Devon's used to a life on the run—when she entered the Witness Protection program, she had to give up her friends, her family…even her name. But now someone's cracked her FBI file and sent a hired killer after her, and Devon can't count on the Feds to protect her.
She'd better hide…
Now Devon's fighting to stay one step ahead of the crime lord who's after her, but she can't do it alone. Her neighbor, a security expert, is willing to help her…but is he her guardian angel, or working with the assassins chasing her? Devon has to decide, and soon…
I had enjoyed Sawyer's Lady Killer (2004), and snapped up her latest, Better Off Dead, as soon as I read the blurb that it was set in Hawaii. I found this an exciting, fast-paced read. Lots of exhilarating moments and the dialogue made me turn page after page with anticipation.
I loved that Devon (a.k.a Samantha) had no TSTL moments unlike many romantic suspense heroines and there were no long, tedious struggles over whether she should sleep with Chad or not. Her hesitation was natural and to be expected and I found her romance developing nicely despite the tension of being on a WITSEC program.
That said, I do have a few quibbles - the editing in Sawyer's books leave room for much improvement! The grammar was terrible in some places and there were almost word-for-word repetition of phrases. This is not the first time I've noticed it in Sawyer's books. I've, in the past, come across incorrect names for things she describes - for example, she calls the wrap a "pashima" instead of "pashmina" several times in one of her previous books.
Anothing thing - the ending was so rushed and neatly tied up that it became not only unbelievable but an anti-climax. The way the redhead secret agent's part was written in was also unconvincing. She may be getting her own book but I felt she still ought to have been given more time and attention to make her role in the plot less incredible seeing as she played a major, albeit short, part in the ending.
I'll definitely read the next Sawyer book - I love these action romantic suspense plots and Sawyer is one of my auto-buys. The only title I did not like was the soap opera-ish Every Waking Moment. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed that the editing will improve and that Sawyer will not have to rush the ending after giving us such a great read from the start.
Mystery suspense with death threats when a Witness in Protective custody has to take care of her self with the help of a random neighbor. Samantha is in trouble because she is a very important witness to murder and more in an upcoming trial with a deadly hired killer following her. Samantha is smart and adaptable so she might have succeeded in saving her self, but help makes this story more sexy! Samantha's new alterego is named Devon and yet another name because of hiding her identity. I get confused because she has so many names, but Devon fits for the new life in Honolulu with a new love, Chad. I love the local language which was very authentic because I spend lots of time on Oahu with the locals and it brought that world to me as I read the characters in Chad's life. Brock is a scary villain that never actually meets with the hired killers in his organization. We get both points of view of the innocent strong heroine that is doing everything she can to survive as well as the evil selfish Brock. Both have set backs, dangerous moments and clearly there is a third player in the story which kept the mystery flowing and I devoured the book. Not sure exactly why but I did like reading this. Although too much violence and murder for me! 384 pages and kindle freebie
This is a great romantic suspense book! Packed with tons of action and adventure, this is a book you absolutely can't put down until you've read the last page. I read this in two days and was enraptured. I loved the shifts in narration. I especially enjoyed the parts with Brock being rattled by Jordan (too bad Sawyer isn't writing a book on her). Great characters, great suspense, great mystery, and romance. RECOMMENDED for fans of Cindy Gerard, Shannon McKenna, Lucy Monroe, Cherry Adair, and the like. You don't want to miss out on this. I haven't read a book this good in a while. 5/5 stars.
Very interesting mystery about a woman in the witness protection program whose cover is blown. It is fast-paced and lots of twists as to what she has to do to protect herself.
