjoyed how much character development we see in both of them throughout the book. Things never felt static in terms of their growth so I’m really excited to see where the author takes them
I’m giving this book 3.5 stars out of 5. although a few technical elements didn’t work for me, I still enjoyed this book, I loved learning more lore and seeing characters navigate the very cruel and dangerous world they live in while forming relationships and seeing how those shaped them
First I want to thank coco for the opportunity to read and review honestly Blood of Torbatt. IT WAS SO GOOD. I'm going to start with general things I love about the Lost Faces Serie :
Just like in the first book, most of the characters we meet in these pages are people of color. It might seem like a footnote to some but as a queer woman of color who loves fantasy, never ever have I seen someone like me in this genra. In a time where we can see little black girls being so excited to see a princess looking like them, we can all understand how much representation matters.
I also love how multiple sexual orientations are displayed in the book without it being a big deal... or any deal at all. Again, it's so nice to see positive representation of LGBTQIA+ interactions without the drama. Don't get me wrong... you WILL get drama, but not because of that. Can we also say that this books passes the Bechdel test... multiple times !
I like this very original take on fantasy, with a well built and coherent universe. You can see that Coco makes sure things are always in line with her world but also with each characters. She doesn't ever hesitate to do what is needed even if it breaks your little tender reader's heart. If things needs to be messy : they will be. She doesn't romanticize things that are raw and ugly in real life, they will also be in the book. I like that about her style.
This second installment is not for the faint of heart : remember it's DARK fantasy, but you'll learn so much more about these lovely characters and the plot is so darn good. Honestly it kept me on my toes the entire time. Expect plot twists. Like super good plot twists !
The short story at the end of the book also gives an hindsight on 2 characters that I absolutely adore. It's so lovely.
Tl;dr What you will get : Badass woman of color, excellent plot, amazing sex scenes, angst, a very sexy character close to my heart that I cannot spoil you ( let's call him daddy G).
What you won't get : Mercy for your little tender heart, exclusively a BoyLove's story, bored ( really you won't get bored at all)
