An Indomitable Brigade

May 1813

The long months of winter quarters are over, and Lord Wellington leads his army into Spain once more, with a strategy designed to push King Joseph Bonaparte's army back into France. Officers, men and the women who accompany them endure a series of relentless forced marches in bad weather as the columns of Wellington's army converge on the town of Vitoria.

Major-General Paul van Daan is in his element, back on campaign with Anne by his side and his men in good health and high spirits. The new commander for the 115th, Lieutenant-Colonel Philip Norton is a big improvement on Major Vane and Van Daan's brigade is ready to fight.

Lieutenant-Colonel Carl Swanson is enjoying married life and Keren is becoming used to her role as the wife of an officer. Colonel Johnny Wheeler is less settled in his personal life. Torn between loyalty to a former love and his feelings for a woman he met while on furlough in England, he could do without having to deal with a new junior officer who is taking a lax attitude to his duties.

Sergeant Jamie Hammond is worried he’s waited too long to act on his attachment to the young daughter of a fellow NCO. Meanwhile, in the French lines, Captain Damien Cavel takes command of a company of the 30th légère and finds himself facing the prospect of fighting against the husband of the woman whose life he once saved.

Personal dramas and conflicting loyalties are swept aside as the armies of Joseph Bonaparte and Lord Wellington clash on the field of Vitoria. In the slaughter that follows, Paul van Daan's indomitable brigade faces one of its hardest tests so far, while on the bloodstained operating tables of the hospitals and field stations, Anne and the medical staff fight to save the lives of both friend and foe.

An Indomitable Brigade is book 7 of the popular Peninsular War Saga

Lynn Bryant was born and raised in London’s East End. She studied History at University and had dreams of being a writer from a young age. Since this was clearly not something a working class girl made good could aspire to, she had a variety of careers including a librarian, NHS administrator, relationship counsellor and manager of an art gallery before realising that most of these were just as unlikely as being a writer and took the step of publishing her first book.

She now lives in the Isle of Man and is married to a man who understands technology, which saves her a job, and has two teenage children and a labrador. History is still a passion, with a particular enthusiasm for the Napoleonic era and the sixteenth century. When not writing she plays with her dog, reads anything that’s put in front of her and makes periodic and unsuccessful attempts to keep a tidy house.

“An Unwilling Alliance” the first book in the Manxman series was shortlisted for the 2019 Society for Army Historical Research fiction prize.

I just finished rereading the first six books of this series and then plunged into this one. Ms. Bryant has created a group of characters-Paul Van Daan, his wife Ann, and Paul’s subordinates in the British Army during the Peninsular War in the early 1800’s-that have developed deep and rich relationships in the hardships of war. You will fall in love with these characters and shed tears when tragedy happens, as it inevitably does during a war . Ms. Bryant does not shy away from the difficult issues-but she writes with sensitivity and I find that each book has something that brings me to tears. I look forward to each new book in this series. Read them and enjoy!

Too Long, Too Much Fluff

She writes about several love stories happening during the Napoleonic Peninsular Wars and treats the monstrous thing like it's just one big happy trekking and camping trip amongst a group of friends. The honey dripping mush is sickening. Just a lot of fun amongst the boys and girls.
Using officers and enlisted's first names is historically wrong. First names of men were seldom used in those times and military titles were, by regulations, required to be used.
Too soppy by far.

I have been enjoying this series for several years now. Great story line. Good battle description. Interestingly, a few comments about characters not following custom of rigid military formality did not follow the eccentricity of the light rifle as reinforced throughout the seven books. People were more relaxed because the main character, Paul was in a bit of rebellion from the first. Story development was unique. I enjoyed this and have been eager to find the next new volume. Unfortunately, with ,7 of 7 on this last book it is perhaps the end. But good entertainment I recommend.

I didn’t think it could get better

Another wonderful volume of the Peninsular war saga. The ability to weave the brigade into factually correct moments of the advance through Spain is pure genius.
No spoilers so laugh out loud moments and chapters to bring tears to your eyes. Many threads coming together in a truly satisfactory manner and finally a parallel story of two honourable French officers one of whom we have met before.
Well done Lynn, absolutely worth waiting for.

Another great book!

Why oh why could I not have waited to find this amazing author until she has written all the books in the series? I keep on wanting to read the next one and it’s agonising to have to wait for it to be published. I’ll say this book is not a good starting point however, you need to start at the beginning of the series.

An excellent series.

I've read all of the first 7 books in this series and can hardly wait for the next book to come out. Some battle scenes, some love scenes, some death, some birth. Wonderful depiction of the early 1800's Peninsula campaigns. Good research into early 18th century military life and death.

I have read the entire series. Each new entry is as good or better than the previous ones. The development of the characters, the depth of the research, the quality of the stories themselves are immensely satisfying. AN INDOMITABLE BRIGADE is no exception. Fantastic book.

Toil, trouble and relaxation

As usual an engrossing story line. Good plot. Good character development. Looking forward to the next chapter in the ongoing tale of Paul, Anne and Lord Wellington.

Great series

I look forward to reading the continuing saga of the peninsula war and Paul Van Daan and his comrades. The inclusion of Captain Damien Caval and the French side of the story is particularly interesting and I hope to see more of him.

Lynn Bryant and the Peninsular War

These books are well-written and well-researched. The characters are vivid and well-drawn, and the battle scenes are realistic. The books are very enjoyable.
