Cosmic Cats & Fantastic Furballs

Rate this book
Curl up with a cat and a book.

A full litter of stories—science fiction, fantasy, and mystery—all cats, every page.

A dying pet gets a new life through cybernetics—but will his humans accept a robocat?

Defrosted kittens run amok.

Chocolate kitties from Mars change from delicious treats to something a little different.

A Siamese detective fingers—or paws—a burglar. An alien furball lands on a cat-hater’s doorstop.

A kitten’s gift to the Christ child gets rejected, but that’s not the end of this cat’s journey.

A sphynx pussyfoots through a wormhole and finds his soulmate on the other side, narrowly escaping death.

A fisherman crosses a tiger kami and is transformed into a legend.

Angels dye a kitten purple and give it wings, but these do not serve it well when it plunges to Earth in the path of a speeding eighteen wheeler.

And, in a Nebula nominee, an extinct cat is revived from ancient fossil material and innocently rampages in a rural Ohio township.

A fun page-turner for fans of felines!

Cats! Mars cats, genetically engineered cats, chocolate cats (for real!), cat blisses and complaints, and a lot about cat-human relationships. The author knows cats well and taps into their imperiousness and adorableness alike. The science makes at least some sense in the SF stories (I'm beginning to wonder if toxoplasmosis is really as strong as in two of these stores regarding cat adoration and a love of sensuality & adornment...) The fantasy holds together well.

I enjoyed most of these stories, though I browsed through a couple--mostly due to descriptions of human cruelty. If you are sensitive to stories of animal abuse, don't read: Pigeon Drop, Purple, or Pride and be careful about reading the first story (although it's one of the best), The Painter and the Sphynx (it's another great one) and Chocolate Kittens from Mars.

One of the more forward-thinking aliens (his name happened to be Coeurl, but don't hold that against him) called together a clowder of cat-scientists and convinced them that humanity needed to be reformed.
Coeurl's sometime-but-not-always mate, Butterpaw, suggested that a smaller version of themselves could be introduced to planet Earth. Call these creations cats.
Under this plan, when a human was tempted to get up and smash an expensive television, whether because of Fox news or CNN, a small cat would settle itself on the human's lap and purr. The warmth would eventually make the human forget about his destructive urges.

description

First two sentences: Earthlings were coming to attack the cats this very afternoon. And where was Benoit?

Vital statistics: Author's home: She lives in Ohio! (shout out to my state)
Year written: 2022
Length: 187 pages
Setting: The future, anywhere from Earth to Mars, to farther reaches of space.
Genre: science fiction short stories with a heavy focus on cats. :)
Read if: You are looking for a short, entertaining read. Bonus points if you love cats.

My two cents: What an eclectic bunch of sci-fi short stories with the common theme of cats as characters! Given 3 stars or a rating of "good."

Interesting cat stories

This was a set of interesting cat stories. Future space vampire cats, extinct cats, normal cats, time traveling cats, this had it all. If you like stories about cats in all sorts of situations, this book may be for you.

I will never truly like anthologies, but if you do like them and enjoy cats, you should like most of these stories. They were written by cat-loving humans. Read them and make your own decision.
