This is a good read as Valentine’s Day approaches! Especially if you have a partner and you’re trying to think of something to write in their card.

I think love poems can come across as weird to me because it’s easy to seem phony—like, Shakespeare is just trying to show how good of a writer he is and writing about love gives him a big, easy audience. It’s way harder to write about boring things, or things that haven’t necessarily happened to everyone.

BUT, I think these are good, well-crafted poems from a literary point of view and sometimes it’s nice to indulge your romantic side and try to ignore the phoniness alarm.

If you’re going to read this, though, keep in mind it’s all older poems so they’re sometimes hard to understand. But, there’s a lot of classics that everyone should read.

"But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee"

there were some poems in here that were definitely a little suspicious and probably not healthy depictions of love and possibly bordered on misogyny but the rest of them were really really really good! i <3 classic poetry and annabel lee by edgar allen poe forever has my heart.

A really nice collection of some of the greatest poets in history. I was impressed that so many of the old English poets were included. I had feared it would be a bunch of newer trivial poets not tested with time.

I think this is a good book to introduce you to some of the biggest poetry writers. However not even poem in this book is my style and follows a very traditional approach.
