I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review
Well - what can I say other than I absolutely loved this book. Having read other books by K.L. Donn I have come to love her style so I was eagerly awaiting her next read and was not disappointed. So to break it down...
Overall what I loved about this book, other than the awesome plotline, is that you got snips of each characters history throughout the book and you learnt about each one with the other one (i.e. you would hear from Ev about where he love of dance came from when Case did), though obviously some bits were laid out (for example the beginning of the book was dedicated to us understanding Case's back story). It really made you full in love with the characters as they fell in love - pulling you further into the story.
Now to the characters, Ev - she was a breath of fresh air. Often when someone is as erotic dancer, different authors put different spins on it and it can be hard to image that life and how it came to be (unless you lived that life), but this one I loved because I could really imagine how it happened and Ev wasn't a typical person "tough nut/independent" (though she did have those elements). Rubbish start in life, love of dance, being a pole dancer to support her family. Family is the most important thing to her which I can definitely relate to, and she has a super vulnerable side which I am glad comes across before Case is involved for the reader.
Case - he is not what I expected at all. Well, who wouldn't love him. Knowing immediately about his leg, then his downward spiral into drinking was tough to read. I was heartbroken for him that something this awful could happen to him (and I was only like 3 chapters in) and it felt like he had no support. I just wanted to help him so when Dom came knocking, and he went to help with Dee and Jax, it was great to see what I would consider the real Case. When he then met Ev and immediately knew she was his everything, I about melted into my seat. That intensity was really well written and I could really feel it. Ev was one lucky girl. The scene when he is on the roof top with her, OMG - wanted to cry and the romance.
I guess to conclude, the storyline - I loved it. What I enjoyed about this one, and is different from your typical rom-coms, is there is no twist that breaks them up, it is great actually as rather than me thinking "who is going to mess up and how will they get back together before the end of the book", I got to enjoy the supportive nature of a relationship, Case helping Ev though the tough time with her sister, Andy and Marcus; Ev helping Case with his nightmares, Case support Ev in her love of dancing even though he was uncomfortable with his - all of this to me is what a real relationship is, and it was nice that someone wrote this without the need for a huge break-up scene. You could just love the characters and their story.
The only criticism I have about the story is that I would have like it to go on a little bit more; the end "one month on" I would have liked to see maybe how Ev's sister comes along with rehab, how Ev/Case get on with the pregnancy/being parents, what Job does Ev do or does she continue to dance - and what does Case do for a regular job or does he have money saved... perhaps another book??
